How to get iOS 5.0 loaded on Mac iTunes?

I am unable to get 5.0, iTunes, says it is up to date with 4.2.1. My iPad updated to 5.0, but can't get 3G iPhone updated! I don't know why laptop doesn't automatically update itself to 5.0. I tried 'check for available downloads'. Not computer savvy!

iTunes is not a misnomer at all, really. iTunes is an application that runs on a computer and is used, when spoken of in relation to an iPhone, to update and sync content to that device. The operating system for the iPhone is iOS, not iTunes. There is an "iTunes" app on the iPhone, which is for purchasing from the iTunes Store.
So there is no 'iTunes-iPad", "iTunes-iPhone", etc. as such (not in any meaningful way, in any case). The only differences are the computer operating system on which iTunes is intended to run, Mac or Windows, and the version number of the iTunes application, the current being iTunes 10.6.3. The OP is referring to the version of iOS, not of iTunes.

Apple has reasons why they only let developers have access to beta versions. Beta versions are very buggy, and are not very good with everyday use on primary devices. Developers are only allowed to have access to betas because it lets them make their apps ready to be used and compatible with iOS 5 by the time the final release comes out.

Very likely since yu really have a 2G iPod. Those only go to 4.2.1. If your is an 8 or 16 GB one it is a 2G since Apple only made 32 and 64 GB 3G iPods. A 32 GB one can be either. See:

Apple normally does not get involved in handling lost objects like this. Since a real name is not installed it will be much more difficult.
You can try contacting Apple support at the US number, assume you are US going to BWI from the listing: http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 and explain the situation and see if they offer any suggestions.

The iphone is not storage/backup device.
The sync is one way - computer to iphone.
The only exception is itunes purchases. File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
You should copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

In iTunes go to the Help menu in the upper menu bar. Then click on iTunes Help. Then on Sync your iPod, iPhone or iPad and follow the instructions.

If you are in the US or Canada you can download purchased music from the Purchased link in the iTunes store.
Otherwise if the disk drive is OK in your Old PC you can remove it and put it in a USB drive enclosure and then use it as an external disk on your new PC, then you copy the muisc from there.

You need to obtain a black disk with Mac OS X 10.5 Leapard written on it.
It should have a big X on the disk.
They can be obtained from eBay or Amazon. You may find some online stores selling it. It's not going to be cheap.
If you already have a copy, then great.

I would recommend installing more memory to your iBook at least to bring it to 1.5GB
That's an extra 1GB, even though the minimum requirment is 512MB, its going to be a liittle sluggish with just that memory.

And if you are a member of the iOS Developer Program, you should know that you can't just give beta software to your friends. You would also know that the iOS 8 developer seed is absolutely not ready for general use. It's given to developers so that they can begin to program for the new features and that they're strongly cautioned not to install it on any device they want to actually use.
The bottom line is that if you are eligible for this seed, you have access to all the information you need on how to get the seed and use it. If you don't have access to this information, then you're not eligible to legally obtain the seed, and probably really shouldn't be messing with it.
