How to go beyond 5 authorized computers?

I currently have a desktop, a laptop, an old laptop with a crashed hard drive that was authorized, an IPad2, and Ipod, and an IPhone and a desktop at work--all of this I want to authorize to share information across iTunes and the Cloud. This is 7 computers, and I'm planning on purchasing a Mac Pro laptop. How do you get past the limit of 5 authorized computers?  Is there something you can purchase to go beyond the limit of 5 or what?  And...why is there a limit of 5 in the first place?  My father has 7 computers (1 PC, and the rest are Macs).
1)  Why is there a limit of 5? and
2) how do you get past the limit of 5 if you have more than 5 computers you want to link together?

As John has already said, it's an agreement with the record companies. At some stage, someone has decided that five is sufficient.
There is an obvious question here though.
Why do you need to put the same content onto all these different devices? What, for example, is the point of having the same music (or whatever) on a work computer as you have at home? Since Apps cannot be used on a computer, you don't need them on two different ones. Since you have an iPod - and an iPad, you have your iTunes Library with you, don't you? So why the desperate need to keep putting it somewhere else? You cannot Sync an iDevice with two different Libraries.
One thing you do appear to have missed; you can deauthorise the laptop with the crashed hard drive. That will save you one device. (Actually of course, you need to deauthorise all and then re-authorise just the devices you want, up to five.)
You may have noticed that I do not sympathise with your point of view. Personally, I don't see the need to ask Apple about this. If anyone needs to be asked anything (in my opinion), it's the record companies and the music business.
Why don't they devise a replacement for the outdated concept of copyright?
Why don't they allow us to pass our purchased music on to our family when we pass away?
Why did a certain musician (drummer) believe he was entitled to accuse his fans of theft while he was sitting in luxury next to his swimming pool in front of his very large house?

  • How can i change my 'authorized computers'?

my iTunes says i have 4 authorized computers with one left, but i only have 1 computer ( tho it now has a new HD so maybe iTunes thinks its #2. but that still leaves 2 mysterious authorized computers)  how can i update the authorized computers or at least see WHICH ones they are??

You can deauthorize all the computers and then authorize only the ones you have or use. See iTunes Store: About authorization and deauthorization, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420

  • How do I see my authorized computers?

How do I see my "authorized computers"? Are my iPods considered "authorized units" too? What do you do when an authorized computer's hard drive crashes and you cannot access iTunes at all?

iOS devices (iPods, iPads, iPhones) are not considered to be computers so aren't included in the authorised count. And as far as I am aware you can't see the list of authorised computers anywhere.
In terms of a computer crashing and you not being able to deauthorise it (individual computers can only be de-authorised directly on them), then when you reach the 5 computer limit you can 'deauthorise all' and then re-authorise the computers that you still have/need - you can only deauthorise all once every 12 months.

  • How do you reset your authorized computers? How do you reset your authorized computers?

I have 4 computers authorized out of my available 5.
Currently I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro, but some of my older computers are authorized. The problem is, I do now know which of my old computers are authorized. Is there a way so that I can 'reset' my records of authorized computers and re-authorize my computers that I am currently using?

Easiest way is to deauthorize all then re authorize the Macs you are curently using.

    Sorry this is not possible...
If you no longer have, or access to, the computer(s) you want to deauthorise,
Log in to iTunes,  go to "view your account info" on the itunes store,  deauthorise all five, (Please Note: this can only be done Once every 12 months)  and then re-authorize your current Computer(s) one at a time.

  • Authorizing computers: need urgent reply!!

I have a question regarding authorization of up to 5 computers. This feature is supposed to let you play your purchased music on up to 5 computers, right? Well, on all the topics I've read, people are saying that all you need to do is play the song on the computer you want to authorize. I don't understand this. How are you supposed to play the song on the computer you want to authorize when it wasn't downloaded to that specific computer. I am not understanding the step where you just play the song or purchased music playlist on the computer you want to authorize when the songs you have purchased are not on that specific computer. Can someone explain this to me please.

If the computers are on the same network, you can turn on Sharing (and Look for Shared Music) in iTunes and share the tracks that way. This is documented in the iTunes Help, so check there for additional information on Sharing if that's of interest.
The other way is to copy the tracks from the computer on which they were download to the other computers:
iTunes 4: How to copy music between authorized computers
Though it refers to iTMS purchased music, it applies to all your tracks. And if you happen to also own an iPod:

  • HT1420 I have used up the amout of authorized computers for one account, however two of them have crashed. How can I deauthorize those two without having to deauthorize the other three?

I have completed my list of 5 computers authorized. I am trying to authorize another one but I need to get rid of two authorized computers which hard disks have crashed. How can I deauthorize those two without affecting the other three?

Individual computers can only be deauthorised directly on them, but if you've reached the 5 computer limit then you can log into your account and 'deauthorise all' (which you can do once every 12 months) and you can then authorise/reauthorise the computers that you still have and need : authorising and deauthorising.

  • How do I determine what 4 computers are authorized to download content from my account?

How do I determine what 4 computers are authorized to download content from my account?  I need to manage what computers are authorized.

You can only see a count of how many computers are authorised, you can't see a list of them. If the computers are also associated to your account (e.g. you've used iTunes Match, automatic downloads, or redownloaded past purchases on them) then they might also show in the 'manage devices' section of your account on your computer's iTunes (Store > View Account menu option): Manage your associated devices in iTunes - Apple Support
You can also, once every 12 months, log into account on your computer's iTunes (Store > View Account) and deauthorise all computers and then reauthorise the computers (which you can only do directly on them) that you still have and need.

  • I have apparently already authorized 5 other computers and need to sync my iphone with this computer.  How do I unauthorize the other computers when i no longer have them?

i have already authorized 5 other computers that I no longer have and now cannot sync and store my music etc. on my current computer.  how can i unauthorize all other computers if I no longer have them?

Go to store on the menu bar. Select view my account.  From there, go to manage devices.  It will give you a list of all the computer that are authorized to use your account.  This will allow you to choose which ones you want to delete.

  • How can I increase the number of authorized computers?*

I have itunes on my company computer.  My company gives me a new computer about every 2 years.  I have already used 4 out of my 5 available authorized computers for synching my phone.  In another year or so, I'll have exhausted my 5th computer.  How can I increase the number of authorized devices? Thanks.

You can Deauthorize all the Computers and authorize the Computer you are using now.

  • HT1420 how do i find out what computers are authorized?

I have the problem that as I switch to a new iphone, all of a sudden i get the message from itunes that "you have already authorized 5 computers". I have had a couple of laptops that I no longer have access to. How do I find out what machines i have linked and remove machines from that list?

However, it seems that you can check...

This helped meRe: can i check/edit authorized computers?? Jul 5, 2012 7:25 AM (in response to koraygoksu)
In order to see which devices are authorized on your account:
    Open iTunes
    Click Store
    Click Account
    Click View Account
    Enter your password
Look in the second section iTunes in the Cloud
To the far right you'll see Manage Devices
Once it's clicked you will see all of the devices currently authorized in iTunes/on your account
I was going to say, "Hope this helps," but based on the above, I'm pretty sure it did!

Re: can i check/edit authorized computers?? Jul 5, 2012 9:27 AM (in response to Tina16)
For anyone who may come across this thread, Tina is incorrect. That doesn't show all the systems that are authorized to a given account, only those which are set up for automatic downloads or redownloading, which isn't the same as those that are authorized to an account to play protected content. There is no way to see a list of those systems which are authorized to the account.

  • HT1420 How can I see a list of authorized computers?

Where can I find a list of what computers are authorized?

No such list, I'm afraid. If you are at your limit and have machines you no longer need be authorized but have no control over, then see the following:
    Authorization and Deauthorization
Macs:  iTunes Store- About authorization and deauthorization.
Windows: How to Authorize or Deauthorize iTunes | PCWorld.
In iTunes you use the Authorize This Computer or De-authorize This Computer option under the Store menu in iTunes' menubar. For Windows use the ALT-S keys to access it.
More On De-authorizing Computers (contributed by user John Galt)
You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
      1. Open iTunes on a computer
      2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
      3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
      4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
      5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.
