How to get iMovie HD 6 to save automatically to external hard drive?

And now: With regard to iMovie:
To get it to save automatically to my external hard drive, do I do it the same way that I would do it for iPhoto, by finding MOVIES in that left-hand vertical panel under "Computer"?
Is it that I take that little icon of the movie board and drag and drop it into my external hard drive? And the same with the Pictures folder? Drag both the icons of Picture and Movies to the External Hard Drive? Or what? I am assuming that I have to take it away from the Internal Hard drive or iPhoto and iMovie will find it there and place files there.
The thing is, can iPhoto and iMovie find the Pictures and the Movies folders in my External Hard Drive without being given a map in the form of a toggled set of instructions, like for iTunes? Are the programs like bloodhounds in that they can just smell where those folders are even if they (the bloodhounds) are blindfolded?
I have ideas for the little videos that I want to shoot, and I need iMovie to automatically put those files in my Big Dog 500 gig external hard drive.

When you first create a new iMovie Project you're
asked where to save it.
Choose the external drive to store the Project and
all the files will be stored there.
Thank you, QuickTime Kirk. Now I understand why there is no generic "Save Files To" in the Preferences.
This brings up another question now but I have not experimented with it in my iMac: I had old video clips from 2001 in my hard drive and yesterday I moved all my Photo and Audio files from Small Dog Ext. HD to Big Dog 500 gig Ext. HD. Since in 2001 I, of course, must have designated my old INternal hard drive as the place to save my work, does this mean that those clips are now "invisible" unless I manually go into Big Dog Ext. HD to see it?
In other words, by moving those 2001 video clips from my old iMac internal hard drive to my Small Dog 125 gig Ext. HD and now, last night, to my Big Dog 500 gig Ext. HD, is there no pathway from the iMovie application to the clips where they now are stored?
I didn't realize that such questions would ensue if I shift files from the internal hd to one external hd to another ext. hd.

Edit to say:
Well, now I know the answer. I clicked onto iMovie and clicked onto "Find An Old Project" (or whatever), and rather than finding my old 2001 video clips, I was given a window in which to identify where those clips are now stored. I clicked "Big Dog 500 gig" and was taken there, and from inside there I found my old 2001 clips.
So the answer is: The old clips that were moved from Site A to Site B were invisible at first request, but the option of defining the road map was presented. This presupposes that the person knows where they actually are, and since I do, there is no problem.
But of course in the future when I Save To Big Dog 500 gig, I can immediately access my new clips when clicking "Find Old Project."

  • How to get Windows 7 on Bootcamp to see an external hard drive

I run windows 7 on my desktop using parallels and an external hard drive shows up just fine, but when I run windows in bootcamp on my laptop the same external hard drive does not show up. Anyway to fix this or do I need to redo things and install parallels on my laptop to get to work?
I also notice that when that same external hard drive is connected to my desktop computer the drive letter changes. Sometimes time machine will grab the drive letter and the external gets assigned another drive letter which messes with my database programs that run in windows. Is there a way to fix the drive letter I've used in a path in those programs?
And if I do end up having to install parallels on my laptop what is the proper way to go about reformatting and getting ride of bootcamp and windows 7?

  • How do I get iMovie to import all movies from my external hard drive

Lifetime PC guy moving to Apple, so I'm new to Macs. Just bought the base version of the Mac Mini and loaded the most current OS version.
I have an external drive originally from my PC. I have video clips spread through out it. How do I have iMovie (or other tool) scan through the entire drive to select and import my video clips? I don't want to do it one by one.

You can use the following instructions(iTunes, iPhoto) to move the libraries to the external drive.
You can also drag your home folder to the external drive in the Finder and then change the home property for your user account in the NetInfo Manager, which is in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, if you need more space. When changed, this property should be along the lines of /Volumes/externaldrive/Users/yourname. If this is done, you should create a second account in the Accounts pane of System Preferences in case you run into trouble or the drive isn't available.
Additional space can be freed up by deleting items in the /Library/Packages/ and /Library/Printers/ folders you don't use, and running Monolingual to delete unnecessary languages. Don't use Monolingual to delete any architectures on an Intel Mac; the PowerPC architecture is necessary for Rosetta applications to run.

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

  • How do I get the pictures from my iPhoto on my external Hard Drive to show up in the already existing iPhoto on my MacBook?

I have an early 2008 MacBook. I had been using iPhoto on this MacBook until I purchased an iMac in 2011, at which time I copied my iPhoto Library from my MacBook to my iMac. Then I realized that my pictures and music were consuming the memory on my iMac, so I moved iPhoto and my iTunes LIbrary to an external Hard Drive. Now I am in a situation where I do not have access to my iMac, but will need to use my MacBook as my main computer for the next year. So, I have my iPhoto on an external hard drive and I plug it into my MacBook and see the iPhoto Library folder, but when I click on it, it opens up the old iPhoto that is still existing on my MacBook and will not show any of the new pictures?! At first I thought it wasn't able to show up anything because my MacBook was running two operating systems behind what my iMac was when I was running my iPhoto Library from that computer. So, I upgraded to OS X 10.7.5 and upgraded the existing iPhoto on my MacBook to iPhoto '11 version 9.4.3. However whenever I plug in the external hard drive and click on the iPhoto Library folder to open it up, it is still just opening up the already existing iPhoto on the MacBook (with my older pictures) rather than the iPhoto on the hard drive (with my newer pictures). How can I access my pictures that are on my external hard drive?

Thank you for your advice. I followed your directions, but came up with the same results. However, I did discover that whenever I open up the iPhoto Library that is already existing on my MacBook a certain set of pictures shows up. But then when I open up the iPhoto Library from the Hard drive another set of pictures shows up. BUT not ALL of my pictures are showing up on the iPhoto Library from the hard drive. At least the last two years of pictures are not showing up?! Actually, it appears that all the pictures are there from when I started using iPhoto about 5 years ago up until around the time that I got my iMac desktop computer and started using that (2 years ago). I have noticed that more recent videos I have made are showing up in a folder on the hard drive, but will not appear when I open up iMovie?! Any ideas on how to access my pictures from the last 2 years off of the hard drive???

  • How do I get my MacBook Pro to recognize my Toshiba external hard drive?

How do I get my MacBook Pro to recognize my Toshiba external hard drive? I'm working on transferring my music from our home computer to my new laptop and I already got all my music onto the hard drive but now, when I plug it into my MacBook Pro, it doesn't recognize it. There isn't an icon that pops up and nothing happens at all. The blue light on the hard drive that indicates that it knows it is plugged into something comes up but that's about it. Someone told me I might have to "format" it but I don't know what that means and I don't know how to do it. I just want to get my music from the hard drive to my laptop so please help!

I don't know about your first question... I went to finder, preferences, then general but I didn't see anything for the hard drive.
Huh, in the Finder menu, Preferences, you will see this:
Nope, disk utility cannot see it. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in but it still won't recognize it.puter that's a Mac...
If DU cannot see it then the preferences is just an academic exercise.
If this is a USB drive then as mentioned above you may need a powered USB hub since there may not be enough power from the USB to run the drive.  What else do you have plugged into the USB ports?  If there's some stuff you can unplug it then do it and see if your drive mounts.
What do you mean from a Windows machine? It's a Toshiba hard drive and I put my music on it from my home computer that's a Mac...
Which is all I wanted to know, i.e., whether the drive came from a Winows machine.  So it's been formatted and created on a mac.  Therefore it should mount on this other mac machine.  So it most likely is a power problem.

Hi, Can anyone recommended software to import dvd to iMovies. I need to import about a dozen homemade DVD's and edit them into a single DVD comprising the 'best bits'. How best can I do this. I have an external hard drive available for the job

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
If you are running Lion or later:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion even though that has it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • HP Simple Save 2 TB External Hard Drive (3.5-inch, USB 2.0) Broken HELP!

OK so I've searched around for a solution to my problem but have found no answer so I'm trying here.
I've had my HP Simple Save 2 TB External Hard Drive for a few of years now, it's served me great, I used it for storing all my photos but the usb connector has snapped off from the small CD drive inside the casing.
This has simply been through use, it was working fine, not wobbly or mistreated in any way, it must have just came to the end of it's life and now I can't hook it up to my computer to get the photos, I'm desperate to get them back, wedding photos, birthdays etc most of you must know how I'm feeling.
So I looked up a few solutions, one was to buy a USB-to-IDE/SATA adapter and use that to connect to the computer, well it works as far as recognising that a device is connected but won't load the files or folders to view.
As I've looked around apparently the small CD drive that's inside the case has software that my computer automatically loads? Now this is where I'm lost, how do I manage to get this to work?
I'm almost at my wits end, as far as looking every single day on Amazon and eBay to buy a new one to transfer the CD drive onto the broken one to load it up and get my photos back, IF that would even work, I'm not sure.
So if you have any suggestions/help please please get in touch, thanks.

In case anyone it´s interested I restore the autorun.inf into the drive and the problem was that I put all the toshiba software into one folder to be more organized. As soon as I place it back again outside the folder (in the root of the hard drive). It grab the canvio image.

  • How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive?

How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive and keep the new iTunes library on the External Hard Drive. I have all the media and playlist and .xml .itl files, just want the iTunes to recognise the content.
I backedup my iTunes content by dragging to External Hard Drive. Formatted and reinstalled OS. My iTunes content is so large, that I wish for the Library and content to remain on the External Hard Drive. I have all the music files and playlists, I just cannot get the iTunes application to display all the content. Hoping to Not have to drag and drop all the content to be recopied into new iTunes organised files.
Troubleshooting this by researching other conversations on the web, I have come stuck for a solution. One Troubleshoot told me to hold down the Command key and then lauch iTunes and a dialogue box will appear to Choose a new library, however when I try this, no Dialogue box appear to give me the option!?

It sometimes has that funny switch symbol on it too.

Have old MacBook Pro running tiger 10.4 want to save date to external hard drive and buy newer MacBook and still use same drive. Any suggestions, most  WD drives say nothing about os tiger 10.4. The OS compatibility  is much newer on the data.  Totally confused. Not a computer person.

I haven't checked reviews recently but there's a difference between bare drives and drives with enclosures.  Western Digital made some of the most reliable drives last time I checked, though the enclosures weren't all that great.  It is convenient to get both in one package but I usually buy a highly rated enclosure and then put a highly rated drive in it myself.  OWC sells some good enclosures but if they put a so-so drive inside of it then the package is only as good as its weakest component.  If you get a package from them, ask them what drive is inside (some vendors have no idea what's inside  -  went to an Apple Store recently and they couldn't tell me what was inside some of their Apple brand enclosures).  My first thought if buying a new drive would be to buy a OWC enclosure with a WD drive, but chek around because I may be out of date.
10 years ago Seagate was one of the best drives. Now they rate poorly in reviews.

How do I move data on time machine from one external hard drive to another?

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. Turn Time Machine OFF in its preference pane while copying the volume.

how can i use the airport time capsule as a external hard drive?

Why do you recommend not place things like iTunes libraries or photo libraries on the drive? It was what I am looking for...
I suggest that you ask the experts over in the iPhoto Support Community about their opinions on placing an iPhoto or Aperture library on the Time Capsule....even if you plan to use a wired connection for your Mac and the Time Capsule.
But, if Terrence Devlin answers, be prepared for a lecture about why you should not ever do this.
If you place the iTunes library on the Time Capsule, be prepared for iTunes to give you messages about not being able to find the library.
In addtion, LaPastenague has the answer for you in a nutshell......corruption problems.
Bottom line....the Time Capsule is for your backups.....not "everyday" files and especially not libraries.
