How to get the best colour representation on screen

Hi there,
I am trying to get my LCD to most accurately represent colours from my Pantone swatch book. I have a Huey Pro calibration tool to assist in the LCD calibration.
So, I've calibrated the display as best as I could. It's not a top of the line LCD and the Huey isn't the top of the line colourimeter so I understand that I won't get things absolutely perfect.
I'm starting with the basics: trying to match the C M Y & K from the swatch book. Figure that's a good place to begin. I'd like to see RGB and CMYK values look as accurate as possible on my display. If I can figure that out, then I guess it's time to understand how to match the Pantone values and the Lab settings and all that jazz.
My PS Colour Settings are North America General Purpose 2
RGB: sRGB IEC61966-2.1
CMYK: US Web Coated (SWOP) v2
Is there anything else I can be doing to get a better on-screen representation?
Is this Holy Grail even attainable with my modest setup?

Humm could be one of two things...
If the Display Resolution is off, go to: Apple > System Preferences > Displays > select the Display tab and choose the highest Scaled Resolution in the list.
If just the Desktop picture is to narrow, go to: Apple > System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > select the Desktop tab and change the Fit to Screen setting to Fill Screen.
Likewise, I might complain to Verizon because those folks had no business messing with those setting.

System Overload & How to get the best G4 Performance

Okay all you Logic and OSX Gurus. I need your help. I've finally made the LOGIC leap from OS9 and have hit the SYSTEM OVERLOAD wall like many of you before me.
I've been pouring over this, and many other Forums and Blogs, for about two weeks now, and have tried many of the fixes / solutions to no avail. I estimate I'm now getting about 25% of my OS9 Logic performance from Logic in OSX.
One specific case in point is this. A four minute song sketch. No tempo changes. Four midi tracks, 6 Audio instruments and 2 EFX (1 Guitar Amp Pro, 1 Space Designer that's no even being used).
I have unsuccessfully tried to Bounce this to disc for two weeks now. The AUDIO and DISK I/O Meters barely register until the GUITAR AMP PRO track brings the AUDIO METER up to about 1/3rd usage. At various points in the Bounce the G4 will completely FREEZE, and I will have manually restart.
THINGS I HAVE TRIED, and continue to try are:
- Repairing Permissions
- Trashing Preferences
- Updating MOTU Drivers
- Changing Processor performance setting - which I cannot do BTW, because my system does not seem to support this option.
- Closing all Widgets
- Freeing up more Space on my Mac OSx startup disk (I now have 78.41 Gig available on a 114.49 Gig drive)
- Run Cocktail to clean up System logs and temporary files
- FREEZING TRACKS as a temporary 'fix'. This did nothing BTW but add more strain to the CPU and I still had about 1/3rd the usage with my GUITAR AMP Plugin (and it still crashed).
- Increased AUDIO BUFFER to 1024
So, (and I guess this is really two sides of the same question)...
1) How do I FIX this SYSTEM OVERLOAD problem, and
2) How do I "optimize" my Dual 1.25 G4 in order to get the best performance possible out of LOGIC PRO?
OTHER QUESTIONS I HAVE ARE:
- Does the G4 have the processing power needed to run LOGIC PRO?
- I'm confident adding RAM will "help" (can't hurt), but am I really dealing with a RAM Problem here or, again, can these processors really handle it?
BTW - I'm not looking for an excuse to go shopping for a Quad G5 (I mean who needs an excuse... . But, I'm really trying to determine if at the end of the day I will spend money on RAM, Hard Drives, whatever..., and then still be frustrated and end up shopping.
- Are SCSI drives a problem with Tiger / Logic? These Cheetah drives are fast (10,000 RPM), reliable, and have been great drives to record on. I'm trying to do this simple bounce to one of the Cheetahs and as I said it's just not happening.
- Does the startup volume size effect performance?
- Does the amount of free space on the start up drive effect performance?
- Firewire 400 vs 800? My sample library is on the Firewire drive, and I'm thinking this does not pull a lot on the CPU as these get loaded into memory before playing? Am I right about that? It is Firewire 400.
A long letter and a lot of questions. I thank you all in advance for any answers, guidance or direction you can give. Please also let me know if there is something I HAVEN'T asked, looked at or should be doing.

And after months of using Express, and a week of
using Logic, I hadn't had a system overload until
today. Now I'm having them all the time. It wasn't a
set up change, it wasn't running on the battery, it
wasn't running software monitoring, it's set up with
512 i/o buffer, medium processor buffer. And it
wasn't brought on by number of tracks - that's for
sure. After it started happenind and I took a break &
came back, I was sitting on my couch, Powerbook in
my lap, tapping a beat in with the onscreen
keyboard.... a SINGLE instrument, mind you. NO plugs,
no other tracks of ANY kind. And it happened.
There's a lot of great, relevant and very helpful info on this forum and it all helps and it all counts. But..... so many people are suffering this when moving up to Pro 7 from either Pro 6 or Express. One expects a change in system load when a major update comes along but more and more people are reporting that simply recording 1 or 2 tracks of audio, pure, no plug-ins or EQ is causing an overload whereas in the previous version(s) this was easily accomodated. This, you may have guessed, has happened to me as well. Are we to accept in 1 version increment (albeit a major one) there is such a massive increase in demand from hardware that you cannot record a pure no-plug-in stereo track? When going back to 6.4.3 it will happily record 8 at once, let you EQ and reverb and then do another 8 AND then another. With no troble at all.
It is pointing more and more towards fundamental flaws in the programming. Did L7 come out too soon? Are we just beta testing what is pro software? We are only on 7.1.1 and 6 went to 6.4.3 but at no stage was it this bad at the fundamentals of what the App is for. I love Logic, I really do, but I think, even with all the great help we are fighting what Apple should be addressing. Not that you can find/contact/talk to or get any sort of response from them.
I have tried but have gone back to 6.4.3 until 7.1.2 or even 7.2 appears, but I'm not paying for 7.2. My £200 upgrade from 6.4.3 is now sitting on a shelf desperately wanting to use it.

How to get the best sound from iMac?

Has anyone heard of "Pure Music"? Supposedly it's able to make music sound better. I downloaded it for a 15 day trial but haven't figured out how to get it to work with itunes radio. I'm using Klipsch 2.1 speakers with a late '13 iMac 3.1 quad core i7 w/ Yosemite. I'm not unhappy with the sound. Just wondering if there are any ways to enhance or tweak to get the best sound out of my system.

*just a little update, I fixed the problem.
I was suppose to put the Nvidia driver controller for the select program tab as well
Everything is running much smoother now, and I also had to turn off eco mode lol.

IDVD quality update... how to get the best looking photo images on your TV

To get the best quality photo slideshow (that looks the best on my TV)
1) create the slideshow with music in "Photo to Movie" program
2) send it to IDVD from "Photo to Movie"
3) create the menu in iDVD
4) make a disc image from iDVD (file - save as disk image) save on the desktop
5) burn DVD at x2 in disc utilities on a Verbatim DVD-R disc
???? Any other suggestions to get a better quality product !!

in search of the best looking photoslide show DVD to view on a TV..... a couple more questions
if I understand some of the recent posts to get a clear picture:

I need to import all of the photos into photoshop CS (or a similar product) and resize them to 1280 x 960 (4:3)ratio then open iDVD and import them.
If I am doing Ken Burn effects then resize them to 2560 x 1920 and use "Photo to Movie" to create the slideshow then import into iDVD (to get a cool menu)
can you just bring the images in from iphoto (in the same format that they were imported from the camera)?

Mirroring won't fill the TV screen. The iPad has an aspect ratio of 4:3 and the iPhone and aspect ratio of 3:2, neither of these will fit exactly into a TV screen which as an aspect ratio of 16:9. The Apple TV will not zoom the mirrored image, because it may well cut off information which is situated at the top or bottom of the screen.

How to get the best possible performance when accessing remote files

I have recently set up a VPN to allow remote access to an MYOB data file hosted on my Mac Mini at home (MYOB is an accountancy software package for Mac and PC).
My Mac Mini is connected to the internet over a standard ADSL home broadband line, with a terrible upload speed. I think my ISP (BT) quotes 512k upload and up to 8 Meg download. Needless to say, access to the data file is sluggish at best.
Can anybody recommend a better way to host the data file?
I am aware of lots of 'free file hosting' services, a quick Google search brings up loads, but I need to actually open and run the file from its remote location. I cannot download and then upload again because we have multiple user access, and need to ensure the file on the server is not being edited by two people at once.

I preferred the Amazon S-3 option for ease of use and setup, but this does not appear to work. The software accesses the file very quickly indeed, which is great, but I think due to the connection protocol the network volume reports 'zero' disk space remaining.
The MYOB application does not like this, so pops up an error message saying it needs at least '200kb of disk space to open'. This is because, upon opening, it writes a couple of 'lock' files to the disk where the data file is stored.
My previous solution with the Mac Mini used VPN to connect, thus allowing SMB shares for windows users and AFP shares for Mac, and when mounted these network volumes would report the remaining disk space of the Mac Mini itself. MYOB liked this.
Is there any way I can get the network share to report something other than zero disk space remaining?

Otherwise, the VPS option sounds very affordable. I am however unfamiliar with the world of dedicated servers and the Ubuntu OS, but surprised they are so affordable. I would rather go this route than change my home ISP.
Firstly I have never used Linux or typed anything into the command line. So, will I be able to use VNC to access the VPS?
Second, to access the data file, should I continue to use VPN? My current VPN server software supports Linux, so can I use this on Ubuntu?

How to get the best iPhoto/Aperture slide shows on Apple TV

Hi. I'd like to do very simple slideshows on Apple TV 2nd generation for friends and family, but haven't been able to get it to work very well. My needs, I think, are simple:
No gimimick transitions, e.g. no Ken Burns. I don't mind an ultra-brief fade in/out, but that's about it. I found Classic, and that seems to work. I'm only mentioning it as it might have a bearing on the next two.
I'd like complete control over advancing slides using the Apple Remote, or the Remote app on the iPad. No auto-advancing. If we're all enjoying, talking about a memory, the last thing I want is that memory suddenly yanked away to the next slide. When I try to pause, it pauses the music instead of the slides.
I'd like the photos to have 720p resolution, which is what the Apple TV 2nd generation is capable of. All the originals are higher resolution (typically 3000 vertical, varying widths depending no how I've cropped), but sometimes the Apple TV decides to make them much grainier than one would expect from 720p. Other times they look fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

No there is no way to Mirror full screen from an iOS device to the Apple TV. iOS devices are not 16:9 like your HDTV so the mirrored image appears as the size your iOS device would be if it were the size of your TV. Hope that makes sense.

How to get the best from 8gb ram in macbook pro_bootcamp Win 7

I know what you are going to say, (run 64 bit windows) but bare with me. I have brand new 2011 unibody macbook pro 13" 2.8 ghtz dual core 8gb of ram. When running bootcamp windows 7 it shows only 2.16 gb ram usable. I thought that 32 bit windows can handle 4 gb ram so how can I get at least that much grunt out of the machine.
Yes, yes thanks for telling me that I can use 64 bit windows 7, but see I have downloaded a lot of autodesk 32 bit software (at 3gb per program) so it will be a month or so before my broadband is up for that kind of downloads again. I was wondering if you have a solution to at least get closer to the 4gb that should be available.

The only way to have Windows use 8GB ram is to, as you said you don't want to hear, use 64 bit Windows. Do the math 2^32 vs 2^64. It does not matter that you don't want to hear it, it is what it is.
BTW, 32 bit programs will run in 64 bit Windows.
And the reason you Windows can't use all your 4GB ram is because some of that 4GB is being used by your graphics etc.

As for the hardware, some of the comments are on more current CPU's, etc., than I have. From my reading, I do not disagree with any of it.
For the I/O layout, the only thing that I saw (and think I commented on when that first was posted) was the FW-800/external. My comment was based on my personal experiences with my hardware and SD material only. I do not debate that eSATA is better, but I have a lot invested in FW-800 externals, so have not made that jump. Also, my workstation's slots are full, so no eSATA for that box. I do recall that Jim Simon tried FW-800 and had nothing but problems. Guess that I have been lucky. To date, they have worked well for shuffling some Projects between the laptop and the workstation. As an aside, if I can work by the pool for much of a Project vs being in a dark interior room - guess which I will choose. So long as I can struggle by with the 17" monitor, I'll go for the outside. Need the big screens, or more power, and I just cart the external upstairs. Still, I do not disagree with your comments.
Though I have a pretty good I/O system, when I do a new build I will definitely have your article in hand. Things have changed, since my last new machine and there is no reason to not incorporate the latest/best into it. I also have a printout of your "middle-of-the-road" workstation, and will likely model off of that too. Yes, things will change between now and then, but you provided a good template for me to work from.
In total, I really liked all three articles (see comment on the OS one above). You distilled many discussions into concise form. Now, you also furnish a single link to all. Beats doing a Search on the fora, trying to remember which thread Harm, Jeff, Jim, Bill, Eddie, et al replied to with hardware suggestions. You put it all together for all users.

How to get the best from Lightroom with my Nikon D700

I am having real trouble with the results from Lightroom from my Raw files.
I love Lightroom but am going to have to use another program unless I can figure out what to do.
Can anyone give me any advice?

Do you have admin rights on your mac? Otherwise, I am not to up on macs, and hopefully someone with more expertise can help with the installation.

How to get the best quailty for export to DVD

I am using Final Cut Pro Studio. I'm editing SD 16:9 anamorphic. What suggestions does anyone have for exporting (settings, rendering, to what (idvd, dvd studio pro) to DVD to be played on a computer or TV?

Duplicate the preset - actually, the folder for the preset. Each DVD preset folder contains an MPEG-2 video and a Dolby Digital audio preset. By duplicating the folder, you will duplicate the presets inside that folder. The duplicated preset will be placed in the CUSTOM Preset section (below the Apple section). Open the duplicated preset and tweak settings for the Dolby Digital encoder as I described above. Tweak the MPEG-2 encoder preset as needed for each individual project.
You can save any modifications you made to the duplicate presets once you've finished tweaking them. That will make it easy to use them again in the future.
As for the Taiyo Yuden / JVC thing, I always used Taiyo Yuden in the past, but about two years ago or so, all of my normal suppliers only had them available in JVC packaging. Same discs, different marketing name. Beware though, Taiyo Yuden/JVC also markets a "value" line of blanks that (and I quote) "Haven't met quality checks." So only purchase blanks from their "premium" line.

HD to SD how to get the best results

I have shot a 3 minute film in HD, edited in HD, then created a SD MPEG 2 in compressor and created a SD DVD in DVDSP. The quality was not very good. So I exported the film in FCP with print to video back to the camera then down converted back into FCP created my MPEG 2 in compressor and the quality was much better. My question is: Is there a quicker way? Its not so bad with a 3 minute film but when it comes to longer films is becomes a nightmare. any suggestions gratefully received.

I want a regular 4 by 3 aspect ratio.
Just guessing here: you're using Export Using QuickTime Conversion,
and in the Size section, you have the option of preserving the aspect ratio
(of the image, not the SD frame) using either Letterbox or Crop.
Make sure you have the Dimensions set to 4:3.

when the user navigates to User Administration --> user Mapping and selects a system from the listbox, say System "mysystem". it shows the fields
username
password and
domain
just like default exchange system that comes with standard portal installtion.
so, if i want to access the value entered in domain field of that user mapping screen, how can i get that value..
is there some method like "system.XXXX"
any clues??

Imac G3 How to get the crt off? or screen span one or the other

I have an imac g3 3500 mh and a slot loading drive. but the crt is geting very old the computer is like 10 years. but how do i screen spam on it.. i know there is a vga port on the back of it and i have a vga screen hooked up to it at the moment but its just that same pic as the other one.. i scree span with my mac book so i know how.. but how would i do it? Know if i cant do that is there a way i can turn off the crt? that would help even more as i hate crts I would jut put the imac under my desk and thats fine with me as i dont care about the computer being donw there or is there omthing i could put the logic born in and make it like a mini tower? i dont care if i mees up the computer also as becuase i have a brand new mac book but it would be cool to bout the mac book in the cace of the old i mac as a joke lol. and my mac book is the last gen not the new new ones bues i need fire wire lol ok thanks. and my main lang is french and i typed this all in eng. ok thanks.

Hmm wasn't aware that any of the 350s had a VGA port.
but would there be a way in the computer to unplug the crt?
There might be a way but it would involve going into the computer and disconnecting the video cable.
If you have the bottom off you could turn the "screen" control down on the flyback. It's the big black thing on top of the PAV on the computers right and those controls can be seen from the bottom right (computer's). I use a chopstick shaved into a flat bladed screwdriver point to do this.
