How to Force Disk Mount in Case of Trouble to Restore

It looks like the new firmware is similar between Classic and Nano 3G. Lots of Nano users have had issues with crashing and other odd behavior, where the iPod ends up in a state, where you cannot get it to connect any longer, despite the fact it appears to be in connection mode.
After much head scratching, I looked up on the diagnostics and found a way to force it into basic disk mode:
1. press Select and Menu to RESET, when the Apple shows:
2. press Select and Start/Stop to force the USB disk mode, you will notice the screen looks different from the standard connection mode. I suspect, this puts it into a lower level USB mode, which avoids the normal crash/restart cycle due to the buggy firmware.
After that the iPod shows up on the desktop, use 'Restore' to wipe it and put the regular content back on. In the case of the nano, I will avoid photos, contacts, and calendar for now, since they are the ones causing instability on my particular iPod.
BTW, these key chords have been in the iPods for a number of generations. I just forgot, since they have been such trouble free devices in the recent past.

Why after much head scratching when there's an article about it here?

  • How to force "mount sATA disk" in X.4.11

    I have a disk that is probably dieing. This 2.5inch Mitsubichi 80Gb was the startup disk on a Macbook (10.4.11 HFS or HFS+ formatted). The disc is still turning and only "ticks" a few times (but since it begin "ticking", i strongly believe it's dieing anyway). I connected the disc to my G5 (internal) at the free SATA connector. Disc Utilty/DatarescueII/Techtool nor terminal (ls /Volumes) can recognise the disk.
    So now i am wondering IF there is any other option to force the "mount" command, so he mounts whatever is sATA connector #2? I've read about a open source application "rEFIt", but this will run/work on intel macs only?
    any help is welcome...

    So, I connected the HITACHI 2.5in disk to my laptop,using a SATA ICY BOX. I stored the disk a night in the freezer (in a sealed plastic bag). I can keep the disc cool with the Airco now.
    I have DatarescueII, but it doesn't find an extra HD (other than the internal Macintosh HD of the macbookpro itself)
    Any more suggestions?
    I've readed about open source "rEFIt", but i'm not sure it can help me forcing the disc to mount. (edit: here's the source: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060718140450785)

  • How can i make my local disk mounted peramently

    i want to share my local disk to the network but i have a bad problem....
    the problem is when i reboot my local station i must to mount more time the disk manually,,, can anyone have an idea about how can i share my patition without
    mount it for each reboot, in another word how can i make my disk mounted automatically on reboot
    thanks

    Depending on how it is being shared and how you mount it, you may just need to edit your vfstab file to have the nfs mount made 'permanent'. That, of course, assumes this is being done via nfs!

  • How can you create a paragraph style that removes all spaces and forces everything to lower case?

    Hi,
    Is there anyway of using GREP (or some other magical wizardry) to create a paragraph style that automatically removes all spaces and forces words into lower case?
    Strange request i know....I'm wanting to use it for datamerged email addresses.
    Thanks

    so doing it through InDesign is a work around I'm exploring.
    Excel has the 'LOWER' function and the ability to record macros for a quick find/replace on the spaces - so that's definitely a good option if it can't be solved purely in InDesign.
    You can change case via scripting in InDesign. This AppleScript (OSX only) will set the case of the selected paragraph style to lower. It would be possible to add some code that would strip spaces as well:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS6"
        activate
            set StyleList to name of every paragraph style of active document
        set myDialog to make dialog with properties {name:"Document Paragraph Styles"}
        tell myDialog
            tell (make dialog column)
                tell (make border panel)
                    tell (make dialog column)
                        make static text with properties {static label:"Choose a Style", min width:150}
                    end tell
                    tell (make dialog column)
                        set myPresetsDropdown to make dropdown with properties {string list:StyleList, selected index:0, min width:150}
                    end tell
                end tell
            end tell
        end tell
        set myResult to show myDialog
        if myResult = true then
            --+1 gets the correct name because list starts at 0
            set myStyle to item ((selected index of myPresetsDropdown) + 1) of StyleList
        else
            return
        end if
        destroy myDialog
        tell active document
            set myStyle to paragraph style myStyle
            repeat with j from 1 to (count stories)
                repeat with i from 1 to (count paragraphs in story j)
                    if applied paragraph style of paragraph i of story j is myStyle then
                        --defines a variable to replace the generic this_text parameter in the handler
                        set SCText to the contents of paragraph i of story j
                        set contents of paragraph i of story j to my change_case_of(SCText)
                    end if
                end repeat
            end repeat
        end tell
    end tell
    on change_case_of(this_text)
        set the_comparison_string to "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ"
        set the_source_string to "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz"
        set the_new_text to ""
        repeat with thisChar in this_text
            set x to the offset of thisChar in the_comparison_string
            if x is not 0 then
                set the_new_text to (the_new_text & character x of the_source_string) as string
            else
                set the_new_text to (the_new_text & thisChar) as string
            end if
        end repeat

  • Known disk-mounting fault on iPod Video 80GB?

    Is there a known disk mounting fault with the iPod Video 80GB?
    I’m running iTunes Version 7.0.1.8 and have so far had two brand new 80GB iPod Video devices, purchased from a registered New Zealand reseller (TotallyMac.com).
    Both iPods have successfully loaded my music library and have played perfectly, both on headphones and on my iPod hi-fi. However, when I subsequently plug the iPod into any of the USB 2 ports on my laptop, the iPod does not show up as a device in My Computer, File Explorer or in iTunes.
    I’m running Windows XP, Service Pack 2.
    The problem also occurs on a second PC – the iPod refuses to show as a device in My Computer, Windows File Explorer or in iTunes. However, it does show up in Device Manager, and the ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ icon shows on the Windows status bar when the iPod is connected. Even so, when the iPod is safely ejected, the iPod screen continues to show ‘Do Not Disconnect’, so the only way to safely eject the iPod is to reset it on the iPod.
    I’ve tried restarting the computer, putting the iPod into disk mode and so on. Unfortunately, none of the advice on the Apple website for iPods that refuse to mount helps me – because I can’t get the iPod to appear as a device anywhere on my computer, I can’t rename the Drive Volume (to another letter instead of ‘E:’) or restore the iPod to factory settings.
    I can’t help thinking that Apple has created a ‘Catch 22’ situation by removing the iPod Updater option in iTunes 7 – none of the previous versions of iPod Updater is compatible with iTunes 7, meaning it’s impossible for people who have a Disk Mount problem to restore their iPods. If you can’t get the iPod to show up in iTunes, how are you supposed to restore the device or solve disk mounting problems?
    There appears to be no other way to restore the device if you’re using iTunes 7.
    Why isn’t there a ‘restore’ option in the iPod’s own diagnostics menu, some combination of click-wheel buttons that will allow you to reformat/restore the drive?
    My previous (40GB) Fourth-Generation iPod mounts perfectly on both this laptop and another PC, suggesting it is the new iPods that are the problem. Also, as I said, the new iPod fails to mount on the second PC, supporting this theory.
    Both faulty iPods have been set to ‘manually update’ and I also ticked the ‘Enable Disk Use’ option and removed the checkmark from ‘Automatically open iTunes’.
    It would be good to hear from someone else who has experienced similar difficulties, as I’m by no means a new iPod user and this has both me and the Apple service technicians I’ve spoken to completely stumped. Is it a known problem and, if so, will it be dealt with in future iTunes updates…?

    Try forcing the iPod into disk mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    And then see if you can change the Volume Drive Letter:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
    If nothing else works, you may want to give this a shot:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302538
    Since you did say the iPod continues to show Do Not Disconnect after ejecting it, I'm thinking maybe there's something on your computer that's interfering with the iPod.
    Also, when the iPod comes up in Device Manager, does it have any kind of warning on it? You may need to uninstall the iPod's drivers, and then restart the computer with the iPod attached to reinstall it. This may not be the case, though, since the iPod is still showing Do Not Disconnect while it's plugged in.
    You may also want to make sure you have the iPod connected to a USB port directly on the rear of the computer, or try a different USB cable.
    Also, you might want to try restarting the iPodService

  • How ASM Manages Disk Failures

    Hi,
    Was going through Oracle ASM document and came across this topic, need some clarification on this please.
    "The disks are first taken offline and then automatically dropped. In this case, the disk group remains mounted and serviceable. In addition, because of mirroring, all of the disk group data remains accessible. After the disk drop operation, Oracle ASM performs a rebalance to restore full redundancy for the data on the failed disks".   -- What does this mean?
    Thanks

    Simple example.
    Single normal redundancy diskgroup DATA1 with 2 failgroups called MIRROR1 and MIRROR2. Each failgroup has 3 x disks (let's say 512GB).
    Disk 2 in failgroup MIRROR1 fails. The MIRROR1 failgroup is not available as a result. DB operations continue unaware of the problem as MIRROR2 is online and working fine.
    The dba cannot fix disk 2 within the meantime for repair period of ASM. ASM forces disk 2 out the MIRROR1 failgroup by force dropping it. MIRROR1 has now 2 disk remaining.
    ASM starts a rebalance process to stripe the contents of the MIRROR1 failgroup across 2 disks - as oppose to 3 disks. If the space in use fits on 2 disks the rebalance operation will succeed. MIRROR1 will become online and available. But it will only be able to carry 1TB of data, as oppose to MIRROR2 with it 3 disks and 1.5TB capacity.
    If the space used cannot be striped across the remaining disks in MIRROR1, the rebalance will fail due to insufficient capacity and the failgroup will remain offline.
    In either scenario, the recommended action is to add a new 512GB disk to MIRROR1, reverting it back to a 3 disk failgroup, and then rebalance the failgroup.

  • Hard drive volume appears in sidebar Favorites when new disk mounts

    Hard drive on my 17” MacBook Pro Quad Core i7 (2.5 GHz, 8GB SDRAM OS 10.8.2) is partitioned into 4 volumes; I'll call them A-Mountain Lion startup drive, B-Personal, C-Work, D-minimal clean Mt. Lion for emergencies. Problem relates to my regular boot drive.
    I have Finder sidebars set to show 8 or 10 folders in the "Favorites" section and have ticked all boxes in the "Devices" section. Most of the time I have no external disks, CDs, etc., connected to the MBP, so the Devices section generally shows my computer and the four partitions. So far, so good.
    Lately, every time an external volume is mounted and every time a disk image is mounted, the Personal volume (B) of my internal drive, which is already showing under Devices, also pops up in the Favorites section of the sidebar. I remove it from the Favorites, but the next time an external disk or a disk image mounts, there it is again. It's always volume B, never A, C, or D.
    I have tried everything I can think of to cure this odd behavior: Used Disk Utility (verify all disks/volumes; repair volumes; repair permissions; etc.), though nothing seemed wrong. I've run Disk Warrior on all volumes. I cleaned out everything possible on the startup drive (A) with the latest version of Onyx. I've repeatedly trashed the plists I could identify in my user Library that had "sidebar" or "finder" in their names. I've logged in and out; started and restarted; started with shift key down. Still, every time a new volume or disk mounts, up pops this extra volume B among the Favorites (where it shouldn't be). I checked and unchecked various combinations of sidebar items in Finder Preferences. I've Forced Quit the Finder. It doesn't matter whether all, some, or no devices are checked; when a new disk mounts, there's the extra volume B again.
    I have only two other clues to add. (1) I created a new temporary user account on my startup drive (volume A), and this behavior did NOT occur in the new account. (2) This same behavior had arisen once before, a couple of months ago. I went through similar blind attempts to cure it then, but at some point I must have done something right because I it got fixed. For the life of me, I can't remember which of all the things I tried did the trick.
    Many thanks to anyone who can shed light on this annoying behavior.

    I can add a bit to my earlier description. I had said the problem did not occur in a new user account. Well, after using the new account for a while, it showed up. Eventually I erased the startup volume and installed Mountain Lion (plus updates to 10.8.2) fresh. I used migration assistant to transfer only my old user, pared down applications, and network settings -- no preferences, application support stuff. The old user carried over the problem. But I immediately created a new user and have been working from it for the past two weeks, very gradually opening apps, adjusting settings, etc., and testing for the anomaly at each change. In some cases I did move preferences from a backup clone, but was always careful to test after each addition. All was well for a week, until one morning I noticed the data partition had appeared in sidebar Favorites. So I'm back to where I was. I had been documenting each change or introduction I made. The only things my notes said from the day before the sidebar anomaly appeared was launching and struggling to activate QuarkXPress 9.3, and copying over my old prefs and settings for TextWrangler. I completely removed every trace of QXP, but the problem remained. (I did not remove TextWrangler because I just can't believe it could be the culprit -- but could it?)
    I also noticed a similar (though maybe not identical) problem posted in another thread <https://discussions.apple.com/message/20591050#20591050>, but so far no answers there either.

  • How to force device text to be rendered by adobe renderer

    Hi all, This seems to be the best place to ask this question. The developers of TLF are very responsive and I am sure that is appreciated by many.
    I am hosting SWF files in a parent SWF and the child SWF's can be developed in a way I do not have complete control over them.
    I need to be able to force the adobe text renderer on those child SWF's if they happen to use device text.
    I can do this already by enabling any filter in the parent SWF for the child SWF. The problem is that it can become very slow on some SWF files.
    So question is how can I do this without using a filter in an efficient way ?
    The reason this is a problem for me is because there is either a bug in Flash player or its just something in windows text renderer that causes the device text to always have full transparency when drawn in an offscreen bitmap. So device text becomes invisible. All text needs to be handled if it's in a TextField or TLF.
    The parent SWF will be running in 10.1 or above.
    Don

    Hi tinic,
    thanks for replying
    I did realize that filters force cacheAsBitmap to true....
    The thing is I do not want force cacheAsBitmap in either case as a general rule.
    Also, I have played with cleartype to gray scale alpha and there is no great way to do it as you said... even using RGB to gray scale you always end up with some text that doesn't look so good so choosing green is just about as good as any and its cheap.
    I have an instense app already. Most SWF's are not going to be a problem so applying a general cacheAsBitmap would be overkill.
    One thing is I could make a quick pass over the bitmap and decide whether to force cacheAsBitmap or not and this will help some but the text would have to visible in order for that to work at the time the pass was made, but would probably work in most cases.
    I am interested in what Jeffrey said about wmode = transparent and a possible fix there... If this is 10.1 or 10.2 i can deal with it...
    I dont care to much if the text is a little blocky or whatever as long as its not invisible

  • How to force my Web part to run regardless of users permissions

    I have created the following custom permission , which will allow users to Create items without being able to view,edit them:-
    $spweb=Get-SPWeb -Identity "http://vstg01";
    $spRoleDefinition = New-Object Microsoft.SharePoint.SPRoleDefinition;
    $spRoleDefinition.Name = "Submit only";
    $spRoleDefinition.Description = "Can submit/add forms/files/items into library or list but cannot view/edit them.";
    $spRoleDefinition.BasePermissions = "AddListItems, ViewPages, ViewFormPages, Open";
    $spweb.RoleDefinitions.Add($spRoleDefinition);
    $spweb.Dispose();
    then inside my "Issue Tracking List" i stop inheriting permission from team site , and i define the following permission for all users:-
    now users can add items and they can not view them ,, which is perfect :).
    But now i wanted to add a custom web part to my Create form which will hide certain fields if the user is not within specific group ,the web part looks as follow:-
    protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e)
    base.OnInit(e);
    InitializeControl();
    using (SPSite site = new SPSite(SPContext.Current.Site.Url))
    using (SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb())
    web.AllowUnsafeUpdates = true;
    SPGroup group = web.Groups["Intranet Visitors"];
    bool isUser = web.IsCurrentUserMemberOfGroup(group.ID);
    if (!isUser)
    SPList myList = web.Lists.TryGetList("Issue List");
    SPField titleField = myList.Fields.GetField("Category");
    titleField.Hidden = true;
    titleField.ShowInEditForm = false;
    titleField.ShowInNewForm = false;
    titleField.ShowInDisplayForm = false;
    titleField.Update();
    myList.Update();
    // web.AllowUnsafeUpdates = false;
    else
    SPList myList = web.Lists.TryGetList("Issue List");
    SPField titleField = myList.Fields.GetField("Title");
    titleField.Hidden = false;
    titleField.Update();
    myList.Update();
    // //web.AllowUnsafeUpdates = false;
    web.AllowUnsafeUpdates = false;
    then i deploy the web part and i add it to the Create form. but after doing so user are not able to create items and they will get the following error:-
    Sorry this site has not been shared with you
    so can anyone advice how to force my web part to run , without checking the users permissions or with minimal permssions ?

    in this case, use the elevated privileges to read/add/edit items with elevated privileges with below code.
    but make sure the page which you add this web part have at least read access to all user.
    SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges(delegate()
    using (SPSite site = new SPSite(web.Site.ID))
    // implementation details omitted
    More: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.sharepoint.spsecurity.runwithelevatedprivileges.aspx
    Bistesh
    Ok after adding :-
    SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges(delegate()
    users with the following permissions can create items:-
    "AddListItems, ViewPages, ViewFormPages, Open";
    and they can not edit/read them, which is great. but i am facing a caching problem , because if user is inside the "Intranet visitor" he will be able to see Category field as mentioned in my code, but if i remove him from the "Intranet Visitor"
    he still can see the field,, although in the web part i specify not to display the Category column if the user is not inside the "Intranet visitor " group... here is my current code:-
    protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e)
    base.OnInit(e);
    InitializeControl();
    SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges(delegate()
    using (SPSite site = new SPSite(SPContext.Current.Site.Url))
    using (SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb())
    web.AllowUnsafeUpdates = true;
    SPGroup group = web.Groups["Intranet Visitor"];
    bool isUser = web.IsCurrentUserMemberOfGroup(group.ID);
    if (!isUser)
    SPList myList = web.Lists.TryGetList("Risk & Issue Management");
    SPField titleField = myList.Fields.GetField("Category");
    titleField.Hidden = true;
    titleField.ShowInEditForm = false;
    titleField.ShowInNewForm = false;
    titleField.ShowInDisplayForm = false;
    titleField.Update();
    myList.Update();
    // web.AllowUnsafeUpdates = false;
    else
    SPList myList = web.Lists.TryGetList("Risk & Issue Management");
    SPField titleField = myList.Fields.GetField("Category");
    titleField.Hidden = false;
    titleField.ShowInEditForm = true;
    titleField.ShowInNewForm = true;
    titleField.ShowInDisplayForm = true;
    titleField.Update();
    myList.Update();
    web.AllowUnsafeUpdates = false;
    so can you advice please ? is this a caching problem, or once the user add at-least single item he will be able to see all columns ?

  • How to force the Netscape Browser to open the "Open or Save" dialog box?

    Hi, I tried to force the browser to open the "Open or Save" dailog box for downloading a file.
    response.setContentType(context.getMimeType(file.getName()));
    response.setHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=\"" + file.getName() + "\"");
    This works fine with IE for all file types( Even though he prompts twice to Open the file directly). but Netscape opens the file directly in the browser with showing any dialog box for text and html files. Anyone knows how to force the netscape in this case or for any file type? Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks

    any one has the solution for this issue ? I tried the search and I didnt find any answer.
    when your trying to open a pdf file as attachment is seperate window, it works well in IE but in netscape it opens up in the same browser, it doesnt open a seperate window

  • How many firewire disks ???

    how many firewire disks can i connect to my mac mini, so it has only one port, and what is the difference between macs equipped with two ports instead of one, there are two different firewire cards or it is just like an internal hub
    thanks

    The FireWire bus will allow you to connect 67 devices to a single bus. However, I believe the limit of the Finder and the HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) format only allows for 23 different hard drives to appear on your Desktop. You may still be able to mount more, but I'm not entirely sure they'll all be visible on the Desktop...

  • How to force datagrid headerRenderer to redraw itself?

    Hi guys,
        I had datagrid headers that blinks however, I want to turn the blinking off by assigning a new value of a property inside the headerRenderer. The newly assigned value is indeed stored in the property. But my problem is how to force this headerRenderer to redraw itself so it will execute the "override public function prepare(hasBeenRecycled:Boolean)" function as it has the condition that turns the blinking on or off.
    Any ideas?
    I had this worked but I have to get all the columns object and assign it to an arrayList then set the datagrid's columns to null and apply the arrayList. This works so perfectly in turning on or off the blinking. But this also scrolls up the datagrid back to top which I don't want to happen in my case.
    Ideas are much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Flex harUI wrote:
    I would move the blink logic to a shared function and have the renderer listen for a change event on some property and run that function.
    Thanks for the idea. That indeed makes sense! However, how do I assign a new value to some property inside the headerRenderer when PropertyChangeEvent only supports collection classes and ObjectProxy?
    example:
    from
    myHeaderRenderer.properties = {blink: true};
    to
    myHeaderRenderer.properties = {triggerObject.blink: true} // or triggerObject['blink']: true doesn't work either.
    Unless there is a way for the headerRenderer to listen to a property change outside of itself (referencing to the parent objects)
    OR
    a way to call a function inside the headerRenderer from the main (parent) document.
    Thanks in advance for your reply Flex harUl.

  • Disk mount problem

    I have an external fw disk that stopped mounting properly, at least when I log in under my user name (with admin privileges). The disk shows up in disk utility with the little fw disk symbol and the proper capacity and model name: 372.6 GB OWC Mercury Elite Por-AL 800/400. But the icon for the volume, External HD, appears as a piece of paper with a folded corner. It does not appear in Finder but it is detected in terminal when I run the "mount" command. This problem occurs whether I plug the disk into my iMac (using fw 400) or laptop (using fw 800).
    I tried logging in as "guest" and the disk mounts properly and I can access all the folders on it. When I end session as guest and log in under my user name, the same problem as described above recurs.
    When I run repair disk, no problems are found.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    TomK,
    I just had your same problem yesterday with my external USB LaCie Porsche disk. I've been using FW disks for years and this never happened to me before.
    I tried running the disk tests with Disk Utility, switching the drive on and off, with no result.
    Disk Warrior 3.0.3 solved the problem by rebuilding the directory structure. Now it works again and no file was (visibly) lost.
    By adding up what I read in this thread, I get to the conclusion that the problem was in the disk (not in the finder prefs) and is not related with USB vs. FW, as at first I guessed.
    I'm curious to know if and how you solved your problem.
    Could you solve it using a standard Apple utility or some terminal command ?
    I can manage unix commands if needed...

  • How to force users to enter their ID and password ?

    I am considering installing AirPort Extreme at our office. We don't want guests connecting to our network. is there any option/software that will force the guest to enter an ID and password to connect to our network ? This is similar to what happens at the hotels when we try to connect to hotel's network.

    The AirPort Extreme does not have the features necessary to create a "splash page" that provides basic information about the company and asks users for their identity and password....like you see at most hotels.
    Basically, with an AirPort Extreme, users would have to scan to look for the name of the wireless network to join, and then enter the password to connect.
    The best that you might be able to achieve with the AirPort Extreme is create a "hidden" network, which would require that users know both the name of the wireless network and password to connect.  However, based on experience, this might be more of a hassle than anything else.
    The bottom line.....Apple really designed the AirPort routers for home use, so that might be the best place for them in most cases.
