How to fix a broken Facebook plugin?

I have a weird problem which has plagued me since LR5 was released. I run two installations, both Windows 7, both 64-bit, one netbook (slow but ok on the road), one desktop (for serious work back home), both currently LR5.4.
The netbook installation publishes to Facebook just fine.
The desktop installation always gives an error "no Facebook album assigned" when publishing a new album.
In spite of this error, the album has been created on Facebook but is empty. If I delete the collection in LR5 (but not on FB) and redo it assigning the created FB album to the collection, I can then publish without errors.
Attempting to use 'Edit' on the collection (to assign the created FB album to it) results in a message about being unable to access something.
There's something a bit familiar about the error message, it's like ones I get when I mess up programming with SQLite (which is what LR uses for its catalog/database).
This weird behaviour occurs when both machines are using the same internet connection, so nothing to do with wifi, router, firewall etc.
It is as if something in the FB plugin on the desktop has got corrupted. A complete reinstall of LR5.3 failed to cure the problem, as did the recent upgrade to 5.4.
What the **** is going on. What file should I copy from the netbook to the desktop to replace a corrupted one?
Or, maybe, the FB part of the catalog (aka database) is corrupted.
Help needed, folks.
TIA
Bob

Just to complete the story. I reverted to the original .agprefs file (which was apparently giving an error before).
Publishing to FB now works as it should with the original preferences file!
Very interesting - thank you for that .

No it doesn't make sense to me but someone wiser about the innards of LR5.4 might understand why.
My .02 about it:
Probably having the reset prefs allowed something to happen which needed to happen (but the old prefs wouldn't allow). Once that had happened the old prefs were adequate..  I have no idea what that "something" would have been in this case, but being a developer who knows the kinds of logic that play sometimes, it's no big surprise .
Anyway, glad you are back in the saddle.. .

  • How I fixed my broken iOS5 update/restore

Like many of you, my update to iOS5 caused me to lose all my content on both iPhone and iPad. I have lots of playlists and lots of app content in folders, and I've been trying various options while re-restoring my devices to get the content back. I've figured out what may be one bug in the process, and I've figured out how to work around it.
The core issue seems to be that the backed-up references to apps, and books, and playlists, and other content is not being resolved to their correct addresses during the restore, which leads to long delays and ultimately nothing being transferred. However, you can trick iTunes into updating these content references, and then many problems seem to go away and you can preserve your old app content, playlists, etc.
    Here's what I did.
Assumption: you had performed a full sync and a full backup with your original system before using the iOS5 updater. Unless the content is in iTunes on your computer, and unless you have a snapshot of devices state saved on the computer, I'm not sure how to salvage a botched restore. Hopefully this backup has not been overwritten...
    1) Take your device and perform a new iOS5 restore on it in iTunes. At the appropriate point, tell the program to Set Up your device from the original iOS4 backup you had made.
    2) In the last part of the restore process it will begin trying to resync your content back onto your device, but you can interupt that by pressing the close box in the status message area of iTunes. That resync is not going to work, or you wouldn't be reading this post. We're going to make that resync work by following the next steps...
    3) Working from right to left across the sync configuration screens in iTunes, you are now going to turn off the single content-type syncing options. So first press the single checkbox to turn off Photo syncing in the Photo tab, then turn off the single checkbox for Sync Books and the single checkbox for Sync Audiobooks in the next tab. Continue for iTunesU, Podcasts, TV, Movies, Music, Ringtones. Note: each of these area maintains pointers to the individual content items or playlists that you like, and when things get fixed we'll simply turn the top checkboxes back on and your particular content will flow back onto the device.
    4) Click on the Apps tab, and look at all of your app screens on the device. You may notice some apps that have white featureless icons. These are the bad apps that will ruin your restore; you must eliminate all the white icons! You have two ways of doing this: 1) if you don't need the app right away, click on the close box on its icon to remove it [don't worry, when everything is working again you can add that app back later from the iTunes configuration screen or by redownloading it to your device], 2) if you really want the app and it's saved state, then you must click on the close box and then find the app in the app list on the left and add it back in. When the app is added back in, it will have its colored icon. [NOTE: it may be possible to restore the color by simply moving the icon to a different location in its folder or window]
    5) Now go to the first Summary tab and press the Apply and/or Sync button to resync the device. This time the sync should work, and you should have your apps back with their saved state (assuming the app developers wrote the app to preserve their state)
    6) After you've got that part working, go back and reanable your other device syncing options (music, tv shows, books, etc). When you reenable these, they will still point at your content or playlists you had chosen previously. Press Apply/Sync again, and you should have all your content back on your device.
I can not vouch that this solution will work for you. I was stuck with two devices that I had to wipe clean to get working at all...and I really wanted my previously-backed-up content, and I've been re-restoring and playng around in order to find something that worked. My iOS5 devices now have all my old iOS4 content, and I'm very happy I don't have to replay Plant vs Zombies from the beginning.
I hope this posting can help someone else complete the migration successfully...

  • How to fix a broken catalog

So the update to LR3 was due and I thought a good time for a bit of house keeping and make changes long due. I have a Win 7 machine, folder used to be C:\Eigene Bilder. In there Raw, JPGs and Catalog files. So moved the RAWs out (I only shoot raw) to C:\RAW and moved the catalog files (LR2 and LR3beta) with it. Changing catalog source did not work. Neither did Import catalog work - well no actually both did work for quite a while but the result in both cases was that none of the photos is displayed - just a grey frame with no content whatsoever. I see that pictures are somehow imported because the number is right, the tags per photo are there and for instance the camera and lens tags are there in each picture.
Appreciate any ideas to fix that catalog again, so that I see the pictures small and large again.
    Best Regards
    Hubert

    In the meantime I have
    gotten calibration gear (Color Plus)
created and set color profiles for all monitors.
On both monitors I see no notable difference between color profile loaded or not.
I can work on one monitor now. The second monitor shows a terribly color distorted picture (not usable at all). This behaviour occurs only with LR. Any other app uses any monitor in any combination perfectly.
I mean on that machine I have used LR 2.x and the LR 3 beta without problem. No fundamental change to the machine, its configuration or operating system has occurred.  Isn't there a way to get back to this default behaviour?
BTW: I had also pinged support who suggested to remove my preference file. That did not change anything.
    Thx for any hints

  • How to fix a broken partition (without wiping everything out)

The power went out today (thanks, Hurricane Irene), and when I rebooted it threw an error message that one of my partitions had failed a disk check.  My installation is split across 3 partitions: /boot (ext2, 100mb, sda2), /home (ext4, 17gb, sda3), and / (ext4, 17 gb, sda4).  If I recall correctly it said sda3 was corrupted.
Anyway, it prompted me to remount as rw and run fsck, which I did.  Fsck found some stuff, then stopped for a reason I can't remember.  I tried rebooting and now it says it can't detect what file system type the kernel is.
So, if I boot from the Arch usb disk, what commands can I run to figure out what's actually messed up and fix it?  While I'm pretty comfortable on the command line, recovering disks is something I don't have experience with, so I don't know what commands to use.  I also have trouble taking the man page for a command and translating that to something that is usable for me.
The power is still out as I write this, so for now I can't provide any additional details or try anything.

2891066 wrote:it prompted me to remount as rw and run fsck, which I did.
    Yikes!  I hope that's a typo.
Run fsck again, on the unmounted partition and hope all comes out well.  You may even run it twice.  And hope some more.
fsck cannot keep track of file system changes if the disk is being written while it's being checked.
man 8 fsck.ext4 wrote:Note that in general it is not safe to run e2fsck on mounted  filesystems.   The only  exception  is if the -n option is specified, and -c, -l, or -L options are not specified.   However, even if it is safe to do so , the  results  printed  by e2fsck are not valid if the filesystem is mounted.   If e2fsck asks whether or not you should check a filesystem which is mounted, the only correct  answer  is ``no''.   Only  experts  who  really  know  what  they are doing should consider answering this question in any other way.

  • How I Fixed a Broken 'AirDrop' Following iOS 8 Upgrade

Prior to upgrading my iPad Mini (retina) and iPhone 5S from iOS 7+ to iOS 8, AirDrop had been working perfectly for transferring files to, from and among my mobile devices.  It was a great disappointment to discover that, after all the anticipation of iOS 8's slick, new features, I was disappointed to find that the AirDrop functionality was no longer working at all.  That is, even though it was enabled on both the sending device and target device, neither device could 'discover' the other, though both are on the same Wi-Fi network.
After fiddling around for a couple hours, trying various 'fixes' suggested by others, I suddenly realized that I hadn't yet tried the remedy usually suggested for situations like this (i.e. an unresponsive (frozen) device or functionality) viz., a reset. Of course, people generally suggest first doing a simple reboot of the device before doing a reset, but I had already tried turning each device off then back on, but to no avail.
Anyway, for those of you reading this who haven't yet attempted this reset procedure, I'll detail exactly what I did to get my iPad Mini and iPhone back to full, AirDrop functionality:
    1.  First, I powered off the device;
    2.  Next, I pressed and held down on the Home Button.
    3.  At the same time, I pressed and held down the Sleep/Wake Button ahd kept pressing down (i.e. on both buttons) for about 10 seconds, until the Apple appeared on the screen, at which point I released both buttons and let the device continue to open.
I'm only saying that It worked for me!  If you haven't thought to try a simple Reset, now would be a good time to give it a shot.
    Best regards,
    Bill

Thanks a ton! This worked when everything else failed.

  • How to fix a broken Zen Mic

OK, first I'll tell you what happened to my Zen. I was playing on 'Random Play All' and it got stuck on a track. None of the buttons worked and I couldn't turn it off or put it on hold.
I checked the forum and it said to put ti in safe mode and all that but I was scared my music would be lost so here's what I did.
. Leave the Zen Micro to run out its battery completely.
    2. Charge up the battery until it is at maximum power.
    3. Voila! Enjoy your fixed mp3 player!
It happened again today so i'm repeating this. As it just so happens, both the times its stuck, it's been on the same CD but different songs, so if it sticks on a song, I suggest deleting the CD.

Why can't you just take the battery out?(instead of waiting for it to run out). I am new to the micro, so please ignore if dumb question

  • How to fix E55 broken by software update?

Hi. I received a new Nokia E55 phone this morning (unlocked).
I charged it full, connected it with Nokia PC Suite, ran the software updater, and now my phone doesn't switch on! It completed successfully and said the phone was updated.
All I get is vibration when I switch it on, and the screen backlight flicks on and off. I phoned Nokia Care, but their definition of 'care' is a little different to mine - all they could suggest was to send it back to the retailer!
Does anyone have any better solutions? Why does the Nokia Software Updater break phones so easily?

Pull out memory card and and battery, wait 5 mins and put the battery back in - not the memory card. Try powering on with and without the charger connected.
I would guess the three finger reset applies to your device too ( actually four finger if you count the power button). - press green call button, * , 3 while powering on. Keep holding in those buttons till you're past the handshake logo screen. This will delete everything on your phonememory, but might be worth doing as a last resort before sending it in.
You should read the " pool of knowledge" post by psychomania too. Specially if you get your phone on - might need a reinstall of the fw.
And the battery is of course not discharged?
