How to fix jaggy font display problem?

I upgraded to Snow Leopard from Leopard a few days ago and have been having font display problems ever since.
When I first upgraded, everything seemed fine, but then Word wouldn't display Arial. So, I validated fonts in Font Book and discovered a bunch of dupes. When I deactivated the dupes, that problem was resolved. But, a new problem occurred. Many of the fonts throughout various applications (Mail, Safari, Finder) appeared jaggy.
I tried playing with text smoothing and LCD font smoothing, but neither seemed to have much, if any, effect.
Then, I decided that I hadn't had a good font cleanup for several years, and maybe all the dupes and other detritus were part of the problem. So, I literally deleted all my  fonts from system/library, root/library and user/library (I copied some into a .zip archive for safe keeping) and reinstalled Snow Leopard and all current updates. Then, I fixed permissions twice (though there are always permissions that won't fix) and booted into single user and did an fsck.
But, after all that, my jaggy problem still persists
It's really strange in that it appears worse at some times. And, doesn't seem to be present in all apps. Here's a screenshot from YouTube with Safari on the left (bad jaggies) and Chrome on the right (no jaggies).
I'd really appreciate some help. Any ideas?

Start with something relatively simple, like clearing the font cache files.
Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and all user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.
This does not clear the font cache files for Word (Office), which keeps its own such items.
Close all Office applications. Remove the following files. The tilde (~) indicates your home account.
~/Library/Caches/com.microsoft.browserfont.cache
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Font Cache (11)
For Office 2008, the location of the second item is:
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Office Font Cache (12)
For Office 2011, the location is:
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2011/Office Font Cache

  • How to fix a font encoding problem in PDFMaker for Word?

I've just been upgraded to a new computer at work, and I'm finding that a custom font I need is not appearing correctly in PDFs I create using the PDFMaker plugin for Word.
The font (Helvetica Fraction) is a Type 1 font with a custom encoding scheme. If I just print to the PDF driver, then look at the font embedding in the resulting PDF, Helvetica Fraction is listed as Type 1, Custom Encoding, and text set in Helvetica Fraction appears correctly.
If I use the PDFMaker plug-in to create a PDF from the same document and then examine the embedding, Helvetica Fraction is shown as Type 1 (CID) with an encoding of Identity-H. In this case, text set in Helvetica Fraction does not appear. There is text in those places, but if I try to highlight it and copy it over the Clipboard on my computer, all I get is strings of capital Zs.
So far, I've tried removing unneeded fonts from my system, clearing my font cache, setting different joboptions files in PDFMaker, reducing the output resolution to 600 dpi, and turning off as many advanced options as possible. Any additional recommendations?
My current setup: Office 2007, Acrobat 9, Windows 7.
    Thanks!
    -- Brian M.

I normally leave the "rely on system fonts" checkbox on. When I look at a Word document that's experiencing this problem, Word is not substituting another font for Helvetica Fraction.
Meanwhile, I've also purchased an updated copy of the font, which did not help either.

  • I tried to fix an email display problem by deleting

I tried to fix an email display problem--only a quarter of the messages appear on the screen--the second time this happened--by deleting my accounts and re-entering them. Now although the mail icon on the home page says I have 30+ messages, when I click on it, I get a screen with the word Mailboxes at the top but nothing underneath and nothing else on the screen except two blank boxes. In one it says "No Message Selected". How do I reset mail when this happens again as I assume it will.

    Hey PGP,
My suggestion would be remove the email, restart the ipad and then connect to that specific e-mail. Sometimes some emails hosts tend to have problems with specific device. You were not clear what email service you are trying to connect it with.
I hope this helps. (If it did, don't forget to rate as a helpful answer)
If not feel free to give me a shout.
    Best of luck.

  • Font display problem in Safari....

Hi-I am sure that this has been discussed here....... Anyway, on some pages in Safari the fonts are weird-there are large spaces between the letters and lots of S's and random capitalizations. None of the letters form a word. Is there a fix for this? I sent a bug report to Apple. Thanks for any help! Judy

I decided to go through Font Book and I disabled lots of fonts but not any system fonts. I have come across a couple though that I don't know how to fix them. One is Courier-there is a yellow triangle next to it and it says that there are multiple copies installed-it instructs me to us the Resolve Duplicates command to automatically deactivate the copies not in use. I tried that but nothing is resolved-they are still marked with the yellow triangle (there are 2 Regulars and 2 Bolds, one Oblique and one Bold Oblique-only of the Regular and Bold are marked with a yellow triangle). So it's Courier, Apple Symbols that are like this. Since Resolve Duplicates didn't resolve anything I tried Validate Font-that worked until I shut down the Font Book and then they were back with the yellow triangles. Also in the window for Validate Font there are many 'things' listed under Apple Symbols.ttf: 'cmap' table usablilty, 'hmtx' table usability, etc. all the way down to Duplicate Fonts which has a yellow circle with an exclamation point next to it-says minor problem, proceed with caution. Courier has 'things' listed too under Validate Font-Duplicate Fonts under Courier and under Courier Bold both. Not sure what all that means and I don't know how to fix those things-there is no check box next to them. Any ideas? I probably have succeeded in confusing you! Judy

  • How to resolve PDF font dropout problem?

    Hi,
We have Windows 64 bit machines, FM9, and Acrobat 9.4 Pro.  Very randomly and fairly regularly, big chunks of text simply do not appear in the PDF.  The spacing for the text is preserved but the text is missing (akin to the text being white and blending into the background).  Sometimes words in the paragraph that have a character format applied appear in the correct position, with the regular text around them missing.
Here are things we've tried so far without total success:
      - There was a similar issue back in the 32-bit days that I think Microsoft issued a hotfix for, but there is no 64-bit equivalent I can find.
      - Removing the windows\system32\fntcache.dat file and all the .otf fonts improves the result, but doesn't totally fix it.
      - Dropping the print DPI way down 144dpi seems to fix it, but the problem came back the next day
Does anyone know of this problem and a solution?  It sure seems like a memory leak, memory writing out of bounds kind of issue.  It also might be that the text that gets dropped in the last text that was entered, which, knowing how FM stores paragraphs, is not necessarily the last text in the file.  Funny thing is the problem is intermittent.  Rebooting seems to help, but not every time.
    Thanks,
    Dave

For those observing this thread, the hotfix is described and provided by Microsoft at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952909/en-us.
And yes, it did affect all flavours of Vista as well as Windows XP and Windows 2000.
However, Microsoft does not provide a hotfix for Windows 2000 (which was only 32-bit) or for Windows XP 64-bit. My best guess is that a Windows XP 64-bit solution was not provided due to the rarity of its use and Adobe's official lack of support for that environment. Unfortunately, the modules involved in the hotfix do have specific 64-bit versions. You cannot apply the 32-bit hotfix to a 64-bit system. The installer will most likely prevent that anyway which in this case would be a very good thing.
I normally try to avoid making recommendations for gratuitous OS upgrades, but quite frankly, XP 64-bit was quite a dog whereas Windows 7 64-bit is exceptionally stable and high performing. Although you would need to do an OS "clean install" to get to Windows 7 64-bit safely, that would be my best advice at this point. Note that you should also make sure that you have a reasonably high amount of RAM on your system to use Windows 7 64-bit at best advantage (we typically recommend minimums of 6 to 8GB).

  • Font display problem after updating to 10.5.5

After updating to 10.5.5, I have an identical font problem on two different machines: an iMac and a Macbook. The problem concerns font display on the screen and only occurs when viewing PDF files using Leopard's built-in facilities. So the problem shows up in Preview and in Safari, but not when viewing the same file in Adobe Acrobat. (There's also no problem with the same font in MS Word.)
The problem: Many italic characters in Times New Roman Italic display with (more or less) vertical strokes are rendered very thin. The result is a bizarre, distracting effect. The result is particularly noticeable with lowercase "o", but is widespread. I don't have the same problem with plain Times. It's possible other fonts have this too -- I haven't checked them all -- but most don't.
The problem appears to be related to anti-aliasing. When I turn this off in Preview, the display is of course not pretty, but the problem is otherwise entirely gone. (Times New Roman text and Times text now look basically the same.)
I've tried obvious things along the way: reinstalling the font from the system disk, flushing the font cache, etc. even reinstalling the 10.5.5 combo update. Nothing helps.
    Any suggestions?
(Here is a PDF file on the web that has this problem for me -- in case you want to check whether you have it too: http://www.latrobe.edu.au/linguistics/LaTrobePapersinLinguistics/Vol%2009/07Popo vic.pdf. Nothing special about this file, though. Any PDF in Times New Roman with italics has the problem for me.)

    V.K. --
Boy, I'm hoping Kurt will come in here,
but the page linked shows up perfect on my iMac.
I have yet to update to 10.5.5. I'm at 10.5.4.
But for you guys, what the h*ll?
I'll be back after I update.

  • How to Fix a font of the List in SAP INDOX

    Hi All,
I working on report where i need to send the document in txt file to the SAP Inbox for the User specified in the Selection Screen of the report. I used FM : SO_NEW_DOCUMENT_SEND_API1 which send a document in txt file. I am getting the document as txt in my SAP Inbox but <b>how should i fix the Font name for this list</b> which appeared on the Mail Box since the column structure of the list is not matching because the width of the each charactor differs from font. Hence i believe that it would be better to set it in non-professional font.
    Thankx in Advance.

    Hi alex,
In Ubuntu, click the following: System → Administration → Printing
In that dialogue there should be an option to remove the printer.

  • Chinese font display problem

In the javascripts of this web site http://weiqi.sports.tom.com/php/zhuanti/zhuantinew.php?id=23
( follow any red link in this page, there will be a javascript popped up), some chinese characters can not be displayed in the right text box and no matter how many changes I make in the fontconfig.properties file about the Chinese font, there is no change of the chinese characters in these java script pages (in the right text box and on the lowerright buttons).
I want to change all the chinese font displayed on the javascripts to the font "ar pl shanheisun uni", how to? Thanks.
My system is Ubuntu 7.04, locale is zh_CN.UTF-8. Jre 1.6.0 or Jre 1.5.0.
I used another Redhat 9.0 system(Jre 1.5.0_02), it can display these characters in the another chinese font. That system is not configured by myself. So I think there must be some way to change these fonts.
    Here is my fontconfig.properties file:

  • How to fix a text entry problem

Sometimes when I'm entering text with my keyboard it refuses to work. After starting TextEdit and typing a few characters (which always works), then going back to where I was, text entry works fine again. This problem is maddening!! Any idea what causes this or how to fix it? Thanks!!!!

Are you using a Magic Mouse with scrolling enabled.  That happens to me frequently when I somehow swip horizontally in an app.  All text entry or other use freezes until I reswipe back somehow.
Try changing the horizontal swipe from one finger to two finger in the System/Mouse preference pane and see if that will prevent the freeze.

  • How to fix the "MIME types" problem  !

    Hello !
How to fix the problem of "MIME types", Windows doesn't want to keep the APPS by default !!!
When I try the application by default (for ex. right clic on .PSD files and "open with"), then I validates the selection program (Photoshop.exe), it does not appear in the selection of programs by default in windows!
Result, even dynamic objects no longer open in my applications and all adobe files icon don't appear in explorer
    Thx

    I find a solution who works for me (Win7 64bit) !
Use a Registry cleaner (ccleaner) and kill old file format entry !
Now restart association with a .AI file, because the way to .exe is in another place like other apps !
    Try this:
First, right click on your illustrator apps icon (desktop or Start menu) and choose "open the file location" and copy the dir ("C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CC 2014\Support Files\Contents\Windows" for me )
Right clic on your .AI file and select "Open with", now click on "browse" to "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CC 2014\Support Files\Contents\Windows" for 64bit system.
"Windows" say "you've got problem with registry file association" the correction's automaticatly and the illustrator icon appear in the list of default apps.
    Select and valid him
Now, do the same for all your "unknown files type" with the good apps !

  • Appleworks 6/Font display problem in 10.6

Has anyone else struggled with the Menu WYSIWYG Font display scrolling so painfully slowly since loading 10.6.2 ?
It races as normal in 'names', but I need WYSIWYG when selecting .... now I may never see Zingbats again.
    Any suggestions ?
(I'm also placing this in the Appleworks Forum)

When AppleWorks behave slow or incorrectly there are some maintenance task to perform which usually does help.
Delete Recent items which you find in yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items
Delete com.apple.appleworks.plist found in yourname >Library>Preferences
While in Preferences Find the folder AppleWorks and delete the Appleworks preferences
Empty the trash and restart AW

  • How to solve the image display problem in the iTunes Store

    Hi guys!
I just want to give a work-around for all of you having the image display problem in the iTunes Store. In my case only the square images in the slider sections won't load:
I had this in my last W7-installation and got it again in W8 after the first few weeks.
There are a lot of reports about this problem out there and adhoc solutions like 'clear the cache' or 'reinstall and drink ice tea' that do not work. It is obviously a file request error. It is all about finding out which server addresses get blocked by your computer.
Solution: Go to your firewall and your Anti-virus-program. There must be a whitelist option. In Kaspersky, check the web-options, the banner-options and the firewall-options, because the all have whitelists. The following addresses have to be whitelisted:
    *.apple
    *.mzstatic.apple.com.akadns.net
    *.mzstatic.com.edgesuite.net
    *.da1.akamai.net
    *.itunes.apple.com
    se.itunes.apple.com
    upp.itunes.apple.com
    ax.init.itunes.apple.com
    xp.apple.com
    *.mzstatic.com
    client-api.itunes.apple.com
    www.apple.com.edgekey.net
    www.isg-apple.com.akadns.net
Press Ctrl + R in the iTunes Shop then and browse throught the music sections. All images should be displayed correctly now.
If not, there might be more Apple servers involved in your case. You can find them by running a DNS sniffing tool like the DNS query sniffer by Nirsoft or Wireshark.

Phone restarting randomly could be loose battery. Tighten by putting a small strip of electrical tape on the back edge.
THE BITTERNESS OF POOR QUALITY, LINGERS LONG AFTER THE CHEAPNESS OF PRICE, IS SOON FORGOTTEN.
