How to findout which carrier my iPhone is locked to...

I recently purchased an iPhone 3GS from a friend (student) who was returning from Australia. Before purchasing I researched on the internet and found that the model MX133 / MX134 available in New Zealand and Australia are unlocked or can be unlocked officially by the carriers.
Now I have received the iPhone (I am in India) and when I try to activate using Vodafone's Chip it says 'Sim not Supported'... Ok... That part I get....
But the problem is that how do I find out which Australian carrier this phone is locked to... So I can find out their terms and conditions to get my phone officially unlocked ?
iTunes is not very helpful in determining the same...

@wjosten - I got the phone from a friend studing in Australia (Melbourne) and he brought it from a retail shop there... (No Sim)
@Ingo2711 - Thanks, but it says activation required and to connect to iTunes.
I don't want to use blacksn0w, if I can get it officially activated / supported.
Can we not find out the carrier from the Model / Serial / IMEI Number or something?
You see, I have the same number for more than 12 years and I don't want to change it. (No number portability in India, yet. And my service provider Loop Mobile does not support iPhone)
So I called for this iPhone from Australia (Since I was sure that those phones were either unlocked or can be officially unlocked)
All I need to do now is contact my friend in Australia and ask him to register for unlocking with that service provider.

  • I would like to know which carrier my iPhone is locked to

    Hello Apple support,
    After many attemps to contact you I landed here, so here is my question.
    I recently bought an iPhone 4 over the internet which was locked and not yet activated.
    Therefor I need to find out which carrier my iPhone is locked to so I can finally start using this thing, I will not provide my IMEI number in public for security reasons.
    So is it possible to check my Carrier lock status by my IMEI / serial number? Because I think it is AT&T yet I am not sure, and I can't check it because I live in Belgium where I cannot get a hold of an AT&T sim card. The owner told me it was a dutch phone so it had to be locked with T-Mobile yet they don't seem to recognize the IMEI. The model number is MC318LL LL is coded for America as I seem to have heard.
    Please do help me because I have made MANY attempts finding this out!
    Many thanks in advance,
    Jan

    This is a user to user help forum only.
    This cannot be determined by users with the info provided, and I'm not sure if Apple would give you this info over the phone if you called AppleCare in the U.S. - for security and privacy reasons.
    You need to get this info from the seller. If the seller is unable to give you this info or the correct info, return it to the seller for payment credit and purchase an iPhone in your country from an official retailer and you will have less problems or no problems including not having to hack the iPhone to unlock it which removes all the built-in security making it insecure as with an Android phone.

  • Please help me know to which carrier my iPhone is locked to! All possible details provided.

    My 16GB Black iPhone Model number: MC318LL; IMEI: 012657005583409 Now I want to know to which CARRIER my iPhone is locked! As per the model number I found my iPhone was purchased in Singapore. Please help me out. Thank you in advance.

    There is no way to tell based on the information you provided.
    According to this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1937
    ALL iPhones (the 4 at least) sold through authorized channels in Singapore are unlocked. If you got it on the gray market, as opposed to from one of the three authorized carriers or directly from Apple, and you're getting an "unsupported SIM" message, then you got taken for a ride.

  • How do i know which carrier my iphone is locked to?

    I bought my iphone 4 off ebay new in box, it is suppose to be for at&t but the box doesnt have any carrier information. an at&t sim card came in the phone but i am still apprihensive of it being locked to at&t. i am trying to unlock it so i just would like to have confermation of a carrier

    That is a lot of good evidence it is ATT. But to be certain, if you can turn it ON, then tap Settings App > General > About. Sometimes carrier information will be given here. If not then in this window of About will be the Model number. Enter this model number into Web Search and see who is the Carrier. if ATT this will be easy, if other, it could be a bit more difficult.

  • How do i change carrier on iphone 3gs locked to t mobile,

    how do i change my carrier on ipone 3gs which is locked to t mobile. the phone is over two years old?

    You will have to ask Sprint if you qualify for unlocking.
    Sprint will only unlock for use with foreign carriers.
    You cannot use it with any other U.S carrier.

  • I have no idea which network/carrier my Iphone is locked to

    I purchased an Iphone 3GS last week on eBay but I have no idea which carrier the phone is locked to. I've tried Orange and Virgin, neither work.
    I've tried contacting the person who sold it to me, but he doesn't know, either, because apparently a friend gave it to him. (I'm going to ask him to ask his friend, but I'm not holding out much hope) He "thinks" that it's o2, so I ordered a sim card from o2, but then again, I'm not entirely sure it'll work.
    Is there any way to find out which carrier your iphone is locked to? I've tried live chat twice, but that's not been helpful.
    I'm stuck on this screen:
    "No SIM card installed
    Insert a valid SIM with no PIN lock
    to activate iphone"
    Thanks a lot.

    There is no way to tell which network an iPhone is locked to except by inserting different SIMs or asking the original buyer.
    Some websites claim to be able to tell you locked status by the iPhone model number, but the information has proved to be incorrect in lots of cases.
    A lot of eBay iPhones are US models, locked to AT&T with no way to unlock them.
    But why buy an iPhone if you didn't know whether it would be any use to you?

    There's nothing stopping you from using the generated sequence for something else, however you can NOT override it when doing an insert (as long as you've specified ALWAYS which is the default).
    SQL> create table t
      2  (some_id number generated as identity
      3  ,name varchar2(30)
      4  );
    Table created.
    SQL> select * from user_sequences;
    SEQUENCE_NAME
    ISEQ$$_91970
    SQL> select ISEQ$$_91970.nextval from dual;
                 NEXTVAL
                       1
    SQL> select ISEQ$$_91970.nextval from dual;
                 NEXTVAL
                       2

  • How to find which model of iPhone 5 I am using? and is that GSM or CDMA?

    How to find which model of iPhone 5 I am using? A1428 or A1429 ? Is there any short code you can dial in and check the model number ?
    And which is GSM or CDMA out of this model.

    If you purchased the phone in the US with an AT&T contract then you have the locked CDMA A1428 version of the iPhone 5.
    At the moment and if the contract is a new contact, then you won't be able to get the phone unlocked at the moment and no, you won't be able to use it in your home country.  You will also have LTE 4G compatibility issues too and your phone will only work on 3G and also you need to remember that iPhones are only covered by country specific warranty, so it is only covered in the US, so if you go home and then have a problem with your phone, you will have to come back to the US to get it repaired.
    You need to approach AT&T about whether they will unlock your phone for you as they are the ONLY ones that can do it, but the answer to your question is no and if you had wanted to use your phone at home, then you should not have purchased it in the US.  The best that you can hope for at the moment is to use it on international/roaming.
    If you purchased your phone in the US, then it will be a CDMA phone.  You don't have a GSM phone, but GSM phones are unlocked anyway and these are the ones that are selling in Canada and the UK.
    If you have your phone on an AT&T contract then ultimately, AT&T are the only ones who can help you with any questions regarding unlocking and they are the only ones who can unlock it for you, noone else.
