How to get an Apple USB Superdrive to be recognized in Windows 7 VM

Hello,
I have just installed Win 7 VM under FMWare Fusion 7.x, and cannot get Windows to recognize the USB external Superdrive.  I go up under Virtual Machine and click to connect, it says it will and do I want it to always do this?  I click YES.  And nothing.  When I look under USB and Bluetooth drives, SATA is the one selected, but USB is not a choice.  Just SATA, IDE, and SCSI!!
If I unplug the drive and plug it back in several times, MAYBE it will be recognized, and sucks the DVD in.  Once it actually let me install software.  But that was it.
I had it set to ask what to do, so I could pick windows or mac, and it did to that, so I know it is recognizing the drive is plugged in.  I then set it to always be windows, but does not matter.
I got error saying device requires installation of Apple Bootcamp driver disk in the virtual machine.  NOT sure why, since I am not using Bootcamp at all.  However, I went thru the motions in Bootcamp Asst, downloaded the driver from the machine with the VM, and saved it to a thumb drive.  Relaunched the VM, went into the thumb drive to set up, and it comes back with error, this cannot be installed on this system.  What?????
So I am in a loop right now.  REALLY need the VM to recognize the external Apple Superdrive, so need to know how to accomplish this.
VMWare Tooks are installed, and VMWare is up to date.  As is Windows.
Thanks,
Lisa

Hi,
As mentioned in my initial post, it's an Apple USB Superdrive.  A generic drive works, but the Apple one does not, or works sporadically.  Seems to me that Win 7 does not have the right driver for it, but no idea how to get it.....
Thanks,
Lisa

If you just bought the iMac and the Sjuperdrive take the superdrive back and get a refund. The by any other brand external DVD drive that connects by USB and try that. Most come with a Y USB cable to allow you to connect to 2 USB ports to supply enogh power to the drive IF Needed.
Or take both back and get a refund on both, you have 14 days to return it no questions asked, and buy another iMac and some other brand external DVD drive.

  • How do I install an apple usb SuperDrive with my macbook that already has a superdrive but doesnt work?

I bought a macbook off of a friend but the CD drive to the computer doesnt work and was broke awhile ago. I needed to install some software onto this computer so I bought the Apple USB SuperDrive thinking it would work, but later finding out that it is only compatible with macs that dont have a superdrive built in. An Apple support technician told me that it could be done through a process, but she couldn't help me with. So it would be greatly appreciated if someone can help me with this problem. Thank You!

There is some useful information here about the process mentioned:

Of course you need to be very careful with any use of Terminal.

  • HT2499 I cant get my external Apple USB SuperDrive to recognize any of my dvds?

I cant get my external Apple USB SuperDrive to recognize any of my dvds. It only recognizes installation cds. Is there something I can do or is the device faulty?

Here are some troubleshooting ideas. The DVD read portion of the Superdrive may have failed. The CD uses a different reader based on what I was told by an Apple Store Genius when mine failed.

If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the computer and Superdrive tested. Supposedly there is no charge for testing.

It sounds like you destroyed your boot partition and the recovery partition.  Depending on it's age, your MacBook Air might be able to do a net boot.  Plug and ethernet connection into it and attempt to boot.  If it has the right firmware, it will find a net boot configuration on the net and boot that.  Then it will give you a Recovery Partition like display and allow you to reinstall the OS X version that came with it.... assuming that it was Lion or ML.  If your computer came with Snow Leopard, then even the net boot won't work.
At that point you need a bootable USB Key, or an external DVD drive AND a Snow Leopard installation DVD.
An Apple Store, if there is one nearby, MAY be able to get you going again.  However, whatever is on the SSD now will be toast too.

  • HT2801 can i use the Apple USB SuperDrive to upgrade my OS from 10.5 t0 10.6?

The optical drive on my Macbook Pro (Build 9L31a) broke a couple of years ago and I have thus far managed to get around it. Now that iCloud is about to reign down on my OS 10.5, I need to upgrade via disk. Will the new Apple USB SuperDrive do the trick or do I have to have the internal drive replaced. Is there another drive out there that would be better than the SuperDrive?
    Thanks!

Apple's USB drive won't work with your computer at all.

  • Can you use a Apple USB Superdrive with Windows

    Hello,
I frequently finding myself wanting to use my Apple USB Superdrive with my work computer but havent had any luck being able to load CDs to play or burn.
If anybody has a solution or information please advise.
Windows XP Pro, Version 2002, Service Pack 3
    Thanks,
    Will

It should work, as long as the drive is getting sufficient power.  It is possible that your Windows PC is not providing enough power through the USB port.

  • Apple USB Superdrive won't work

I just bought an Apple USB Superdrive. I works fine with a macbook air but if I plug it in to a 15" Macbook Pro either a Core 2 Duo or an Early 2008 model it won't work. The optical disc is not admitted when I try to insert it.
    I'm using OS X 10.5
    Any suggestions please ?

Ridiculous! I suppose it's all part of the business stategy to force you to upgrade even though the kit you have is still doing everything you want of it.
But I wonder is there a way of doing something in 'Terminal' mode to get other macs to accept the superdrive?

  • How do i make my usb superdrive compatible to windows 8

hi i cant seem to get my usb superdrive to work with my windows 8 software? if i put a cd in it, it does not take it. does someone know why this is?

The Apple Superdrive has been the subject of numerous myths and issues as upon its introduction it only functioned with the MacBook Air and Mac Mini.
There was much speculation that an extra powerful usb was required for the Superdrive to function hence it not running on anything but the MacBook Air and the Mac Mini.
The extra powerful usb myth has been debunked as the real cause is an Apple Proprietary USB to IDE card in the Superdrive see:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=6200271&postcount=132
If you read the referenced thread you'll see that a hardware hack replacing the Apple proprietary USB to IDE card allowed the Superdrive to function on all Macs and Windows machines.
Unfortunately Apple in their proprietary wisdom closed this loophole in 2010
The 2010 version (new version) of the Superdrive now has an integrated controller that can’t be removed as discussed in the referenced hardware hack thread.
The newer drive packing box is larger and is now labeled with the 2010 date.
    The 2009 Model Number: MB397G/A
    The 2010 Model Number: MC684ZM/A
I do not have any information if the Windows Support Software installs drivers that allow the Superdrive to function under a BootCamp Windows installation but in the past the Superdrive only functioned under OSX and only for the specific Mac Models specified.
As both of my 2009 Superdrives are hardware hacked .I cannot test the Windows Support Software theory.
However my hardware hacked Superdrives still function perfectly on all Windows machines not just Macs.
Please advise if you do get the Superdrive to function on the Windows side just by installing drivers for Windows.
Here is another thread with reference to the newer 2010 Superdrive:

    Merc beaucoup !

The Apple USB SuperDrive only works with Macs without SuperDrive (MacBook Air, Mac mini, Late 2012 and newer iMacs, and the MacBook Pro with Retina display). There are tricks to use it with other computers, but I don't recommend it.
You can use any external DVD drive with the Mac, so it's better to get a cheaper external DVD drive than the USB SuperDrive. Also, people have reported issues.

After you change the account settings as I described below hold your finger on any app until they all wriggle, then tap the "-" on each purchased with her Apple ID. Press the HOME button when done. Then go to the App Store and buy or download the apps you want.

  • Apple USB SuperDrive problem

I purchased an Apple USB SuperDrive a few months ago with a new iMac desktop. The SuperDrive was working fine. Now suddenly it has begun cutting out/dropping out on songs when I transfer them from commercial CDs to iTunes. Anyone else having this problem?

Yes, I have the same problem. I've been trying to burn CD's to my superdrive. Everything fine up until the update to 10.9.3. I'm assuming no fix is available due to Apple's customary silence when a problem emerges ...
