How to get to your files when your Time Capsule dies :(

I am posting this here to help someone who cannot access a Time Machine backup because
the backup was "corrupted"
the <insert whatever obscure message that contains the word "sparsebundle" here> message appears
the Time Machine won't open up your backups
the Time Capsule dies
First of all, I absolutly am a fan of Time Machine and Time Capsule. And they work great ... until they don't - and that is when panic sets in. I haven't had a Time Capsule die on me (because I remembered to enter a "Remember to get a new Time Capsule" event for 18 months after I bought my first one) and I am meticulous about keeping backups. I am a software engineer and, well, before we had github.com ... we had to protect our hard drives.
If your Time Capsule has died - or you can get into the Time Capsule through the Time Machine interface - you can still access you files. You don't need to go out and buy some fancy software to get back your lost stuff. You can't attach a usb cable to mount your Time Capsule (atleast on my 2T ones) - but you can open it to get to the hard drive
Most likely - the hard drive in your Time Capsule is still good (the thing that dies seems to be the power source). The key is to
open your Time Capsule peel back the rubber bottom and you will see some worx or hex screws
take out the hard drive (mine was a Western DigitalCaviar Green -> thanks Apple for being green!)
mount your drive to your Mac (you will prob have to get a SATA to USB adaptor (I use a Voyager Q)
from the Finder (yeah, the FINDER!) navigate into "data>ShareRoot" (this is where mine was, you might have to poke around)
double click the "sparsebundle" for your backups
In there, like little ducks, are directories for every backup - like a normal directory structure. This completely blew my mind when I found this out. It wasn't some mysterious thing like I was making it out to be. Everything was there, in increments, as I had before.
If you are not careful - you might damage your Time Capsule ... but chances are it is already dead. I keep my 2T WD in a safe place with a safe case for posterity. However that hard drive is just like any other hard drive ... it is just not in a Time Capsule.
This is a last ditch effort to get back your files. I resorted to this when I couldn't access my Time Machine backups through the GUI.
I hope that this helps someone and now, for something not so completely different: http://timecapsuledead.org

I just wanted to point out ... that when you "double click on the sparse bundle" - you are actually opeing up the "DiskImageMounter"  and another "hard drive" will appear on you Desktop or in your FInder.
It is this "second" Time Machine that you will find your files in date tagged directory!

  • How to get to existing files on external Time Capsule disk

Just got a TC, I like it, does what it says on the tin.
Now I have connected an external hard disk (which contains music & photos) to the TC because I figured my wife could access the same disk from her computer
The problem - although the disk appears as a shared disk on Time Capsule, I can't see any files. I figure this is an accounts problem - I have 2 user accounts setup on the TC but these will have different UIDs to the accounts on our computers.
If I save a file on the disk when mounted via TC, then disconnect and connect it directly to my computer, I see a new folder called 'Shared' which contains the new file.
So it is an accounts issue. But how do I sort things out so that both of us can see the shared files? Just move them all into the shared folder maybe? But is there a better way?
    TIA
    James

Open the Airport Utility, and select your TC and then Disk > File Sharing pane. Select secure shared disks with a disk password. Now use a single password to login and once login, you can see everything on the external hard drive.

  • How to store really important files on a Time Capsule

I'm wondering whether it is wise to store really important files on a Time Capsule (apart from Time Machine) because its hard disk is non-removable and non-replaceable and there is no mirrored backup. One could lose everything in the blink of an eye.
What workarounds are there? The TC is a brilliantly simple device, but it seems to have many limitations as well.

i think you already answered your own question
and there is no mirrored backup.
well, there is the archive feature ...
    What workarounds are there?
personally, in addition to TM backups to my TC, i use a couple of external firewire drives, each partitioned in two, and bootably clone my Mac's startup disks to those on a weekly basis.
week 1 / drive X = MBP to partition A and Mini to partition B
week 2 / drive Y = MBP to partition C and Mini to partition D
week 3 and so forth = start over.
using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, you could even incrementally clone your internal drives, which saves a lot of time.
    happy computing !

  • How can I view the files on my Time Capsule without using Time Machine?

In the past Time Machine was backing up to a regular external disc and I could view the files easily. I'm new to the Time Capsule and not sure this is possible as I can't "find" the Time Capsule disc.
    Thanks for any tips

The Time Capsule's drive appears as a network drive, so it doesn't show up as an external drive.
To access to it, first make sure you are connected to the Time Capsule. Then, open a Finder window and you will see the Time Capsule's drive in the sidebar, under "Shared". Select it and you will be able to access to the files stored in the Time Capsule

Yes the report painter report especially in the hierarchial format will not make much sense when you download to excel. Until now I also have not seen any solution to this.

  • How can I access the files on my time capsule?

I bought this thinking it could be used as additional storage, like a hard drive only wirelessly.  It appears to be functioning as backup but I don't know how to access the files to see if it actually is.  Any advice?  When I click on time machine in the finder it just takes me to a folder that says Data with no entry for date modified.  Yet elsewhere it tells me it has been backing up every half hour or so.  Whats the deal?

You do not access the backup file store directly.. you access it via Time Machine.. the files are not stored in a way you would directly access anyway.. all files are stored as a backup in a very complex structure.
Read Q14-17 on how to use restore to get files out of the TM backup.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
If you want to access files on the TC, copy them directly to the TC .. don't use backups as a method of access to other devices.

  • *MUST READ!!!* HOW NOT TO ERASE YOUR FILES WHEN SYNCING ON A NEW COMPUTER

Oh my GOD!! This is the biggest breakthrough since the discovery of fire.
Ever have a time when you had to erase ALL your files on your ipod/iphone/ipad because you are changing computers or your computer was destroyed?
    There is a  solution.
****This is needed by ONLY those who was syncing with the itunes on AT LEAST one category.(ex : music, video, app, books, pictures...) on the previous computer you were using.
If you had not synced with itunes on NO categories at all, and were doing EVERYTHING manually, you will not have any problems on a new computer, so you do not need this information.
Also, the ones who are trying to sync automatically(Seriously? you want to do that?) with itunes will not need this post. Do not read further.
So... the ones who are still reading are, 1. Have synced with itunes on at least one category. In my case, I was auto-syncing the application. 2. Have experienced enough frustration with itunes, therefore NOT thinking about syncing with itunes automatically.
ok. here it goes. When you go to a new computer, CHECK 'manage musics and videos manually'. And other categories(apps, pictures) should NOT be checked 'sync with itunes'. However, when you click apply, it will not work and require you to erase everything on your phone, even though you have pressed manage musics and videos manually. What I am saying is, even if you want to manage it manually, when you connect with a new computer, it will erase all of your data just for fun. Anyway, What you should do when this happens is, click yes. Then, itunes will start to erase all your precious info.
This is tricky now. 0.2 seconds after you click yes(yes, I will erase all my previous info), PULL OUT the usb cable!! HEH....
Then, when you put it back in, your iphone data will not have been erased, and the computer thinks that it erased all your files, and will give in to your command and follow your orders. Now you can manually manage your iphone on a new computer without erasing everything.
    I am so happy now.
***Disclaimer*** I will not take any responsiblitiy of the happiness caused by this post. Also, I will not take any responsiblity for any data-corruption or any other problems caused by implementing this method, although I am quite confident that as long as you don't take more than 2 seconds to pull the usb cable out after you pressed 'yes, i will erase', it will be okay.
P.S. If your life became better by this post, please say something below. Heh. Have a nice day.
P.P.S. Apple. Why do you erase everything on the phone when we decide to no longer sync with itunes? Is it THAT hard to make the option to let the user decide whether to erase the existing data on the phone?
P.P.S. Just a joke, but, I have once heard that the reason itunes is a memory hogger and take up so much space though it has really few options is because the programmer of itunes copied and pasted the source code 1000000 times.

Step 1. Backup your library regularly.
Step 2. After rebuilding/changing computers restore the backup.

I was able to copy all my files from my Time Capsule, but that is all they are...files. How do I get my new Mac Mini to emulate my other Mac?

    Doggiemommie,
Copying files is not a good idea.
The "other Mac" was backed up onto Time Capsule using the Time Machine. On your new Mac you should restore the old user - rather than copy files manually.
This usually happens during the initial setup of the new computer or you can do it later using Migration Assistant.
Please note, it is possible to damage backup file on the Time Capsule when you browse it and copy files manually.
    Hope this explains.

  • How to get a PDF file in iMovie ?

    Hello,
I have a sketch as a PDF file on my desktop.
How can I get this sketch in iMovie '11 ?
    Thanks for your answer !
    John

Thank you, but I have to be more clear ...
    I received a drawing from a friend - a Windows user - as a "docx" file.
When I clicked on it, it opened in Pages '09 version 4.0.5 with a message popped up stating : - Some warnings occurred. Would you like to review them now ? You can review warnings at any time by choosing View > Show Document Warnings.
With "Don't Review" or "Review" commands.
I clicked on "Review" and saw a Documents Warning stating a Missing font Calibri.
Clicking on Share > Create a PDF document that can be viewed and edited with a PDF application, or viewed in a web browser. Image quality 'Good' . And command 'Next …' and saved as ' logos1.pdf ' on Desktop command EXPORT.
It opened in Adobe Reader and I saw this message :
    - This document does not allow you to save any changes you have made to it unless you are using Adobe Acrobat 9, Adobe Acrobat Pro 9, or Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended 9. You will only be saving a copy of the original document. Do you want to continue? -
The Adobe Reader vs 9.4.2 was put on my Mac years ago …
I have the feeling I'm circling around a problem while NOT knowing how to get the sketch file in iMovie '11 …..
Please tell me what do I do wrong ?
Or should I ask my friend to resend the logo in another, and what file format ?
Hope I could make myself understandable, after several years living as a dutchman in France ?
