How to fix lost bookmarks in Safari on my iMac?

How do I recover my lost bookmarks? I've gone thru all the fixes posted at different support sites and nothing has worked. I started rebuilding my bookmarks and then lost those. This happens without a reboot or shutdown.

Using Time Machine restore:
com.apple.Safari.plist
You can find this file in:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
If you do not have a backup then they're gone.
The easiest method to do all this is:
Open a Finder Window - Go Menu - Click Go to Floder.. and copy and paste:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
tap the enter key
Open Time Machine, go back to a time you know the bookmarks were there and restore.

- Note that the manual presupposes you have Mountain Lion installed on your Mac, which is what it says in your message, so I'm assuming you have.
Also, I suppose you're not using iCloud. If you ARE using iCloud on your Mac and iPhone, I recommend using that for your bookmarks over USB-syncing. Here's the manual for that: iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Bookmarks and Reading List - Apple Support

Turn iCloud Bookmarks off and back on:
Quit Safari.
Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences, then click the icon for iCloud.

Close System Preferences and wait about a minute.

Do you have Windows 7 or XP? If you have Win7, install the iCloud control panel for Windows and set it up there (Ignore the fact that it shows IE in the control panel, once you check it off, you'll be able to select Safari).

I know see that you have to delete the search word(s) in the box after pressing command and f and type in a new word followed by return. That then works for one word or a name. Unfortunately it does not work for multiple searches as i was hoping, hence why it was not working for me ( unless together as in a name ) but it is certainly much better than nothing so thank you very much for your help - it is much appreciated. I have also since been informed that google chrome multihighlighter does multiple search highlighting once you download it from chrome website so i have everything covered now thanks as i have done that and it works in a similar manner.
It is very odd that you cannot do multiple searches automatically as you can on pc in google. To be honest that was the only thing that was far more intuitive to me personally about using a pc but now i have these two functions which are actually better than the automatic pc function i am all sorted. Much obliged.

For some reason I have lost all the bookmarks in Safari. I have tried to restore Safari from TimeMachine but I still don't get the bookmarks. Are these stored somewhere that I can retrieve them? If so how?

You need to go to File/Export Bookmarks (in Safari) on the G4, save the file to the Desktop.
(Target Disk Mode?) Then on the iMac in Safari, go to File/Import Bookmarks.

Lost bookmarks after Safari crashed

I just realized I lost all bookmarks when Safari crashed. When it crashed, I did the test account and Safari worked there. Then went back to my account and dragged the cookies file out, it worked again. I didn't think that would have affected the bookmarks. Are my bookmarks somewhere to be found? Thanks, Vicki

Did you trash the cookie.plist file & empty the trash if you did not empty it check the trash bin ? Moving the cookies.plist file out of the Cookies folder should not , I am sure it did not affect the bookmarks, something else must of happened.
Are you sure it was not the bookmark.plist file. Go to Home/~Library/Safari is there a Bookmarks.plist file there ?

renaming the file won't work - but if you enable the Debug menu... either by using a 3rd party app like Safari Enhancer; or as I did by pasting defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1 into a Terminal window after quitting Safari first, then you can choose 'import bookmarks' and point Safari to the html file from Firefox.
I actually have Tiger, so haven't seen this on Panther, but there have been plenty of threads where I've offered this suggestion, and it's worked out fine.

i had the same problem you describe. the simplest way i found to import my bookmarks from safari is to: with firefox open click on "bookmarks" then " show all bookmarks". you will get a folder titled "library". in the menu bar you will see a 5 pointed star. click on it to open the drop down box. one of the options is to "import data from another browser". then follow the instructions from there. this worked for me. hope this helps.

When you touch the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it at the top of Safari, are you then selecting Add Bookmark, and where are you then saving it ? If you are chosing Bookmarks Bar, as opposed to Bookmarks, then it will show across the top of the Safari screen when you open a new browser 'tab' - if you are chosing Bookmarks are you putting it into a folder ?
