How to Force mac Thunderbolt External Display with Integrated GPU for Macbook Pro 2012?

I have been getting GPU Panic whenever I use external Thunderbolt Display.
Not sure whether this is software after(Mavericks) or hardware, if anybody could shed some light I would appreciate it.
The Current Discrete GPU will only work for few seconds 10 sec max before it became blank and require you to force shutdown. This also happened even without external display Blank and GPU Panic upon restart. So I suspected either the discrete GPU failure or software in Mavericks.
But at the moment I'm looking for workaround so I can use the intel intergrated GPU to use my Mac Thunderbolt External Display.
Thank you in advance for any input.

I have the same problem with an early 2013 macbook pro. gfxCardStatus ( http://gfx.io/ ) will allow you to force integrated and not do dynamic switching, however the external display still doesn't work.

  • How to properly disconnect a Mini Display Port (MDP) from a Macbook Pro 2012, 1,9?

    Hello:
I was wondering if any Macxperts out there had any idea on how to properly disconnect a MDP Thunderbolt Cable from a 2012 1,9 Gen. Macbook Pro. From my experience with older Macbooks the command was "Command + F7" or something of the sort.
On my Macbook Pro 2012, there is no such button or commend to properly disconnect the plug; as if one were to disconnect or "eject" an external HD. I have read some articles on Google that some people just disconnect the plug and that action is sufice to disconnect an external video projection (Ex: Flat Screen Samsung).
Can a Macxpert or Genius comment on this piece of information? I would really apprecite some light shed on this situation. I just don't see unpluggin a cable connected to a video source enough to properly shut off a connection with out damaging the Macbook Pro's video card.
    Thanks

    Hello, Niel:
I just answer my own question. Forgive me but I am not up-to-date on the techlingo (Hot Swappable) but I just googled the term and found my answer.
    Thanks again.

How do I use an external display with a macbook pro?

Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example.  Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized.  Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.
The display can Mirror your primary desktop or Extend the Desktop.

  • Hello! Help please! Best external hard drive preferably 1TB for macbook pro 2011. thank you!!!

Hello! Help please! Best external hard drive preferably 1TB for macbook pro 2011. thank you!!!

You can pickup any 1TB USB powered drive for about $100 at just about any local office supply store.
It comes formatted FAT32 (MSDOS) for reading by OS X and Windows PC's.
However if your files sizes are going to be larger than 4GB in size (like video tends to be) then your going to need to select the drive in OS X's Disk utility (in the Applicaitons > Utilities folder) and format the drive exFAT instead.
exFAT is a drive format that 10.6.5 and later Mac's, Windows Vista and 7 machines can read just fine. XP machines need a free exFAT drive install from Microsoft.
Do backup the 1TB to another 1TB drive using Carbon Copy Cloner or another backkup utility because 1TB is a lot of data to lose on a $100 drive.
I don't advise the "port powered" USB drive as these tend to have power issues and with 1TB of data on it, very risky. Use a powered drive if you can all help it.

  • Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Broadly speaking I want some sort of network storage( wireless or through my existing wifi router) that I can access files for both my windows PC and Macbook and also to access files to my iPad/ iPhone. Some sort of backup and sychronisation so that I can access certain files remotely.
Buy a real NAS.. synology or QNAP are the standard... although companies like Netgear and Western Digital and Seagate make them as well.
There is no problem sharing between Mac and PC now.. you do not even need a NAS to do that.. you simply share the hard disk directly. Mac talk SMB.. everything talks SMB nowadays.. so it is easy.
ipad and iphone are not designed to use NAS.. they are designed to backup only to the cloud or itunes.. but you can load an app like file browser if you want.
    http://www.stratospherix.com/products/filebrowser/
Remote access to the Apple TC is somewhere between difficult, to impossible from a PC.. Apple use BTMM and iCloud but the service is not offered to PC.
A real NAS will offer HTTPS or SFTP or several other methods.. that both Mac and PC can use.
You simply plug it into the current wireless router.. it is a network device and assessable over the network. It is not necessary to buy another router.. in fact that is a waste.

  • External display wakes up hdd of Macbook Pro

    Hi!
I encountered a strange behaviour after the 10.8.3 Update. When i put my macbook pro 2012 into sleep mode while my external display is plugged in my macbook via vga to mini displayport adapter, everythin works fine. But when i plug in or plug off the magsafe power connector from macbook, the hdd wakes up and sleeps again. This wake & sleep happens in 20 sek interval turn until the battery is empty...I think it's the hdd because i can hear a starting noise on der right upper side. The macbook will only completely sleep, when i unplug the vga to mini display port adapter from my macbook...
Can anyone reproduce this behaviour with Macbook Pro "13 2012 and OS 10.8.3???

Switched from a MacBookPro 2 generations ago to the new one with the thunderbolt port and now I have the same problem, but the coloured tint of the screen has changed since the new update. Still no fix, but the tint is less extreme. And the colour switches between the light blue tint and the original quite regularly. Nothing of the sort on my old MBP. I use a mini displayport to HDMI converter though.

  • How can I use an external display with my MBP lid closed and disconnected to power?

I know that I can use an external display when my MBP lid is closed and it is connected to power. I was wondering why it does not work when the power cable is removed.
I only use an external display when I am at home so my MBP acts like a Mac Pro or Mac Mini in that way, but it is not good to leave the battery charging constantly on a MBP so I want to disconnect the power and use external display and have the lid closed. Is this possible or do I have to leave my lid open when running on battery power?

I'm plugged into my wall socket at least 90% of the time - probably more. I always make sure that I take my MBP off mains about once every two weeks and let it run down to about 30-40% and then plug it back up. This keeps the ions flowing and the battery healthy. My MBP will be one year old on March 20, 2013, and my battery health is still at 99%. I run in clamshell mode most of the time now - since I bought a 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display. Only occasionally am I off mains - and then because I'm exercising my battery, usually.
Don't worry about running of mains most of the time - just be sure and unplug about once every two weeks (or twice a month) and let your battery dip to the 30-40% mark and you'll be fine.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • How can i drive 2 external displays with my macbook pro?

I just purchased an Macbook Pro and wanted to know if there is a solution to drive 2 external Apple
Cinema Displays simultaeously.  (Set up so displays operate as 1)?

I believe the TripleHead2GO requires all three external displays to be identical. Verify this with a call to Matrox. There is also a maximum resolution limit for the three displays together, which you'll want to be sure is acceptable to you and will look OK on your monitors. Ideally, the maximum resolution the TH2Go supports for each display will be the maximum resolution each display is capable of when used alone, because the displays will be sharpest at their maximum resolutions. If used at any lower resolution setting, they will be noticeably blurry.
I'm not aware of any other three-display options for the Mac that enable the monitors to operate with normal responsiveness (USB video adapters are slow). Yes, the TH2Go is expensive, and that's probably because it's the only game in town.

  • Can I Replace my Early 2009 Mac Mini Hard Drive with my Early 2011 Macbook Pro Hard Drive?

I am replacing my 2011 Macbook Pro Hard Drive with a Solid State Drive.  Instead of keeping the hard drive on an external enclosure I was wondering if I can use it to upgrade my Mac Mini's 160GB hard Drive with the one Im taking out of the MBP.  And if so, is there any special formatting I would need to do?

It should work fine. No special formatting required. It actuality, I suspect that if you connect the HD, the Mini will boot into the OSX that was on the MacBook.
When you replace the HD in the Mini just be careful with the antennas and their wires and connections I accidentally disconnected the wifi antenna on mine when I replaced the HD.

  • New Lacie Rugged Thunderbolt External Drive won't mount on Macbook Pro 8,1

I've searched, and am coming up empty handed. Any help would be appreciated.
    So I own a late 2011 Macbook Pro 8,1. that's running version 10.9.5.
I bought a brand new Lacie Rugged Thunderbolt External HD that won't mount via Thunderbolt, though it works fine with the USB. Any ideas as to why the Thunderbolt connection isn't working?

Silly question, but - did the drive come with a Thunderbolt cable or did you purchase one with the drive?

  • LG IPS display with HDMI plugged to Macbook Pro worked only once

    Hi!
    I bought this display (http://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-IPS237L-BN-led-monitor).
I plugged it to my Macbook Pro 13 with Mac OS X Mountain Lion updated to the latest version using a HDMI cable and a HDMI to Mini Displayport conversor. It didn't work the first time, but after searching in the forums i tried deleting the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist and it worked! Later on my Mac ran out of baterry and shutdown. I turned it on again but since then, i haven't been able to get the display working. It just says "no signal", and i can see it gets recognized in someway by Mac OS because when i plug it or turn it on the laptop screen goes blue, but then nothing happens and i can't find the display under System Preferences > Displays.
    I have tried the following:
    - Deleting all the files related to com.apple.windowserver.plist (including those under ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost)
    - Delete also those files in single user mode and also in verbose mode.
    - Deleted Overrides files for displays (/System/Library/Displays/Overrides)
    - Restarted in Safe mode.
    - Deleted .GlobalPreferences files
    - Reset NVRAM and SMC
    - As a last resort i tried reinstalling Mac OS. That didn't work either.
I have tried those and a couple of things more that i can't rememeber, but at this point i'm clueless. I guess my Mac is caching something related to the display and that's why it doesn't work. It's not certainly a cable or device problem since i already could make it work once.
Any ideas what could i be missing? I'm pretty sad i can't use my new display! Any help appreciated!

It was the **** cable. As it worked once, i never cared to test with another one. As soon as i did, it worked. So many wasted hours but pretty happy now.

  • How do i use my existing headset with my new 13" macbook pro?

the 13" Macbook Pro is missing the audio input socket and there is only the headphone socket. If you look at the 15" and 17" models you'll notice that there are 2 seperate ports for audio input and output. All the description says is: "Combined optical digital output/headphone out (user-selectable audio analog line in)" In the WWDC keynote they said that less than 1% of 13" owers actually used the audio input jack ...
so how do I plug in / use my existing dual jack headset?

migrate the itunes library from the old computer to the new computer then sync as usual
