How to force Premiere to render previews?

Hi, everyone.  I have a clip that's high definition.  It's been video denoised and colour corrected and vignetted, and to preserve quality it's rendered in QuickTime Animation codec with quality of 100 (lossless).  It's 37 gigabytes for 3 and a half minutes, and my humble MacBook Pro can't play it in real time.  That's no problem, as long as I can use previews to do my editing.
But it looks like Premiere Pro CS 6.0.1 is trying to use the original file instead of creating previews.  If I delete all preview files, the line above the clip stays yellow/green (I'm colour blind, sorry I can't tell the difference).  If I drop the sequence preview resolution, it stays yellow/green.
I want the original footage for quality, but I want to edit using something lossy.  How do I force Premiere to make a low-bitrate version of the file for preview purposes?
Richard

UT doesn't lose any quality and niether does Lagarith. Both of these codecs are 100% lossless. DNxHD is  visually lossless which I have done many many test with and I haven't ever seen any loss with it. But honestly I was just trying to recommend you consider using one of the codecs I mentioned instead of Animation beause Animation takes forever to render and also produces HUGE files and it doesn't produce any better results than UT or Lagarith, and for all intensive purposes doesn't look any better than DNxHD either (since it's visually lossless).
Also with Lagarith and UT and DNxHD you probably wouldn't need to render to begin with. (depending on what you're doing) but since you've been using animation already I understand if that's what you'd continue to like using I actually used to use Animation and PNG back before I found out about the options I have listed.

  • How to force LR to update previews in bulk

    hi all,
is there a method or setting to force LR4 to update the prewies in "bulk", means outside of the grid too?
problem is that when applying development changes on image sequences with hundreds of images, or even a smaller bunch of images LR4 only shows the applied changes in the current grid view.
for updating the previews one has to go back and forth in preview by hand. this seems a bit stone age and can take a while.
this was never a problem in bridge, which - although it took its time to create ALL previews - afterwards allowed for quick scrolling trough images with all previews generated. this was especially good for watching stop-motion movies and applying xmp RAW development changes.
for LR4 RC3, this would be a nice option to have... classic, like it is now, and a "force update previews outside grid view" with a true progress indicator / counter, like with bridge.
an example where we started using lightroom during production and ran exactly into the problem of slow / missing preview updates after applying batch XMP / development changes can be seen here (about 32000 raw files processed, 7500 used for the film)

    hi dorin,
    I don't have that. but I found:
lightroom>preferences>file handling>import DNG creation>JPG preview - none, medium, full size (with "embed fast load data", "embed original raw file")
    lightroom>preferences>catalog setting> standard preview size/preview quality/automatically discard 1:1 previews...
also "camera raw cache settings" could be interesting? in preferences>file handling

  • After upgrading to Premiere Pro CC 2014, I can't change the render preview location

Ever since I downloaded Premiere Pro CC 2014, I cannot re-route my render preview files. I have two internal hard drives and I need the files to go to my secondary one. With CC, it did this just fine, but since I've upgraded to 2014, it will not do it. I've set it the same way I did before in Preferences/Media, then set the Media Cache Files and Media Cache Database to the new hard drive.  It's eating all my hard drive space and I cannot render or export a large sequence. Is there a trick to this I'm missing that has changed?

Thanks Neil! I'm actually wondering how to change where the preview files go. I've attached two screen grabs. Right now my media cache is going to my SATA drive (my smaller of my two internal hard drives and the drive where Premiere Pro is located.) I want to re-route my render files to go to my Macintosh HD drive which is much larger and gives me more breathing room. I could do that before but since I've upgraded to 2014, even though I have it set in preferences, it STILL goes to my SATA drive. So annoying! I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong or if it's a bug. I'm still running Mountain Lion (getting ready to finally upgrade, I've just been needing to backup my computer), could this be the reason? Any ideas? Thanks so much for the help!

  • Premiere Pro "3 frame" render preview glitch

When I create a render preview in Premiere Pro, sometimes the render preview renders the same frame for three consecutive frames. In other words, after the render preview is complete, the render preview creates three consecutive frames that are the same, and then moves on to the fourth frame. It looks like a jump cut where there is none. this costs me a lot of time, since to fix it I have to unrender and then rerender my render preview.
How can I avoid this problem?

Hey Ann, I know that deleting the render files and rerendering will work. But this costs me a lot of time.
Is there a way to avoid this glitch in the first place?
It happens quite often. Am I doing something to cause this glitch?

  • How to Extend Render Preview?

    Hi all,
I have AECS3 Pro. When I press the 0 for render preview of my work (only still images and audio), AE only previews for 12 seconds, yet my project lasts for 30 seconds. When I press the space bar to play through the timeline, I let in run for say for 25 seconds, I then go into render preview and the render green line at the top of the time line shrinks either side until it can only play 12 seconds of my project.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thankyou

    You're running out of RAM.
Read up on RAM Previews in the help files to find out more info.
    Some solutions would be:
    Install more RAM
    Lower the comp resolution
Shorten your work area to preview smaller chunks at a time
    Quit other open applications
Preview only a region of your comp
Adjust your memory preferences for longer previews

  • Can't render preview on some clips

In my timeline I've got a bunch of clips - some have yellow lines above them in the render bar, some red, some green.  And then some have no lines at all, it's these that are the problem.
When I tell it to 'render preview' it will make all the clips with yellow and red lines turn to green just fine, but does nothhing with the clips that have no lines above them at all, it's like it thinks 'these clips are so easy to play I dont need to render preview, they dont have effects or anything on them', however it is sorely mistaken because when I play back the preview everything plays fine except those clips, which stutter and skip (because they are uncompressed HD video).
Is there a way to force every clip to 'render preview', not just the ones Premiere thinks need it?

  • Lightroom constantly re-render previews

I know it sounds strange, but the problem is:
Anytime Lightroom opens the catalog, it renders previews. No matter they're already rendered in a previous run. Close Lightroom, open it again and it will forget any previous renders.
It related to standard-sized and 1:1 previews.
LR 2.3 and 2.4, OS Windows XP x64 and Vista x64.
I have been trying everything. Changing the disk for catalog and sources, changing permissions for folders, reinstalling LR and Windows, running Windows in Safe Mode — nothing works.
So the question is: how to fix LR and force it to build preview only once?
p.s. After initial import the catalog file size don't changed even during preview rendering. And the same for Previews.lrdata folder.

    > How large is you preview folder?
In one case it is 1.5Gb size (13049 files in 13475 dirs), in another — 65Kb (1 file in 381 dir). The size don't changed during previews render.
    > How many and what type of images did you import?
Catalog sizes are from 300-400 images (typical) to 15000 images (recent case). But I'm trying to split photos into manageable pieces with not more than 300 photos in directory.
File types are mostly DNG (v5.4 and less), CR2 (Canon 20D, 40D and 50D), JPG, few TIFFs and PSDs. The problem persists for any type of file.
    > What exactly do you mean by rerendering (i.e. the thumbs change colour and tone or change from being fuzzy to sharp)?
Yes, all of mentioned above and of course the big writtings «Rendering preview…» and «Rendereng larger preview…» over the image in Loupe mode with color change afterwards.

  • Any solutions for lost render/preview files when opening files?s

Have any solutions been found for the intermittent lost render/preview files when opening a large file? I have Premiere CS6. A large project file that I have been working on lately opened without a hitch with previews intact ...until I bought new faster hard drives and rebuilt the computer (built with the same drive letters). I just installed the latest updates. When I now open this file, a segment of the sequence always opens without previews, unrendered, no matter how many times I rendered the file previously. I don't use 3rd party plugins. I am using the warp stabilizer. I tried all the suggestions that I have found on the forums (using a blank sequence to close and open, unchecking “write XMD…” etc.) but none work. I checked the render/preview drive, and these files are on that drive but they will no longer link to the project. It now takes a good 15 minutes to re-render every time I open.

I may have found a solution. I took out the warp stabilizer, and then added it back in on the clips in question, and then re-analysed and re-rendered. So far, so good. It seems that bringing in the warp stabilizer effect in the file into the re-built computer needed re-analysing (as I do after this 2 day exercise.)

  • Using smart previews on iMac to control two sets of identical original files on two external drives --- render previews setting when using smart previews

I’m just getting started with Lightroom and if someone can help me I’ll be very appreciative.
I’m using an iMac with a 1TB drive and two external 2.5 TB drives for backup.  My active files are on all three drives and I’m running out of room on the iMac drive.
With the smart previews capability of Lightroom 5, I’m hoping to remove all the active files from the iMac drive.  I hope to import existing images into the LR catalog from two identical drives with identical folders and have both sets of images reflect the changes I make using smart previews on my iMac.
I just created two identical test folders of junk images on the external drives and was following a beginners tutorial on importing. However, I see nothing about using smart previews on my iMac that, when connected, will update more than one external drive at the same time.
I’m also wondering if, when using smart previews, it matters how I set the render previews during the import process.
    Many thanks for any help,
    Karl Hentz

I don't see any way to use smart previews to update both external drives at the same time. The smart previews are linked to a specific set of images. But it seems to me that if both drives are in fact identical, once the catalog is updated when one of those drives is connected those changes should also apply to the files on the other drive. It's actually the catalog that gets updated, not the images.  Smart previews and regular import previews are completely unrelated. How you have your import previews configured will have no effect on your smart previews.
Incidentally, in order for my suggestion to work it would be necessary to only have one of those external drives connected. And when the other EHD is connected it would have to have the same drive letter or name. In other words it would have to appear to the iMac that it is precisely the same drive.

  • How much does Premiere Pro and After Effects rely on the hard drive it's installed on?

This may be a really dumb question, but how much does Premiere Pro and After Effects rely on the hard drive it's installed on if all your video files, assets, disk cache, etc are on different drives than the one the program itself is installed on?
The reason I am asking is that I currently have a "relatively" slow Sata II SSD for my C drive that has just my OS (windows 7 64bit) and programs (adobe editing programs, no games) installed on it and nothing else. All of the files used in my projects are saved on either a very fast Sata III SSD or a slower HDD depending on what the files are. For example, disk cache on the Sata III, stills on the HDD.
Being cyber monday I have the opportunity to buy another very fast Sata III SSD to replace my current Sata II SSD C Drive (just OS and programs). Both synthetic and real world benchmarks show a near double in performance. I just want to know if anyone thinks the upgrade is even worth it because for all I know there won't be any increase in performance since no videos, still, cach, etc will be stored on the C Drive.
The alternative is to get a second monitor because I currently only use one 21" monitor.
I suppose another alternative would be to not buy anything on the cyber monday deals and just save money for something else.
Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks Alex! I think you are right about not being able to notice the difference between the SSDs. I ended up finding a deal to get about $80 off a great monitor that I've been looking at for a while and decided to pull the trigger on it. I thought about it and realized that there have already been a bunch of times where I want to watch a tutorial on youtube and follow allong in AE or PrePro, but have to keep switching windows. I also frequently want to have my video preview on a separate monitor so I can have a taller timeline window. This monitor will help a lot with that. Thanks again for your help!

  • Extending Render preview in After Effects CC

I have a brand new iMac 27". I've googled to the best of my ability how to extend the render preview. Enabling cache has done nothing. changing the resolution as done nothng. Reducing the quality of the preview has done nothing, in fact it doesn't matter if it's full quality. It stops rendering the preview 100 frames into a 60 second comp. Any help is greatly apreciated.

  • How to force mpeg 4 video to always loop.

    Hello,
I've created some animated loops for for use as podcasts for video iPods. As required these files are in H.264 format and store as ".m4v" files.
Can someone please tell me how to save these files in a way that they are forces them to loop when played, not simply play once and stop.
This is critical for the iPod experience to be ideal. Thanks.
    -Doug

    QuickTimeKirk,
My goal is to create a looping animation for playback on an iPod. Should be easy right? Not with the QT!
    I did the following:
    1) Render a bunch of frames destined for looping.
    2) Convert them to an uncompresses ".avi" file.
    3) Open the ".avi" file in QT Pro.
    4) Click "Loop"
    5) Play movie. It loops nicely.
    6) Click "Export" and select "Movie to QuickTime Movie"
    7) Click "Save"
When I play the saved ".mov" file (You said QT retains the metadate requiring looping) IT DOES NOT LOOP!
To recap: This is a Quicktime movie. I selected looping when I created the bloody thing.
    It
    does
    not
    loop.
    This *****.
This is REALLY, REALLY, ANNOYING! *** is going on with this QT Pro crap? I simply want to loop the movie. Is that really asking too much? I don't think so.
Can someone, anyone, please, please, tell me how to force the movie to loop on launch. Forcing an iPod user to muck about and select looping (can they even do that?) is not an option. Period.
    Please help me,
    Doug

  • Render previews - more

    Hi everyone
CS3 system - though probably applies to other versions of software.
So I left my system running last night, rendering hours of previews for me. I can see that about 75% of what I set it to do was done, the last file being created at approx 1 a.m. However the system had an error message when I came in, and it had crashed. However obviously the preview files are written to disk, but the "links" to them from the playlist are gone. Is there anyway to re-link the files, or do I have to start the preview renders again (creating what in effect will be the same files, but they will be just linked up to the timeline).
    Hope this makes sense.
Look forward to hearing any responses.
    Thanks
    Daniel

    Hi,
I didn't get a BSOD, just after about rendering for 6 hours, I think it decided to give up. I have a properly built machine which I sometimes feel I drive very hard, but it does regularly fall over (though I use it for my full time job). I had a "Adobe Premiere has an encountered an error and must close" type error.
Earlier today, I had a debug error event. I suspect I am not alone in receiving these events. I hope that when I get my new machine it will be more reliable.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the "re-linking" idea, or the other queries I had with regard to having to render previews before exporting to get full-quality exports?
Here's hoping the one I left running tonight does not fall over.....
    Many thanks
    Daniel

  • Hot to force Premiere Elements Organizer to save my notes?

    Hello,
Is there a way to force Premiere Elements Organizer (PEO) to save the notes I have typed in?
I have been reviewing .AVI files all day.  I have summarize each file and written the summary in the notes field of the Premiere Elements Organizer (PEO) for each file.  I just went back to look at the notes I have made.  I found that many of them are totally blank now as though my work was never saved.  Much or all of my work is lost.
How can I force PEO to save the changes I have made so I do not lose them all again?
Am I doing something wrong that is preventing my work from being saved?
It would be good if PEO had an "auto-save" feature that would save the state of things every so many minutes to prevent lost work.
