How to get colors to print correctly

I've been creating some ads for print. I noticed that the solid colors in the ads (ie. boxes, vector logos...) are a lot different in print than they appear on screen. (For example, a "teal" comes out as a blue, and a "taupe" comes out as a green) I realize the difference has to do with the screen colors being RGB and print is CMYK. I design the ads in CMYK mode.
So, what is the best way in Illustrator to get the printed color as close to the screen color as possible? Should I be using spot colors?
I suppose the same question can be asked about designing logos in Illy. How do you select the appropriate colors so that they print as close to as they appear on screen?
Thank you,
Ron

>There are two issues that have not been addressed. The quality of the monitor affects how colors are displayed. If you have a poor LCD, and slouch when you're using it, the viewing angles might throw off your color sense.
Nobody reads post #5.
>If you're doing big print runs, you might want a color test page shown to you before you print out a million copies.
Hector, what you call a "color test page" is known as a
contract proof here, and it's something on which you should
absolutely insist, whether the print run is large or small. Once you sign off on the proof, it becomes the printer's responsibility to get the colors right. This is S.O.P.
With unlimited budgets, an unlimited number of custom (e.g., Pantone) colors are possible. But even that road has bumps. Use too many colors and, aside from the expense, you're looking at multiple passes through the press with attendant potential registration problems. Plus, if your document contains photographic images, colors can come out wacky no matter how many Pantones you specify.
CMYK is a real-world solution for those with cost constraints. It behooves the designer, therefore, to invest in a decent monitor and calibrator and take the time to understand modern profile-based color management.
>The printer might be using a diffrent color profile
Of course, they'll be using a different color profile
if they know what they're doing. The standard SWOP profile you might use for your document, for example, is a
generic profile. The printing company should be making a conversion to a custom profile that represents their output device, namely their particular printing press with the paper and inks in use.
The entire point of your embedding a profile is to enable the output service provider to apply an appropriate device profile at press time without having to guess what the CMYK "numbers" (values) mean in your particular document.
If they
don't use a "different" profile, you're in trouble.

  • Why can't I get Blue Colors to Print Correctly??? It prints violet/blue!!

I'm runing Windows 7 - 64 Bitwith Adobe CS5 Master Collection. But ever since I allowed CS5 Photoshop to control my new printer (HP Photosmart Prem C310) to do a test print of a graphic that I created all of my Blues print a violet/blue color, no matter what color blue I try to print. It has even affected MS Word & MS Project when I try to print known blue colored fonts or Gantt Chart Blues will no longer print blue. but it will print the same violet/blue color. I've even tried a brilliant stock windows blue which all view great, but prints the same shades of violet/blue! All my color paletes and blues view perfect. My monitor is calibrated and I've reset my new printer several times and still the same problem. I never had this problem before until I installed CS5 Suite.
A strange thing is that I can run the check printer test and the data and image that is stored in the printer willl print every color perfectly, including blues. Plus I've ran a full color copy directly from the scanner bed and the copy prints perfect as well. I almost feel as though Adobe CS5 has possessed my PC and Printer! So does anyone on here have the knowledge of getting this to print correctly like it did before installing CS5 Master Suite? Thanks to all who can take the time to respond back with solutions to my problem as I have been trying to correct it for nearly three weeks now! Could  the problem be in Adobes hidden files possibly??? Thanks....

    Dave,
there are at least two explanations, why Blue appears Violet on a print:
    1. The printer isn't correctly calibrated or not calibrated at all.
    2. A difficult explanation, please look here at p.60,61:
    http://www.fho-emden.de/~hoffmann/cielab03022003.pdf
    (the doc may have 2MBytes)
We are in the color space CIELab. A printer color space (gamut volume)
looks like a fruit in CIELab.
Pure (saturated) blue is mostly out-of-gamut for the printer space -
it cannot be printed with correct appearance.
A gamut compression is required. The blue has to be shifted towards
the middle axis L* of CIELab, in order to make it less saturated.
Correctly that should be done on a curved line (p.60, plane a*,b*),
but often it's done on a straight line towards the middle axis (dashed).
This straight line crosses areas which are not blue but slightly violet!
    Remedies:
Use Softproofing for the appearance in the simulated prints.
If it is photo, for instance a blue sky, then shift the sky blue slightly
    towards cyan.
If it is a spot color or a strong RGB blue, then use something else.

  • Colors not printing correctly. Only blue and black work.

I just got a new HP OfficeJet all in one inkjet 8620 printer. The colors aren't printing correctly. Everything comes out light blue with black lettering. I tried installing new cartridges (genuine HP) and also tried gently shaking the cartridges. But the problem persists.

    Hi @Iolanthe ,
I see that you are experiencing issues with the colors not printing correctly. I would like to help you resolve this issue.
I have provided a document with some steps to try to see if that will resolve the issue.
Fixing Print Quality Problems for the HP Officejet Pro 8610, 8620, 8630, 8640, and 8660 e-All-in-One...
Please let me know the results of the Print Quality Diagnostic Page?
If the test pages are printing properly, it could be a software issue.
What operating system are you using? Mac OS X: How Do I Find Which Mac OS X Version Is on My Computer?
Check the driver name that is installed for the printer. Make sure it shows just the printer's name.
Click the Apple menu and then click System Preferences. Click Printers & Scanners, highlight the printer name on the left side and on the right side of the screen it should show the printer's name. (Officejet 8620)
If the full printer name isn't listed correctly, delete it and add the printer name back in from the list. Click the - sign to delete the driver and then click the + sign to add the driver, might have to click the drop down to select the printer's name to add it in.
Let me know how the printer name was listed.
From the application, make sure you are selecting the proper paper type.
Try another application to see if you have the same issue.
How is the printer connected? (USB/Ethernet/Wireless)
If you need further assistance, just let me know.
    Have a great day!
    Thank You.

  • IPhoto colors not printing correctly

I have a student who is using iPhoto and when she prints the colors that print are usually too orange or too green. Other students using the same printer and iPhoto are getting perfect results. We'lve calibrated her monitor and no change. She emailed the photo to another student and it looked like what is printing (or closer to it).
    Any suggestions?

I don't know how the Pro900 driver options look but for my older Canion i850 it's this:

  • How to get my C309a printer to only use black ink cartridge?.

I have changed my ink cartridges 3 times.  ALL of them.   I haven't had the printer for that long.  I only print TEXT so only BLACK INK. And not that much of it either.  SO why does all of the cartridges get used up?  I cannot find anything where you can adjust or fix this problem.  HELP as I don't have the money to keep buying all this ink.

The Photosmart c309a does allow printing in black if a color ink is depleted - I have one here.  What is your printer model?
HP and other printer manufacturers have different printer technologies for different needs.
Some have printheads built into the ink cartridges.  These printers can typically print with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black (but not both) cartridges removed. The Deskjet 6980 series is an example.
Other printers have separate ink supplies and replaceable printheads.  An example would be the Officejet 6500 printers.  The printhead in these printers can be replaced if they are damaged by running the printhead with colors out.  Some of these printers will allow printing with a color out, other will not.  If the printer is run without ink in one or more colors the printer may be damaged, but the user may be able to recover without having to send the printer for service.
Other printers have permanent printheads.  To run these without some ink in all the colors would risk causing damage to the printhead due to clogs, air ingested in the printheadvor burned out printhead firing resistors. The Photosmart 3310 series is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed printheads this could require service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.
The document here has information on how ink is used.

  • [SOLVED]How to get colorful output when pipe yaourt's STDIO to less?

    Hello, second post to NC.
My question is how to get a piped(e.g. pipe yaourt's STDOUT to less) program's colorful output on screen without such option like '--color=always'.
Before post this, I've configured less's default behaviour in "~/.zshrc" with following
    less() {
    env LESS=R less "$@"
    And When I run:
    $ dmesg --color=always | less
Everything works fine(I get good, colorful output), but when I run this:
$ yaourt -Qe --date | less
Seems that I can only get grey output on terminal emulator (without 'less' I get colorful output).
Does anyone has idea about getting yaourt's colorful output with 'less' ?

Thanks for reply and after serveral mintues googling & getting some help from IRC:
It seems that there're some utilities that do not provide such a option like 'color=always', what we need to do is trick these utilities into thinking their's STDIO is to a tty, not a pipe.
    1. stdoutisatty way (aur/stdoutisatty-git is needed) from [0]:
$ stdoutisatty yaourt -Qe --date | less
    2. socat way (extra/socat is needed, sometimes doesn't work fine) from [1]:
    $ socat EXEC:"yaourt -Qe --date",pty STDIO | less
    3. script way (sometimes doesn't work fine) from [2]:
$ script -fqc 'yaourt -Qe --date' | less
    4. unbuffer way (extra/expect is needed) from [3]:
$ unbuffer yaourt -Qe --date | less
    5. zpty way (extra/zsh is needed) slightly modified from [4]:
    zmodload zsh/zpty
    autoload colors && colors
    pty() {
    local VERSION=0.2
    if [[ -t 0 && $# -ne 0 && ${1} != '--help' ]];then

    ## when piping function pty to a pager, it may be a good idea to disable ^C *in this function*. assume that you're going to run this command: pty ls -alRi --color | less
    ## and now you enter a pager, and you press the End key by accident, and the pager seems stuck, and to get unstuck you pressed ^C, then the entire function interrupted. so to avoid the interrupt:

  • How to manage colors when printing on colored paper?

I created a design with correct colors and of course when I do the "simulate colored paper" the colors are off (as expected), is there an easy way to alter the colors to match the original colors so that it prints correctly on the colored paper? I figured there might be a way to subtract the color of the paper from the object colors or something.  Any workflow help is greatly appreciated!

Inks are transparent and the colours are subtractive, so I’m afraid that any amount of ‘correcting’ will never get you to where you want to go. The colours will always be tinted (or darkened) by the paper. However it may not be necessary to do anything. Take for example financial newspapers. They are often printed on pink paper yet after a time you start to stop noticing the pinkness and colour photos appear normal.

  • How to get existing (Dlink) printer servers working with Snow Leopard

I have a new macbook. We have two existing Dlink 1260 print servers serving 3 Windows machines. Both connect to our network via CAT5, we have a Buffalo router and cable modem service. One print server has a HP inkjet ands the other has a Canon inkjet printer. I know the IP addresses (static) and TCP ports of the two print servers. Apple's support people told me they arent trained to help me on print servers.
How does one install these print servers in Snow Leopard 10.6?? I am out of ideas other than Geek Squad :>(

I would imagine you need to connect via IP, LPD, put the IP address of the server in for Address and the Port Name in for the Queue.
You will need Postscript drivers for the printers, based on info on the D-Link site.

  • How to get consistent colour prints from different Macs?

    Hello Forum,
we are unable to get consistent colour prints from the various Macs in our office. There is only one printer, and for the sake of this discussion only one PDF file to be printed. The Macs have various OSes, from 10.4.11 up to 10.9.5; most are Minis of one vintage or another.
The printed results *should* IMHO be identical no matter which computer issues the "print" command, but they are far from that. Some computers print with a reddish tint, others with too little saturation or too much brightness (to put it in Photoshop terms).
What exactly must we do to get identical results no matter which computer does the printing?
    Thanks in advance
    John
p.s. May I just say what a ridiculous pain in the neck it is to have to choose from that list of purchasable Apple products aka communities? Some questions, like this one, do not belong in a single community or at least there is no community whose title describes our problem. I am uneasy filing it under "Mac Mini" because there is absolutely no reason to believe that the problem is a misbehaviour of *one* of our Minis. In the old days, when help was geared to users rather than to pushing the sale of further Apple products, there used to be forums with titles like "Printing problems".

Thanks for the suggest, which didn't solve the problem — because it wasn't a Mac problem at all. Acrobat Reader was getting the colours wrong! Setting "Print as image" in the Print dialog extensions solved it.
    Resolved, case closed.

  • Colors not printing correctly for OfficeJet J4580

    Hi,
I have the OfficeJet J4580.  I recently changed the tri-color printer cartridge and now my colors aren't printing properly.  I just printed some postage for a package and instead of printing black it printed in red.  I then tried a different colored word document and the black printed fine, but the colors on the document are blurry and incorrect.  I thought maybe it was a bad replacement cartridge so I exchanged it with another brand new one and I'm still having the same problem.  Don't know what to do.

    Hello timdar,
All right, remove the cartridges and clean the copper plates of the cartridges and the corresponding part in the carriage manually, just in case there's some dirt or ink that is preventing the cartridges and printer to communicate properly. Use a cloth dampened with some water to clean these parts. You can also see if a copy or a test page from the printer itself shows any issues with the colours or the black. If you check the links in the post above you will find how to print the test page and what it should look like.
If a copy and test pages look all right but the prints from your computer still show these issues, make sure that the correct printer is set as the default printer in Printers&Faxes or Devices and Printers. If it is, power cycle the printer and reconnect the USB cable just in case... Last resort would be to reinstall the drivers for the printer, just delete the printer in Printers&Faxes and reconnect the USB cable.
If this doesn't solve it I would suggest that you return the cartridge to where you bought it. When you get a replacement, make sure that it's an original HP cartridge.
