How to get edited VOB files into iDVD?

Hello all,
This is actually a bunch of questions, not all of which are related to iDVD, but I didn't really know where else to post this. I have just ripped a DVD with MacTheRipper and have a bunch of VOB files in a VIDEO_TS folder that I would like to edit slightly and burn back to a DVD without any loss of quality if possible. I have that MPEG-2 component thingy, and I can open the VOB files in MPEG Streamclip, and even trim the movie and save as a new VOB, all within Streamclip.
1. First of all, is this newly created VOB compatible with iDVD, or do I need to export it to some other format?
2. If it's not compatible, which other format is best, and is there a way to convert it without loss of quality?
3. If no loss of quality is possible, what settings would get me minimum loss of quality?
4. If all else fails, is the newly created VOB compatible with any other DVD burning software, and what is the best one in your opinion?
Sorry for all the questions. I've learned from reading so many forums that one must be very specific indeed to get any kind of good advice. Thank you all in advance!

If your first paragraph is correct, then replacing the old VOB files with the new (edited) ones in the TS-folder will do the trick, if you have Toast. Just drag that TS folder to the Toast window and burn - job done.
If you don't you will have to go the long way: use MPEG Streamclip to convert the VOB files to DV and import into iMovie, then edit and send to iDVD.
Loss of quality? Possibly.

You might want to look at this one too.  Very easy to use and it doesn't require the Apple MPEG-2 playback component.

  • How to Get XDCAM Transfer files into FCP scratch disk locations

    Hi
I'm new to XDCAM transfer. I have XDCAM Browser and Transfer, latest versions. I have successfully imported into FCP, but I was surprised to see the footage stored in a default 'Movies' location. I thought, okay, I'll just change the import location in the XDCAM Transfer preferences to the FCP scratch disk location but then I realized that since I have multiple scratch disk locations I would be defeating the way FCP works, which is to to automatically go to the location with the room for the files.
I didn't have this problem with Panasonic P2.
Is there a way to import XDCAM files into FCP and have it go to the scratch disk locations already established in FCP?
    Thank you,
    Phil

    Hi Phil
Although XDCAM Transfer can be launched from within FCP (using the File > Import > Sony XDCAM.. command) the app itself is standalone and works outside of the control of FCP. It has no means of discovering and using the Capture Scratch location defined within FCP (because Apple do not provide any means for a third party app to do so).
The Panasonic P2 format is (can be) transfered directly using FCP's own Log and Transfer interface and so works wholly within FCP hence the target directory for imports honors the defined Capture Scratch location.
If you are working with the XDCAM EX series of camera's then you can use Sony's FCP Log and Transfer plugin (PDZK - LT1) instead of XDCAM Transfer to import your clips, and so achieve the functionality you are looking for. Although you lose some of the flexibility/functionality of the standalone XDCAM Transfer app (PDZK-P1) the benefit of handling everything directly with FCP's own interface might be preferable for you.
    Hope it helps

What is the file extension of this zipped folder.....zip or 7-Zip or something else?
If you have a ordinary .zip folder with a .jpeg photo inside it, you should be able to right click the zipped folder, select Extract All from drop down list, and then follow the instructions to get the unzipped folder that you open by double clicking it in order to see and use the photo.
Also, if this photo was edited in Photoshop and has a CMYK color profile, you will not be able to open it in Premiere Elements (any version).
Keep away from the Adobe Reader if all that you have is a zipped folder.
We will be watching for your progress.

  • How to get Imacon fff files into Camera Raw?

I have read previous string on this topic.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/311779
Solution was to use FlexColor to import fff files and then re-export as DNG and work in Camera RAW.
I have tried this using FlexColor 4.8.9 installed on both Vista(32 bit) and XP (32 bit) machines, both behave identically:
I succeeded in getting Flexcolor to run (it looks useful) but when in FlexColor main window and I click on "thumbnails button", the resulting flyout window offers "Save" but when I click on this I am offered "Batch Save" with Normal and Preview options: the DNG option is greyed out. Saving under Normal just delivers a tif file to the selected location.
Grateful to anyone who can point out what I have done wrong - or suggest a simple way to import Hasselblad/imacon scanner files in fff format into Adobe Camera Raw within CS6 under windows XP 32 bit. Thanks Bill

If we’re talking about Imacon SCANNER FFF files, then at least in forum posts from a few years back those aren’t supposed to work to convert to DNGs because the internal metadata is missing and Hasselblad doesn’t provide a way to do it.  Does it work to rename them to TIFF?  I couldn’t find a sample to test with.
    http://thedambook.com/smf/index.php?topic=613.0
I am able to see the Imacon 3f plug-in within CS6 Help / About Plug-ins… if I copy the CS5\Plug-ins \FlexColor Formats to CS6\REQUIRED\Plug-ins\FlexColor Formats for both 32-bit and 64-bit program paths.
The CS5 version of the plug-in was installed when I installed either FlexColor or Phocus, I forget which.

  • How to get audio book files into the audio books library?

I have recently imported some of my own audio books from cd to iTunes. They are now located in the music library, but I would like to have them in the audio book library. But no matter what I try I can't move them. Can anyone help me?
I have tried dragging the files and the folders, creating playlists and dragging them, importing files and folders, but nothing works. Is it impossible to do?
    Homebuild     Uses Windows Vista

It's easy to make audiobooks so long as you start off with AAC files (.m4a). If your books are in MP3 format, either rerip the book from CD into AAC or else convert MP3 to AAC. In iTunes there is an AAC choiced called "Spoken Podcast" that's great for making audiobooks (Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Importing).
Step-by-step instructions for making an audiobook are here:

  • Edit .VOB files? (dividing into chapters)

    Hi,
I don't know if this is the right Discussions forum, but as I guess that iMovie or iDVD will be dependant on QT for this one, I thought that I should start here...
I need to make a DVD out of some .VOB files. But those files are quite large and contain different chapters each. Not marked, so I have to do it before burning the DVD so they can be selected individuallly instead of playing the whole file.
I thought that importing the files into iMovie or QuickTime would allow me to cut them into pieces (or place chapter markers in iMovie). The trouble is... how can I import .VOB files into those programs?
Apparently, not directly. Then, if I have to reencode them, which program/setting should I use in order to lose the absolute minimum in quality (I used ffmpegX for some tests, but, for some reason, it provides 4:3 vrsions of the widescreen .VOB...), and usually at half the resolution of the original.... Preserving the maximum of quality, as said, is a priority.
Indeed, if I could just add chapter markers and send it to iDVD for some menu-editing, it would be the best solution.
    Thanks in advance.
    Amadeu

You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need Streamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, as well as the the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

After burning a successful DVD in iDVD out of FCPX, how can I see the settings it used?
So I finally burned a DVD out of a Apple Pro Res file into iDVD in PAL format. My question now is how can I find out what the exact burn properties were so that I can apply the same burn properties to a project in Compressor 4?
Is it possible to see what iDVD did?

I don't know any way you can interrogate iDVD to reveal settings to the extent that you can in a Compressor project. What you could do is open up the show's VOB in MPEG STreamclip, go to File and Reveal Stream Information; that will at least give you some rudimentary info like average bit rate. Perhaps someone, with more iDVD experience, can chime in here.
The broader question is why use Compressor at all if your current workflow is doing the job to your satisfaction?
The value of Compressor is that it gives you control over the many parameters that affect size quality.  and playability. The Compressor presets can give you a starting point for DVD delivery, Web, etc. From those presets, people typically experiment by adjusting the parameters until they get the desired results for their specific show. It's a little bit science and a little bit art. After experimenting, you may be able to get slightly better quality for the project you've successfully burned in iDVD by using Compressor and something likeToast…or maybe not.
    Good luck.

  • How to convert a PDF file into a full editable WORD file?

    Hi,
I tried to convert a pdf file into word but it is not fully editable. I can edit the title from the main page and that's it. The rest of the word document is saved as image. I tried editing teh pdf file but that one is not working either.
Please help on how to convert a PDF file into a full editable WORD file.
    Thank you

Not all PDF files are created equal.  When a PDF file is created with Adobe Tools it is usually "tagged" with information about the fonts the images, the layout etc...    This way when the PDF is saved to a new format like PPT or DOC then the results are usually usable.  However, if you have a PDF file that was not tagged for some reason then run the Accessibility tools on the PDF to acquire some basic tagging.  This may get you a better result.  Also if you have a PDF that is an image, then you may want to run OCR on it.

What do you mean by "adjust"? Editing of Photoshop images should be done in Photoshop.
Sure, it's possible to save individual layers from an image in Photoshop as inidvidual files in a variety of formats, but what's the point? You could just as easily import the layered file, then copy/paste it into a new layer for each layer in the image and use layer visibility to control which ones show. I don't think that will do you a lot of good, though, if you use adjustment layers or opacity controls on the layer in Photoshop.
