How to fix a non-working keyboard backlight (2008 Non-Unibody MacBook Pro)

I was having trouble with my 2008 Non-Unibody MacBook Pro's backlit keyboard. In spite of seeing the backlight bar go up and down, it would not light up.
I have solved the problem by replugging the power ribbon that connects to the backlight.
Here is a YouTube video I made that explains the procedure:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuOsBJe8NbU
Hope it helps anybody!
Take care!

Same Problem here.
I have installed bootcamp. i played Crysis for over 5 hours. After that i went on OS X. For 2 hours just surfing the net.I opened handbrake and the macbook RUNS at 89 degrees Celsius. and the fans i could not hear them. maybe they are on 2000rpm. Thank god i realise it soon, and stop handbrake encoding.
After that i came here and read that others have the same problem. so i reset the SMC. after resseting SMC . the 1 time i opened handbrake the fans start rolling at 67 Celsius .I stopped the encoding and start it again after 5 minutes. AGAIN the macbook reach 89 degrees without the fans rolling from over 2000rpm.
Please apple fix it. We don't want our MBPs to be burned Please realise this problem and give us a fix.

  • Are non-Unibody Macbook Pros still viable for professional Photoshop/Lightroom work?

I currently own a late 2008 Macbook pro (the first unibody) model with a 2.4ghz core 2 duo processor, and I am looking for something similar to get my wife who works with as an upgrade to her crappy old laptop that crashes on her when she has more than a few DNGs open in Photoshop. I was wondering if the 2007/8 Non Unibody Higher End Macbook Pros are still viable for Photoshop/Lightroom work? I know that some of these models seem very old now, but she has a 2005 Windows Toshiba Laptop that can barely handle it's own operating system...so would a decently powered non-unibody Macbook Pro still be viable today or would she have just any many headaches when trying to multitask?
    Thanks, it's my first post!

Thank you everybody for all the replies!
First off, I think we'll wait what the 11th of june will bring us, hopefully a new mac mini. As Michael Wasley stated, the glossy imac screen isn't going to work for him. So that brings us to a Mac Mini or Macbook Pro. I'm using the macbook pro myself for the last couple of years and i'm a great fan of it's capabilities.. but my brother prefers a fixed 'computer' and not a laptop..
At this point i think he's going to buy (the new?) mac mini (and use his own screen), upgrade the RAM to somewhere between 12-16 GB, possible get a SSD drive and for sure get the biggest i7 processor available.
Hopefully that will get things running.
    Kind regards,
    Mark

  • How can i get in work my Hp scaner with my macbook pro?

how can i get in use my Hp scaner with my macbook pro?

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode with the MacBook as the main screen. The Menu Bar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the TV but you can move the cursor onto the TV screen.
In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen.
The TV will now have the Dock and Menu Bar and windows will open on it. But you can move the cursor to the MacBook screen and move windows from the TV over to the MacBook screen.
You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box. That will give you the same screen at the same resolution on both the MacBook and the external monitor.

  • How to care for battery in non-unibody macbook pro

I have a non-unibody 15" macbook pro 4,1 running 10.6.8.  i'm not sure the year it was made [is there a manufacture date anywhere on the machine?].
the included battery finally completely died on me 4 days ago and i ran it solely off the ac power until yesterday, when i got paid and bought a new battery.
aside from calibrating the battery [charge to 100% -> discharge to sleep -> recharge to 100%] as the first thing, what can i do to make this battery last me a long time?
the internet seems to suggest that the machine should generally be left plugged in if near a power source- basically, nearly all the time.  is this true?
assuming it is true, how often should i exercise the battery and how much?  i should run it down for what percentage per day or week?
    thanks!

I keep my MBP connected to AC as much as possible.  I do not expect to get the maximum cycles out of it, but I will get it to last as long as possible.  So far I have 4+ years on my 2006 MBP with 33 cycles.
Do 'exercise' it about every 4-6 weeks to about the 40% level

  • Disable fan in non-unibody macbook pro

    Hi
My girlfriend has an old Macbook Pro non-unibody from 2007.
I know there is some automated fan control already in the Macbook.
But it goes on full speed at times where its not really needed.
So I installed smc fan control and it fixed it for the most part, but the "original" fan control takes over when it deems it necessary (and in this case it rarely is).
I would like to rely on the fan speed set in smc fan control and not what the Macbook thinks it should be doing.
So is there a way of disabling the original fan control without disabling the fans. So it's only smc fan control that dictates the fan speed, even if it means it's too warm.
I know it can reduce the life span of the fans and the macbook pro itsself. But at this point it doesn't matter. Macbook Pros from 2007 are fairly cheap and it's annoying for my girlfriend to have the fans on full speed even though it's only running Word and not noticeably hot.
    It's running Mavericks.
    Thanks

Dealing with Apple is all about the warranty. They stand behind everything they do.
For this reason, they don't tend to be intersted in touching anything not provided by Apple.
Your appointment at the genius Bar for an evaluation is free, in warranty or out. If the genius can make you a happy customer for a few minutes work and no parts, he may just do any re-connection you need, but there is no standing policy or standard charge.
There may be third-party laptop repair guys who would be happy to do what you are looking for, for a fee to be negotiated.

  • Problems with keyboard backlight light on my macbook pro retina 2012

Is it a malfunction if it flickers off? Is there some kind of sensor in it sensitive to daylight?

" I've never had this problem on any of my other macbook's."
Well it's been an issue with MacBooks of all flavors and goes all the way back to the iBook G3s. Those were plastic screens so it was worse. I've also seen it on PC laptops.
I'd say thanks for the star but you gave it to yourself .

  • What power adapters work with the 2008 (previous model) macbook pros?

The battery is 60w. I've had to replace 3 powercords because of internal failure or melting in the past year and was wondering what wattage would be appropriate for the cords since I have to now buy a new one.
Also, is there any type of wrapping I could encase the cord in? I tried using electrical tape to seal up a whole in one of my cords and it promply ate through the casing, leaving it in tatters. The cable still works but it's certainly unsafe to leave unwrapped at this point.

You should find that this adapter best fits your model of adapter:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC461LL/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
There is a way of wrapping your cable so there's no chance of it failing again.
When you start wrapping the cable, take the large adapter in your right hand, and leave about two inches of slack. That way, when you start wrapping the cable around the adapter, the cable is flexible and there's no stress. Next, the thinner magnetic part of the cable should be wrapped loosely.
I only request that respond to this thread, on whether or not this answers your question!

  • Are 17" Non-Unibody MacBook Pro display assemblies interchangeable?

    Hi all,
I have a 17" MacBook Pro (A1229) and the steel frame inside the display is bent, so it doesn't open and close reliably. However, I found a 17" display assembly for model A1151 on eBay. Can I use the older display with my newer model?

Good question, but I suspect the model numbers must be consistent.

I have an Ipod classic sync'd to a PC. The PC is no longer working. I purchased a new MacBook pro. How can I sync the Ipod to the new Macbook pro

Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time. It will recognize the iTunes library on the Mac as a new library. If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library. So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your Mac first.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

It depends upon the bend and the exact location.  In all likelihood replacement will be the most efficient method of repair or just ignoring it.

  • My macbook pro runs slow, iTunes videos keep stuttering. Nothing has worked to solve this issue. Macbook Pro 13-inch mid 2012 2.5GHz i5 with 8GB RAM upgrade.

    Hello everyone.
I have been having this issue for a few months now and nothing works to resolve it. The biggest issue is that iTunes videos constantly stutter ever few seconds, the audio portion of the video is not effected. The most I have open at once is Safari, Skype, and iTunes, and possibly Open Office. Videos will even stutter with nothing else open other than iTunes. At times it sounds like the computer is running something in the background from hard drive noise.
I even upgraded the RAM to 8GB and it still has this problem! Nothing looks wrong in Activity Monitor other than occasionally the memory usage spikes up to 6GB, but even then the memory pressure graph is green. I dont understand how these non-intensive programs can use that much. The hard drive is barely 1/3 full.
Please help with a solution as nothing has worked so far. Thanks!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
