How to get HD iMovie video created on iPhone to iMac?

I'm a Final Cut Pro user.  I create over 100 videos a year in Final Cut (the majority Wedding Videos and TV commercials).  I've never used iMovie. After seeing the recent Apple holiday add, where some kid appears to be on his iPhone disinterested in Christmas with the family, but at the end of the day, unveils this amazing home video he created on the phone... I wanted to do the same thing (cheers, Apple marketing).  Turns out, it worked great.  I downloaded iMovie after creating all my clips all day and pretty easily created a simple highlight video with music and some fades here and there. 
Problem is, at 12 minutes long (give or take a few seconds), it won't upload to Youtube or Vimeo in HD.  Even though I have a 5GB upload limit on Vimeo.  It won't even save to my phone.  Not enough space apparently.  So I figured I'd just plug the phone into my computer and, like all things mac, it would magically just transfer to iMovie on my iMac that has over 1TB of free space.   Alas, no dice. 
I settled to upload it as a TERRIBLE resolution to Youtube... but I'd like to save my creation in HD.  I don't care where.  I just want to save it in HD.  I hope I'm just having a blonde moment and am simply missing somthing here.  Surely, if the phone is plugged into my iMac, shouldn't there be a way to save the video in 1080p to my computer? 
At that point, I'd like to erase the raw video files from my phone to conserve space. 
Any advice or help here would be appreciated.

Was puzled my self, but figgured something out. Like to share it:
1. iMovie on iPhone (ios 5 and later)  isn't compatible with iMovie 09 and 10 on the Mac (I gues not with iMovie08 either but I don't have that running anymore). So even if you share your file thru iTunes you end up with a file you cannot use.
2. What works for me: from iMovie on your iPhone share your projecty as a file. Choose the setting you like (720P, 1080P or another option).
3. After you have done that, (your project is visible in the filmroll in iPhoto on the iPhone ), connect your iPhone to your Mac. Start iMovie on the Mac , choose import and your iPhone shows up as a camera, with the clips you've shot including the project you made. Import the project.
The project will be sown as one clip (so not the individual sourceclip titles etc., so If you want to edit you need to cut and edit and whatever you want to do with it. and of course share it with Vimeo or something else.
