How to force a Mail account to use IMAP instead of POP?

I'm trying to setup a new mail account on my wife's iPhone 3G (4.2.1) and after putting in the in initial info (name, e-mail address, password), Mail picks up the POP server information (which is valid), but I don't want to use POP, I want to use IMAP. I know that the account supports IMAP as it's configured and working in Outlook. Changing the incoming server from pop.netcabo.pt to imap.netcabo.pt (which I know is the correct server) does nothing, it still functions as a POP server.
I know that in some cases a big IMAP/POP selection button appears at the top of the mail configuration screen but in this case it doesn't. There appears to be no way to force iPhone Mail to use IMAP.
The only way I know to get around this, which is a pain in the ***, is to configure the account as IMAP in OS X Mail and then sync the account to the iPhone, but I don't want to go there if I don't have to.

If your having problems getting your Apple Mail or Mac Mail to sync across your devices, I thought this might be helpful.  It could be because you have your email accounts set up with POP rather than IMAP configuration.  Try this solution.
I had set up my gmail account a long time ago (5 years) before I know the differnce between POP and IMAP.  IMAP allows you to sync across devices... POP is OLD SCHOOL technology of the 90's.  Now that I know better, and have more than one device I want to sync, so I want to change the settings in mac mail to convert the gmail emails from a POP account type to an IMAP accont type, but I cannot afford to loose all of my previous emails that I'd saved (100's of them), which is what will happend if you delete this account to start anew.
Odly, even after I set up the email as IMAP in gmail, it still did not update the account type in Apple Mail.  Apparently this has to be done from scratch.
!.WARNING, BEFORE PROCEDING THROUGHT THE FOLLOWING, BACK UP YOUR  MAC.!
What worked for me was actually rather simple, but to be safe BACK UP.
Note:  It did dissassociate all of my "Signatures" but did not erase them from my email acconts (I have 14 email accounts with google apps).  Your exprience could be different, so please ba safe and back up.
1) First I dissabled the existing email account in my Apple Mail program.
2) Then recreated the account from scratch as an IMAP.*
* Be sure to change the account to an IMAP in  gmail first (Click the Gear on the right > Settings > Forwarding & POP IMAP > Disable POP then Enable IMAP
***Deactivating took the account out of view (hidden) but retained all of the saved emails from the past.  At the same time it allowed me to recreate the account in Apple Mail from scratch and it auto pulled up the IMAP configuration, with the same gmail account I was using before set up as POP. ***
Now I'm left with the best of both worlds and all syncs perfectly.
Just don't forget and accidentally delete the inactive account, or you will lose ALL of the emails you saved during the time when the old POP email account was active.
Good Luck!

  • Apple Mail accounts defaulting to IMAP instead of POP

My ISP (Cox) tells me they support both IMAP and POP.  With my old eMac (PPC 10.5.8), Apple Mail was working fine with POP.  However, when I set up my new Mac Mini (10.10.3), the account setup defaults to IMAP and doesn't allow me to change this to POP.  I was involved in this discussion :
OS X 10.10.3 Apple Mail: 'Remove copy from server after retrieving a message' is no longer an option?
However, unlike the OP, in my case after pressing the "Create" button, no second display came up, i.e. Yosemite automatically configured the account as IMAP and that was that.
Anyone have any ideas how I can either edit the new accounts or add a new account so that it uses POP instead of IMAP in Apple Mail?

You may have to use Add Other Account from the bottom of the email provider list in Internet Accounts.
So, if this doesn't work for the listed providers, try it with Add Other Account.
When you get to the screen where you put in the email address and password, hold down the Option key and the Create button will change to Next. Press that and you can manually configure the account.

In Mail>Preferences>Accounts tab>Account Information tab - from the 'Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):' drop-down menu select 'Edit SMTP Server List...', choose the server you want to edit from those listed, click on the Advanced tab. Does that give you the option you're after?

  • What is the best mail account to use with Apple Mail?

Hi All, I am a recent convert to Mac from a PC and I am on a sharp learning curve. At present I am trying to use mail on Leapord. I have a Googlemail account which I have tried linking to Apple mail but I seem to get the same issue many others have with send e-mails. What is more, googlmail's All Mail facility is doing my nut in at the moment.
Therefore I was wondering what is the best mail account to use with Apple Mail? I only have a Mackbook and an i-pod nano so subscribing to mobile me at £58/yr just to get the @mac.com account (which I assume would be perfect) seems a little extreme for me.
Are their any other account that work correctly and don't have this All Mail option.
    Thanking you in advance.
    Matthew

    Hi,
    I have 2 issues.
    1) I have mail 3.6 and when I set up the mail account via IMAP and STMP I recieve mails ok, but I can not send them. If I do I get the following window pop up.
"can not send message using smtp.googlemail.com server" it tells me my address was rejected by the server.
    2) I have 2500 e-mails in my All Mails folder on googlemail. Nearly all of these I delete from my inbox years ago (my bad mailbox management). Google seems to store all my mails. I want to delete these permentaly as they also get downloaded into Apple Mail.
    Hope you can help.

  • How to change e-mail address in iCloud IMAP

how to change e-mail address in iCloud IMAP. i have to change it to another e-mail address.
    please help
    please find in image.

Welcome to the Apple community usama.butt.
Unfortunately you cannot change an iCloud mail address once you have created it. You can however use an iCloud alias which you can set up at iCloud.com.
    To create an alias.....
Navigate to the Mail feature at iCloud.com and click on the gear icon in the bottom left corner. Choose Preferences from the drop down menu, then select accounts from the options across the top, here you can create your alias.

  • I have a gmail pop accnt and a tbird pop accnt. how to synchronize them? must I use IMAP?

I have had Tbird for over a decade, and have used gmail as only a place to store copies of messages that I receive in my tbird application. I have it set up so that whatever emails are received in tbird will also be received in gmail. Both accounts are POP accounts.
    1) what would be the advantage of changing to IMAP accounts?
    2) how can I take the emails in the folders in Tbird and copy them over to similar named folders in Gmail?

Slightly confused - you mention you have two accounts:
a pop gmail and a pop tbird
however, what do you mean by pop tbird?
Thunderbird email client is not a server and does not issue email addresses. So you must have another email address on a different server.
    '''Pop mail accounts:'''
You can have both pop mail accounts incoming to their own mail accounts and using their own Inbox.
you can also set up Pop mail accounts to use a Global Inbox in Local folders account, so they use only one Inbox in thunderbird.
All emails can be stored on computer in Thunderbird profile folders.
You can select to leave on server or remove upon download or keep on server for a specific period or remove when you delete an email.
Pop mail accounts are useful if you only operate from the one computer.
As emails are stored in Profile you can view them in online or offline mode.
If moving about using different computers or devices, you can access mail via Webmail or need to make sure that Pop mail accounts leave messages on the server in order to download to separate devices. Sent emails cannot be seen by differnent devices as they are only on the computer that sent them.
You could use a portable version of Thunderbird to overcome this issue, but you may find an issue with Profile size if there is a lot of mails.
'''IMAP mail acounts see a remote view of the server.'''
You subscribe to see folders and email headers are downloaded. when you select an email, Thunderbird downloads to a temp cache to facilate quicker access, but emails are not stored in Thunderbird, they are only stored on server. You cannot dowload to see emails if in offline view.
You can synchronise subscribed folders to get a copy of the server folder in a mbox file in your Thunderbird mail account. Very useful for offline viewing.
Anything you do in an Imap account will be reflected in the server folders. So if you delete an email in Thunderbird or via webmail, the folders are synchronised to show same. They are one and the same folders.
As with Pop, you can move emails into Local Folders, these emails will be stored in mbox files in your Profile and are not efected by the server. If needed, these emails can be deleted off the server and still have a copy in Local Folders.
IMAP mail accounts cannot use a Global Folder.
IMAP mail accounts are good if you use different computers or use eg: a phone and want access to the same information.
Whatever method you use, both email addresses set up to use their own mail account can be seen symultaneously in the same Profile in Thunderbird, so you do not have to forward emails to other accounts, that is your choice.
Backups are still inportant regardless of Pop or IMAP.

  • Mail.app is COPYING instead of MOVING mail to folders (using IMAP)

    Hi there,
I hope I can keep this simple, I'll go by the steps leading to my propblem:
    1.
I've been using POP3 mail for a long time, mainly with Outlook on PC's and now that I have made the godly switch to Apple I've been using Mail.app for a couple months. I host my domains at GoDaddy.com and they offer decent mail servers including webmail, etc. Since I'm checking mail on multiple platforms (iPhone, iPad, MacBook and webmail) I decided to start using IMAP instead of POP3. GoDaddy set that up form me in seconds and I got IMAP working on Mail.app in no time (yes, I deleted the old POP accounts and started from zero creating new IMAP accounts).
    2.
I've learned to keep mail filing easy so I have just two folders: "Inbox" and "archive". My inbox is... well... my inbox. If a mail is in my inbox it's because it's either a brand new unread mail or it is read and I'm keeping it there because action needs to be take upon it. Once action has been taken and I want to save the mail for future reference I just archive it.  If I want to retreive mail I just make a search across all folders. Of course I also have the trash folder, sent items, junk, etc.
    3. THE PROBLEM
As seen on the subject line, Mail.app is COPYING instead of MOVING mail to the IMAP server based folders. So when I click on archive, or manualy drag a mail to the "archive" folder it places a copy there but the email is still visible in the inbox on all my devices. I have tried creating other IMAP folders and giving them different names such as "saved mail" or "old mail" and still I get the same problem. To prove the problem is on the Mail.app side I loged into my webmail and moved messages to the "archive" folder from there, and guess what... it worked. The messages did not show up in the inbox of any of my devices any more.
PLEASE PLEASE HELP.... I'm talking about three email addresses which receive tons of business related mail every day... I'm flooded in mail.
THANKS in advance for your help!
    Kinds regards,
    Willem

    Thanks wjosten,
I had already tried that. I even created a keyboard shortcut to do so. It doesn't work! As soon as I close down Mail.app and start it up again, the messages are back in the inbox.

  • I would like to change my POP mail account to an IMAP account but Maverick is making it difficult. Anyone have any ideas?

I would like to change my POP mail account to an IMAP account but Maverick is making it difficult. Anyone have any ideas?

I have tried to create a new account but the latest version of Mac Mail attempts to help you. Since I already have a POP account with my carrier, each time I try to create a new account mail assumes I want a new POP account and creates that type of account. It does not give me the opportunity to input the options I want.

I have just downloaded an alternative keyboard (Fast Keyboard).
How do I get my Ipad2 to use it instead of the default keyboard, please?
    Thanks for your help

    First, please don't shout.
    Second, don't post personal information.
Third, restore, if iTunes will let you.  Everything except the password will be restored.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  Be forewarned that it takes a long time.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

iCloud email addresses can't be changed or deleted, but you can set up an alias namethat he can use which will be linked to his current iCloud account and will receive email in the existing iCould inbox.  This guide explains how: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2622.

  • How to force apple mail to use my default address

    Hi,
I have three email addresses set up in Mail.
I want to switch to only one, and to continue to receive emails from the others.
So I would like to be able to send all my emails from ONE address, without having the choice.
Is there a way to set it up ?
    Thx

I don't see any way to do this when replying to a message. The preference setting is only for composing new emails. I hadn't seen a preference to set for replying to messages.
You may be able to do this by changing the outgoing server setting for the other accounts to use only the outgoing server for the account you want to send from. It depends on your provider whether it will work or not. If all your accounts are from the same provider, it probably won't work. But if they are different, the server may change and show the address from the account as the server is listed as, even though you didn't send from that account.
I know when I would use my gmail server to send a message from my ATT account, the sender would receive it as showing sent from gmail instead of ATT.
