You do not have to restore to factory settings/new iPod. Restoring from backup does not restore the screen-lock passcode.
Also the article you provided a link troi does not apply to the iPod touch. The article says:

When I go to turn my iPod on, the Apple logo will come up and I will hear a strange clicking sound coming from inside the iPod.
