How to fix permissions so everyone in office can read

In our office, we have two MacBook Pros (running Mavericks 10.9.2) and a Mac mini (running 10.7.5).
We're routinely running into problems reading & writing on the Mac mini for files and folders.
For instance, from my MacBook Pro, I just created a new folder under another folder on our Mac mini.  I saved 3 files there from my MacBook Pro.
But, now the person using the Mac mini can't open those files.
What's more is that, even though I created the folder and saved the files there, I can't change permissions for Staff or Everyone from "Read Only" to "Read & Write."
How can we permanently default all files on one MacBook Pro and the Mac mini to "Read & Write" access for everyone?
And, how can we create these same defaults for all files & folder ever created on the Mac mini?
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Create a sharing-only user on the file server in the Users & Groups preference pane. Make that user the owner of all the files in the sharepoint. All real users can then connect to the server as the new user and have full access to the files.

  • How To: Fix Permissions When "Everyone" Is Set To "No Access" On HD

I was messing around with the Permissions of the Macintosh HD. I set the "Everyone" option to "No Access," by right clicking on the Hard Drive and choosing "Get Info." Of course, when I reset the computer it would not boot up. I read numerous posts on this Discussions website, only to find solutions in which you have to enter suspicious commands in the Terminal. This made me uneasy of course, as I had no idea what those commands would do to my machine.
I tried Repairing Permissions, which did not fix the issue. Time Machine backups were hopeless.
I finally found a solution to this issue without having to enter suspicious commands into the Terminal:
Insert the original Snow Leopard install disc that came with the Mac. Power the computer off, then back on. Before you turn it back on, hold down the "c" button on your keyboard. It will take a minute or two, so keep holding it down until the "Languages" screen appears. Now, all that you have to do is follow the on screen prompts to reinstall the OS. *This did not erase any of my data.* The reinstallation took about 45 min, and all was well after that.
I decided to post this as I did not find a solution this simple anywhere during my search for a fix. Sorry if I may have posted this in the wrong forum. I hope this helps anyone experiencing the same issue.

Niel's guide is not some random post, it is in User Tips, which means Apple employees have looked at it. Personally, I would trust anything Niel says more than I would anything an actual Apple employee said anyway. Indeed, I would trust Niel's advice more than advice I would see anywhere else at all!

  • How to fix permissions?

    Hi,
I'm afraid I might have followed bad advice to solve a problem, which then got me into serious problems. Here's my "story":
I'm running Mac OSX 10.9.1 on an iMac (2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo). The computer is used by the whole family, so we have 6 user accounts.
Initial problem: The system requested an admin password every time I wanted to move an item to trash or away from the desktop.
After a bit of searching, I did the following:
Chose the Macintosh HD in a finder window.
Chose "Get info" and the Permissions-section.
Highlighted "System" and selected Apply all enclosed folders (this text might be slightly different in English, I run my system in Norwegian language)
This seemed to work, as I no longer need to type password for deleting/moving files. BUT NEW MAJOR PROBLEMS:
Now all other user accounts doesen't work properly any more:
No icons are visible on desktop of the other users
Finder windows on other user accounts closes by them selves whenever I try to do something
So first I went back to the user account in line nuber 2 above, where I had made the permission changes
Chose the Macintosh HD in a finder window.
Chose "Get info" and the Permissions-section.
Highlighted "System" and selected Reset changes (or whatever the bottom choice is in English)
No luck - problem still there
Ran Disk Utility, repair permissions twice - still no luck...
So if anyone have qualified suggestions on how to get the permissions right, please let me know.
    Thanks a lot!!
    Eldar
(Needless to say, but anyway: unqualified guesses are really not needed, as that's what escalated the problems from just having to type password to having 5 useless user accounts...)

    Hi,
considering your "background history", repairing the permissions was not a bad idea.
However, as explained in "About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature", repairing the Permissions with Disk Utility does not affect user data.
Here is what I can think about
    1. I already had issues with Disk Utility not performing as expected, while its command line counterpart never failed for me. I then suggest you to try repair permissions using Terminal
    diskutil list
(will give you all the volumes in your system with their disk identifiers)
    Then
    diskutil repairPermissions DISK_IDENTIFIER (e.g. diskutil repairPermissions disk0s2)
    2. Although your fist actions should not have changed these, you can also reset the ACL for each user.
(By the way, this Mac OS X 10.5 issue sounds like yours, and resetting ACLs is a listed option -> http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1334).
In Mavericks, however, you will have to
    - restart you system on the Recovery partition (holding CMD + R during boot)
    - once booted, select your language
    - in the menu bar, select "Tools" -> Terminal
    - in Terminal, enter "resetpassword" then hit enter
    - in the Reset Password Utility, select your drive, then select the user that has issues
    - do not enter a new password, just click the Reset ACL button at the buttom.
    - restart your system and test that user

  • How to fix permissions after a restore

I did a backup and restore of a site collection in 2010. Now subsites are unavailable with access denied error messages. How do correct this? I've done preliminary searchin for powershell commands but I'm not finding anything quickly...
Anyone have a link that will explain how to reset permissions on a site collection and/or its subweb's?
    Kevin W. Gagel

    Hi,
Try to login the subsite using  your application account.
If you can’t login it, please grant the full control in application policy of the application in Admin site.
How to do this, please refer to
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff608071.aspx
after you login in this site, you can reset the permissions.
    Hope this helps

Word, Excel and Powerpoint (all of Office 10.0) all stopped working today, but no other programs affected. • How to fix permissions in /Library/Audio/Plug-ins in Lion

I noticed that very annoyingly, Lion comes with the following default permissions for /Library/Audio/Plug-ins:
    drwxr-xr-x  9 root  wheel  306 Oct  7 07:37 Plug-Ins
That means that you the user cannot drag a plug-in in and out as you wish. What a pain in the butt!
    Simple fix:
    sudo chown -R myusername:wheel /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins
    sudo chmod -R 775 /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins
Now it's like it should be: you own your own darn folder!
Does anyone have a better way to do this? Like would you recommend just doing the chmod without the chown? Just curious. Also, I wonder why Apple made this curious modification to the system in Lion... it feels like they're increasing the level of restriction upon the owner of the computer from being able to use it themselves.

    1.Click on finder
    2. Look for GO menu at the top of the screen
    3. Click on it and select go to folder option
    4. Paste  or type /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components there
    5. Navigate to this folder
    6. Copy and paste the component to that folder. It should ask if you want to replace the original file(files). Click on yes
    Hope this will help

  • How to fix permissions once and for all??

This seems to happen every fresh OS X install, about a week's worth of silly permissions problems, like the mac doesn't believe that you're allowed to put things in folders you created in Documents.
I made folder, then had to give read/write permissions, and now again. and again.
I would like to be done with this work-preventing nonsense and give this mac the order that yes, I am allowed to move things, put things into take things out of, my documents folder.
is resetting the ACLs the procedure for this?
    thanks

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    resetp
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • How to fix? finder problems - apps quitting - can't repair permissions?

I don't really know where to begin. I downloaded a software update the other day, but can't remember what it was, and am anyway unsure if that's related.
Suddenly, several programs have started not launching. They'll hang, act strangely if they open at all, and often not launch, period.
    And the problem is expanding.
I've done numerous hardware diagnostics, all coming back fine. I've defragged the disk.
I've attempted to verify and repair permissions, and every time, it hangs toward the end of the process, requiring a 'suicide'.
I live in Cambodia, so any solutions especially not requiring the purchase of software unavailable here (almost all of it) would be welcome, but any help in understanding the problem is appreciated.

If you have your installer disks then try this:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.0.6 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Defragging is unnecessary with Panther. Panther defrags automatically for files under 20 MBs in size. Furthermore, if you disk is damaged or corrupted in any way defraggin can worsen the problem to the point of having to erase and reinstall.
    I hope you maintain backups.

Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

What is the installed operating system and version (32-bit or 64-bit)?
Do you mean the volume slider from the taskbar or the one from the audio software/
The audio driver can be found on the driver and software download section of the web support portal for your notebook.  This is the page you seek. Use the dropdown to select the correct version of the installed operating system for your notebook. Right-click Computer and select properties to see which version is installed in your notebook.

    Beric

It would be helpful if you mentioned what kind of documents, what software you created them with, what the recipients are trying to open them with and on which platform. JPG files should be readable on any OS but if you're dealing with more than one page, getting the documents to work would be better.
