i recent got a ipod touch 3rd generation, i think. and im having trouble restoring it.
when it powers on it will show the apple logo then the cord and itunes logo.
when i plug in the ipod it says that the ipod is in recovery mode and needs to be restored.
when it begins to restore the ipod a error message pops up and says that it cant restore due to an
unknown error. (1) can anyone help me our?

The easiest solution and apparently the only approved solution via Apple (although a pain if you haven't backed up your device) to restore the phone if you can't figure out the passcode. It will erase everything but if you have a fairly recent backup then you will be fine...you may only lose anything that was added after the last backup. You can also try searching the Apple Support pages and forum to see if there is another solution. Ultimately, it's a plus to a certain degree that there is no easy way to change the passcode....if someone "found" it and wanted to try to get in to it....but it's a pain when it's a situation like yours.

I have a problem with my ipod video gen 3(classic) I try over and over again to turn it on, try charging it and it does nothing. It just display a skull. What can it be?

It certainly looks like an iPod Classic, and frankly, I didn't know they could be modified. Well, strictly speaking, it can because it does have an operating system - software that makes it work.
Anyway, while you wait to see if anyone more knowledgeable has an opinion about the skull, have you tried restoring the iPod. That's done by connecting it to your iTunes and using the Restore button that's on the Device/Summary pane. Have a search through the iPod Classic forum for Restore for more information.
By the way, all the links that I looked at concerning the skull (on the top right of this thread) are for the iPod Touch. But, as I said...

Hi, Every time I turn on my Gateway desktop computer I get an error message in the bottom right corner of the monitor: "Binary Download Fail. Please try again." Nothing happens when I click on the box and it doesn't offer any further information

How to fix my Ipod 3rd Generation?

I got a notification that I should download the new IOS 5 software for my ipod. When I did so the download was fine but when I was installing it to my ipod it just didnt work. Now my ipod has a black screen. When I turn it off then on again it tells me to connect to itunes. I do so, itunes tells me I need to restore my ipod, so again I do, it says that itunes is preparing ipod to be restored then I get a error code come up of 1604. I followed every instruction it tells me to do to fix it and after 24 hours of doing the same thing my ipod is still a black screeen. How else can I fix this?

- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Correction: Thank you FoxFifth for the good information. I did find this information earlier before landing here in the support community. I have come to the end and I am uncertain about trying to reset my I-pod touch to the factory settings. I was satisfied with the older version of i-tunes. How to Connect iPod 3rd Gen to Mac Mini

I have two iPod 3rd gen's but can not connect it to my Mac Mini due to the sync cable which connects to firewire. I've tried looking for some type of adaptor that will allow me to connect the 3G sync cable to my mini but am having no luck.
If anyone has a suggestion or can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

OK - just figured out that this is a 2nd generation ipod (20GB). It has a firewire port at the top with a cover over it. I just got off the phone with Apple Tech support and they suggested I try the forums, etc. They didn't know how to connect this ipod to a USB port. Anyone have any ideas?

How do I format my 3rd gen iPod Shuffle to use HFS format?
I tried restoring from iTunes and I did not see any option to format it in HFS. After restore, the iPod is still using FAT32. I used the Disk Utility in 10.6.2 to format it in HFS. But, iTunes told me that I cannot use the iPod and forced me to do a restore, which formatted my iPod back in FAT32.
Is HFS not supported any more? I really do not like to use FAT32.

iPods do not get infected.
Even if it did, plugging an "infected" iPod into a Mac would have no affect on the Mac.
I expected support for HFS+.
Bummer.
Previous generation shuffles did have that support.
All iPod shuffles have only been FAT32 as formatted by iTunes.
You can format them as HFS+ using Disk Utility and use them as a thumb drive but they will not work as an iPod until you Restore them in iTunes (to FAT32).

How I "fixed" my iPod after the latest update screwed everything up

I am not sure if this will help anyone but here is what I have been through and done. I also don't know if this "fix" will last. So far it has been 24 hours and my iPod still works. To be honest I was surprised anything worked since this whole fiasco started. Good Luck!
(Please know I am not telling you to do this, just letting you know what I did and what happened. I have no idea if the slap to the hand actually did any good or if it is all just coincidence.)
After installing the latest iPod updater my iTunes would not recognize my iPod and when connected to the pc the iPod would simple flash do not disconnect. This would not stop no matter what I did. Once I removed the iPod from the pc sometimes it would go to the menu and have music on it and other times it would not have music on it. On some occasions I would get the folder with the exclamation point. I did try to reformat the drive through the pc and/or restore it through the updater but since it kept flashing do not disconnect the updater could not "mount" the iPod and the pc was never able to access the drive. At one point I was able to access the drive and reformat it but it said it could not finish the formatting. After three days of trying to do all of these steps over and over I finally put in a ticket to have it repaired by Apple.
I did reinstall iTunes to its latest update but kept the updater at the version that originally came with the iPod on the Cd.
Which leads me to the final step. I had heard that other folks had slapped the iPod against their hands and suddenly they would work again. So I figured, at this point, what do I have to lose? (Please know I am not telling you to do this, just letting you know what I did and what happened. I have no idea if the slap to the hand actually did any good or if it is all just coincidence.) I plugged the iPod in and watched it flash its message to do not disconnect, I reset it and then forced it to say do not disconnect, then quickly disconnected it. Once removed I slapped the side of the iPod against the palm of my hand. The drive did spin up and the picture which tells you to plug the iPod into the wall appeared, which I did. It showed the apple logo, a status bar ran and then went to the menu and reset itself.
I connected the iPod to the pc with the current iTunes program, old iPod updater version, with my playlists and library intact and it started to update the iPod with my library and playlists. Once finished I manually disconnected the iPod and safely removed the hardware.
So far it works fine. I used it at home and in my car. I have not tried to use the new updater again. Honestly I fear what would happen.
