I have just bought a 6630 model and am appalled at the software. In the past Nokia wiped the floor with Ericcson because its software was so simple and quick to use. Now I have to go through all these menus to get to what I want. For instance, why do we have to keep pressing 'Open' and 'Change' options when it is obvious we want to use these functions. Any way to customise these and turn them off?

How to get rid of the iTunes V5 and revert to V4.9

A mass of postings has been prompted by the launch of the appalling iTunes Version 5. This has clearly not been beta tested (or the testers need sacking), and must have caused immense damage to Apples reputation. How they can sit there like a rabbit in the headlights, and not even revoke the launch of V5 until theyve sorted it, is quite beyond me.
Most postings are desperate pleas for help, followed by suggested courses of action to persuade V5 to work. Some of these are quite complex for the average user and, whilst they have been a salvation for many readers, appear not to have worked for others. If, like me, you think that enough is enough, and just want to get back to V4.9, then here is my suggestion.
V4.9 is still currently available, but the installer refuses to run if youve installed V5, because it tells you that A later version of iTunes is already on this machine. Installation cannot continue. Attempts to uninstall V5 via Windows Add or Remove Programs appear to have got some users into serious difficulties, and I certainly wasnt prepared to attempt it, so here is what worked for me. Please bear in mind that it only works if you Saved, the V5 Installer, rather than just running it without saving. Bear in mind also that you will have to recreate any custom Play Lists, and that the Purchased Music record will be empty (the music wilI still be there though, which is all that matters.
I offer no promises that this will work for you.
First I played safe by backing up on DVD my iTunes folder from My Music although, with hindsight, I didnt need to. If you want to be safe, but cant burn a DVD, then just open a new file in My Music called iTunes Backup, and copy everything to there.
Then I did Start/Search for iTunesSetup. If you find more than one, then go for the one whose date coincides with the day you were lured into doing the upgrade. That event should be scarred on your memory.
I double clicked on the offending installer, and encountered a request to know whether I wanted it to Repair or Uninstall. I chose Uninstall, and it worked. I then dealt it the final deathblow, by deleting that actual iTunesSetup program.
I then went to www.techspot.com and typed iTunes into the Search box at top right of the Home Page. This will take you to a page offering Apple iTunes 4.9 for Windows Download. Click on that, and proceed with the download, using the Save option, before running it.
I was then able to run the new Installer, and iTunes was up and running, but of course, my Music Library was empty.
Leaving the iTunes main screen open, I went into My Music / iTunes and opened the iTunes Music folder to reveal the various Artist folders. I then reduced the size of that window, so that I could get at the iTunes window behind it.
In the iTunes Music window (the one with all the Artist folders now displayed) I did Select All, from the Edit drop-down menu, and then did a simple drag and drop into the large right-hand iTunes window. Note: there is no need to open the individual Artists folders. iTunes will see to that.
Seconds later I was playing my music, and actually went into the Music Store, and bought some more (not that Apple deserve my custom).
I shall not be upgrading again, until I have seen plenty of approval notices in the media.

Paul--you are a life-saver!! Worked great. I did have to look around to make sure I was getting 4.9 instead of 4.7 (even when the file was named 4.9 at techspot.com), but I finally got the right file, did the install as you suggested, and everything is now fine. One note, though, that I haven't seen mentioned in any of this thread: when I first tried to open up iTunes after getting back to 4.9, the following message appeared: "The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." I merely went to the old .itl file that was created when I did the update to iTunes 5, renamed it, moved it over to my now new 4.9, and iTunes opened fine. My library was a few days out of date, because of the few days' lag from the time I did the iTunes update, but that was easily taken care of, and everything's now working fine. Thanks again!!!

How to get rid of "Computer" in Open and Save dialogs

Is this new? I don't remember that before the last or second-last OS update the computer's name appeared, above the mounted volumes, in the left panel of the Open and Save dialogs.
Note that in the Finder windows, the computer doesn't appear, as set in the Finder's Preferences.
So obviously my question is: How to remove the computer's name from the Open and Save dialogs' left panel?

Alot probably was installed when you downloaded/installed some software from the internet. Unfortunately, it is becoming more and more common for these kinds of "extras" (toolbars, security scanners, etc.) to be added to your browser/system/desktop when adding or updating other software, some from very well-know software vendors. You must carefully read information before downloading any "free" software and be very alert during the install process for any opportunity to opt-out of "extras" being installed.

Updated Firefox, now when I open a new tab, there is two seperate google search bars; how do I get rid of the unnecessary search bar?

I updated Firefox, and after I restarted it, when I opened a new tab, I found that I now had two Google search bars: one next to where you type web addresses, and one right above my pinned sites (or my frequently visited sites). I'm just trying to:
1. Figure out why it is necessary to have two of the pretty much identically useful search bars when I really only need one (or can physically type Google in)
and
2. How do I get rid of the unnecessary second Google search bar above my frequently visited and therefore pinned sites.
If you have any ideas of how to remove this annoying addition, I would appreciate it.

I am guessing that you installed an extension, related to "new tab", which added the first search bar. Firefox 31 in includes a search bar for the "new tab" page; so now you have two.
Take a look at that extension (Options or Preferences) to see how to disable ones of those 2 search bars. Or see if an update has been released for that extension, specifically for Firefox 31, with an option to disable the search bar.

Firefox 4 and later versions use a new build-in home page named about:home with a Google search bar on it.
That about:home page only shows some snippets and has a button to restore the previous session if applicable.
If you want a home page with extras then set another page as the home page like www.google.com as used in Firefox 3 versions.

You can hide that container or set the browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl pref to an empty String on the about:config to make Firefox use some default snippets.

I have tried the printer with my laptop (not updated) and everything is fine. It's just the beautiful 27" Imac that can no longer print.

Might be a corrupted printer preference file ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:

Click Go
Move the com.apple.PrinterPrefs.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac, restart the printer...

I usually work in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign, but am creating two newsletter templates in Pages for a colleague, since it will be easier for her. But, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to get rid of the main text box in the back of the page that is driving me crazy. I just want a nice blank page that I can do whatever I want with. AND, I can't figure out how to select things so that I can move them, like shapes and text boxes. Some things seem to move fine, then other things just sit there. I am at the end of my rope!!!

Hi, Dylan. Welcome to Discussions.
If you're referring to the area where you just start typing when you open a new blank document, you can't get rid of it. But you also don't have to use it. You can insert text boxes and size and position them as you desire. Just be sure they're defined as Fixed on Page. When one is full and you want to continue it to another page (or to the side), click in the blank blue box on the lower right side of the text box. That will create another box and your overflow text will flow into it. Then position it where needed.
Also, you can create a text box the width of the page and then set it for 2 or more columns.
When you want to send something to the back and you may want to access it again later, just use the send backward command. If you send it all the way to the back, it will be behind the main text layer (where it will be safe from acvcidental movement) but you will have to click outside the work area and then drag the pointer to the object to select it.

First, some clarification:
* The location bar (often called the "awesome bar") is the larger bar on the left that shows you the address of the page you are currently viewing. As you type in the location bar it searches your history and bookmarks for matches.
* The search bar is the smaller one on the right. It typically displays an icon of whichever search engine is currently selected and may display search suggestions as you type in it.
It sounds like you are referring to the search bar rather than the location bar. You can change search engines for the search bar by clicking on the icon on the left edge of the search bar and choosing a different one. You can also choose "Manage Search Engines" to remove ones you aren't interested in using.
It also sounds like Bearshare might have changed your homepage in Firefox. To restore that you will need to open the preferences menu (click Tools > Preferences), go to the General tab (first on the top left), and click "Restore to Default".
