How to full HDD clone (backup)?

Hi,
Any idea how to easy full clone (backup) 1:1 the same size hdd with sda1, sda2, sda3, sda4 (home folder dm-crypt and LUKS encrypted)?
I just would like to keep full system with all documents on spare hdd in any hardware failure...

Slav

arokh wrote:You can achieve the same thing by doing an rsync or tar backup as well, and it should be tons faster than dd.
I was using rsync (via rsnapshot). I was disappointed at how much time it took to make a backup, although I admit, there's a possibility I was doing something wrong. Eventually I decided that if it's gonna take that long anyway, I might as well just copy everything.
Plus, there are reasons why many of my files change very frequently, which would make an incremental backup less convenient:
Arch Linux is rolling release, which means the operating system files often change.
I have three other operating systems installed that either get updated or just reinstalled.
I rearrange my personal files kind of frequently (for example, moving 8 GB from "Downloads" to "Movies")
Plus plus, I have partitions that don't even have read-write capabilities in Arch Linux (UFS for FreeBSD, BeFS for Haiku), although it sure would be convenient to me for someone to prove me wrong in that regard.
So, for someone with a "complicated" configuration, like tho OP, I think a dd command would be quite suitable.
Just partition the backup drive the same way, mount it all under /mnt and find a backup tutorial in the wiki to make your own script. Remember to install a bootloader on the backup drive as well.
You prefix all that with the word "just", but it really sounds a lot more complicated than my one dd command... I don't even have to test my backup. I tested it the first time (I was able to boot from my backup, everything worked fine), and now I just look for errors from the dd command. If the original works, then the backup works.

  • How i can make a backup without separate hdd?

How i can make a backup without seperate hdd?

how i can partition the hd? please step by step...
    today it's my first apple-day ... i was 18 years windows user
While I agree with everyone else, get a second disk and backup to that disk, I will point you in the directory of partitioning.
Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
Disk Utility may or may not be able to carve a new partition out of your existing partition, depending on whether the end of the current partition is unused so the current partition can be reduced in size and a new partition added.
It may be necessary to use an external disk, clone your internal disk using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner (both free to use when creating a full clone), then partition your internal disk, and finally restore the external clone to the internal disk again using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you do not want to get a 2nd disk, then consider using an on-line service such as CrashPlan, Carbonite, Mozy, etc... for the files you absolutely cannot aford to loose.

  • Bootable Clone/Backup-How to?

Ever since updating to 10.4.11 a lot of strange things have started to happen on my miniG4
too numerous to get into .Like an idiot I have never backed up my system ( I don't use it for work, I'm not in school) so I think it is time to do an "erase and install".I do have lots of 3rd
party programs I would to hang on to so I'll copy them all to DVD. Here is my question: Do I need to make a bootable clone of my startup disk? I have tried to repair my HDD with fsck
disk utility an even tried AppleJack all with no success at correcting all the peccadillos that have started plaguing me.I have my apple installation DVD's but how can I do this and preserve my network prefs. etc? I have been a mac user for 8 years with no problems until recently,so I'm really inept at troubleshooting.Could someone give me a few tips on what to do here ? I would like to say that the few minor problems I've had I got answers to by reading the forums but this seems like a big thing. I welcome any and all sound advice and
    Thanks,
    Tim

There's no point cloning your current system because it is already corrupt. However, once you reinstall it would be a good idea to clone the new system while it's still in working order. Here's some appropriate information:
    Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    9. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
You can also clone using third-party backup software such as those I have recommended above.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.6.1 is Leopard compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

  • Replacing OEm hdd, how to restore from TM backup

    Hello All,
This is my first time posting, though I have seen many threads from here while searching google. My question is this, I am about to upgrade my macbook pro 13's hdd from the OEM hitachi 160gb 5400 rpm drive to a Seagate 500gb 7200rpm. I have installed countless hardware upgrades in computers...so the actual replacement does not worry me.
Im wondering about restoring the drive, When I purchased my mbp It had Leopard installed and came with the Snow Leopard upgrade disc. So when I format the new drive can i do the full install from the SL upgrade disc, or do I have to install from leopard recovery disk the SL upgrade disk? Also, after that I can just restore from a Time MAchine backup and all my files and apps like Photo Shop should be there right?
    Thank You

If you have a full Time Machine backup, you should be able to recover directly from that. See below:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/15638.html
Otherwise you could install directly from the 10.6 disc and then use the app disc that came with the computer to restore any applications that came with it (like iLife).

  • How to restore using increment backup after full backup restore in RMAN?

    Hi All,
We have a files of full backup of database after turning on the Archive log.
And after that, daily incremental backup is taken.
Now, i want to restore the the database into a new machine using both files of full and incremental backups. Can anybody give me script for restore of full backup and after that restore of incremental backup?
    Thanks,
    Praveen.

    Praveen,
    >>
In my case, i have 2 sets of backups. One is full backup and other is incremental backup. In order to keep the restored database upto date, i need to restore the full backup and then restore incremental backup. Now, i got any idea how to restore using full backup. My doubt is how to update the restored database with incremental backup also?
    >>
Restore always looks for level 0 backup, not the incremental backups.
Incremental backups comes in picture during recovery.
During Recovery, Oracle looks for incremental backups, if exists, it will do the recovery with the incremental backups, if no incremental backups available, then, it will look for archived logs.
Therefore, incremental backups never used during restore, they are used only during the recovery.

  • My time capsule backup space is full yet, how can i extend the backup space?

how can i extend the backup space?

    Two possibilities:
Add a new USB hard drive to the Time Capsule and start a new full backup and move forward from that point.
(Unfortunately, it is not possible to have Time Machine simply continue backups on a new drive. You have to start over with a new full backup.)
Or, if you decide that you really do not need all the old backups on the Time Capsule, the disk can be erased and you can start over with a new full backup and move forward.

  • How to recover a TM backup from a NAS drive

I am using a MBPro from 2011. I lost a lot of family pictures due to my iPhoto library loosing the connection to the original hi-res files. At the moment I try to recover those with Data Rescue4 but it looks I lost quite a lot.
Now, I do have the following situation:
Until March 2014 my iPhoto Library resided on my Mac HDD
The HDD broke and had to be exchanged
So I moved the iPhoto Library onto a newly bought 2TB external HDD that I connect via USB (a WD MyPassport Ultra)
Now due to the situation described above, I need to recover the last iPhoto Library that resided on my Mac, but which was never used in iPhoto since the hardware crash
When I open iPhoto and then TimeMachine, it does not offer me to recover pictures from that last backup, which is from March 2014 and is about 135GB large. I assume the reason is that I haven´t used it in iPhoto, so iPhoto can´t know.
The TM backup on my NAS, a 4TB Seagate Central is 1,2 TB large. The seagate central cannot be connected to a Mac via USB or wire. According to it´s description, the only way to get data on and off is via ethernet. Having read that TM does not support backing up from a NAS, I assume I need to copy the 1,2 TB backup TM file onto another external HDD that I can attach via USB. Is this correct ? Does this help ?
And then I would need to recover it - but how given the situation above ??
I am pretty desperate meanwhile as I´ve been working on this for the last four weekends...
Within the process of data recovery I bought iPhoto Library Manager, PhotoSweeper and DataRescue4 in order to help recover the data. But I don´t know if this helps here. I´ve tried everything to recover my old files with those tools already.
I would very much appreciate your advice on how to recover my TM backup.

You can or should be able to recover the iphoto library directly from the NAS.. you do not need to copy it to a disk.
TM cannot create a backup from a network source.. but it is very happy using a network target.
Our friend Pondini wrote extensive notes on recovery of various important files using TM
    See Q15 here. http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
There is a link in there to recovery of iphoto in particular under various OS.. but the guy died before Yosemite was inflicted on the Apple Community.
TM has never worked particularly well since Yosemite.. so I can only offer my hope that the method still works..
Here is an example of recovery manually of iphoto library from TM backup I did to show how it is done.
Can't access old files on time capsule
In Yosemite you might be able to simply right click on the file in Finder.. and it bring up an option to recover it from TM.. of course that would assume TM was going to actually work and that is a bridge too far for Yosemite.
In the end.. you can of course do a full recovery to a USB drive plugged into your computer.. I have also used that method to get around issues with finding stuff from old backup.. however IMHO the manual method of digging through the backup offers you the best chance of recovery.
Do protect the TM sparsebundle.. in the end that is the only connection back to you files you have.. so saving a copy of the sparsebundle to a USB drive is not a bad idea.. Certainly do nothing in terms of manipulating the sparsebundle.. you can extract files from it.. copy it to another location.. but make no changes to original sparsebundle on the network drive whatsoever.. so do not continue backups to it or anything like that.
My strong recommendation btw since Yosemite or even Mavericks was to use Carbon Copy Cloner.. and make a bootable backup of your main operating system and any other drives.. You would not be in this mess if you had .. so for future reference.. TM is not really adequate.

  • Can I use my iMac Ext HDD to backup wxp ?

Not too sure if its ok to post this here, but here goes ...
I am using a 500GB external HDD ( formatted in Mac OS Extended - Journaled ) to back up my iMac with SuperDuper , the backup only takes up a small amount of space on the external HDD , and the rest of the empty space is not used. I now would like to use the un used spare space on my external HDD to backup my sisters laptop which is running windows xp, is there any way I could do this with out loosing the iMac clone copy already on the external HDD, any ideas of how to go about this Please.

You can partition the HD and keep both your backups separate.

my iphone is broken, and i came to store to change a new one today. When I come home, I found I lost my backup and may be mistake is made during before backup. The information in my previous iphone is really important for me? how can I get the backup back?

If you don't have a backup then the only possible solution is to go back to the store and see if they can get your old phone and create a backup of that. I know very often that Apple employees will wipe the returned iPhones clean before shipping them back to wherever they ship them.
When you say your old phone was "broken" does this mean it is dead and won't turn on?
Do you have a Time Machine backup of your computer, or a clone that might have this info on it?
Other than that I hate to say you may be out of luck. Time Machine and/or a cloning program performed regularily will inevitably save your a** in situations like this.
    Good luck

how can I make a backup to an external hard drive from iPhoto if it won't open? I just wan't to make a backup to my pictures not my entire computer so how does Time Machine work on that?

you could also clone the drive or volume, or just some of the user folders. look for carbon copy cloner, then enable the "use checksum to insure file integrity."
you can have multiple iPhoto Library catalogues in different locations.
Continue to use TimeMachine and make sure it has 350% or more capacity than your system and data.

  • Time Capsule as storage and External HDD as backup

Hi folks. I looked around for quite a while trying to find an answer and not duplicate threads but didn't quite find what I was looking for. I've currently got an Airport Extreme and LaCie Rugged 500GB HDD for backups. My Macbook Pro HDD (250GB) is getting full so I'm thinking through best next steps. This is my current thinking:
Replace Airport Extreme with 2 TB Time Capsule to be used as storage
Continue to use Rugged 500GB HD as location for storing backups
Essentially use the TC as a NAS media server (which I understand is controversial) but to get around the whole not storing data on the same source as backups I would use a smaller drive for backups.
I have no idea about speeds though. Also we have very modest media demands. We have about 75GB in music, 40GB in photos and don't store any movies on our machine. We don't have apple TV or anything like that although I would be interested in streaming the music to the stereo somehow.
    So would this work?
    Thanks!

You can do a USB hub and multiple USB drives.. they don't always co-operate but that is all part of the fun..
TM cannot backup network drives.. doesn't matter if it is wireless or ethernet.. no direct contact no backup.. strangely it can backup to the network drive.
Of course there are other backup software.. maybe even better than TM.. like CCC which is not expensive and works well.. but you will learn a new meaning of the words slow.. pain and suffering while you are digested over a 1000years in the belly of Sarlacc will be nothing compared to this backup. Especially over wireless as all packets are dragged off the first USB disk.. over the wireless network to the computer.. then back over the wireless network to the AE and then the next USB drive.
    See for comparison the sarlacc.

  • How can I make a backup from my Macbook Pro?

How can I make a backup from my Macbook Pro?

    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
See Mac Basics- Time Machine. Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

    Hi!
My school recently reconfigured/reformatted my macbook and install the school image. Now it is filled with applications that the school help us installed. I'm not sure what you mean by that. Is your user account still there?
If not, and if you have either Time Machine backups or a "clone" as backups, yes, use Migration Assistant. See [Using Migration Assistant|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Migrate.html]. Note that you must be logged-on with a user account that's named differently from any of the accounts you want to transfer, or else be prepared to rename the duplicate.
If your backups aren't either Time Machine backups or a "clone," you'll have to drag and drop or restore using the app that made them.
