How to fix slow Safari

My early 2009 IMac has slowed greatly. I tried a different web browser (FireFox) and it is super fast. What do I need to do to fix Safari?

What version of Safari are you using? Take a look at this link, http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser's-Cache#Safari_for_Mac_OS_X

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Quit and relaunch Mail, and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Thanks, I fixed slow Safari 5

Yesterday, I downloaded OS 10.6.4 (as background, the automatic download froze, so I rebooted, and downloaded from the Apple website. When the Imac tried to open, I got a blue screen that would occasionally flash, but rebooted a few more times, and eventually got to my desktop. Then when I tried Safari, it was incredibly slow. This morning, I called my ISP provider, who ran a speed test, which indicated everything was fine). I managed to get to this forum, and saw lots of people having similar issues.
In any event, just wanted to report that, thanks to the forum, I think I fixed Safari 5. The main fix was to add DNS codes to network preferences. Someone had posted a link to Google's Namebench, and I downloaded that. It showed me the fastest DNS codes to enter. I did that, and Safari was/is blazing fast. I also tried Carolyn Samit's/Bee's suggestion of running repair disk permissions, and that helped too, as did resetting Safari.
Wish I had specific links to these helpful suggestions, but they are in several of the most recent posts. Thanks to everyone.

Yes, I noticed this problem as soon as I upgraded to v5. Reinstalled v4.05 and it works great - I got my Safari back again. I followed this procedure and it worked flawlessly:

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • How I "Fixed" Slow 7.1 DSL

    Search for DSL Tweaking Utilities:
    http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
    Download: TCPOptimizer.exe
    http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp
    Download: DRTCP.exe
    Run Tweak Tester Tool: http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
Java Tweak Tool. When pressing Results - give service / speed / operating system / connection type, and a report is generated of ideal connections. I read how the most important tweak is the size of the TCP Receive window. And that multiples of 1452 determine the size. For DSL 7.1, the report gave me a huge number. Dividing this by 1452 I got 720. I increased the number to 1452000 and used the speedtest.com ping test to ensure no data packets were lost.
    Pingtest: www.pingtest.net
    My results: http://www.speedtest.net/result/1197722521.png

Dr.TCP won't work on Windows Vista or 7 due to the changed TCP/IP stack and since both OSs auto-tune themselves on the fly, though Windows XP and older will require tweaking to handle anything faster than 3Mbps out of the box, really. It is useful information to put out there though.

  • How to fix slow startup times on a macbook air

Before upgrading to Moutain Lion my MacBook Air booted up to the desktop in less than 30 seconds. Now with Mountain Lion it takes 1 minute and 30 seconds to get to the desktop. What can I do to get the startup time back to the way it was before upgrading?

I had already checked and tried numerous "google" searches without any successbefore coming here. If you can't give a response without being sarcastic then don't bother replying.
Wow! Are you thin-skinned. My comment wasn't, as you say, sarcastic. I never assume anything not explicitly stated or implied. If you've visited these forums for any length of time, you'd know how many don't do the obvious things, but expect responders to be clairvoyant. If none of those hits solved your issue, I'm out of ideas, since the global and app-specific defaults changes work here. Good luck and have a happy holiday weekend (US-only).

  • I would like to know how to fix my safari. There are many pages that the text and links appear as "AAAAAAA" and I dont know where to click or what to do

Please if anyone knows how to solve this problem, I bought this mac brand new, first time using it and many pages dont render the texts or links. It shows it like a series of "A"s.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • How to fix slow Pages on iPad2?

I use Pages on iPad 2 for work and have many folders and documents (about 23MB [15 folders and hundreds of documents] ~ still have about 3GB left on 16Gb iPad2). Often, Pages freezes or takes a very long time to close document. When it freezes, I can fix by closing to homescreen and closing Pages in multitask bar but problem returns. I've tried restarting iPad.
Is there a way to avoid this? Am I missing something or doing something wrong?
    Thanks,
    N.

iDVD now takes over two minutes to load!
If I use another account, it's fine. So what is causing the problem? I don't want to keep wasing time making new user accounts when something breaks - which seems to be quite often with iMovie and iDVD.
After reading threads from people who are having the same problem, I've too have run OnyZ to clean my System Cashes and Kernal Cashes, repaired permissions, moved preference files and more. So, is there any more to try?

    Hi Kevin:
The best source i know for iDVD questions is Ken Tidwell and he says
"If iDVD seems terribly sluggish, and/or takes a long time to open, rebuild your iPhoto database. Hold down the Option & Shift keys while starting iPhoto and follow the dialogs - note it can take quite a long time if you have many (1000's) of images."

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
