How to get links to open in new tabs?
How do I make links open in a new tab rather than opening another browser? This also happens when I check gmail inbox or if I highlight something to "Search in Google". How do I get all this to open in the current active browser? I've checked the preferences and didn't see anything to fix this. Thanks in advance.
I use SafariStand for this. It has a preference "Open Target Link in New Tab" along other cool enhancements (and some unexplainable ones).
This is one of those Safari add-ons that uses SIMBL, so if you don't like the prospect of possibly having to update it manually in buried folders every time Safari makes a big change, you might not want to install it.

Cant Get Links To Open In New Tab Instead Of New Window !!!!
Alright I must be missing something. I have done the following:
Safari -->
Preferences -->
GENERAL
Open Links From Applications --> In New Tab (Selected)
TABS
All Boxes Are Checked
Everytime I click on a link online the page opens in a new window. How can I get the links to open as a new tab within the window?
Thank YouI was thinking of switching over from Firefox myself but this minor annoyance is something I never had to deal with on FF and it may be enough to make me switch back. I'm a regular digg user and whenever I click on a story it opens up in a new window which is off-centre and not maximized and no matter how many times I fix it the next time I open a link its like that again. These are pretty basic functions of a browser so if Safari can't even handle these properly then there's no future in it for me. Also can't add different search engines to the built in search bar, lame.

I'm using Firefox 8.0 on Suse 11.4 today is 11/28/11 the past 24 hours I've been experiencing this: I always try to right click on links and open in new tab, lately when I do so and move the cursor into the dialog box the box disappears. Also if I online shop say for clothing, if I want to change size's when I click the button to do so nothing happens when I want to scroll down and pick a different size, (I can hi-light the size and click on it then when the window scrolls back up the default size is still there. This isn't consistent with all web sites.
You can middle-click a link to open the link in a new tab.
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

I went to Tools>Options>Tabs and entered a check mark next to the first entry, "Open New Windows in a New Tab Instead" but it still does not open a new tab each time I click on a link or one of my favorites. It used to way back in earlier versions of Firefox but hasn't for the past few iterations...am I doing something wrong or do I need to activate something else within Firefox?

That option only controls pages that would open in a new window based on the code on the website page you are visiting.
Firefox's default is to open a link or a Bookmark in the currently selected tab.
You have some options to have links and/or Bookmarks open in a new tab:
*middle-click the link or Bookmark (middle-click = press the mouse scroll wheel)
*CTRL+left-click the link or Bookmark
*right-click the link or Bookmark and choose "Open in New Tab"
*install one of the following and set the options to automatically open links or Bookmarks in a new tab:
**Tab Utilities Lite: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-utilities-lite/
**Tab Utilities (a few more options than the "Lite" version): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-utilities/
**Tab Mix Plus (a heavyweight tab utility extension): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plus/

I'm running Firefox 7.0.1 on Windows 7
I upgraded AVG to 2012.0.1831
Now when I open a new tab it opens to the AVG secure search page
This is not a problem but it irritates me
How do I get a new tab to open to a blank page?You can look at one of these extensions:
* NewTabURL : https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/newtaburl/
* New Tab Homepage : https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-homepage/ -
I get redirects always in current open page. If I click a link and say open in new tab or new window it does not redirect. I've noticed explorer is now advertising built in software to eliminate someone hijacking their browser. If I have to keep searching for tools to clean registry's and browser issues -- I may have to switch back to Explorer or Chrome. Lately my Firefox which I'm most used to is driving me nuts... Why can't you guys provide a tool that cleans the adware, hijacks, etc off the browser? I even downloaded the latest version and I'm still having the same problem-- seems the hijack to redirect remains......
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

I DON'T KNOW THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM, I JUST THOUGHT THAT IF THERE IS A WAY TO OPEN A NEW TAB EACH TIME YOU ENTER A NEW WEBSITE WITHOUT OVERRIDING THE PREVIOUS ONE. YOU WOULDN'T HAVE TO REMEMBER TO ENTER THE PLUS SIGN EACH TIME YOU WANT TO OPEN A NEW WEBSITE.
The setting in Tools > Options > Tabs: "New pages should be opened in": "a new tab/window" is for links that specify a target window to open the link.
That option allows to divert such links to a new tab instead of a new window.
For links that do not specify a target use a middle-click or hold down Ctrl and left-click the link or use the right-click context menu to open the link in a new tab or window.<br />
Left-click a JavaScript link to avoid getting a blank tab. -
Cannot open a new tab have to get a link and open in new tab.
I cannot open a new tab either by clicking on the button on the tool bar, going to File/Open New Tab or CTRL T. I think this happened after I upgraded to the newest version of Firefox. The only way I can get a new tab is to click on a bookmark or link and right click and select Open in New Tab. Very frustrating.
HollyThis issue can be caused by the Ask<i></i>.com toolbar (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions)
Your system details show that toolbar in the user agent as AskTbFXTV5/3.11.3.15590

All links are opening in new tabs. How do I change this so links open in the same tab?
This started with upgrade to FF 10. I've tried switching Tabs options on and off but everything keeps opening in new tabs rather than switching to the link in the open window. This leads to many tabs that I have to chase to get to the page I wanted to open.
Thanks in advance for your advice.Maybe some of the extensions are causing a problem. I suggest you try using
* safe Mode <-- clikable link for instructions --
* do NOT make changes in the first window,just click on continue
* use only the default firefox theme
* if you continue to have problems; then whilst still in safe mode disable all plugins
It is also worth trying to ensure all extensions are uptodate
* see troubleshooting extensions and themes
You may have to try using the reset controls and toolbars option from safe-mode BUT that may loose customisations that you have made. -
I open firefox and type in CNN(or any other item). When the link appears I click on it. Instead of opening in the existing tab, firefox opens a new tab.
Thank you for this information. I love learning new things!

For example, when I'm in Flickr and I'm looking at an album, I click on a picture and it opens a new tab for that picture. When I click on the arrow to see the next picture in the series, it proceeds to open yet another tab, and so on. It's not difficult to have tabs that span the width of my screen in no time at all.
This should help:
1. Go to: Tools > Options > Tabs
2. There is a section at the top that says 'Open links that open in a new window in:' and then a drop-down menu
3. In the drop-down menu, select the 'Current Tab' Option
4. Click 'OK'

How do I stop links from opening in new tabs
Any link I click on opens a new tab. I want them to open in the same tab
Hello,
You need to check your mouse or mouse settings because if you click on a link with middle mouse it would open a new tab, if you checked your hardware and settings but the problem still the same, go to:
Tools > Options > Tabs > Open links that open in a new window and change the option to new window.
If you have the Tab Mix Plus addon installed then Tools > Tab Mix Plus options > Links.
Sincerly,

How can I click a link to open a new tab without automatically switching to the new tab?
I use Ixquick as my search engine. When the search result comes up, every time I click a link, Firefox creates a new tab and changes the focus from the search results page to the page for the link I clicked.
I want to have a new tab created , but I want to stay on the search results page to be able to continue clicking other tabs of interest.
I'm new to Foxfire and this functionality was very useful to me when I used Internet Explorer.
Any help will be appreciated.Hi Kathy
