How to get iTunes to recognize iPod

My iPod shows up in windows but not in iTunes. How can i get my iPod to show up in iTunes?

Yes, resetting it while it's connected may get it recognized.
If you're having the non-recognition problem frequently, you may have USB issues on your computer. Try connecting to one of the ports on the rear of your computer. Also see these tips:

  • Cant get iTunes to recognize iPod   can't do a restore

    Hello,
After having the iPod Touch4 for one week i can no longer get iTunes to recognize it when i connect it.
1/ The USB cable is fine
2/ I have completed all troubleshooting steps suggested by apple support
    3/ I have tried this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdSLzIQTxqE
    and this one - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pVbIeSfvfI
4/ I have uninstalled and re-installed the latest iTunes
So, my next step was to do a reset back to the original factory settings (even the ipod is only a week old). When i click on restore in iTunes (because it recognizes the iPod is in recovery mode) i get the message - 'the iPod software update server can not be contacted. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active or try again later.
I have now gone through the troubleshooting section on the apple website with this issue and now can not even restore the iPod.
Can anyone else give me any advice as i can only think i am going to have to end up taking the thing back for a swap/refund which is pretty frustrating when it worked perfectly for a week and then started playing up for no apparent reason.......

You did not specify what Apple troubleshooting you tried.  It is easy to miss Apple articles.

  • How do I get iTunes to recognize iPod, post aborted sync?

    Here is the rundown:
My friend who owed me money recently offered me his 4th gen. 20 GB iPod as a form of repayment, which I obviously accepted. This is the kind of iPod I would have wanted anyway. It had no songs on it as my friend was smart enough to clear them all off. However the iPod was formatted in Windows and as a staunch Mac lover and someone who wants to update the iPod to the freshest system it can handle, I plan to reformat it into Mac format so I can do this. Problem was I got ahead of myself and when iTunes finally recognized the iPod (battery was super low as my friend misplaced his charge cord), I approved it to sync to my laptop's iTunes library BEFORE I reformatted it to Mac. Long story short 3 songs synced out of several hundred, I halt all syncing processes so I could reformat it to Mac system first.
Now I can't get it to recognize anyplace, neither in iTunes nor in Finder. I erased and re-downloaded the iPod updater program about 5 times to see if it would shock it back to its senses, done about 4 iPod resets and now all I have to show for my efforts is a 20GB iPod with 3 songs and still in Windows format. How do I get it to where I want it to go from here. Every time I have tried to run the supposed iPod updater it locks up and stops responding, and to really rub it in refuses to force quit. Any ways to straighten this out would be welcomed.

First of all, I think the first time you sync an iPod that's formatted for Windows on a Mac, the sync process reformats it for Mac. You can check what it is now by looking for the iPod with Disk Utility. If it's Mac OS Extended, it's formatted for Mac already.
Also, there is no current iPod updater app these days. iTunes handles it through the Restore button. If you are not able to use the latest iTunes because of your Mac, I can understand. The latest version of iTunes should run with 10.3.9 or later, if the hardware can handle it.
You said the battery was low so let it recharge for a while.
You should also reset the iPod. It's part of the 5Rs, which you should go through as the starting point for iPod trouble-shooting.

  • How to get iTunes to recognize an Italian album (not as Spanish)

I have a number of albums by my favorite Italian artists (Eros Ramazzotti, Nek, Laura Pausini, et al.). These artists habitually release their Italian-language CDs first, and then record and release the same CD (i.e., song list) in Spanish.
However, when here in the States I insert the original Italian-language albums, about half the time the album is given the Spanish title and song list, which irks my sense of order. Does anyone know how to get things right, short of my manually having to type in each album's song list? (Peeved: I'm moving to the Apple/Mac world form the PC world, and Windows Media Player at least gives me a choice between the Italian title/songlist and the Spanish one).
Thanks in advance for any advice.

iTunes does not recognize cameras, it only recognizes iDevices.
Windows computers could careless that it's a phone or iPod or whatever, they will only recognize it as a camera.
Plug the device into the computer.
    Lauch iTunes.
Sync whatever you like to it.
If you have issues, clearly explain exactly what is happening.

    It will be fine.
Restarting the computer will not delete any music on the computer.

  • Can't get iTunes to recognize iPod

Anyway, I've been getting that picture of the file with an exclamation mark on it. When I put it in my computer, it won't recognize my player at all, just locks up. I reset it, I put it in safe disk mode, and take it out. I'm trying to do a restore on the thing to wipe it...but that's proving difficult when iTunes won't recognize it.

I don't know which iPod you have, but go through the 5R's. If you can't get it to be recognized by your computer and you continue to get the folder with exclamation, it is likely that the hard drive in the iPod has become faulty.
If iTunes does not recognize it, but your computer does, one more thing you can try is to reformat the iPod as if it was an external drive (use the full format). If that works, try iTunes again to see if you can use Restore.

Let me re-phrase an earlier question that got no response (sob):
I have been using a mini for years, but the battery is nearly dead, so my husband gave me his brand new video Nano. When I connect it to my computer, iTunes doesn't recognize it. Any tips would be deeply appreciated.

  • How to get itunes to recognise ipod?

I have just got the original ipod touch, but the only problem is, whenever i connect it into my computer to put music on it, iphoto recognises the ipod but not itunes? Please help!!

Try importing them as AAC files (32kbps or 64kbps at most. Any more is overkill for an audiobook.)
Once it's an AAC file, try renaming the actual file (should have an .m4a extension) so that it now has an .m4b extension.
You should be able to properly classify it as an audiobook.
