I have had my mac for only 1 year and still getting use to the troubleshooting. My Imac keeps getting stucking on spinning circle when I shut down or reboot. I have unplugged all my external hard drives and printer. Nothing seemed to work. Can someone point me in the right direction.

You might want to make sure that there are no open applications when you shut down, one of them may be hanging your Mac trying to shut down. Another thing to look for is to make sure that there are no print jobs that are not complete. Open the print and scan preference pane, double click your printer and see if any things hanging there.

  • How to fix Imac 8.1 on Windows black screen problem?

Firstly when I originally got this machine it seemed (about 4 years ago), sometimes had my Pc forget the keys shortcuts for the Mac)
Anyway over the last year I have the problem where I'd be in the middle of doing something on the Windows side then randomly go black. Strangely this doesn't effect the Mac side on my Boot Camp.
After some testing on the Windows side I noticed this screen doesn't force the black screen when I'm either watching a video using 'Media player' or playing a game like 'STO' or 'KOTOR'. Also I wouldn't mind the black screen if it was temp but the thing is it stays black until I hard-reset the Imac.
Anyway does anyone have any idea's on how to fix this? It's been a problem for the Windows side for a while, haven't had much luck trying to fix the issue so the video playing 'idea' was always a temp solution till I can find a way to fix the issue. (The problems exists on both Windows 7/8 but now using windows 8 again because had to replace my broken hard drive recently).

Ive downloaded loads of apps on this device in the past with the same firmware just fine.... Also it does the same thing when i try to update apps.... Please tell me how to fix this

I don't normally do this for people but... This was irritating me as well....
It looks like the auto update for apps is causing this..
Turn off your auto updates under SETTINGS -> iTunes & App Store
I ended the AppStore app and the opened it and all the pending apps I had purchased downloaded instantly!
Late reply but hope it helps!!!
-no I didn't check to see of there was an answer already!
again, I can't take credit - but wanted to share (the) solution - hard reset didn't do it for me (and I didn't want hassle of Restore Device if something simpler would work.

  • Install 10.3 on iMac 266 Stops at spinning circle after "Preparing Install"

I have an iMac 266. I'm trying to install OS X 10.3 on it.
I got it with 32MB of RAM. I tossed in some memory I had around and got it up to 256MB. (Two 128's.)
    Boot from OS X 10.3 disc 1.
Grey Apple logo appears with spinning circle thing under it on white background.
    It waits about 2 minutes.
System spins up CD-ROM drive and screen turns to blue background with mouse arrow. A box saying "Mac OS X: Preparing Installation" appears with a progress bar. (There is still a mouse arrow.)
That box disappears and is replaced by another spinning circle thing near the bottom-center of the screen. The mouse arrow disappears with the box.
The system stays that way. The spinning circle thing animates and does nothing further. I've switched CD-ROM drives as well.
I've also tried installing various Linux (for PPC) operating systems to see if they can point to any problems for me.
    -SuSe 9.2 PPC
    -Mandriva LE2005 PPC
    -Yellow Dog v4.01
The only one that installed was Yellow Dog.
I would rather have OS X.
What is the deal here? I've spent 3 days on this so far...
I'm actually also a Mac newbie at this point. It's been years since I messed with my last Mac.
    Be gentle. LOL

You can install OS X on a 6GB drive, but it's really too small. Unfortunately, the iMac you have requires OS X be installed in a partition or drive less than 8 GBs. One particular reason why the iMac you have is not that well-suited for OS X. It's too slow, doesn't have the video horsepower, and OS X can't be installed on a volume larger than 8 GBs. However, if all you want to do is play with it you certainly can.
    Do the following:
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. Insert the OS X installer disc in the optical drive, restart the computer. As soon as you hear the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the computer starts up from the CD. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu to one (1). Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After the above is completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now proceed with the OS X installation.
Regarding the hard drive jumpers, they should be set for MASTER. The iMac only supports one internal hard drive.

  • How to Fix iMac

Ok so here's what happened. I installed Windows 7 64 bit on my brand new iMac (2011 with a mountain Lion) using Boot Camp Assistant. I followed all of the instructions and it worked fine (even Mountain Lion). So I wanted all of my files to be on it too so I booted from a Windows 7 Recovery cd and tried to restore my Windows 7 to an image back up from my external hard drive. Now for some reason. Windows 7 gets the blue screen of death and reboots my Mac every time I try to use it. Worse yet, my Mountain Lion OS is completely gone. I can only choose Windows. So I tried my friend OSX cd ( I believe it was Snow Lepoard) to re install it and I get this grey screen telling me to reboot and it will not work even when ai hold down C to boot from the disk. I bought it from Future Shop and it did not come with any restore CDs. So how can I get my copy of Mountain Lion back and run it like normal?

EDIT: Now when it boots it the screen goes black and it says "No Operating System". It no longer recognizes the mouse and keyboard and even worse, someone else Snow Lepoard is stuck in the cd tray (because I. was trying to boot from it).

  • How to fix iMac g5 - 17" overheating problem

    Hi,
I have an iMac G5 (17") which seems to be overheating. The fans turn-on about 10-15 min after start-up. Occasionally, the machine will go to sleep. Not the usual sleep-mode but a sleep mode in which all processes seem to stop.
If I place the machine near an open window with a stream of cool air all the sysmptoms disappear so I feel overheating is a reasonable diagnosis.
Any ideas about fixing this ?

I have had the random shut down problem for months, however, thing were fine for 2.5 years previously. I have an Imac G5 made in June 2005, and I believe my problem was due to over heating. I finally discovered this...there is a "?program?" in your imac called the SMU, the System Management Unit. The SMU controls everything electrical in your computer, all power routing. You can reset the SMU in my computer by unplugging all cables from the computer and then removing the power plug in the back for ten seconds or so and then when you plug the power cord back in, simultaneously hold down the start up button. Once plugged in let go of the start up button. Plug back in your other cables and hit the start button again. Since doing this the computer has worked properly under stress for the past 72 hours, ie., internet always on, all programs opened, repeated sleep/wake cycles, etc. I believe that a fan or fans were not working for whatever reason, and that the machine overheated and shut itself off, and that by resetting the SMU it put the cooling system back on track. You can find out more about resetting the SMU at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767 You can probably find a way to similar info for your imac if not like mine from that site. Of course, as soon as I send this the ** thing will shut down....hahahaha. The worst thing about this is the complete and total silence from Apple, and it will be quite sometime before I buy another Imac. Good luck.

  • How to fix line of stuck pixels on ipod nano 4g?

Last week a vertical line of stuck grey pixels have been showing across the screen of my ipod nano 4g. None of the ipod's functions appear to be affected, but I was still wondering if there was a way to fix it because it's very noticable.

You can go to a Apple Store and ask them the question, perhaps, they can repare it.

  • Stuck between spinning circle and Apple logo...

I realise everyone is having issues, but they seemed to be related to issues once the phone actually connects to iTunes. About 4 hours ago my phone did connect and try to upgrade etc, and I got the 3200 error. HOWEVER now all my phone is doing is switching between the Apple logo and spinning wheel of death... ANYONE know what the **** I do? None of my 3 computers will even recognise it's plugged in...

  • OSX Maverick iMac Resolution: stuck at 640x480. How do I fix this?

    This is my iMac:
    - 21.5 inch
    - late 2012
    - 2.9 Ghz Intel Core i5
    - NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512MB
    - OSX 10.9.2
After updating to Mavericks, the screen resolution somehow got stuck at 640x480 and I'm unable to change it. Going into display settings and holding down the "options" key, does not show ANY display resolution options (see image attached). Any ideas on how to fix this?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.
