How to find where all hard drive capacity has gone?
My hard drive has a capacity for 75GB. Whe I click Get Info - it says I have used 52.9 GB but when I Get Info for all the Directories on the hard drive (Applications, Library, System, Users) it shows 25.1 GB has been used. How can I can I find where the oher stealth 21.8GB are? (note: my PowerPC G5 does not have this problem). Thanks

Whatever you do, don't move or remove any hidden files; instead, just look there and do Get Info's as necessary or desired, okay? These are critical files and are hidden to preclude them from being moved, etc. If an errant file is found, there are other ways to remove it if necessary...
With the hidden files/folders option selected in OnyX, do a Get Info on /private/var/vm/ at the root level of your hard drive. This will tell you the size of the virtual memory/swap files, which should be well under 1 GB.
Regarding Backup, have you ever had a backup scheduled without the external drive mounted as the target volume, or perhaps a failed attempt to backup to the external drive? If so, you may have a "false backup" hidden on your startup drive. If you think that this has happened, please advise. This could also occur while using Disk Utility's Restore option, CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper, etc.

looks to me that the two HDs inside your 1TB are setup as a mirrored RAID, so that the actual size is 500GB (whic actual is 488GB).
Together with the drive you should have a CD where you can find some sort maintenance application.
Have a look inside the manual for the Drive at how to change it from a 'mirrored 500GB' to a 1GB Drive.

Terminal - how to find my external hard drive using unix commands
just discovered terminal and using cd and ls commands, which are the only commands i know, i realized that i can't find my external hard drive. i thought it would be listed on my desktop, as it is in the OSX interface, but it isn't there.
not that im skilled enough to use terminal yet, but i thought the first step would be being able to navigate the computer's files.
really curious as to where my external hard drive is and how i can find it using unix commands in terminal.
i was trying to figure it out myself, then i thought surely someone knows this and could tell me in a sec.

I find "disktool -l" more useful in scripts, as it tells you which volume names correspond to which "mount points" under /Volumes. Usually they're the same, but if you have two volumes with the same name, or you try to remount a removable volume before it is fully unmounted, you'll end up with a mount point that consists of the volume name with a numerical suffix.

I normally check my available hard drive space by clicking on the icon hardrive in finder window. However in Lion its not there. where is it? How do i check available space?
Go to Finder Preferences (in the Finder menu) > General tab, make sure the item "Hard Disks" is checkmarked. Once it is, your hard drive's icon should appear on the desktop in the rightmost column.
You can also maintain a quickly viewable summary. In Finder, go to the View menu and select Show Status Bar. That will add a narrow area at the bottom of each Finder window. In that area will be shown the amount of free space remaining on the drive, as well as the number of items in that folder. -

How could i get all the table names from a database(for a schema) which has data 'KST6490' in one of the fileds in the table.There are many tables with this
data. Data type is Varchar2. Thanks.One approach would be to create a procedure which retrieves the name of all tables in the schema using the user_tables view. Then use the user_tab_columns view to get all the column names and types. If the type is varchar2, then dynamically create a sql statement which runs a query on that column using the value which you are looking for. You would need two cursor loops for this approach: one for tables and one for columns. This approach requires good PL/SQL programming skills.
Alternately, many query tools, such as Golden, provide a search capability on query results. Just do a select * from the table and search on the results. This would need to be done table by table and the results would have to fit in the memory available to the tool.
Alternately, you can write table contents to a text file on the a server and then search the text file using operating system tools such as grep. This would require good OS scripting skills. -

You going to need a second harddrive. It is riskie to resize your haddrive with live data on it. You need a backup of the data. That said, you might as well copy your data to the second harddrive. Repartition. Then copy the data back. I bought a 128gig flash drive from walmart for $32.
There were repartition commands introduced in 10.4.6 to repartition the harddrive.
For what it is worth, you can non-destructively partition a harddrive from single user mode in 10.4.6 or greater. Of course, you should have a backup of the harddrive.

How do I find out what my total hard drive capacity is?

I know that I am probably overlooking something obvious, but I hope that you all will bear with me!
I have noticed that when I click on the "waste paper basket", it tells me items are in the trash, and how many GB worth of stuff is in the trash, and how much free space (rounded off to the nearest tenth of a gigabyte, I believe), is still available on my hard drive.
What I can't seem to find out is, what is the theoretical total storage capacity of my hard drive? That is to say, how much space would there be if I didn't have any software or files on my hard drive at all? I know that they probably told me that when I first bought this particular iMac, but I do not remember now.
The reason why I want to know this, is because I want to find out what per centage of my total hard drive capacity is currently being used! There must be a way -- an easy way -- to find that out. Mustn't there?

Since I downloaded Maverick, I cannot find my External Hard Drive in the "Finder" area. I have to unplug all the time the hard drive to be recognized by my iMac. How can I fix this problem? Thank You.
Check Finderr->Preferences->General and ensure that HDs are selected for display. If so and they still don't, Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC, and see if that does the trick.

And I don't know why or how to explain it, but on every device, brand new, you'll never have the "full" amount listed. Take an iPod for example. My 8 GB touch brand new said it had something like 7.1 GB available. My 4 GB flash drive has a capacity of 3.81 GBs.

So doing that math a 250 GB HD should have a capacity somewhere around 232.88, which sounds just on par with what you get (remember the math is a rough estimate)
I checked my hard drive (250 GB) and capacity is listed as 232.57 GBs

I bought my ipod at best buy and paid with cash i put the receit in my wallet but i got stolen at the movie theatre the point is that i don't have a recit anymore and don't know how to replace my ipod now. it apears the apple icon with the back lights off then the icon with a ipod sad face apears telling me to go to apple.com/support.ipod and the back light turns on then everything goes off you can hear it that the driver it's working hard to start but it does not turn it on at all i went to the web site that they show i spent more then 2 days reading and doing what they say but nothing works at all. i just wants to know how do i get my ipod back to normal. i went to best buy they told me i have to came here again but since i already did all of this i could not do it again right.they said it needs a new hard drive what do i have to do to get a new one? how much do i have to pay?. i don't know how to get a new hard drive because i don't have the receip.

1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.

a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)

Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Why can't I find my external hard drive on Airport Extreme?
I have recently moved into a different home and set up the internet through Airport Extreme that works fine. However, I can not find the external hard drive plugged in to the Airport USB which used to show up in Macintosh HD under Devices.
I have unplugged and restarted the Airport, hard drive, and IMac numerous times. I have reset the Airport back to original settings and created a new network. Not sure what to do next.The drive was hooked in the exact same way 2 days ago at my old address and worked perfectly.

How to partition 120 GB hard drive MacBook for OSX+Win (BC+Par.)? Fat/NFTS?
After many happy years with my PowerBook G4 12" (I will miss it definitely, as compact and cute as it is ;-() I'll now switch to a new MacBook 2.16 GHz with 2 GB RAM and a 120 GB hard drive.
I will have to use Windows (not yet sure if XP or Vista), as I need special software not available for the Mac, so my choice will be Parallels, so that I can work in Os X and at the same time use those Windows Apps I need.
However, I also want to be able to boot Windows-only with BootCamp, so I already learned I have to install Windows on its own partition.
So my question is:
How shall I partition the hard drive?
* If I have one big partition for OSX + documents and the rest (maybe 30 or 40 GB) for Windows, I won't be able to access my documents from Windows, right?
* So I would have to keep the data I want to access from within Windows on a PC formatted partition (if I don't want to pay for a software like MacDrive)?
Or can Windows running in Parallels read from a HFS partition?
* Does this mean: if I want to access (read and write) my documents in OSX and Windows, I have to keep them on a Fat32 partition?
-> This could be the partition where Windows is installed (but I'm not sure if I feel comfortable with that solution) of I would need a 3rd partition (Fat32) for data which would cause quite a big "segmentation" of the hard drive.
How did you resolve this problem?
Unfortunately, I don't see that I could really "separate" data I only have to access from Windows and those I only want to access in OS X, so in my opinion for me they all have to be in one place.
