How to get more disk space

I exported a project out of FCP 7 as a Quicktime movie. I wanted to import it into FCP X to do some color correction and add some graphics, etc. Before exporting out of 7 we had to delete some unused clips to free up about 60 Gig of space on the hard drive because we were getting "Out of disc space." The export went fine, but now as we try to import into FCP X we are suddenly out of disc space again and the movie won't import. Any suggestions to free up disc space in X so we can import the file? We are working on an iMac with a huge hard drive. It's only about 15 months old (the iMac).

Most of what is eating up your hard drive are render files. Every time you make a change in your storyline, more render files are created. Plus, FCPX has almost unlimited undo, so... it accumulates render files.
You can delete unused render files at any time by selecting a project and selecting File > Delete Project Render Files, or in newer versions of FCPX, you can select an event (or with the currently active event) and select File > Delete Event Render Files.
You can select the All Render Files option for projects that have been completed (or currently on hold.)
You can control the accumulation of render files by going into Preferences > Playback > Rendering and turning off Background Render. Use Control-R to render current selections, or Control-Shift-R to render all manually.

NO notebook is a mass storage device, so dont try to turn it into one, it doesnt work that way.
Unless youre using it every couple weeks, its static data and should be on an external HD
In the case of a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro Retina with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace. You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.

Back in the 90's, BT (British Telecom) had a 80+ node OPS cluster build with Pyramid MPP hardware. They had a dedicated store of scsi disks for replacing failed disks - as there were disk failure fairly often due to the number of disks. (a Pryamid MPP chassis looked like a Xmas tree with all the scsi drive LEDs, and BT had several)
In my experience - one should rather expect a drive failure sooner, than later. And have some kind of contingency plan in place to recover from the failure.
The use of symbolic links instead of striping the filesystem protects from the complete loss of the enchilada if a volume member fails, but it does not reduce the risk of loosing data.
I would rather buy a single ticket for the drive failure lottery for a root drive, than 2 tickets in this case. And using symbolic links to "offload" non-critical files to the 2nd drive means that its lottery ticket prize is not a non-bootable server due to a toasted root drive.

I need to figure out the available disk space for a particular disk before I can write my file to a directory in the disk. I do this to avoid unsufficient disk space problem in my program. May I know how can I do this in Java ? I look at the API function for java.io.File class but there isn't any function to check disk space. I would appreciate any help from fellow Java developers. You cannot do this in purely platform independent way.
You can use System.exec to run native OS utilities like df and parse the output, but then you have to knwo which platform your program is running on, or build in some automatic detection of OS and have corresponding native calls for each likely one.
BTW. even if you get a number of free bytes on disk that's larger than the size of the file you want to write this is no guarantee that there will be enough diskspace for your file, because another process might write to the disk in the meantime. So you will have to do proper error handling and recover gracefully from the disk full sitution no matter what.

The directory itself is not taking space (It actually does but in most cases you can neglect its size). It is files that it has that take space. Also, the more files you create the more space gets allocates from the media that holds them. And the last, the media (Hard Drive, Floppy, or other) has free space, not directory. That is how all OS's that I know about work.

What do i need to do in order to increase the work space in Crystal. My report has around 80 columns that needs to be fitted in one page.
With my current settings I have MO Live Meeting document writer as a default printer but it can accomodate only 36" (width) of work space , that is about 50 columns.
Pls let me know how can i increase the work space to have those 80 columns.

Here is what I do when I need to do an extremely wide report (for a data extract for example...)
#1) Go to Control Panel > Printer and Faxes
#2) File > Server Properties
#3) Place a check in the "Create a new form" box and enter a name for new page size.
#4) In the lower section... "Form description (measurements)" set the width & height properties to whatever you need. (200in X 200in seems to be the max that virtual printers will knowledge.)
I have a 200 X 200 that works with the Microsoft XPS Document Writer and Acrobat.

You can move your libraries to an external drive (see Ralph's post) - please note: in order for the OS to operate properly, it needs an absolute minimum of 10 - 15 GB of empty space available at all times - more is better. First, let us get some info on your computer. Boot up your computer in Panther. Then go to Apple Menu > About this Mac. Click the button More Info. This opens up the System Profiler. The top item in the sidebar is Hardware. Click on this if it not already selected. On the right side under the title Hardware Overview is a list of specs. Copy this and paste it in your response to this post. That will give me the basic information about your computer.
Now to some of your questions. Your computer has two kinds of memory: 1. RAM memory, is like your brain. It holds things in your mind while you process information. When you stop thinking about it the information is not there anymore. 2. Your Hard Disk Drive, is like a notebook in which you write down the stuff you think about. It keeps a permanent record. If the notebook is not big enough it soon fills up and you can't store information anymore.
That is about where you are. You need to increase disk space. There are two basic ways to do that. 1. Remove stuff from your Hard Disk Drive (HDD). That increases the amount of free space, but it does not increase the capacity of the HDD. The leads us to the second way. 2. Replace the HDD. You cannot make it bigger, you have to buy a bigger drive and install it in your computer. That will give you more disk space. The System Profiler will tell you how big your drive is. Just under Hardware in the sidebar is ATA. That is your hard drive. Click on it. On the right side it gives you all the information. Note particularly under Macintosh HD the heading Capacity. It tells you how much your drive can hold. Note, too Available, which tells you how much empty space you have on your drive.
When I upgraded to Panther I thought I was also increasing my "disk" space capacity? True? Or am I confusing myself more?
Panther is an Operating System. It is what makes your computer function. It makes your computer able to run applications. It is installed on your HDD, and adds power to your computer, but it does not add disk space. Only a Hard Drive does that.

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
1. See Lion's Storage Display.
2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.

You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.

You can look at the material stored and see what you don't need and delete. But a better way is to get an external hard drive and move large quantities of material to the external storage. That will free up internal storage capacity.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:

You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.

I am using Final Cut Pro on a Mac OX10. When I try to export a Final Cut Pro project to QuickTime I get a message saying that I do not have enough disk space available. How do I free up additional disk space? (I am a little confused because I have already deleted more disk space than I am current trying to use)

Might try restarting the computer, just to refresh the system's memory... be sure you empty the trash too... the new space won't show up until you do.
