How to Fix iPhone 4 Broken Camera, Camera Roll or Photos?

Upgraded an iPhone 4 to iOS 5.
After a few '3200' errors the update appeared to be fine. Camera worked normally. During the post-update dialogs on phone, I opted to use iCloud. Later that night I did a manually backup and went to bed. Note that I did NOT opt for the "Photo Stream" backup since I have no other iOS devices.
For the record, this iCloud method apparently removed the backup on my MacBook Pro in Library > Application Support > MobleSync (or some such path) so no backup remains on computer.
Next day, I took a photo and watched as its "icon" dropped to the square in the lower left of the Camera app. I immediately clicked this square (which had turned immediately turned black) to view my photo and got a default screen with "All" "Photos" "Videos" at top saying: "No Photos or Videos". This message is clearly wrong since I used to have approx 100 photos plus the new one just snapped. Tried the same for videos. Same result.
Using a product called "PhoneDisc" I viewed the various folders on the iPhone. All my photos are there. As protection, I made a copy of the folder to my MacBook desktop. It is DCIM > 100APPLE if i recall.
I tried a manuall sync of this one folder (100APPLE) which did nothing I can see. Folder on iPhone remains unchanged and camera app behavior remains corrupt.
Other observations:
Pre-upgrade photos used for Contacts remain in place as do both the Lock Screen and Desktop photos.
WHen I go to Settings > Wallpaper and navigate as if to try a new wallpaper photo, I get a white button (no text) and a right pointing arrow. In iOS 4, this button would have said "Camera Roll" if I recall. When I click the right arrow I get a white screen with a button at top labeled "Back".
When I click the "Photos" icon (app) on desktop, I get a black screen with no photos.
HELP!!      What do I do?     Be specific with answer.     Thanks!

RONxBURGUNDY: First of all, there are no DLLs on a Mac. Presuming you made a typo, the PhoneDisk app simly does one thing. It mounts the internal disk on the iPhone (and other similare devices I would guess), and while mounting the disk it quits so quickly that you might think it crashed. Nonetheless, on a Mac, the side pane (for lack of a term) to any finder window should show the mounted drive(s). Your phone should be one of them. From there, just double click on the side pane icon and you will have a window to the internal phone'd drive.
Rest easy, the pix are most certainly on the phone. If they are, just copy them to your computer desktop and you'll have them in some form.
My own solution was to call 1-800-MYIPHONE and have them walk me through everything. It was convoluted and I'd not attempt it myself if I were you. We reset the phone to virgin with iOS5 and did a sync. But I reiterate, it is not intuitive and you will sure f**k it up.
I consider this, my own email, the solution to my original posted problem.
