How to fix icon View in finder

How do I snap the Icons to a grid? Also, is there a way to sort by Date Modified, Name, File Type, etc. when I'm in Icon view??? I know you can do it in the list view. Is there a way to make the icons bigger? Here is the current situation:

List view is your best option for sort parameters Date Modified, Name, File Type, etc.
Finder>View>Show Path Bar   for slider control icon size at bottom
Finder>View>Show view options (command J)>SORT BY>Snap to grid

  • Icon view in Finder windows do not autowrap

    I am using 10.5.1 on a 17" MBP 2.16 ghz.
Since installing Leopard, Icon view in Finder windows do not autowrap and Finder windows do not always remember their display preferences.
The Trash auto-wraps (the icons spread to take up the entire window if it is enlarged) But Opening a Folder in my default list view and switching to Icon view and then enarging the window only shows icons in the original window width. EG, If it were 3 colums of icons, it stays 3 columns of icons unless I use Clean Up TWICE and then I get 10 columns of icons which will wrap.
Is this a Leopard BUG or a local problem. Any suggestions on fixing it?
    TIA,
    Bill

Yeh - though I use cmd-J which I have used since it appeared, 10.1?
But I just solved my problem. In my use as defaults selection, I had Snap to Grid selected in the arrange by pop-up rather than by Name.
Selecting Name and clicking on Use as Defaults makes things work as expected.
Thanks for making me look closely!
    Cheers,
    Bill

  • How do I sort by date with oldest first in icon view in Finder?

In Finder, when I view "As Icons", and "Keep Arranged" by "Date Created", it sorts them in reverse date order with the most recent first. But if I try to check the "Date Created" option again over this already checked option, it doesn't ever sort in ascending date order with the oldest first. Is there any way to sort with oldest first?

If you ever find the answer, I'd love to know as well. How odd is it that you can do this. I tried several searches for this in software hacks, and applications that let you alter icon views and the like. Can't believe the limited interest in correcting it either.
I was looking for a way to display screen shots of various jpeg elements with files names that double as instructions in a tutorial. Icon view allowed me to see pictures in a large enough size to use as instructions with the corresponding file names. All I would have had to do was screen shots assembled into a PDF and I would have been done. Having to retype every instruction along with copy, and pasting into a new document and so forth is more than double the work for any set of pictorial instructions.
Maybe Garage Band or some other application is the workaround until then. I'll let you know if I ever find a better workaround, or the solution.

  • Icon View in Finder sort order is reversed

    Hi,
In Finder, when using icon view, the "arrange by">"date modified" order has reversed. I can't find any settings to change it back.
Other views such as list view are working normally. The change happened yesterday evening and appears to affect all folders. Rebooting makes no difference.
Please can anyone tell me how to correct this?
    Thanks

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    Try deleting this file.
    com.apple.Finder.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences.
Move that file to the Trash and restart your Mac.

  • How to fix icons missing?

    Hi
I have MacBook Pro Retina 15 with 16 GB RAM.
And I did stupid thing, I just turn off the swap file and using for a day my laptop. On the next day when I open my macbook, navigation icons in safari, finder, and in others apps, just dissapear. (system icons, like +/- and arrows, in finder all lest side dissapear and many others)
Then I turn on swap file back, and restart. But is't not helpd.
I tried just reinstall system and it helpd for half of day.
I tried to restore permissions, for account and fully.
    I tried reset the VRAM.
I tried to reboot in verbose mode
    I tried some more things
And one more interesting thing, I checked Keychain and it has alot duplicates of my login.
Please help me to fix it.
I created the another one user and it's ok, but when I login in to previous it still without icons.
But I want fix old one, because it has alot of custom things.
    Many thanks!

Boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
The screen should give you these choices...
    Restore from TM backup
    Reinstall Mac OS X
    Get help online
    Disk Utility
First run Disk Utility Repair Disk, if you get errors run until no errors reported or reports "the disk cannot be fixed". Then, choose Reinstall OS X. This will be an install "in place" and shouldn't effect any of your own data or settings.
Be sure you have or make a good backup or make one.
EDIT: Oh wait... the other user is okay. I can't understand how missing swap files would effect only your own user.
    Did you delete from private/var/vm?

  • Icon View in Finder using Yosemite

I currently upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks, but I've noticed that when using Finder (and it defaults to opening files via Icon view) I don't see my files.
When I switch to list or column view, I see my files.
    Anyone else having this problem?

I have the same issue on my rMBP 15". I reported this as well during the open beta. I went back to my Mavericks backup because I though it might have to something with the installation. Now I installed the final and the problem is back.
Sometimes the files do show up but the name tag is distorted and interacting with them, e.g. selecting them, opening folders, works but Finder will still show the files with the distorted names although I'm already in another folder. I made some screenshots.
Already reset the PRAM, repaired the drive and permissions with no effect.
Edit: it happens very randomly when opening folders or new finder windows. The only thing where I can see regularity is when unzipping a file – that folder will initially always be broken.

  • How to print list view of Finder window

I want to print a list of the contents of a disk or a folder, just as I see it in the Finder's list view. How is this done in Tiger? In some older versions of the OS there was a menu command for this operation, something called Print Directory, I think.

There may be more user-friendly ways of doing this, but here's one way:
Open Terminal (in the Utilities folder).
Use "cd" to change directory to the folder you want to print
    eg cd /Users/myuser/Documents
Use "ls" to list the contents to a file
    ls -al > filelist.txt
You can then open the filelist.txt file from Finder in TextEdit and print it.

  • How to fixed some view on the top of  your windows for WD?

as title as said.i  have a windows(named <b>winA</b>),which included three views(named <b>viewA,viewB,viewC</b>)) in it(windows'viewset (row,column)=(1,3)), for some reasons, the high of winA is often exceed  out of the protal  displayed hight in IE when <b>viewA,viewB,viewC</b> are visual. So i wanna to fixed the <b>viewA</b> to the top of the winA ,no matter what the  protal  displayed high exceed or not. this is to say,for anytime <b>viewA</b> can be seen from u IE,no need to drag scroll bar from the  bottom to the top.
maybe u suggest to put viewB and ViewC into seperately ScrollContainer control of WD.
but i don't wanna to got  two scroll bars appeared  in IE,and i still wanna to hold <b>viewB </b>and<b> viewC</b>.
          any adivce is welcome.

    hi,
you can do it in the following way:
1...use the T-Viewset(the left side is not wasted. Adjust the width)
2...Assign the "Height" & "width" properties of your root containers(of the three views) to be around 60 or 70% (depends on how much space is avaliable on portal screen)
3...If your viewA is something like a banner(without any funcitonal UI elements in it), then why dont you put it up as a Portal-Banner. That way  you can get rid of viewA..n hav only viewB

  • Snap-To-Grid Finder feature doesn't work for mounted data CDs (Icon View)

I always use Icon View in Finder. And I AM aware of the CMD+J --> Arrange by --> Snap-To-Grid feature. I've set it for all my other Finder windows for my startup drive, and it works. (Actually, I set it to auto-arrange by Kind.) I've even used it as the default setting by clicking the "Set As Defaults" button at the bottom of the View Options window.
But there seems to be a weird glitch where every time I insert a burned data CD with icon folders and such, my Finder window always opens a mess of icons, one on top of each other. I keep setting it back to CMD+J --> Arrange by --> Kind, and the icons organize into grids right after. I click "Set As Defaults" again. But when I eject the CD, then mount it again, Finder gives me a mess of one-on-top-of-the-other icons all over again. What gives? I just want to be able to set all my files to auto-arrange in Finder by Kind.

But when I eject the CD, then mount it again, Finder gives me a mess of one-on-top-of-the-other icons all over again
    Of course it will.
The CD is read-only - it can't be written to. Since the window position, view settings, layout, etc. are stored in the directory, there's no way for the Finder to write the changed settings back to the disk before you eject it.
The issue occurs because what you're seeing is how the window was laid out when the disk was burned in the first place.
Your solution is to re-burn the disk, positioning the icons where you want them before starting the burn.

  • Finder: graphic issues while in icon view

    Hi there,
my Macbook Pro becomes more and more sluggish since i upgraded to Yosemite. Worst thing i noticed is icon view in Finder. It does not show up correctly and has some weird graphic issues. I made a video while using the guest account: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jo5JUnmK6n4&feature=youtu.be
    Any idea?
    Thank you!
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13', Mitte 2014), 2,8 GHz Intel Core i5, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel Iris 1536 MB

We were discussing this issue on this thread: Re: Anybody else getting black bars on Finder items names?
This graphic issue only appears in icon view as you have stated. The workaround was to put everything in list view.
I have been testing for the last week or so, with Icon view after deleting the com.apple.finder.plist. So far it's a lot better.
My MBP [Late 2013] was a dog after the Yosemite upgrade.
I ended up doing a SMC and PRAM reset, my performance is almost back to normal but not as good as when on Mavericks 10.9.5.
I hope Apple releases update 10.10.1 soon.
    Anyway, hope this helps.

  • Why won't my folders in finder expand in the icon view?

My folders will not expand in the icon view in finder. They also don't expand in the cover flow view, only list and column view show the contents within folders. It's affecting all the items in finder's sidebar. I found this rather bizarre. Has any one had a similar issue?

  • Finder Icon View Isn't Remembered

This is frustrating me a lot. I like using icon view in Finder, but now it never remembers it and keeps going back to column view. The column view as deafult button in finder prefs is not checked, I tried erasing the .plist file for finder prefs, and it's still always using column view. Please help me. Thank you.

Anything in this thread that might help?

  • Low-rez or no thumbnails in Cover Flow & Icon views!

Cover Flow used to display sharp and clear high-resolution jpeg previews, but now it display either low-rez previews for most or nothing at all for some. In Icon view, the Finder used to be able to generate thumbnails for jpeg files that don't have icons, but now many jpeg files are just blank in Icon view.
Does this have anything to do with the newer updates?

This problem hit me suddenly about two days ago. Can't seem to fix it. Haven't tried rebuilding Spotlight index yet, trying to avoid it, but that might solve the issue. Perhaps before I leave for the day that's what I'll do, and see how things are in the morning.
FYI, others have this issue as well:
