How to get bought movies from itunes on-to external hard drive?

Hey guys. I have iomega external hard as a backup. I've had it since june 2010, love it. I need to delete some things off my hard drive to free up some space, I thought I would do my movies. I can see that my itunes folder has been backed-up. My question is this; before I delete my movies off my hard drive (the ones I've purchased through itunes) how can I tell if my movies are in with the itunes folder? Wouldn't it show a folder or a list of my purchased movies?
When I go to my itunes folder all I see is my music and apps I've purchased, not movies.
I just want to make sure i see them in a folder, so once I delete them off my hard drive, i then can go to my external hard drive to see if they actually got backed-up.
Thanks.

how do i transfer movies from macbook to a external hard drive? it just wont recognize

So your MacBook Pro is a 2012 model (I'm assuming since you only bought it a week ago!)?
There are some known issues with the USB 3.0 ports on the 2012 models where they do not recognize USB external drives. This tech note may be of some help - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5172#12.
Some people that are using pre-release versions of Mountain Lion, to be released in the next couple of weeks, have written here that their USB 3.0 port problems are 'fixed' with the new version of OS X 10.8.
Try the Apple FAQ first and if that doesn't solve your problem, you may have to wait a couple of weeks to see if 10.8 does.

  • How do i transfer music from itunes to an external hard drive

I'm Trying to transfer music from my iTunes library to an external hard drive. how do I go about it.

If you have set iTunes to organize your library (under Edit > Preferences > Advanced) then all you need to do is:
with iTunes not running, copy your entire iTunes library (by default, C:\Users\user_name\Music\iTunes) to your external hard drive - if the latter is drive X, you end up with X:\iTunes containing:
    Album Artwork (folder)
iTunes Media (folder) containing (the exact list of folders varies with the types of content in your library):
    Audiobooks (folder)
    Automatically Add to iTunes (folder)
Music (folder - this will contain one subfolder per artist, each containing one subfolder per album)
    Podcasts (folder)
    TV Shows (folder)
    iTunes Preferences.plist (file)
    Previous iTunes Libraries (folder)
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb (file)
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb (file)
iTunes Library.itl (file - this is the iTunes database)
    iTunes Library.xml (file)
    sentinel (hidden file)
When everything has been copied, hold down SHIFT while starting iTunes.  You'll see this prompt:
Select Choose Library ... and browse to the iTunes folder on your external drive.  Select the iTunes Library.itl file and click Open.
iTunes is now running with the complete library (database, media and supporting files) on the external drive.
If you haven't been allowing iTunes to organize your library (which means that some media may be stored in other locations, i.e., not all under C:\Users\user_name\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media) then you need to do the following prior to the steps described above.
In iTunes, go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and check the Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy files to iTunes Media folder ...
Then select File > Library > Organize Library ...  In the next dialog check the Consolidate files option and (if not grayed-out) Reorganize files ..., then click OK.
iTunes will then reorganize your media so that you can follow the procedure to copy the complete library to your external HDD.
Last point: once you've done this I strongly recommend that you get a second external drive and use this to take a regular backup of your library,

  • I want to move just my movies from iTunes to an external hard drive but not my music

i have a fairly large movie/TV collection in iTunes.  i don't need these most of the time so i want to move them to an external hard drive.  however, i want to keep my music & podcasts in the current internal hard drive.
is this possible?  if so, how?
i've looked at this page & the video that details how to move the entire iTunes library but they do not address my specific issue.
iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
    http://www.cnet.com/videos/move-your-itunes-library-to-an-external-drive-5010991 0/

If you have one library, the movies are on another drive and you don't have the external running all the time you will have annoying !=broken link for all your movies until you turn on the drive and restart iTunes.  For things you do not want to have to see on a daily basis the best solution is to make a separate library and keep the whole movie library, media and library files, on the external drive.  The drive then does not have to be turned on all the time.
Make a new library by starting iTunes while holding down the option/alt key.
If you want to do it all in one library, to move some items:
    Sept. 2010, Consolidate selected content - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2589812 and April 2014, https://discussions.apple.com/message/25414357#25414357
Note, any purchases you make will still automatically go to the media folder specified in the preferences for that library so you will have to relocate files after each purchase.
A slightly neater method than that recommended by bodyxs is to move the file but re-add them by holding down the option key while dragging them to iTunes.  That should leave them in the current (the copy on the external) location, overriding iTunes wanting to copy them to the media folder.

  • How do I download a move from itunes onto an external hard drive?

For whatever reason, my hard drive onboard does not have enough space for a movie to download.  I don't want to take the time to clear the space, since the one thing Apple makes harder than a PC is seeing which files are the biggest for cleaning off hour disk.  I have an external drive with plenty of space, but can't seem to get itunes to recognize it as a destination.  How can I download my movie onto it swo I can them transfer it to my iPad?

luckily there are 3rd party tools that can help with that:
    Disk Inventory X
    WhatSize
I have an external drive with plenty of space, but can't seem to get itunes to recognize it as a destination.
before downloading the movie, go iTunes > preferences > advanced and point iTunes media folder location to the external.
iTunes will put new additions to your library where ever iTunes media folder location is pointed.

How do I back up my entire itunes to an external hard drive and restore from same if necessary.
    Thanks

This is where iTunes stores backups for different operating systems: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
I do not use a Windows machine, have a Windows Vista Dell I rarely startup now.  But, from what I remember with Win boxes is, you will have to create on the external hard drive a file system like that one iTunes normally uses, and then in the iTunes preferences or control panel edit the location for the storage to specify the name of the external hard drive, or its letter code, with the name of that file system you created on the exernal drive.
I would also move all of the files from the internal file system to the external since you have now told iTunes that is where they are...before deleting from the internal drive, test iTunes to see that it goes where you want it to go.

  • I was trying to move my itunes to an external hard drive and I have now lost all music not purchased with itunes

I was trying to move my music to an external hard drive but now I have lost all music that was not purchased with itunes. I never hit delete so its still somewhere on my imac. How do I find it?

Do a Spotlight search or do a logical search along folders that make sense such as looking in the music folder first.  Moving a library correctly should not result in any loss, and I can't think of any way to move a library and lost just a select grouping of files.  How were you trying to effect this?

  • Having **** trying to export films from itunes to an external hard drive! HELP!!! My mac air is FULL!

I have followed every article to the letter and can see the movies file sitting in my external hard drive, but when i click on a film SPOTIFY opens up! No film to be found anywhere!! What am i doing wrong? My mac air is full and wont run applications at the same time now!
    Thanks

What icon is present on the files? It sounds to me like you have your movies associated with Spotify as the opening application.  Get info on a file in Finder, then change the open application to iTunes, click on the "open all of this kind" button to use iTunes to open all files of that type with iTunes.

  • How to move from a "recovered data external hard drive" to the new Computer?

Computer 1's hard drive crash and all programs and data were recovered professionally and sent to me on an External Hard Drive.  Computer 1 was on Windows 7.  I can fun the program off of the External Hard drive fine, when connected to my my new Computer.  I click on the .exe file and it pulls up the catalogue as it should.  All off of the recovery drive.
The new Computer, is on Windows 8.1.  How do I get the Adobe Catalogues moved/copied to the new Computer?
I redownload Adobe 10 onto my new 8.1 Computer from the Adobe website.  Using the new download, I was able to open the Catalogue on the External Drive (F).  Cannot find a way to "relocate" the Catalogue to the new computer.  The pictures have already been copied to the new computer.
Please help!!!!!   Desperate not to lose the organization (tagging/dating) etc in 30,000 pictures+.
    Kay

Before we can give a solution, we need more information and we must be clear about the details of the recovery.
From your post, I assume that the external drive contains a copy of your picture files, with probably exactly the same folder path. I think that that path is identical in Win7 and Win8 (it was not in XP).
You have reinstalled Photoshop Elements 10 in your new computer.
So the main point is : what about your old catalogs ? It's quite possible that the professional recovery has also made a copy of those.
You'll have to search the external drive for one or several folders containing a 'catalog.pse10db' file.
If you find one or several, select the newest in date (or the biggest), the folder containing it is the catalog you are looking for.
If you don't find one, be sure that the explorer is set to show hidden files. Without catalogs, you can't restore your organization
Now, when you have found the catalog (the folder), you can do this test. With PSE and Organizer closed, double click on the 'catalog.pse10db' file. That should open the organizer with the catalog. Since the files are not in the same location as before, all links in the catalog will be wrong : different drive identification and perhaps different folder structure. That test should show you the thumbnails (the catalog cache in the folder should have been recovered; if not it's not that important, the thumbnails cache will be recreated automatically).
Now, how to 'reconnect' all files, that depends on what you want to do: keep them in the external drive or copy them back to the main internal drive. The problem will be either to update the catalog database to point to the new location or to recreate the same drive identification as before : letter and drive serial number, exactly same folder tree. We can discuss those options when you have made the first test.
If that goes well, don't worry about the location of the catalog : you can move it either from the catalog manager or manually.

  • How to get my photo moments/years to an external hard drive or dropbox

Hello! I'm stuck. I apologize if my technical lingo is wrong.  I'm trying to keep my head above water in understanding my predicament.  Our home was broken into while away before Christmas, and my 2009 Macbook Pro and new external hard drive were stolen.  Luckily I had just purchased a new Macbook Pro (it says here its OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.1 2.6 GHz 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3) and did I migration assistant on it prior to leaving.  However all the photos and files from my old Macbook wouldn't fit on the new one.  So I brought over files but not photos.  I then backed up the old mac onto an external hard drive (which was later stolen). While away we kept getting a warning that we were out of start up space.  So on the prompting of my husband that we don't need all our files on the computer and they should be stored back at home anyways we started deleting files to make room to download some of our travel photos.
When we got to home to find our home ransacked and computer and back up hard drive gone,  I then realized most of the files left on the new mac that I hadn't deleted, which were brought over via migration assistant won't open.  One computer guy told me that they are corrupted and without the original backed up hard drive there's no saving them.
So then I moved on to trying to move what files I have left onto drop box so that perhaps I could go back in time machine and get my files that we deleted while away. But now drop box says I don't have permission to move all the files, and has only moved new documents I've made since working on the new mac.
I do potentially have the option of trying to go back 28 days in my Time machine to before I deleted the files to make room on our trip, but one computer guy told me if I try this, it most likely will ask for the original back up hard drive.  And I could risk loosing what I do have.
BIGGEST concern to me is all our family photos.  Magically (and I say this thankfully!) I can still see all of our photos in the "Moments/Years" on my iPhone 5.  However when I try to download them into iPhoto.  It will only download the resent photos that have been taken in the camera roll.  I really really hope some very clever angel has figured out a way to get all these photos from Moments and into dropbox.  I should mention that I did try turning on iCloud today, but I get a warning that says "Photos synced from iTunes will be removed.  Syncing photos via iTunes is not supported when iCloud photo library is turned on. 6,818 photos will be removed.
So really I'm at a loss of what to do next.  And scared to try anything myself that may make matters worse.  Most the computer techs I've talked to so far seem as dazed as I am about a solution.   Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

You mean you transferred the media, not the library...
Now I have a laptop - but I can't get itunes to pick up the library location
The library location is in your /Music/ oflder.
Your media files (not yet in your new iTunes library ) is on the external drive.
I have changed in advance preferences, but the library does not display.
Because you have not yet added anything to your library.
    Quit iTunes.
On the external, create a new folder named My iTunes library (or something).
    Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library... and select My iTunes library on the external.
Go into Windows Explorer and move all the media files on the external into /My iTunes Llibrary/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.

  • Back up just some music from iTunes onto an external hard drive

I want to move just some of my music from my iTunes library onto an external hard drive (reason? the music cannot be got again but right now I am not sure if I need it all or not).
So I want to move, say, 50 albums from the main iTunes libraray to an external drive and then be able to move some or all of them back again at later date.
Do I have to copy the whole library over to the external drive and then delete the albums there that I did not want to copy over?  Or is there a better way?
And how will I copy back just some of the back-up albums at a later date - is it the normal "Add folder/file to [main] library command from the File menu?

  • Move PC iTunes library to external hard drive and consolidate with iMac

Hi, I have a PC that I'm not using much. I have a ton of iTunes music files on it so I went through the process of copying these files to my networked external hard drive. I have my iMac connected wirelessly to this same hard drive. I went into the System Preferences on the iMac to tell it where it could find the new library and I pointed it to the iTunes folder but there is not an iTunes Media folder like many of the articles state, like this one: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449

That does not really matter since to restore your iPod the computer needs an interent connection.
