How to get a good vocal sound with Logic Pro 9

I apologize for the ignorance of this question, but I am really looking to figure out a way to get my vocals to sound the way I would like them to sound, but I'm not really sure where to start.
I started out using Garageband years ago, and really like the vocal setting of "Live Performance" when I went to real instrument/vocal.  It had a sound that I liked, and I didn't have to go to a lot work to achieve it.  When I went to Logic Pro 9 a while back I saw that they had the Garageband setting of Live Performance, but it really didn't sound the same, so I ended up starting songs in Garageband, and then importing them into Logic Pro.
I would really like to move on and be able to set up vocals from scratch, and put in different inserts and play around with different sounds to experiment with for vocals.  Does anyone have any advice on learning inserts to use, and perhaps a tutorial video they might suggest that could help educate me on this?
I don't even know if you should start with Compressor, then Chan EQ.  Perhaps someone might be able to steer me in the right direction.  Thanks so much.

Klunde, you are missing out the most vital parts in your post. A vocal chain for recording is:
You (your voice) - Microphone - Mic Pre - (perhaps hardware compressor, perhaps not) - (perhaps hardware eq, perhaps not) - then finally what you are recording into.
The source is the single biggest influence on what you need to do in the mix regardless of what you are recording into. In our case here, it happens to be Logic. My own vocal chain changes depending on what i am aiming to achieve and this carries through to the mix. On one song I may use a blue face 1176 plugin if required and on another a CL1B etc. Both sound great but both sound different and there are a myriad of ways to use each one. The same goes for EQ's and reverbs. But what you need for all of this is a great source. Get this right and your mixes and decisions will be a lot easier and your desired results faster to achieve.
So what is your source for your vocals?
After this it is all down to taste. For example, a compressor going into an eq sounds different from an eq going into a compressor. Neither one is right or wrong. Experience and experimentation will tell you which you want to use for a particular song. Top mixer Chris Lord-Alge uses lots of compression on everything. Top mixer Bruce Swedien is notorious for using virtually none. Both consistently mix great records and both have spent a life time honing their art and skill set. Experiment but get your recording chain right which means choosing the right kit for your vocal and gain staging everything properly.

  • Trying to get this "One" sound with Logic pro 8

Hi everyone i spent like 2 hours last night trying to get this sound with Logic Pro 8 soft synths trying to find a sound exactly like or close to this sound: http://home.comcast.net/~tommykry/Weezer%20-%20Troublemaker.mp3
The sound can be heard at 00:19 and through out the song, its like a low bass synth kind of sound that drifts down when its hit, like a portamento kind of thing. In live weezer videos the bass player is hitting a pad on a keyboard so i know its a key sound not a bass guitar slide. ive heard this sound in trance and techno songs as well. I have Sonar 8 and pro tools 8 as well and can look there if i have too, also have an Access viress Ti, But im trying to do this all in Logic. Like i said i played around for like more than 2 hours going through most of all the Logic synths, patch after patch trying to find something close i could tweak, so if anyone has more experience with The Soft synths in Logic Pro 8 and can steer me in the right direction i would be greatful.
    Thanks
    Tommy

In live weezer videos the bass player is hitting a pad on a keyboard so i know its a key sound not a bass guitar slide.
He could just be triggering a bass slide sample...
It's some kind of bass sound that bends down, in a similar style to what a bass player might do. Whether it's a real bass or a synth is difficult to say (and probably doesn't matter a great deal), but in any case it's certainly compressed, and grunged up dirty with some amp sim or distortion...
    Try that route...

  • Is it possible to bounce 5.1 Surround sound with Logic Pro 7.1?

    Hi All,
Is it possible to create a song and bounce it in 5.1 Surround sound with Logic Pro 7.1.1 without extra software and hardware?
    Thanks in advance!

This will let you make a DVD-Audio disc in Mac. It's free. It is command line only, and not for non-savy computer users.
There are other commerical programs out there that make DVD-Audio discs. Search google for DVD-Audio OS X. These programs cost $100+

  • How can i use my axiom 49 with logic pro X

    Hey..
So I've been using logic to make music for a  while now and just recently obtained an axiom 49 controller to open my  possibilities. The only thing is, I have no idea exactly how to make it work the way I expected it to. All that comes by default is that my keybord works with all the types of preloaded instruments, but none of the faders or knobs work.. Is there something else i need to install or is it in the settings?
         Highly appreciate any help,
    Danny

Ok, I'll ask again... have you downloaded and installed the software that enables the keyboard to become a controller for all the functions you've described?
You have to be an active participant in getting things to work correctly.
Have you read the M-Audio manual that tells you how to do this?
Here, I just went to the M-Audio site.
    http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support&tab=driver&serie_ID=3&PID=65526d20ff 75725a01dcf4dfab822e9d#tabs
It looks like it's called Direct Link, I imagine it comes with directions how to install the software and get it working with the keyboard. It's for Logic 9 but I suspect it will work with Logic X

  • How to make Kontakt player 5 work with Logic Pro X ?

I tried adding a library but it keeps showing desired file couldnt be loaded ! Is it something to do with 64 bit or 32 bit may be ? Someone knows how to get me out of it and successfully use kontakt libraries here in PRO X ?

No problems with Kontakt 5.3.0 here.. All works as normal with LPX.  Both the Player and the Full versions of K5 are available as a 64bit AU plugin so no issues with that and LPX
    So...
Make sure you are using the latest version of the K5 Player...  thiough the fact you can access it within LPX tells me that's not the problem
    Therefore note:
Not all libraries will work with the Player version however but that is by design...
Also not all libraries can be loaded in as a Library to the Library list but instead must be loaded via the K5 file manager...
So, what libraries are you trying to use with the Player version of K5?
What is the exact error msg you are getting when to attempt to add a library to K5

  • How would Kirk Hunter EXS24 instruments work with Logic Pro 9

I understand that Kirk Hunter strings are quite good.  Does anyone know how the EXS24 version would work in logic pro 9? Is it just a question of putting  files in the correct directory so they show up in the media library, or is something else involved?
    Thanks
(Note : The orchestral strings that come bundled with logic are  disappointing. For a quantitative example, playing C1 (2 Cs below middle C) of the cello, there is no contribution at the fundamental frequency of ~65 Hz, as can be seen from an EQ analyzer.)

Kirk Hunter's EXS24 instruments work very well in Logic 9.
Drag the instruments folder here: User>>Library>Application Support>Logic>Sampler Instruments.  (Or place an Alias of the KH instruments folder at the above location if you have your instruments stored on another drive.)
I placed the instruments in the above location but have the samples on an external drive when using my MPB, and on a separate internal HD in my MP.
Click on Options in the upper right of the EXS24 GUI to access Preferences.  Make sure that Search samples on... is set to All Volumes.
The Diamond library is big bang for the buck when buying the EXS24 version.  I also have the EXS 24 version of Concert Strings ll.  But, it looks like KH is only going to release Kontakt versions of new products.  I ended up also buying the Kontakt version of Diamond.

  • Can anyone tell me how to get groove agent 2 installed in Logic Pro 7?

I've only just started using Logic Pro but I can't seem to get Groove Agent working. It works in stand alone mode but I can't get it to work as an instrument. If anyone can help it would be muchh appreciated.
    Thanks

Well according to your signature you have the Macbook and as fas as I know none of the Steinberg stuff is yet Universal so it appears you can't have it working just yet. Otherwise I would check that you have installed also the AU version which is what Logic looks for but in your case it doesn't help.

  • How to get a good wifi connection with Verizon FIOS?

    Hello...
We switched to Verizon FIOS about a month ago, and since then I've had spotty connecting problems with wifi. My iMac needs to be re-connected a few times per day, as does my son's Macbook. Also, we have four iPhones and we all have to wait for our phones to switch to wifi from Edge when we turn them on. With our old NetGear router we had no problems. Our PC's are okay too. Just the Apple stuff. We've already called Verizon and they had us change our frequency, but that didn't help. Before calling them again I'm wondering if anyone has any advice? It's very frustrating. My husband thinks the Verizon modem/router is cheap compared to NetGear. But we're stuck with it. I'm still hoping to become a Verizon FIOS fan.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance, Deb

Joe -- we do have our cordless phone on a shelf next to the desk that the modem/router are on. But we also had it there when we had Time Warner and NetGear, with no problems. So I'm not sure that's it. Also since the location of the modem/router is the same as before, I don't know why the location would be a problem for the Macs now. My son had wifi problems with his PC before we switched, but now he's fine. I obviously have no idea about the neighbor's phones, nor could do anything about those if they were a problem.
We have noticed that our cordless phone has some problems that it didn't have before Verizon FIOS, but we haven't really dealt with that yet as our landline phone is really pretty pointless now that we all have iPhones.
I guess it's the channels that my husband is changing then, because he said there are channels 1-11, and we've used 1 and 11, and now he's trying 10. So far I'm not noticing much difference on my iMac. I still have to re-connect to the internet every time I wake my iMac from sleep, or turn it on in the morning. I never used to have to do that. Same with my younger son and his Macbook. Also our iPhones aren't connected immediately when we turn them on. They used to be.
The only thing I know about frequency is that our cordless phone is one or the other of the frequencies you mention, but I don't remember which one now.
I think we were given a user guide for the modem/router, and my husband has been reading through it, but not finding anything about turning off the wireless part of the router only. Thanks anyway though for the link. I'll check it out to see if it's something different.
    Thanks, Deb

  • Is anyone using the novation impulse keyboard with Logic pro x?

is anyone using the novation impulse keyboard with Logic pro x?
I currently have an M-Audio Axium controller but I cannot map any of the controllers.
I need to buy a 25 key controller anyway so I was hoping to get one that works well with Logic Pro X

I have the Logitech S530 keyboard and mouse. I had no problems with it while I was using it with 2 PowerMac G5 and one Dell XPS, but when I got the MacPro I found that it doesn't work with MacPro and a KVM switch. Logitech says their keyboard and mice are NOT made to work with KVM switches, but I didn't find that until I started using it with the Mac Pro.
The other small con is that the mouse is made for right handed people. On the other hand, I love the looks and feel of the keyboard and all the keys. It also will do the boot up holding down the Option key for choosing your startup drive and holding down the Shift key for Safe Mode, which the Kensington keyboard will not do.

I am recording with Logic Pro X, using my Yamaha XS8 keyboard as a Midi controller. I also have a Thunderbolt Display. Every time I play and release a note on the keyboard, the Thunderbolt Display speaker emits a doink sound. What is causing it and how do I get it to stop? My sound is running through the Saffire Pro 40 Interface (Focusrite) into external speakers with powered amps.
Also, When I record I am hearing little pops in the system. I have checked all of my meters and they are not clipping. What is causing it and how do I get it to stop?

    Pancenter,
Thanks for the response, but I do not have a midi interface. I am using a midi to usb connector cable, thus bypassing the need for a Midi interface.
The Mac reads the USB cable as a midi device, but not the keyboard that I am trying to use as a controller. I have tried it with my korg sp 300 and with my Nord Electro 2.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,

    Tristan...
This is what you have, correct?
    http://www.alesis.com/usbmidicable
    This from Alesis..
"The AudioLink Series USB cable receives and outputs MIDI signal thanks to its internal interface. The USB-MIDI Cable connects plug-and-play to your Mac or PC for an all-in-one USB-MIDI solution."
Notice, -internal interface-. What you have is a simple USB MIDI Interface. Most MIDI interfaces are USB.
My point is (was), MIDI OUT of the Korg goes to the connector marked MIDI IN on the Alesis, those new to MIDI often get this wrong.

Getting your router started with iChat.
Appropriate for using iChatAV 2 upwards. Edits have been made for iChat 4
    Glossary for this FAQ
Routers: Any configurable device that sits between your computer and the internet link you have. This includes Modems that Route as well as "routers"
Routers seem to fall into two categories
Those that work straight from the box. See Apple Article HT1787
NOTE :This Article has not been updated in content since Jan 04 Only being changed to an Article from the Previous Doc listing
Even then some list that they need tweaks.
    and those that do not.
This post will deal with what you may need to look at.
First off make sure your device is acting as a DHCP server. (if you are already on the internet you may not have to bother with this.)
Check in the Tiger System Preferences > Network Preference Pane, in the "Built in Ethernet" option from the "Show" drop down list.
In Leopard the Networks are listed on the left with icons. The Airport Option will need you to access the Advance Button for the Next bit.
Make sure the TCP/IP tab is the 'front' one. You should be able to see Configure IPv4 and it most likely reads Using DCHP. Make a note of your IP address. It will start 10.xxx.xxx.xxx or 192.168.xxx.xxx (the 'x' s will stand for any number between 1 and 255). The range 172.16.xxx.xxx is also a possible value at this point. Rarely used, but it is part of the RFC for Address Allocation for Private Internets.
Your router is most likely to be configurable from your browser. You will need to find the IP address to type into the browser from any Readme or PDF files that came on the install disk or visit the makers website and download a manual.
The Port Forward.com site lists many devices and clicking on one will take you to a list of Applications. This iChat will open an page that will start by telling you the defaults to access the device
Opening or Allowing ports. Several Methods not all devices have all of them.
    DMZ (Demilitarised Zone)
This is a less secure setting that basically opens all ports and points the incoming data to your computer. (not helpful if you have more than one computer on your LAN). It can be considered as an extreme form of Port Forwarding
Port Forwarding (also Virtual Server or Pin Holes)
These settings are usually found in an Advanced setting.
You may need to set an incoming IP address (Usually 0.0.0.0 to any outside server), a port that data will arrive on, the Inside computer's IP address (your computer) and the port it will deal with the data on and the protocol it will use.
See this pic for an example of the description above.
In this example shows that on some Port AND Protocols need to be listed.
iChat uses TCP and UDP so some devices will need the ports listed one by one and some settings done twice, once for each protocol. The example above has a "Both" setting
See Apple Article HT1507 Previously Doc 93208 for more information. This is the Tiger iChat 3 list. The same ports are needed for Leopard except for these changes
    My Note 2:
On the first link Note 1 under tables in that link would be better if it read:
" 1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP -
    except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP as well;
and 5220, 5222, which need to be open for TCP only. "
    Note 2
GoggleTalk needs port 5223 on TCP. Also note the Server name for iChat 3 set ups
    UPnP Universal Plug n Play.
This is a simple Plug and Play type of setting. iChat can find it's own way through a router if the device has this capability.
By Not doing Port Forwarding, Triggering or DMZ and enabling UPnP the application is allowed to control the modem and the ports that are open.
They close after the application has finished with them on a timed basis.
On some devices the number of "hops" (how far away the UPnP can be "seen") can be reduced from a default of 4)
    Trigger Ports
Some devices offer a security measure that works by a first or trigger port receiving a data packet and then opening further ports when accepted.
The first port for incoming Video or Audio invites is port 5678.
    Pre iChat 4
When you click on the invite window the process moves in to port 5060 (so these will need to be opened by the trigger port) for negotiating the final group of ports from the group of 20 (16384-16403 These will need to open when the trigger says so as well). Therefore port 5678 triggers ports 5678, 5060, 16384-16403. All on UDP. Port 5190 neeeds to trigger port 5190 for both TCP and UDP.
See this variation where only the ports listed above are completed.
The other single ports need to be set one by one in addition. (5220,5222, 5223 5297, 5298, 5353)Replace
    iChat 4
The port used in IChat 4 is port 16402 instead of port 5060. The group of 20 ports is reduced to 10 (16393-16402). This is because all the In and Out Audio and Video data is on one port. Other that than the settings are the same.
At this time there is no Info on the ports the Screen Sharing in iChat 4 uses.

Here you will have to read around but this Apple Article TA25949 Previously Doc 58514 might be a good starting place.
Essentially whether you are wireless or Ethernet to your routing device makes very little difference to the way you do things.
Your computer will get two IPs from a DHCP server if you are connected by both methods. (iChat does not like this)
    Multiple devices
Make sure only one is acting as a DHCP server. Make sure wireless devices are bridged properly.
