How to full restore from external hard drive backup

I'm a new MAC user and got myself in a mess where i need to perform full backup restore from external hard drive. Last back via time machine to external drive was 2 days ago, so the data is there.
What are the MAC boot commands to get me to system restore options. And there any useful tips you can pass on.

Sorry to tap into this thread but it was the only one that made sense.
I have been trying to restore my kid's libraries from an external HD. I assumed I needed to be logged into their Windows profile to launch each of their own itunes applications. As I tried to launch with the Shift key held down, I got the appropriate request about choosing a library. But when I navigated to the HD and found their .itl file, it said it was locked or I had inadequate permissions and would not proceed.
I then logged in as myself (admin) & then dragged & dropped the files into their respective folders. When I went back to open itunes, the songlist was where it should be but nothing played when I tried them.
Is this where "consolodating" comes in and what is it and how do you do it?

Hard drive crashed. How do I reconstruct from external hard drive?

A few weeks ago my computer started to act unstable. Amid crashes and freezes, I was able to copy (drag and drop) the following folders onto my external hard drive...Documents, Library, Music, and Pictures. Then the hard drive died completely.
I have replaced it and upgraded to Snow Leopard
What is the best way to get my old information onto my new disk? I figure I can drag and drop the Documents folder, but how do I rebuild my iPhoto library and my iTunes library? In my iPhoto library, I had several videos from my iphone. Will the process I use to rebuild my iPhoto library work on the videos as well as the pictures?

Drag the contents of your backup folders into the corresponding folders on the new system except for the Library folder. That's it. Toss the Library folder.

I am running Windows7 64-bit with Firefox 6. I back up nightly with WD Smartware.

How to find Application Support from external hard drive backup.

I have an external hard drive which I used with time machine to backup my old computer. I've got a new Mac now, and I want to restore the Skype chat logs to my current computer. To do this I need to find the correct Application Support folder which contains Skype, however I can't navigate to it using Finder's "Go to folder" feature as that only searches locally and not on the external hard drive. How can I get to it?!

Open the copy of your home folder on the external drive, choose Go to Folder, and provide exactly Library as the path; ~/Library is limited to your current home folder.

My wife has an iMac, and I want to transfer my time machine info from my external hard drive that it ultimately from my laptop...onto a new user name on her iMac for myself. How do I do this? Because every time I connect my external hard drive, it just wants to save the content from her iMac....and will this erase her user stuff if I do this? Thanks.

Connect the extermal drive to her iMac and run the program called Migration Assistant. (It is in the Utilities folder.) This program will create an account on her iMac and copy your user folder to the new account. It will not erase anything (unless you tell it to.) Assuming your external drive is large enough you can also back up her account onto it. One drive can be used to back up multiple accounts. It keeps each account separately.

I downloaded a clock from the app store and upon starting it my mac crashed. Everytime I turned I got a screen that said to turn it off. I eventually restored it from the internet. However I had previously backed up my harddrive using time machine and wanted to resore it from the external hard drive I used. Whenever I boot up into restore mode and go through the prompts to get to the option to restore from backup it says that my mac does not have enough memory to restore from back up and it wont let me. It sounds like you had a drive malfunction. The least you should do is run the Apple Hardware Test before you try to restore.

I just replaced my hard drive on a MacBook Pro 13", and now I am trying to restore from an external hard drive. The drive is mounted, but when I run Migration Assistant, it does not see the disk drive for restoration. FYI: I did not initially use time capsule to create my back-up that I am currently trying to restore. What do I do at this point? The help is greatly appreciated!

What happened to the HDD from the MBP? Is it damaged or unusable?
Last December, my Feb'08 MBP had a catastrophic logic board failure. The HDD survived intact, hardware-wise, with minor damage that Disk Utility was able to repair after putting it in an external Firewire800 enclosure. After purchasing an Oct'11 MBP, at first start uset the Setup Assistant to migrate the entire contents of the old Mac's drive onto the new. As per recommendations from this forum, Setup Assistant does a more thorough job than the Migration Assistant you run later at will.
So, if the old drive is readable, you can try this route. Just wipe out the new drive in the MBP, reinstall the desired OS and restore from the old drive when the Setup Assistant that automatically runs at first start asks if you want to restore from another computer.

How to import photos from external hard drive and exclude duplicate images

Hi,
I apologize if this is easy, but I can't seem to find out how to do it. I have an external hard drive that I used to back up my photos when I was in the Windows environment. I want to import these into iPhoto and/or Aperture, but how do I exclude duplicates that I may already have in iPhoto?? Also....should I import them into BOTH programs, or just bring them into iPhoto and selectively bring them into Aperture when I want to edit?

You really should choose between Aperture and iPhoto. Both are Photo organisers, both manage your photos. You need to decide which one is primary. Then only import to that one.
Aperture is the more powerful of the two. If you’re shooting RAW then deciding on Aperture is a no-brainer. It’s easier to have files in Aperture and share them with iPhoto than the other way around.
If you’re not shooting RAW, if the volume of photos is small, then stick with iPhoto.

Aperture is not an editor, like Photoshop. Like iPhoto it’s a database application.

How to copy catalog from external hard drive to computer hard drive to use smart previews when not connected to external hard drive?

I am very new to LR5. I have LR5 set up so that my catalog and photos are on an external hard drive. I found out that when not connected to the hard drive, LR5 cannot find my catalog, therefore, I cannot do any editing in smart previews unless connected to the external hard drive. How can I fix this issue so that I can edit photos without being connected to the external hard drive. Is there a way of copying the catalog off the hard drive on the computer hard drive or do I need to reestablish a new catalog using LR5? Does the catalog always need to be loaded on the hard drive? Yes that is correct. The LR catalog must be on the computers internal drive. Then when you have Smart Previews enabled you can edit image without having the drive they are on connected. Then when you connect that drive the images will be updated.
Just COPY those 4 folders over to your internal drive to a folder called Lightroom Catalog that you create. Then Open LR and go to the File menu item and select Open Catalog. Browse to the folder you created called Lightroom Catalog and select the Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat file and click Open. Once Lightroom restarts open the preferences, Edit>Preferences, and on the General Tab in the Default Catalog section make sure "When starting up use this catalog:" area lists where you have copied those folders. Something like Macintosh HD/Wherever you created that folder/That folder name/Lightroom 5 catalog.lrcat.

IMac restored from external hard drive-password wont work

I just had my iMac wiped clean and migrated my information from an external hard drive however after migrating everything to the clean machine, the password wont work and when I attempt to reset it via the apple id, it wont go through even though I have checked and rechecked that I am using the correct information.

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why your password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. At the login screen, you can cycle through the available layouts by pressing the key combination command-space or command-option-space. See this support article.

How do I restore from old hard drive to a new iMac ?

The logic board in my mid 2008 iMac 24" has failed just 3 months out of AppleCare. To replace this will cost me HK$ 6500. I was going to buy a new mac anyway, just waiting for the next refresh model to come out. So a new 27" i7 with highest spec and SSD and 2TB hard drive with AppleCare will cost me HK$ 24k. No brainer to just buy a new iMac rather than spend 25% of the cost to repair a 3+ year old iMac.
The hard drive is working ok so the repair centre said they will remove the hard drive for me and suggested I buy an enclosure for it , put the old drive in the enclosure and then transfer the program's, settings and files to the new IMac.
What is the best way to do this ? I obviously cannot boot up the old drive. Can I connect this drive to the new iMac and then use setup assistant to move settings and program's to the SSD on the new iMac , then use migration assistant to move the remainder of the files ( documents folder, iPhoto etc) to the hard drive on the new iMac ?
If not then any suggestions ?

Do as the repair center suggests and place the old drive in an enclosure then connect it to the new Mac.
When you first start new Mac run Setup Assistant and tell it to restore from the external drive.
It worked for me and should work for you.

How do I boot Leopard from external hard drive?

I'm currently staring off into space... my 3 month old MBP seems to have finished its painfully long boot and all that appears the Leopard background. The local Mac guru isn't available until Monday but did tell me I need to boot from my external hard drive. Um, how do I boot from external hard drive?
The cause of the problem: inserting flash drive powering up.
Tried safe boot. Only difference was iCal reminder popped up in space.
Mac guru told me do NOT use install disks!

Apple support has told me that you cannot boot a MBP from an external drive when Leopard is installed on a MBP.
That is just plain wrong.
1) Hook up your external drive. Use FireWire for better performance.
2) Launch Disk Utility and highlight the actual drive icon at the left. Click on the Partition tab.
3) In the Partition section, click on the Options button. Click on the radio button for "GUID Partition Map". This is the option you must use in order for a drive to be bootable on an Intel based Mac. Click OK.
4) Set up your partitions however you want and click the Partition button at the lower right.
From here, you can either clone your internal drive to the external, or install Leopard on it from scratch.
