How to fix error charging is not supported with this accessory (iphone 3gs)

how to fix error charging is not supported with this accessory (iphone 3gs)?

This can mean there is some dirt, lint, or foreign material in the iPhone's dock connector port and it doesn't take much, or the dock connector port has damage with the pins or there is some moisture damage.

  • IPhone error "Charging is not supported with this accessory"

I keep getting error "Charging is not supported with this accessory" ever since the last update. I only get this message when iphone is locked and not plugged in to anything. When phone is locked the message keeps popping up every few seconds, consiquently I'm having to charge at least twice a day!
Error only occurs when not plugged in & iphone locked & doesn't make any difference if wifi on or off
    Connectors have been cleaned
    iphone has been restored
    iphone has been re-booted
Nothing seems to work and after researching, all similar posts seem to be pertaining to actually plugging in to something and the fix was "clean connector" this is not my problem, error only happens if not plugged in. I'm assuming it's a bug from the last update but my girlfriends iphone is fine.
Would someone please help as the drain on my phone is rediculous now, it wasn't that good to start with but now the phone is pretty useless unless I'm near a plug! It's also very annoying having the screen constantly coming to life with this error message, especially at night.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Wayne.

I've not been able to find any new solutions so I thought I would try repeating everything I've tried again. I started by re-cleaning the connector as, logically my error only occurs when not plugged in to anything. To my amazement the problem is now resolved, I did take quite a while cleaning this time using toothpicks, cotton buds and nail varnish remover. So I geuss I should have cleaned it better in the first place! Doh! Anyway it's FIXED!!

  • Charging is not supported with this accessory iPhone 5 and lighting adapter

I just received my 30 pin lighting adapter for my iPhone 5 and connected it to my existing BMW (2008 335i) factory 30 pin cable.
The battery changes to the charge symbol for a few seconds and then I get a error on my phone that says "charging is not supported with this accessory".
Other than that I am able to search and play music from my phone through my car's audio system without isssue.
I have had this car for 4 years and used it with my 3rd generation iPod touch without issue. Wondering if anyone else is experiencing
charging issues with the new adapter and their exisiting setups,

I purchased the following adapter from Amazon for my 2009 335i, and all functions (including charging) work fine on my iPhone 5:

  • Charging Is Not Supported With This Accessory...Yeah...Right...Whatever...Liars!

I have been up, down and all over and keep seeing the same replies although I don't believe it's dust or moisture in the connector or that the USB is going bad.  I have had my ipad 1 for two years.  No issues.  I purchased an iPhone 4 mid-summer this year.  All of a sudden within a week or so of using the original cable I began to get the following message "charging is not supported with this accessory".
Now, I used the cord that came with it which should not have gone bad within a week or so.
Since then, and only since then, I am beginning to have the same issue with my iPad which I NEVER had issues with before.
Also, I have purchased at least ten USB cords and adaptors.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY REAL IDEA ABOUT THIS ISSUE??
I've always been a PC person and I was considering switching over to MAC until this.  I know Apple knows about this especially with all of the posts on APPLES's forum regarding this issue.  I'm really...really ****** that Apple would take advantage of its customers this way.  I'm not crazy.  Every reply offers the same suggestions yet, with the issues I have and in the order in which I've experienced them, the suggestions don't fit.
Some manufacturers consider the deaths their product will cause as a cost of doing business.  They figure settlements for the deaths are very small compared to the profit margin.  Apple has figured in this "possible" loss of customers as a cost of doing business.  Since this issue doesn't happen to everyone, or at least not enough people, a bandwagon can't get going.  So they figure there will be a few (thousands) of issues regarding the error "charging is not supported with this accessory," although it's Apple's accessory.  But not enough to make Apple pay attention!  Classic capitalism!
My freakin’ expensive iPad is one large glorified coaster!  Can you believe it?!  An $800 coaster!

Thanks for response. Do you work for Apple? For months I've been on the board searching for answers and this is the very first time I've ever come upon such a response that offers something new, as well as previous suggestions.
"It does this when is senses abnormal input to device or the Chip itself is faulty."
I would consider this if my iPad hadn't started this once I brought the iPhone home. If the chip is faulty or the port is dirty...iPad two years old...could be...iPhone brand new...I don't think so.
"...as stated "accessory is not supported or faulty""
Brand new cord(s)...Apple cords...how is it Apple cords don't support Apple products?
"The USB Cable connecting the devices is faulty..."
    Again, brand new cord(s)
"...or the device charging port is shorting either due to dirt or damage."
Too much of a coincidence. Two year old iPad, without any previous issues, and a brand new iPhone...???
    "Dirt can be cleaned..."
Too much of a coincidence. How much dirt can a new iPhone have?
"...replacement of charging dock assembly...Power Management Chip is faulty..."
Again, no previous issues with iPad until iPhone. Same issue on two different devices, one older and one new. Doesn't make sense.
"Replacement of the chip requires microsoldering skills."
    "I shouldn't need them."

  • Sudden issue: Charging is not supported with this accessory

    Hello -
I've had a 32GB 3rd generation iPod Touch since right around the new year. It's worked nearly perfect since January until today, when I plugged it into my PC to charge. I got the error "Charging is not supported with this accessory".
This seems odd to me since it's charged just fine on this machine for the last five months. I tried using two different cords, tested it on my wife's Mac and a dock we have in the kitchen, which in both instances it worked just fine. I tested my wife's 2nd generation iPod touch on my computer and it worked just fine. It's just MY iPod that isn't charging at my computer all of a sudden. I can access it via iTunes, it just won't charge.
I also tried blowing out the connector pins with some compressed air. I have a USB hub which I usually plug this into and I tried it both plugging directly into my USB port AND the hub and neither worked. I also had two USB cords, both from Apple (one of which had never been used before) and it still won't charge at my computer.
The only thing I can think of is I recently updated my iTunes, but I don't know why that software would affect whether or not the iPod charges.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Jer

No, I appreciate your asking but we only have two iPod's, both are touches, and I had been using the same cord for both with no problem for the last five months. I did try both cords I had though to no avail. I wish it were that simple!
So many people have commented about this particular error but it seems like very few people have had it actually happen suddenly after months of use with no problem. So frustrating.
Luckily I can still charge it with the same cord on my wife's computer with no problem or the dock we have in the kitchen. I just want to know why it has suddenly decided to stop charging on my computer.
    Thanks!

  • Error message charging is not supported with this accessory

I have an iPhone 3GS from Jul 2009. Fully updated. I normally charge it using a USB port on my MacBook Pro so it also syncs at the same time. This week began getting an alert on my phone which said "charging is not supported with this accessory". I resolved initially by unplugging/replugging the cord. In all cases the phone had been charging for some time before the alert appeared. In most cases the phone was sitting on the same surface as the macbook and had not been moved since beginning charge.
The only support document I can find refers to firewire and does not apply to my device.
Since starting this week it is happening more frequently and may require being re-connected several times.
It is still intermittent issue but I depend on my phone.
    Thank you for your assistance

I just found some on eBay for about 1.99 each with free shipping and ordered about 6 of them from the seller, I think they came from China so it takes a couple weeks. So far I never got a bad cable, but if you do use eBay please check their feedback to make sure they have a history of delivering quality cables and working cables. Always pay using PayPal if possible so you don't lose your money. There are online sites like Meritline and such that have cheaper cables for direct sales with PayPal checkout and free shipping.
I use the 6' cable in the car, so I don't have figure where to put the iPhone or iPod when plugged into the stereo and it is helpful to have them when trying to charge when the plug is being a dresser or something when I travel.
I also like the retractable cables ($0.99)
I also have the Scosche FlipSYNC Keychain cable too, a bit expensive, but you always have a cable with you just in case.

  • IPhone 4 on iOS 5 not charging, getting a error saying "Charging is not supported with this accessory" Help?

I got a replacement of this iPhone 4. Probably a month or so. I've been taken good care of this phone, but I keep getting this pop up saying "Charging is not supported with this accessory". I've blowed on this 30 pic connector, cleaned it and everything and there still haven't been a solution. I restored it and restore it to a backup. I have to disconnect my iPhone in order to get it to work. Any suggestions? Help?

No, it is a problem with YOUR phone, not all phones. My phone does not have this problem. You have dirt or moisture in the connector on the bottom of the phone, a bent pin, or a bad cable. Get a magnifying glass and look into the connector. Clean out the lint and fluff that is almost certainly there. A dry toothbrush is a good tool, or a wood toothpick. Inspect for bent pins. If you see a red dot in the connector opening it means that your phone has water damage.

  • My iPod touch 4G suddenly pops up with 'charging is not supported with this accessory' no matter what cord or source I use. It worked fine for months before this. What can I do?

This is crazy!  I love my iPod but it suddenly has a charging issue. Please HELP! I had absolutely no problem charging it for 7 or 8 months. Then last week I started getting an error message every time I try to charge it. I used to be able to charge it through my PC, PS3, wall adapter or car adapter. Now I get this message no matter where I try to charge it or with what cord! It says, 'charging is not supported with this accessory'. It happens after about 3-5 min of charging. Then I have to unplug it and plug it back in to keep charging it!  How or why did this happen and how do I fix it?

If you did not do a reset of your iPod please try that (you will not lose any data)
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If this does not work inspect the opening in your iPod where the cable connects. Look for any debris and clean it (a magnifying glass may be required).

  • Why does my iPod(3rd gen) say charging is not supported with this accessory even though its not plugged in?

I was eating breakfast one morning playing a game on my iPod and it slipped out of my hand and into my cereal bowl. So immediately I took off the case and put in a bag of rice for a day and a half to let it dry out. Then when it started working again (thankfully) a notification popped up saying charging is not supported with this accessory after I unplugged it from the wall. So I thought nothing of it and pressed dismiss. Now when ever I wake it up, instead of my wallpaper popping up in the lock screen that stupid notification does. How can I get rid of it? Also my home button doesn't work anymore so I have to use asisstive touch instead. How do I take a screen shot without the assisting touch menu in the way? Thank you.

    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • HELP!!! "Charging is not supported with this accessory" suddenly happening CONSTANTLY with iphone 4

Suddenly without warning my IPhone 4 has been giving me a "charging is not supported with this accessory error" every time I plug it into ANY charging device.  That means my car charger, USB to the PC... USB to a macbook pro... Directly to the wall with the included charger, etc.  It doesn't matter.  I guess I'm past the 1 year warranty so Apple is not any help.  Essentially I'm supposed to accept that my $200 (with a contract) phone has a 1 year life span and that I should be completely fine with it becoming useless out of nowhere.  Here's some facts.
#1 - It has nothing to do with 3rd party accessories.  One day it was working... one day it wasn't.
#2 - I cleaned lint out of the charging port on the phone.  That was the first thing I tried. I used compressed air to blow it out, I used a soft bristle tooth brush...  It's lint free.  It has nothing to do with lint.  I understand this is the most likely cause of the problem.
#3 - When I plug it into a PC or macbook via USB, I'm able to access the IPhone 4 like I ALWAYS have.  In other words, I can see pictures, I can back up the phone, I can restore the phone, I can transfer music, sync, etc.  So this would presumably rule out the idea that it's the dock connector, right?  Why would USB work, but the charging function will NOT work?
#4 - On that note, I was able to update the software to the latest version 5.1.1.  That was one of the first things I tried.  No dice.  I still get the "charging not supported with this accessory" error literally every time I plug it in with a yellow triangle icon... Seen here for example: http://tapatalk.com/mu/4c5f44af-af20-d86c.jpg .
#5 - So since it's not charging, the phone inevitably dies.  Here's the weird part... if I leave it plugged into the wall/pc/mac/car when it's dead... eventually it will charge enough to turn back on.  But once it's back on... that **** error will pop back up, it will stop charging... and inevitably die again.  So then... that would suggest that it actually IS capable of taking a charge... it's just that something in the software is preventing it from charging when the software is active, no?  Am I off base here?
#6 - So I decided I'd take it to the genius bar to have them look at it.  Right before I did that, I got the brilliant idea to try using an alcohol swab on the dock connector just to make sure it was super duper extra clean.  Oddly enough, it suddenly started working without the error.  It was working on every charger I tried.  Wow.  I thought I had fixed it.  A day later it started happening again, though.  Bizarre.  I've tried the alcohol swab thing again and it didn't make a difference... maybe it was just a fluke.... the one day I take it to the Apple genius bar and it works.  Go figure, right?
#7 - The only helpful thing the tech at the Apple Genius Bar was able to tell me was that the phone did NOT have any kind of water damage.  That rules that out.  No water damage in the charging dock OR the headphone jack.  So there's that.
#8 - Since it's no longer under warranty... I took it upon myself to buy a replacement battery via Amazon.com and installed it myself.  Didn't make a difference... still the same error.
What, if anything, can I try?  Could it really be the dock connector?  Should I try replacing the dock connector?  Is there any software-related thing I can try?  Has this happened to anyone else?   Apple has essentially told me it's my problem.  From my perspective... any product that randomly stops working a little over a year is a faulty product.  I'm not pleased at all.

Tried at least 6 different cables.  It isn't the cable.  All of them worked one day... then stopped working the next day.  My girlfriend has an identical Iphone 4 and all of the cables still work for her.
Interesting point on the data and power using different pins.  So your suggestion would be to replace the dock connector?  Found this on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Apple-iPhone-dock-connector-cable/dp/B003UGVOO2/ref=sr_1_1 ?ie=UTF8&qid=1338277549&sr=8-1 ... and found a tutorial online:  http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-iPhone-4-Dock-Connector/3147/1#.T8SG_sXWu -o  ... Sounds like that might be my best bet here.
It's just odd to me that the phone gives me that error and refuses to charge... then inevitably dies.  But once the phone is dead, it starts charging enough to actually turn back on.  Isn't that slightly odd?

  • 'Charging is not supported with this accessory' But phone isn't plugged in!

Hi, I spilled a small bit of water on my iPhone about 2 weeks ago.I put it in rice for 2 days and left it to itself for a while and its working again ( except the home button is broken). But the ' Charging is not supported with this accessory message' stays on my screen while the phone is locked when it ISN'T plugged in.It still charges, but this message appears when the phone isn't connected to anything.I cleaned the connector and this actually fixed a problem I had that meant the phone wouldn't play music, but this message is still on the screen.Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

Try Jailbreaking it, it should do something, and because you have your device on iOS 5.x then i recommend that you use Absynth to Jailbreak your device, that may get rid of the message, you might anlso try restoring your iPhone completely or just from a back-up, or if you do jailbreak your device you could delete the launch daemon that gives you the notification...
    Hope this helped a bit

  • IPod Touch 4G "charging is not supported with this accessory"

My iPod Touch 4g has been getting the message "charging is not supported with this accessory" ever since iOS 5, and I just recently updated to iOS 6.
I currently use an Apple brand charging cord and a 3rd party charging cord, and none of them work.
I've been looking around in forums and there have been several temporary fixes that haven't worked for me, such as:
    - closed all apps
    - purchased a new cord
    - did a hard reset
    - updated USB drivers
    - updated iPod Touch driver
    - updated iTunes( just covering all bases here)
    - plugged my iPod in several other computers
    - tried putting it in airplane mode, then turning the iPod off, and then plugging it into the computer
    - and cleaning out the dock with compressed air as well as the USB ports on my computer
Does anyone with a permanent solution? Because this is starting to get very irritating...

    Not Charge

    - Try another cable.
    - Try another charging source

  • 'Charging is Not Supported With This Accessory - Dismiss' message ..!!!

Hi. ..tried looking for an anwer to this - lots of questions about it and no solutions!! yet...
Infuriating little problem.. got a Belkin ipod car connector a while back for my Honda, hard wired thru car stereo. Worked great on previous iphones and ipod touche etc...tunes on the move without one of those awful cassette adaptor things... anyway get my new iPhone4 and now all I get is the message
'Charging is Not Supported With This Accessory - Dismiss' every few seconds which interrupts the music playback.. maddening! so cant play music in car .... very occasionally it stays away long enough for one song but usually it happens every few seconds. Anyone come up with fixes for this? Or yet another example of us being persuaded to buy more accessories? I dont want it to charge I just want it not to stop playing.... please help .... Im a pro musician and the tune-less car is killing me. KB

I had the same issue and the only solution I found was to buy a higher amp charger. I got an incase wall/car charger that works great and runs at 2A. I'm guessing the iPhone 4 requires more power to charge. I would not only get the message you describe but the phone wasn't charging either.
The incase charge looks great too.

  • IPhone 4 "Charging is not supported with this accessory"

I am using the IPhone 4 IOS 6.1.3 and receiving the warning "Charging is not supported with this accessory".
I changed the cords and cleaned the ports with a wire, then compressed air.
Brought it intro the Genius Bar and still having an issue, Apple thinks it may be a damaged port.
I refuse to believe that since it will still accept a charge and will data transfer to my laptop.
    Any ideas on fixes?

Does this message appear when anything is plugged into the dock connector or a specific device?
If the former, the port is damaged.
If the later, the device causing the message is the problem.
