How to get ARD to control xserve osx server 10.5?

can anyone tell me what you have to enable so you can control server with ARD?

Hi
On the Server go to System Preferences > Sharing > Remote Management. Untick Screen Sharing. If Remote Login (SSH) is ticked, untick it. Unless of course you are aware of the potential security risk inherent with this. If you are leave it on.
Install ARD on another mac - the one you are using for example. Launch it, supply the serial number. Don't bother with a task server (this might be a step too far for you at this stage). Create an admin name and password (I suggest admin and admin - keeps it simple that way) and you should be looking at the ARD main window.
By default and the first time it's launched it will scan the network using Bonjour. You can select this and change it to Local Network. Either one will do. Explore the interface to see what it does. There is a fairly useful online Help available as well. You could also consult the ARD Forum:
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1007
By now you should 'see' your server or at the least its IP Address - which you should know? Select it and then select Control. You'll be prompted to enter the Server's admin account details (username and password). Once you supply these you should now be looking at the Server's Desktop. If your client mac is Leopard you don't even need to use ARD. You should be able to 'discover' the Server in the Shared part of the Finder's Sidebar. You should see an option to Share Screen. Clicking on this will present you with a login window. Again supply the server's admin name and password.
Finally you can vnc to the Server using a web browser. Safari would do, but you can use any other browser if you wish. In the url key in vnc://IPaddressofyourserver. You'll know you've been successful when you see the login prompt. Again supply the server's admin name and password.

  • How to get the absolute path of logicalhost server domain on Windows Sun

    i am reading a file from Xsql Folder, that is located in the logicalhost Sun\AppServer\domains\domain1\applications\j2ee-apps.(IN Sun Application Server)
    I am pretty sure that using the absolute path will solve this issue, so my first question is: How to get the absolute path of logicalhost server domain on Windows?
    i tried with System.getProperty("com.sun.aas.instanceRoot").
    but i am able to retrive Sun\AppServer\domains\domain1 upto this .i am unable to retrive Sun\AppServer\domains\domain1\applications\j2ee-apps.

  • How to get the absolute path of logicalhost server domain on Windows?

    My logicalhost server domain behaves strangely. I am reading a file from collaboration definiton, that is located in the logicalhost/is/domains/domain1/config folder. I thought, that this folder is used as an application root folder so I can read files like ./file from there. And it worked.
    But then I've installed the domain as a Windows service, restarted the PC. When the domain1 gets started, I get exceptions saying that the file can't be found. Then I restart the domain (in domainmgr.bat) and it works again.
    I am pretty sure that using the absolute path will solve this issue, so my first question is: How to get the absolute path of logicalhost server domain on Windows?
    And my second question is: Why does this happen?

    The default folder for a Windows Service is the system32 folder contrary to the instance root folder when starting it as a normal process.
    That's the why, haven't tried the how, but you should be able to get the value by calling System.getProperty("com.sun.aas.instanceRoot").
    Hope this helps

  • No Control of OSX Server with ARD

    Hello everybody,
    I´m new to Mac OSX Server and would appreciate a little help. I use ARD on my G5 to control the other systems in my network. A few days ago, I added a Mac OSX Server to the network..
    I activated Remote Desktop on the Server, still in ARD I receive a Access denied.
    Any Help would be greatly appreciated . Thanks in advance.

    Hey, what was the problem??
    I have a similar one!

  • How to create global Contact list using OSX Server Contacts Service?

    My goal is to create a global contact list for the use of my department at work. We currently have 5 MBP's and a Mac Mini Server running OSX Server.
    I have read so many forum posts and so called "solutions" that my head is completly spinning... like a record... right round... you get the idea.
    I talked with Apple Support, and they are going to walk me through the process of changing our network from "local" to a legitimate internet network. Enabling DNS and setting up open directory are some of the steps, and all in all i was impressed with the support i received. We did a complete walkthough of all the steps it would take to change everything, without actually making any changes (because I could not shut down the company server at the time I called).
    All that being said, I have been reading that actually creating and sharing a global contact list (and enabling specific user access for read/write for said list) is not as simple as Apple is telling me. I have read so many horror stories about not being able to edit the list, having duplicate lists and entries, and many other problems. It seems that this "Contact Service" is not really what its billed as.
    Im just looking for someone who has this already setup to shine some light on my questions/concerns. I have scoured the internet for information, and either i'm looking in the wrong place or I just happen to have the WORST possible combination of OS X versions, server versions and so on. I would expect a company who charges such high prices for its products to design them to ACTUALLY WORK how they are advertised to work!
    Thanks in advance and a thousand kudos to anybody that can help!!!
    -John

    That sounds like one viable option...
    The only problem is that I'm not sure how that would behave once the client MBP's are taken off site and connect to the network over a VPN or something of that sort.
    I figure since we have purchased the Server App and it contains the Contacts Service, I should try and get it to work that way (through that specific service on the server app).
    I would really prefer to not have to install yet another piece of software just to do something that should already work (or have the ability to be configured to work). None of us here are "Power Users", and we are all learning as we go and I got the role of the "IT Guy" when it comes to setting everything up. I'm dealing with lifetime Windows users here, and I feel there is a need to keep everything literally as easy as possible to use.
    I will keep your solution in the front of my mind though, as it sounds like that may work. I am not exactly 100% familiar with the OSX Server or the Mac OS yet, and I'm not positive where you would add the users (I couldn't just sit down and do what you suggested, i unfortunately would need a step by step solution so I don't fuss up our entire system).
    If you feel like giving a step by step, that would be awesome just for future reference or for anyone else having similar problems. If not, I don't blame you at all.
    Thanks for your reply, and if I find a clear-cut solution I will post it here!
    Thanks,
    J_Semp

  • How do I re-install my Mac OSX Server from scratch

    Hi,
    I have purchased two MacMini Servers with 10.6 OSX Server software pre-installed.
    I have changed the organization as our company name changed and run into license issues.
    I want to re-install the Mac OSX Server software and start from scratch. How do I go about this. I tried yesterday for many hours to do so and the new installs are still running into duplicate license issues and other issues. What is the best approach to do re-install? I am willing to erase the internal Hard Disk and boot (with an external DVD optical drive) if that is the best way to go. What are the steps?
    I have the original CDs or DVDs and have extra, external hard disks to do a Time Machine backup, etc.
    Thanks,
    Don

    If you are looking to do a nuke and pave of the system, and you have an external optical drive, then yes, that is likely the most direct method. Connect the optical drive, insert the installation DVD, and reboot the system targeting the optical disk as the boot volume (you can do this by holding down the C key or the Option key during startup).
    Now, if you do not have an optical drive, you can put the installation disk into another Mac running 10.6 and use the Remote Install Mac OS X application in your Utilities folder.
    Hope this helps

  • How to get the IP address of smtp server?

    For A record in DNS, we can use Java API InetAddress.getHostAddress() to get the IP address.
    But for mx record, how to get the IPaddress?

    If you know the hostname of the MX record (eg. mail.somehost.com), you can still use the InetAddress.getByName(hostname).getAddress()
    If you don't know the specific host name you can do a DNS lookup directly:
            String host="somehost.com";
            DirContext ictx = new InitialDirContext();
            Attributes attrs = ictx.getAttributes("dns:/" + host, new String[]{"MX"});This will give you a javax.naming.directory.Attributes object from which you can...
    Attribute att = attrs.get ("MX");This will give you all the MX records for the domain. To get the IP address of the MX hosts, you need to parse the record String returned. Usually something like:
    somehost.com       MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = mail.somehost.comParse out the mail.somehost.com and use:
        String mailhost = <Parse MX record here>
        InetAddress host = InetAddress.getByName(mailhost);

  • How to get certificate from sun one directory server

    I have installed sun one directory server 5.2. Now in order to connect to the server through ldap protocol i need certificate on the client side.
    How to get the certificate from the sun one directory server...??
    ( Earlier i tried the same procedure with active directory .and i got the certificate successfully ...as well as ldap authentication..but don't know what to do with the sun one..???)
    Any tips on this issue will be helpful
    thank you

    You didn't make mention of setting up ssl on the server side, so search these boards for openssl. Some nice person uploaded an nice example of how do use openssl to do this.
    To get the ssl certs for the solaris-client ssl authentication ( tls:simple ) to work you will need to use netscape to connect to the ssl port to get the right format. There are comments in that same doc on how to do that.

    you must use a server-side language supported by your server.  php is a commonly supported language on most servers.
    php tutorials can be found via google or any other search engine.

  • How to get dateformat from Control Panel? Please help

    Hi,
    I need to get the date format as per displayed in the Control Panel's Regional Options tab.
    May i know how to achieve this in java?
    Please help.

    Thanks for the feedback, actually my code is like this:
    SimpleDateFormat sdf = (SimpleDateFormat) SimpleDateFormat.getDateInstance(DateFormat.SHORT);
    System.out.println(sdf.toPattern());
    If i open up my Control Panel and change the "Standards and Formats" to "English(United States), the "Short date" field is now showing "7/9/2010" which is "M/d/yy". This matches the format obtained using (SimpleDateFormat) SimpleDateFormat.getDateInstance(DateFormat.SHORT). However, it still returns me the format "M/d/yy" after i made the following changes:
    1. Click on the "Customize" button to open the "Customize Regional Options" dialog window.
    2. Select the "Date" tab, from the "Short Date format" drop-down list, choose "MM/dd/yy"
    How can I get the exact date format displayed at Regional Options now, which is "MM/dd/yy"? Please advice.

  • Can't figure out how to install ARD on Headless Xserve G5 running 10.4.4

    Ok, I'm getting really frustrated not being able to figure this out. I have a new Xserve G5 running 10.4.4 I have no services currently rinning on it. I have all the sever administration apps installed (also 10.4.4) But my first order of business is to install some other software on the server.
    I bought Apple Remote Desktop 2.2 Unlimited and installed the administer stuff on my powerbook.
    But When i came to seting up the sever for ARD im baffled. Most documentation refers to setting up ARD on the server though the aever admin app. But I can't find any reference to ard in server admin.
    What am I missing ?
    Xserve G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   ARD 2.2

    One more thing...
    You may have seen these already, but if not and you're interested in seeing some of the capabilities of ARD in action you might want to check these out:

  • Tables - How to get cell value? How to get/set UI controls properties?

    Hi,
    I want to get a the cell's value of row x and col y.
    The table is not bounded so I cannot use:
    Table1.Items(key).DataSourceRow.DataItem("ColID")
    Another question:
    How to I set the properties of a table column which contains UI elemtents that I create dynamically?
    for exmpale:
    c1 is a TableBodyCell
    tr is a tableRow
    c1 = New TableBodyCell(Table1, tr, 0)
    c1.TableCellContent = New InputField
    tr.Cells.Add(c1)
    How do I set/get the properties of the InputField?
    Thanks,
    Omri

    Thanks Reshef,
    My Table's scheme:
    Column 0 - TextView
    Column 1 - InputField
    I was able to get a cell value of type TextView by using what you suggested:
    Write(CType(Table1.Items(0).Cells(0).TableCellContent,TextView).Text)
    However, when I tried to do the exact thing to InputField I didn't get any value (nor error)
    Write(CType(Table1.Items(0).Cells(1).TableCellContent, InputField).Value)
    I fill the Input Field and then push "Execute" button which supposed to write the value.
    About my second question:
    By using the cast (CType) I can access the properties I need (like Width) so it kind of solve my problem.
    for example:
    CType(Table1.Items(1).Cells(1).TableCellContent, InputField).Width = "15px"
