How to get songs that are in "previous iTunes Libraries" folders ??

I am unable to play scores and scores of songs that were on my iTunes 4.9 playlists now that I have "upgraded" to 7.0 I have a strange icon to the left of the song on my song list and when I go to play the song I get a message that the song cannot be located. The following notes come from iTunes help (see below) and I am wondering if anyone else has lost music and if so.....are they really lost or just misplaced? I would hate to think Apple would insist on an upgrade to buy more iTunes if they are going to scrub away hundreds of your other songs.
HELP PLEASE
Note: The library file name for versions of iTunes prior to 4.9 was "iTunes 4 Music Library" for Mac OS X and "iTunes 4 Music Library.itl" for Windows. After upgrading to iTunes 4.9 or later, the older library files are moved to a "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder.

If the strange icon you refer to is an exclamation point, the problem is that the song files are not in the location the iTunes Library files are saying they are.
Note that the iTunes Library files do not contain the actual song files but rather a list of references that point iTunes to where the songs are (or rather should be) located.
So the first thing I'd do is find out just where the files are on your computer. Have a look at this article in the Apple Knowledge Base for some ideas on how to do so.
Post back and let us know if you're able to find the song files.

  • How to view songs that are not in any playlist

    I am using iTunes 6.04.
I want to be able to view songs in my Library that are not associated with ANY playlist. How can this be done? Please don't suggest to me upgrading to iTunes 7.02. (with every iTunes update, Apple makes is more difficult to do the things Apple doesn't want you to be able to do).
    Thanks
    Ben

Please be patient. If you don't get a reply within a few hours, obviously nobody passed by who knew the answer to your question.
After all we're just fellow users trying to help as these are user-to-user forums.
    I have an answer.
    Run one of these scripts:
Not In Any Playlist will create a text listing of songs that are not in any playlist.
Not In Any Playlist To Playlist will put songs that are not in any playlist into a new playlist.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to recover song that are "lost", itunes can't find them even though I have downloaded and played them before

Does anyone know how to recover songs that itunes has "lost"?
I downloaded them, synced my ipod, songs were added and I was able to play them.
On a recent sync the songs are suddenly "not found" according to itunes.  I can't locate them in the itunes folder, so I have no idea where itune put them.  BTW-this is not the first time itunes stored songs in a random directory......  Since itune can't find them, they were deleted from my ipod

Look, I understand I still need a card attached to the account. The problem is, it won't accept my card because I only have 87 cents in my bank account right now.
If I had known there would be so much trouble with the iTunes card, I would have just put the cash in my bank account in the morning instead of buying an iTunes card (I didn't expect the banks to be open on Thanksgiving of course).
Apple will only accept cards that have a balance. The balance is so small in my account that it won't accept it as a valid card.
I'm going to have to contact Apple anyway to reset the security questions. That's obvious. Your answers were not exactly helpful. You didn't tell me anything I don't already know, but thanks for trying to be helpful.

  • ITunes Match on my iPhone shows songs that are not in iTunes on my Mac and PC.

Yes, I know that deleting songs from iTunes does not necessarily mean they are deleted from iTunes Match, too. Not checking the box when deleting songs is definitely not why this is occurring, so hear me out. My Mac hosts my main iTunes library. What I do there, is synched with iTunes Match. In iTunes in Boot Camp, I have no local files, so all that iTunes on Windows shows me, are the songs that are matched with and uploaded to iTunes Match. As far as I can tell, it's exactly the same as my main library on my Mac.
It's a different story on my iPhone, though. There are songs that show up on my iPhone that I have deleted on my Mac. Some several times, even. A little while ago, I ripped one of my CDs and had it matched with iTunes Match. I made some changes to the metadeta afterwards, though, so I deleted the songs and added and matched them again. And again, that same day. I did the same things with a single song.
And now I'm stuck with three copies of the album and of the song in iTunes Match. But the weird thing is, that only one of each shows up in iTunes on Windows. That library, again, does not have any local music; it only shows what's in iTunes Match. I have tried disabling iTunes Match on my iPhone, I have deleted all local content on my iPhone, I have deleted the album and the song – the files that are showing up multiple times on my iPhone – from my Mac, updated iTunes Match, re-added the files and updated Match again. Unfortunately, none of this helped.
After deleting the files and updating Match, I saw only two instances of the album and the song in question, instead of three. After re-adding them and updating Match again, there were three of each again. That means that there are two instances of the album and of the song 'stuck' in iTunes Match. And yet they don't show up in iTunes on either OS X or in Windows.
Why is this happening? And, more importantly, how can I fix it? In the grand scheme of things, this is obviously a minor problem, but it's annoying me a lot nonetheless.

Is there really nobody else with this problem? Really?

  • How  to delete songs that are in two playlists?

How do I delete one copy of a song that is in two p[aylists?

You almost certainly only have one copy of the song in your library. The song listings in a playlist are just "pointers" to the song, not duplicate copies. So if you want to remove the song from one of the playlists, just highlight the song in that playlist and press the "Delete" key.
If you want to remove the song from both playlists, then unless you want to remove the song completely from your iTunes library, you'll have to delete the song from each playlist separately.
    Regards.

  • How do you delete songs that are in your iTunes?

I have imported many song into my iTunes but i would like to get rid of some of them and i dotn listen to them.
Is there any way of removing them altogether from iTunes or am i stuck with them????

If I'm understanding your question correctly you just want to delete songs from your itunes account.  Go into your main music library, hold down the CTRL button on your keyboard, and while doing that, click on any songs that wish to permanently delete.  When you've got those highlighted, let go of the CTRL button, right click on any of the highlighted songs, choose delete, and then confirm what you want to do.  You can't do this from a playlist.  It has to be from the main music library.  Hope that's what you're looking for.

  • Adding songs that are not in iTunes folder on hard drive

I'm trying to drag and drop songs from a hard drive onto by 120G ipod classic. I keep many of my MP3s on a separate drive that is dedicated just to music files, but this means they are not in my iTunes Music folder (C:...\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music).
Basically, my problem is that I can drag some songs over but not others. I don't get any sort of error, but when I drag most songs onto the iPod (using iTunes 8.2.1.6) the status at the top will quickly flash "syncing ipod, do not disconnect", but the songs are never added to the pod.
Can anyone help? iTunes is set to Manually manage the songs (as opposed to syncing) since I don't necessarily want them sync'd!
    Thanks for any help!

It wasn't clear from your post, are you trying to bypass iTunes entirely and drop songs (native files) directly to the iPod? You can keep songs outside of the iTunes Music Folder, and you can drag songs from your iTunes library to the iPod, but you can't drag a song's native file directly onto the iPod -- you have to add the songs to iTunes first, then add the songs from iTunes to the iPod.
You can still have your music in iTunes but keep the native files organized how you want them outside of the iTunes Music Folder. Just de-select the options "Keep iTunes music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" (see your iTunes Preferences on the Advanced tab).
If I mis-read what you're doing and you really are trying to add to the iPod from iTunes, then the problem might be with the native files. Do they play OK in iTunes? What version are the tags?

  • Hard disk failure, replaced; how to get songs from iPod back into iTunes

    Hard disk failure, replaced with new hard drive etc;
How do I get all songs from iPod back into iTunes?
(mix of CD sourced and iTunes shop sourced)

I can't believe there's no answer to this. Apple wants to charge customers for support but this has got to be happening thousands of times a day what with Windows OS reinstalls being what they are-numerous! Please let me know if/when you get a reply, thx!

  • I need to get songs that are currently on an ipod onto my computer

I have a windows pc, I just formatted the harddrive. I expected that I could just copy all the songs from the ipod to the computer but that didn't work (some error)
So how would I go about doing this? How would I get my songs back on my computer. I didn't download them from itunes btw.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. The transfer of non iTunes Music Store content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and was written long before iTunes 7 so it requires a little adaptation as the iPod preferences are no longer in the location described for instance but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. Relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • How to delete songs that are trying to download, that I did not select?

Clicked on one song, and it is trying to add approx 20 others, I can manually stop the download, and delete, but they come back and try to download later?
This could get expensive, now I am afraid to click on my purchased songs, because the downloading will start again.

You almost certainly only have one copy of the song in your library. The song listings in a playlist are just "pointers" to the song, not duplicate copies. So if you want to remove the song from one of the playlists, just highlight the song in that playlist and press the "Delete" key.

  • How to get photos that are saved under Events in iPhoto to external drive

    Hi,
I do photo slideshows on my Windows PC. I have all my photos under specific names Events in iPhoto on my Macbook Pro. How do I get a group of photos onto my Simpledrive external hard drive. I have tried to save it to desktop then drag the folder in the Simpledrive but it does not work.
I was hoping someone out there could help me please.
    Thanks
    Dave

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Mount the external drive and then open the destination folder
Run iPhoto and select the Event then 'Select All' (command-a) and drag those items to the destination folder (just tested this on a zip drive and it worked as expected)
Make sure the external drive is correctly formatted for the Mac to write to, while it can read NTFS it must be FAT32 for writing.

  • Purchased on iPod touch. How to get song on the computer into iTunes?

I downloaded a song on my iPod touch using the iTunes access. Now I have my iPod touch connected to my computer and trying to restore it. However, when I click restore it says I have purchases on my iPod that aren't in the library yet. I thought yes, I know. So I went on iTunes to the file tab and clicked the transfer from iPod touch. However, nothing happened. How can I get the purchased song on my iPod onto my computer?

Right click on the iPod in the sources list in iTunes and select the Transfer Purchases option.

  • HT201302 How to import photos that are imported from itunes back to iphoto?

I had imported photos from Itunes( Iphoto ) to my iphone and i deleted all the photos in Iphoto. Now I wanted to control some of the photos but I can't! If I sync photos again, all the photos will be gone. So I wanted to import the photos in my Iphone back to Iphoto. Anyone knows how?

The iTunes transfer process for photos from your computer is a one way transfer process only. Photos transferred from your computer are optimized for viewing on the iPhone - the original resolution is changed/lowered, which is why transferring these photos in the opposite direction is not supported.
There are some 3rd party paid utilities that provide for transferring these photos in the opposite direction but the original resolution of these photos deleted from your computer will be lost and the 3rd party utilities are not supported by Apple.

  • Hello, I have a problem with the iPod, is that the iPod does not sync all the songs that are on my Itunes. I have 373 songs on the iPod and iTunes 512 in ... What do I do?

Hello,i have a problem with the Ipod,is that the Ipod doesn't sync all the songs in my Itunes. I have 373 songs in my Ipod and 512 sons in my Itunes. What do i do?

    Hello,
I take it you haven't unticked any of the songs listed on your iTunes Library? Also have you tried selecting all your songs which you wish to add to your iPod, and dragging them over your Devices "iPod Nano"; and seeing if that copies all songs on to your iPod?
Another idea is just check that your iPod has enough space for the rest of your songs to be added to your device.
    Hope this helps.
