  • "Project or Library file is corrupt" when trying to open XControl

This is not a question, this is an account of my learning experience that I hope saves you from throwing your monitor through the wall.
When trying to open an XControl, I received the following error: "Project or Library file is corrupt"
Knowing Projects/Classes/XControls are all XML files, I opened the XControl using Notepad++ to see what was going on. The file structure is somewhat intuitive, and you'll be able to recognize many components of your library.
I used a binary search approach to find the offending XML by deleting all of the virtual folders, then seeing if the XControl would open. It did, meaning the headers of the XML were fine. Then I took the original file again, and deleted half the virtual folders to see if it would open, and it did not, meaning the offending XML was in a virtual folder I had not deleted that round. I took the original file, and deleted the other half of virtual folders, and it opened. I took the original file, and deleted only one virtual folder, and it opened. Aha! that virtual folder had only 5 items, and I knew one of the items must be the culprit.
Anyway, it only took about 10 minutes to narrow it down to an item that had a duplicate entry, two lines that were exactly the same:
After I deleted the duplicate item, the XControl opened up just fine! No data loss, no corruption.
How did the item get duplicated? Beats me. Could have been the product of a crash, some of my notorious renaming shenanigans, who knows.
    Lessons learned:
Version Control (Source Code Control) is a hero, as usual.
Try poking around with the XML if you get corrupt libraries - it may be an easy fix, but your mileage may vary.
Don't even think about #2 unless you have #1 "under control"
Action Item for Applications Engineer: could you point this error to the Owning Developer? I would suggest this type of an error fail more gracefully, or at least with more information. Possibly, this type of error could self-correct silently since it's so easy to diagnose? Watching the library tank due to a benign issue nearly cost me a monitor and a monitor-sized area worth of sheetrock damage.  (  )

  • ITunes library file is corrupt

    Hi All,
Today when I tried to open my iTunes library it kept crashing and I figured it its because the iTunes library file is corrupt. How do I repair it? Thanks!
FYI I just installed the most recent

    Hi,
In your itunes folder there is another folder called previous itunes libraries. You will be able to retieve the last library immediately before the recent up date.
Close itunes then you will need to move the iTunes Library.itl to trash. Move previous itl file to replace the one you moved to trash - you will need rename it to iTunes Library.itl.

  • Album art displays very slowly; iTunes library file is corrupted?

Since I have updated to the latest version of Leopard, my album art in the iTunes music folder displays at a snail's pace, where before it was fast as lightning. It appears my iTunes Library file is corrupted, because when I created a new iTunes library file, all my art work on my tracks displayed very fast, no slowdown at all. Also when I logged in as a different user, same thing. No problems with my album art being displayed. Is there a way of fixing a corrupted iTunes library file? I have a lot of music, videos and TV shows, all neatly arranged in various playlists I created. Just to do it over again would take me weeks. Also since I've been backing my internal drive using Time Machine, can I go back and retrieve my iTunes library file before it became corrupted? Thank you for any help you can give me.

You should be able to retieve your pre-corrupted library file from TM, provided the corruption didn't happen to far back.

  • How can I fix a (damaged) library file?

I just upgraded to itunes 5 last week. I opened itunes yesterday and it said my library file had been damaged so it renamed it with (damaged)and gave me a new library file without any of my custom playlists, etc... I lost a playlist thats really special to me, is there any way for me to repair my .xml library. I've tried renaming the (damaged) library to the regular library and itunes finds it and says its damaged... Also, I don't think all of the songs in my music folder are showing up. I own alot of CDs and it's going to be a huge pain to go through my 6400 songs and make sure every album is showing up in my .xml file..
Does anyone know a way to fix/debug my damaged .xml library?

    Liz hello,
    for your info....
What are the iTunes 4 library files?
The iTunes library is a database iTunes uses to organize your music. Two iTunes library files are created and maintained by iTunes for different purposes. They're both in the iTunes folder.
    iTunes 4. - 4.8
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes 4 Music Library
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml
    iTunes 4.9 - 5.x
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml
    iTunes 4 Music Library/iTunes Library
This file is a database of the songs in your library and the playlists you've created. Some song-specific data is saved in this file. If you delete the file, iTunes creates a new, empty copy when you open the application, but any playlists, song ratings, comments, or other information you created is lost. The iTunes 4 Music Library/iTunes Library file is only used by iTunes.
    iTunes Music Library.xml
This file contains some (but not all) of the same information stored in the iTunes 4 Music Library/iTunes Library files. The purpose of the iTunes Music Library.xml file is to make your music and playlists available to other applications on your computer. In Mac OS X other iLife applications (like iPhoto, iDVD, and iMovie) use this file to make it easier for you to add music from your iTunes library to your projects.

  • How To Fix: "The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."

I can't reopen my iTunes after I have to force quit when it does not respond. I get this message:
"The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."
I've read to do the solutions. I right clicked on both the iTunes and Music folder and went to info for each. On both the lock at the bottom of the Get Info was locked. All of my users including admin can read and write all files within those folders. They are even a shared folder. I clicked on the lock to unlock it, typed in my admin password, and went to the gear to apply to all files inside. After doing that I keep getting the saved message.
I tried another way that I've found online to move my ituneslibrary folder to the desktop and then open my iTunes. In theory the iTunes is supposed to ask for where the iTunes library is. Once that is prompted you quit iTunes and drag the iTunes Library folder back to the folder from the desktop and reopen iTunes to apprently solve the problem. However, when I move the iTunes Library file to the desktop and try to reopne iTunes the icon just keeps bouncing and when I right click the application does not respond.
This problem is only resolved if I restart/shut down my macbook pro which is a 15-inch Core 2 Duo with intel. It will be 5 years old in December. I currently have Lion and the latest iTunes 10.5. This problem started in late December.

If you hold down the option key when starting iTunes, it will allow you to select a library or create a new one.
You can create a new one, and then add all of your iTunes music back in by simply dragging the old iTunes music file onto iTunes.
There are more detailed instructions at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451#
It will show you how to re-build your iTunes database file.

  • Anyone know how to fix an "empty" JPEG file?

I'm fairly new to photo editing but I've been working on some photos recently that I started editing in iPhoto '09, and eight of the photos need a text caption added to them. I tried to export them to Photoshop to do this (iPhoto doesn't seem to be able to do that) and five of the photos opened perfectly. Three, however, would not open at all; Photoshop said it "could not complete your request because a JPEG marker segment length is too short (the file may be truncated or incomplete)." And when I try to open it in Preview, it says the file is "empty." This is clearly not the case because I can see the edited photos just fine in iPhoto, I just can't open it in any other application. All the photos are from the same camera and were taken and uploaded on the same day to the same program. I really have no clue how to fix this or why it happened; I guess I could just reimport the photos straight from the camera but it would lose all the edits I did so I'd like to avoid that. If anyone knows what to do to fix this, please answer asap! Thanks!

Try this application, http://www.lemkesoft.com/download.html  - Graphic Converter, and see if you can open it in there.

  • HT203175 how to fix a damaged library

i get a message that my library is damaged...help!!

How to recreate your iTunes library and playlists:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451
    Re-creating the iTunes Library file
Note: After re-creating your library, any devices that you sync with iTunes  (Apple TV, iPod, iPhone, iPad) will see your iTunes library as a new  library and will completely resync. The next sync with such a device will take longer and may reset some options since your rebuilt library isn't familiar to the device.
    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Locate your iTunes folder (this is the folder that contains the iTunes Library and iTunes Library.xml files).
    Operating System
    Default location of iTunes Folder
    Mac OS X
    /Users/[your username]/Music
    Microsoft Windows XP
    \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\
    Microsoft Windows Vista
    \Users\[your username]\Music\
    Microsoft Windows 7
    \Users\[your username]\My Music\
    3. Open your iTunes folder.
    4. Drag the "iTunes Library.xml" or "iTunes Music Library.xml" file to the Desktop. If neither is available, learn how to add files back to the Library (because the XML file is not available, playlists and other information will not be available).
    5. Drag the following file from your iTunes folder to the Trash:
    Mac OS X
    "iTunes Library" or "iTunes Library.itl"
    Microsoft Windows
    "iTunes Library.itl"
    6. Open iTunes.
Important: Do not add any content into iTunes at this point (such as by purchasing something from the iTunes Store).
    7. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.
    8. Navigate to the "iTunes Library.xml" file on the Desktop.
    Mac users: Click Choose.
    Windows users: Click Open.
If your Podcasts list in iTunes is empty after following these steps, learn how to add them back into iTunes.

  • Aperture 3 Exporting Projects / Individual Library Files?

So my typical backup procedure in Ap2 and below was to export project files and back those up on two external hard drives. I do not use reference files, but rather let everything import into the aperture library file.
    so. . .
Now in Aperture 3 I go to backup a project and there's no option anymore to export projects, only "Libraries". I've always considered a "Library" to be the entirety of the files stored in Aperture, but this is something new. . . Is exporting these smaller Library files from Ap3 the same as exporting project files from Ap2? The file size of the exported "library" file seems consistent with the size of the project.
I haven't tried re-importing any of these new exported library files, but should I assume that these things will behave the same way as projects did in previous versions? i.e., is this still a viable backup methodology?
If not I'd hate to have to just export masters and lose all the metadata/adjustments I rely on aperture for.
    Thanks,
    msg

The line between libraries and projects has just been blurred a little giving the user more flexibility. Now you can open the exported project as a stand alone library or import it to another library as a project. (note that the "Import Project" command is now "Import Project/Library") IMHO your back up plan just got better.

  • How to compact iTunes music library files

I've been using iTunes for several years, and my iTunes Music Library has grown substantially. Still, with just over 22,000 tracks, it seems that the two library files (iTunes Music Library.XML and iTunes Library.ITL) are inordinately large. Those two files are taking 53MB on my hard drive. Which means that each individual track is taking almost 2.5KB of data! I'm not sure, but that seems like an awful lot of information, just to "catalog" the music tracks.
Is it possible that the library files need to be "cleaned" and/or compacted? Is there a method to use, to compact these two files? Or does 53MB sound like a reasonable size for these two files?
    Dell Inspiron 9200   Windows XP

    Hi Frank,
You can delete these files, and upon reopening of itunes, they will be recreated fresh and new. However, you will lose song ratings, playlists, playcounts and possibly other information you have diligently passed to iTunes over the years, and you will have to re-add your music...
It might be fun to save backup copies and then "refresh" the files to see how big they are...but I have around 2400 songs, and my files are close to 4MB. So 10x sounds about right.

  • How do I share itunes library files using an external drive?

I can't find the exact answer I am looking for.
I have an XP Machine and a Mac. I have a shared external USB drive with all of my music files on it. The files are accessed by itunes on both machines as needed. I do not have both networked, so Home Sharing is not an option, it also is something I am not interested in doing in this particular case.
Here is my problem, if I add a song on my Mac, it does not show up on my PC and visa versa. The other problem is that it does the play count, playlist updates etc. on only one machine.
So my question is this. Is there any way that I can have itunes use only one library file no matter which machine is operating? In other words, if I add a song while on the PC, I want it to show up on my Mac library. If I want to change a playlist on my PC it will be changed on the Mac when I get on.
    Can anyone answer this one?

  • How do I get the library file name for a linked icon?

    Hello,
    Using AW 7.02
I have a couple of library files, one contains graphics, the
other audio. I am using a dive routine to run through the icons in
the a7p file and if it is a sound icon that is "linked", I want to
make sure that it is linked to the audio library file.
What I am having a problem with is obtaining the linked
    filename.
Is there an icon property that contains the linked info? I
believe that there is, as when I right click on a sound icon which
is linked to a library file, I noticed that I could select Library
Links... from the pop up menu, and I found the following data:
    Library Link Name:1.3.1s
    Linked To:1.3.1s
    In Library:lessonAudio.a7l <<<----This is what I am
interested in getting (if it is lessonGraphics.a7l then I want to
    warn the developer)
A little test that I did with one audio icon in the flow line
just prior to the calc contents below:
    T_Str := GetIconContents(IconPrev(IconID)) --
    produced:[[#type:#linkedIcon, #iconID:262168]]
    if T_Str[1, #type] = #linkedIcon then
    T_Str1 := GetIconContents(T_Str[1,#iconID]) --
    produced:[[#type:#sound, #filename:"", #storage:#internal,
    #format:"MP3"]]
    else
    T_Str1 := "Otherwise, something else."
    end if
#filename above appears not to be the place to look as it may
contain the actual pathname to the mp3 file, IF that info is still
    available.
FYI, The audio in the library file is NOT linked externally.
    Thanks
    Mike

You can figure this out mathematically. ((Library number + 1)
    * 65536) + 7
will be the first icon number in the library. You can also
    use
GetLibraryInfo which gives you information on the libraries
    including the
root icon of each. So your icon 262168 will be in the 3rd
    library returned
    from GetLibraryInfo()
