How to flash MSI 6970 Lightning

Hi,
I recently contacted msi support about a performance bios issue with my MSI 6970 lightning.  They emailed me 3 files, an atiflash file, and atiflash application file, and the update bios.bin file.  They also e-mailed me directions but they're in japanese.  Can anyone clarify what I need to do in order to re-flash my MSI 6970 ATI Lightning card?  THanks!

No the card runs @ 940mhz core clock, the issue I was having was when I set the card profile to performance from silent the display wouldn't work.  They sent me the updated bios to fix this issue but the directions are in japanese and when I translated them via google I didn't understand what they were saying to do.
***EDIT  After some google research I think I have the basic idea... please let me know if i'm correct.
Step 1: Create a bootable MS-DOS Drive(Either CD or USB)
Step 2: Unzip the ATI Flash files and updated bios to the drive
Step 3: Reboot, go to bios, set the MS DOS drive to boot priority 1
Step 4: In DOS command type "atiflash -p 0 biosname.rom"  In my case it would "atiflash -p 0 TV237MS.102"
The bios update they sent me ends with .102 instead of .rom.. that an issue?

  • MSI 6970 Lightning - artifacts issue

    Hello,
Yesterday I received my MSI 6970 Lightning and today I installed a few games to try and see how it performs.
Everything works as expected until you start stressing it with some of the newer, heavier games and/or benchmarks.
I took some pictures to show what I mean that you can view at:
    http://dev.nixit.nl/artifacts/
It's running at default speeds and I tried the latest drivers from MSI as well as the latest official AMD/ATI drivers and v12.1
Other information that may be relevant:
    motherboard: evga x58 sli
    PSU: 1000w cooler master
    ram: 12gb ocz ddr3 1600
hdds: 2x74gb raptors (heh, oldies I know), 2x750
Any ideas? I mean, I know that I can probably downclock it but come on it should run at its advertised speeds at least, right?
Is this a known issue? If any other information is required to solve this please do ask I'll be here checking for updates!
    Thanks in advance

You should read this thread and specifically regarding the switches on the back of the card. https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=150708.0
These are the switches that should ONLY be operated by professional overclockers under controlled circumstances.
Mainly because these switches remove precautionary measures from graphics cards to allow them to deliver the highest levels of performance.
These switches can be found on the back and the side of the card and have several functions:
    Quote
BIOS Switch, run with the normal Lightning BIOS or a special sub-zero version
Please check this switch, i.e. the position its in. Ensure  that it is in the "Normal position".
Then the following switches are best left alone, but just check.
    Quote
    Xtreme Cool :
Removes coldbug (boot at sub-zero temperatures!) on N580GTX Lightning
Increases the AMD Powertune limit by 250% on R6970 Lightning
    Quote
    Increase Memory and GPU Voltages
    PWM clock tuning:
Increases the PWM frequency from 260 to 310 MHz on the N580GTX Lightning
Increases the PWM frequency from 300 to 350 MHz on the R6970 Lightning
    Increase PLL voltage
Remove Overcurrent Protection (warning, this WILL burn your card easily if you're not careful!)

  • How to Flash MSI bios - x99s gaming 7

using live update through windows - big NO NO as far as i understand.
downloading the Bios update file from MSI site - http://www.msi.com/support/mb/X99S-GAMING-7.html#down-bios
unpacking it and trying to run from dos mode from within windows (/CMD) - doesn't work.
it says not compatible with system (Probebly the 64bit windows).
trying through BIOS, M-flash, asks to be pointed to a USB key.
i tried extracting the BIOS update package from (http://www.msi.com/support/mb/X99S-GAMING-7.html#down-bios) to the USB key.
then back to bios, M-flash, pointed out to the USB key, chose the BIOS file "*.H40"- but then it says i don't have a file named - "ME" something.
so... how exactly one suppose to flash the bios ?
    cheers.

You are now on thin ice vmanuelgm. This thread is not your personel "vmanuelgm is correct" thread but a tech support thread and support for the OP (not you) is offered.
The forum method is the safest way there is and also safer than MFlash that will at least only update ME as well if that is manually selected what is not required using the provided archive. I will not discuss with you about experience in flashing but you should maybe consider that I have quite some knowledge in that regard.
Secondly you were not partially but fully wrong as you didn't say h42 is there but you said h42 would be the latest. Anyway nobody asked for a beta so OP can consider it if he is not happy with the latest official as this is no beta thread like I also already said.
If this will continue off-topic in any way I will clean sweep this thread from reply #4 on.
You should contact MSI to post your MSI HQ as first flash option in manuals, and getting it burned in DVD roms along with mobos...
Until then, MSI official flash methods are what you know, and MSI HQ is not between them...
I am not on any ice, not posting anymore here, with such genious and democratic moderators...
    Bye...

  • How to flash MSI X58 Platinum to 1.1 since its a 4MB image and too big for 1.44?

    Guys
I do not have a floppy drive, and have been using a 4GB flash disk that has a DOS 6.0 image on it that I downloaded from allbootdisks.
This image is only 1.4MB so I dont have enough room for the 4MB 1.1 Bios update for my X58 Platinum.
I spent 3 hours trying to figure out a way to do this, to no avail - and I hear the M-Flash is broken on 1.0.
Unfortunately I cant access my CD-ROM either to try and load the flash from there once booted.
Does anyone know how I can flash to 1.1? Am I missing something?
    Thanks a lot!

well you should have plenty of room if its 4GB and youve only used 1.4mb
    this should help you https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108079.0

and i want to update to bios version: 015.042.000.000.003435
After doing everything correctly USB bootable drive and put all the files on USB drive. After runing it and typing
atiflash -f -p 0 MSI.R9280X.3072.131204.rom  (which is the correct name for the file)
I got message: File not found MSI.R9280X.3072.131204.rom

After pressing 1 to continue i have an option to retype agean.

flashing just some random vbios can brick your card
if you want to check for possible updates
tell S/N of your card [you can skip the last 3 digits from it]
and save and upload somewhere you current vbios and give a link to it

  • MSI 6970 Lightning-Bouncing GPU Core clock in GPU-Z under load

    Hi,
When doing some stress testing with furmark, I noticed the GPU Core Clock would bounce around between 600mhz-940mhz under 99% GPU Load.  Is this normal??  I figured it would hold steady at 940mhz under load, not really sure why it's bouncing around.
    Thanks!

Figured it out.. had to change the Power Control settings in CCC to +20%... maintains 940MHZ now

    How to Flash MSI Guides.
There are different ways to flash the bios but to keep things simple will concentrate on the MSI Official methods :-
    1) Award Flash BIOS Procedure 98/ME
This method assumes access to hd formatted using FAT32 & therefore readable by DOS.
    2) Flashing the BIOS for Users using NON FAT file system
For use with Linux based & NTFS File systems - HD Not readable from DOS.  Using this procedure the  the files are copied to the virtual drive before running the flash utility. So the flash effectively is all done in memory.
This will be the method used by the majority of us. So:-
Follow the instructions in the last link (Thanks Bas)
The details below are additional checks/notes referring to the steps in Bas's guide, which may be useful.
    Essential
    2) Know Your model number  - Is of increased Importance for NEO4 users - We have already seen instances of this.
5-1) Ensure you have a Boot Floppy with CD suport (this creates the Virtual drive used in the process) If you haven't got such
a boot disc see BootrDisc.com link in Rescources.
5-2) B4 booting floppy - Enter Bios & Load Optimised Defaults - To ensure that bios is returned to stock & any overclocking is
    turned off.
    7) If you miss the ramdrive letter the last DOS message will show your CD drive letter. The Ramdrive is the letter preceeding
the CD Drive. EG CD = D Ramdrive = C
Optional - Gives better control of procedure
    11) Use of Switch command options with AWFL833C.EXE /py/sn/wb/cc/cd/cp/r TargetBios.file
Personnaly I use the switches as does Syar :-
    Per Syar2003 Iv'e always used :
    AWFL833D W7030NMS.xxx /py/sn/wb/cc/cd/cp/r
    or
    AWFL833D W7030NMS.xxx /py/sn/wb/cc/cd/cp/f/r
And a hard reset with jumper when done .
For a more detailed explanation of switches see :-
    Syar's Bios Switch Explained
    or Syar's Bios Collection - Flashing.txt
See Also Using a Batch File to Automate bios flash
    12) after flash , enter Bios & load optimized defaults , then save + exit with no other change .
That way you have a fresh system with a fresh non problematic dmi-pool and user settings .
After this Enter Bios & Re-enter your custom settings.
From Syar - Which one do I do first?
Thanks to Bas & Syar for the majority of info in this guide

    FLASH PREPARATION
Always Load Optimised defaults & Save b4 flashing - NEVER FLASH When running an OC or Unstable.
If you need to flash & are worried about stability - run with a single module & test it it memtest 1st.
    FLASH METHODS
    1) Winflash (Syar2003) -
Winflash is safe to use if your windows and pc is stable .
How to get it Download & install MSI Live Update. Winflash is located "C:\Program Files\MSI\Live Update 3\FlashUty\Award
And as with dos flash reset bios and any overclocking to "load optimized bios default" + save, before and after flashing.
After winflash is finished it ask if you want to reboot - answer no , and shutdown (turn off) windows/pc instead .
After that disconnect the PSU's AC and reset the cmos with the jumper on the board .
This is how I use it , - safest way .
Note ! Place checkmarks on bootblock / dmi area /update all /reset cmos

  • MSI ATI Radeon HD 6970 Lightning Issues

    Hi all,
Back in May I upgraded my 4870's in crossfire to a 6970 lightning, and I have been having some issues since then, but I'm not sure if its down to a dodgy card, or driver issues, and wanted to sound them out before I do anything.
    The issues currently are -
Actual navigation around Vista is fine. No issues with video playback. Only graphical quirk is in Zune Marketplace, which occasionally has the odd line which seems to streak away from album pictures.
In games, the line streaking is much worse, and makes them somewhat unplayable. Dragon Age 2, Witcher 2 and Global Agenda, all have the problem. Not sure if streaking or tearing is the correct term really. I'm about half way through Dragon Age 2, and in the mansion house, the streaks radiate away from the characters and most animated objects, the fireplace for example. Haven't started Witcher 2, but this is the same in the tent at the very start, there is also speckles, or purplish dots on dark objects. The same issues occur in Global Agenda, but on a much worse scale. In game video's are fine however.
Also, in Rift, an odd speckling of pink/purple dots on certain terrain. No big deal, certainly not a game ruiner, was barely noticeable.
    No crashes at all however...
I have tried cleaning drivers on several occasions and attempted to run the cards using the latest ATI drivers, as well as the drivers that came with the card, and also the drivers listed on the product webpage. I have tried the card with both bios settings, have removed and reseated the card, but nothing improves.
I have discussed this on the forum of the company that I bought the card, and the general consensus is that its a dodgy card and I should RMA. I wanted to try here before I go down that route, as I really would prefer a working card than having to go down the RMA route, which would be a last resort.
    Thanks!
    Added system details:

    Western Digital VelociRaptor 150GB 16MB
    750W Seasonic S12D-750 ATX2.3 Power Supply
A Sony blue ray player of some description and also a sony dvd rewriter.

Yes to driver sweeper, both with MSI drivers and latest ATI drivers.
Happens in all games I have on the computer, Metro 2033 does not load at all however.
I have tried with both default clock speeds, and also underclocked, I believe default is 940/1375, I have tried at these speeds, and also underclocked at 900/1325.
I also tried uninstalling all drivers, installing drivers for one of the 4870's I used in crossfire and trying that, and it allowed me to play the games with no issues.
I don't have another PC that would fit the card, so can't try it in another pc.
Only pictures I have access to are small and don't really show the issue, I will try to provide better ones tonight.

no he whants to flash it, but what are the exact commands to use when he is in dos.
please do not say return it to the shop, because it takes 8 weeks to get a card back, and the shop says oke flash it, but HOW

    Use the attached
Decompress the provided .rar archive with Winrar: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
TV278MH.170 is normal vbios and TV278MH.180 is LN2.
Create a bootable usb stick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0).
Then unpack the previously provided archive (170_180.rar) and put the included file (TV278MH.170 or TV278MH.180) on that stick.
Rename TV278MH.170 / TV278MH.180 to 170.rom / 180.rom. Put the atiflash.exe also included in the archive on the USB stick too. Now boot from the stick.
Type atiflash -p -f -noaper 0 170.rom (or 180.rom) [ENTER] and let it flash the vbios.
If still no help remove current drivers in safemode using >>Driver Fusion<< and install latest AMD drivers after reboot.
oke we tried it, we used the 180, now the core clock says 1050 no succes

  • Problems with msi r6970 lightning

Hey guys I am having big issues with my 6970 lightning. Ok first I got this card to replace a second sapphire 6970 that I was running in xfire with another sapphire 6970. I since gave one of the sapphires to a relative. When I first got the lightning all went smooth benched it in a single card config then added my other sapphire 6970. No issues. Out of nowhere things rapidly went downhill. I first received a crash in grfs as I loaded shattered mountain. Froze with a sound loop then the screen turned black with a continued sound loop that eventually stopped. Reset the machine figuring it was the OC. On the lighting I had it set as 985/1400 fan 80% voltage @ 1.300 vlts. Prior to the crash I used a combo of heaven 3.0, kombustor and 3dmark 11 all passed numerous loops without issues. Again thinking it was the oc I down clocked to stock then fired up grfs multiplayer which crashed n froze on the main menu. I then  ran heaven and after 10 min a solid black screen that eventually recovered throwing a display driver has stopped responding but has recovered. Now I knew something was up.
I then ran kombustor same issues black screens sometimes a 8bit Nintendo looking screen when u need to blow in the cartridge. After countless hours of stress testing my CPU with prime, memtest, and Intel burn, I ruled out my other hardware as being the cause. I ran 2 hours of prime, Intel burn passed the maximum stress test, memtest passed until about 500% on each iteration (7 to be exact) windows version. This both with my OC and at stock. Here's for the finale I have a second machine (ill include both machines at the bottom of this post) I installed the lightening in the second rig not one single issue no black screen, no 8bit Nintendo crashes nada. Again I've tried every fix known to no prevail. Reinstalled drivers 12.10 rolled back to 12.8 used driver fusion to clear out the old remnants, swapping cards and systems. The lightning ran flawless in the old rig for hours. Now the sapphire card runs all the gpu stress tests I've tried flawlessly in the main rig at stock and OC. so I assumed the lightning was dying. But I tried the lightning in my second AMD pc (with a MSI mobo coincidentally) and it ran heaven,  kombuster, and games without a single crash.
The only option I didn't try was taking the PSU out of the main pc and using it in the older pc to rule out the psu. But that still don't explain why the sapphire card works perfectly in the main rig and not the lightning. The second fix I didn't try was updating the mobo bios I'm using the f3 gigabyte has up to the f6 but I never had issues b4 and my sapphire 6970 and when I had two in xfire, ran perfect in the main pc with stock and oc settings, with the current PSU and bios. Food for though, gpu temps  sapphire 45c to 50c idle 75c to 80c load. Lightning 41c idle 70c to 74c load. Right where they need to be. Another thing to add I originally had a gigabyte Odin 1200 PSU that got ... Well let's say replaced (garbage of a PSU) the HX750 meets AMD requirements for xfire 6970s this almost rules out everything except BIOS or worst case the lightning just ain't compatible with the gigabyte mobo. Any ideas how to get this card to work after all the testing I know its not defective. Sry for the long post.

I also use cpuid hwmonitor to check temps n volts 12 vlt rail is at 12.05 during load. The gpu load temps on the lightning nvr exceed 72c at stock and 76c with the oc. Should I get a new mobo? Compatibility issue? I was looking at a asrock 990fx extreme 3 as this would allow me to upgrade my CPU later if I choose. I am on my current main pc bc bulldozer didn't grab me. Some benches r less than the x6s, my two 6970s perform btr than a single 7970 for my needs and the only increase I would see is if I got two 7970s that's way to much coin n would be bottlenecked by my current CPU I'm sure. Any ideas? I'm at a loss

  • How to flash vBIOS GX60 Destroyer

I have a problem with my gx60 and I think it's a VBios bug, also I found the MSI tutorial to flash the vbios with DOS but when I try to execute the fvbios.bat, it says atiflash.exe -p 0 -f wrong command or file, and if I try to execute atiflash.exe it shows me the commands and options of that exe, so I couldn't flash the vBios.
So if someone knows how to flash the vBios please help.

There are few others talk about once they update the vbios, the memory clock is downclocking from 1250 to 900, so I think you shouldn't update your vbios since the problem doesn't really related to the vbios.

Could we perhaps pull our heads togheter and write a detailed guide on these three topics, taking into account how to do it on the most used (commonly written about) MSI boards? and perhaps put as a sticky?
It would help many novice users trying to deal with these problems. I am willing to write on the subject of flashing bios on the MSI K8N SLI Platinum and how to install a Bios Saviour.

BIOS Guides pretty complete as far as Neo3 250/Ultra but as none of the pps who have been involved in the stickies have neo4's that chipset is lacking.

If any1 wants to re-write /update these please feel free to write up the topic as a new thread  thread & if popular we can add a link to the thread.
