How to go from M4V to DVD?

Hi all - I created a Slideshow in iPhoto and exported it to mobile, medium and display versions of M4V. I can now view them from iPhone and iPad and within iTunes, but I'd really prefer to get the Display version to DVD so I can distribute it to the people involved with the slideshow AND know that not all (most) will run on Windows. I'm a rookie way beyond my comfort level at this point Thanks in advance for the assist - Sabrina
PS - BIG question - now I don't see my Slideshow in iPhoto. Did I somehow delete it or is this normal when you export? Yikes!

One way it to burn the m4V file to a DVD (might even fit on a CD, or a flash drive). It can be played on a computer capable of playing video files with a modicum of familiarity on the part of the recipient with how to play video files on a computer. Some DVD players can even play mp4 files (you'd have to check and you might need to rename the file so it ends in .mp4).
The other is to 'author' a DVD such as the kind you would put in a television DVD player. The best software for doing this is iDVD from Apple. Apple pulled iDVD from its shelves. DVDs are old-fashioned and everybody (at least everybody who spends money on computers) does things with the Cloud and online services now, right, so who wants icky old DVDs? You view them with your MacBookAirs and your MacBookPros and on your AppleTVs and on your iPhones and iPods and other Apple goodies, not on television sets and (shudder) DVD players.
1a) Buy an old iLife from a place such as e-bay or Amazon (https://discussions.apple.com/message/18750180 or http://www.megamacs.com/index.php?action=frameview&id=404733009&D=1). Make sure it is a version that has iDVD. Do not buy it from Apple since their version no longer has iDVD.
1b) Depending upon which computers and discs you have you may be able to do a custom installation of the software using old system installer discs that had iLife bundled.
2) Try a third party application (none have the features of iDVD though).

I don't know what Mac you have. But I assume you have a Superdrive to burn DVDs...
Then when the FCE HD project is completed:
- make sure you render all (opt-R) and mixdown the audio (opt-cmd-R)
- if you want to see chapters in the DVD: set markers in the timeline where you want chapters: open the dialog of each marker (m), write the chapter name and click on botton Add chapter marker.
- File/Export/QuickTime Movie: select Include: Audio and Video, Markers: Chapter Markers, deselect Make Movie Self-Contained (if selected it takes longer, it uses more disk space, but it makes the movie independent)
- use iDVD that comes with your Mac (if with Superdrive...) to make the DVD
- make sure the basic preferences are OK (PAL/NTSC, use Best Quality, etc.)
- select a Theme you like
- Import the movie exported from FCE
- now, it all depends on your willingness to personalize menus and the theme you selected: you can leave the standard menus or you can personalize them.
- when ready, burn the DVD directly, or better make a Disk Image first: you can check the results on your Mac before real burning (then you must use DiskUtility to burn the image).
These are the basic and minimal steps: they might seem many but in facts the longest time is the time iDVD takes to prepare the Image itself.
Obviously there are other options: using other DVD authoring programs, burning on external devices, if you don't have Superdrive, etc.
But these are the ... facts.

This may be a dumb question. I know that you press "c" key on a MacBook to boot from DVD. But what about a Mac Mini with wireless keyboard? Does the Mini see the keyboard when there is a NEW drive inside?
I've searched but can't find the answer.

This advice is correct, except here are the full directions:
1. Press power and startup macbook OR click on apple icon in upper right corner and click restart.
2. As computer starts/restarts, hold down the option (ALT) key until you see a choice of options to boot from. There will not be an option for external cd/dvd, until the computer has finished reading that drive.
3. Wait as much as a 30 seconds to 5 minutes as macbook recognizes the bootable disk in the external cd/dvd drive. As long as the drive is making noise/reading disk, wait it out. The new selection will appear on its own.
4. Select dvd to boot from, then click the arrow below. It will begin to boot from that drive and install/reinstall your OSX.
5. Follow the prompts to install OSX
Notes: I was using a macbook 4,1 and external dvd burner with separate power supply, and Mac OSX Install disc that came with my macbook (OSX 10.5.4)

From m4v to dvd

My dad is not computer savvy, he has a dvd player and that's it. I have bought him on iTunes a bunch of videos (NHL Retro) which are m4v files. I'm trying to find a way to burn those files into dvd player files using iDVD for instance, with no success. Is there anyway to do so? I have tried to convert them into .mov files or mp4 files but I'm running into dmr problems .

Videos bought on the iTunes store have copy protection (thanks to the movie studios), so you will not be able to burn them into a DVD that can be watched on any standard player.
My recommendation would be to buy your dad an iPod touch, and a TV connection cable. That way you can be in charge of the content and the set up; after that they will only need to select which video to play on the iPod.

How to recover from a repair DVD?

I created my repair disk on DVD about 6 months ago, without the image, just the repair disk. This is a 2-year old HP desktop Pavillion.
Now I have a brand new drive WD 500GB (original was Seagate 500GB, both SATA) and the repair disk does not work with it. I formatted the new drive using the same desktop from the command prompt using the command Format C:, one NTFS volume 500GB. The repair disk loads fine but none of the options get me to recovery. When I go to the Recovery Manager, all the options are not enabled, and no way to select the recovery options.
What is the problem?

The problem is you needed to create a set of about 3 HP recovery DVD's when you first got your computer. If you still have the original hard drive and it functions properly and you didn't erase or format it, than you could reinstall it and make a set of recovery discs. If it was broke, erased/formatted, or you got rid of it... you will need to order a set of discs from HP.

How do I create a start-up disk image without restarting from the Install DVD?

(I know this is not MacBook Pro question per se, but I can't find a software discussion this applies to.)
Situation:
My MBP is running, but it's acting up and Onyx tells me that the start-up volume needs repair and directs me to use Disk Utility.
But to repair a volume using Disk Utility, you must restart from the original Install DVD (or some other start-up volume).
But although the MBP will read my old Leopard Install DVD and the Install DVD that came with my MBP, it refuses to restart from either of them. (Trying to do so gets as far as the Apple logo on a gray screen and then hangs there; all disk activity ceases.)
Question:
How can I (is it even possible to) create a start-up volume on my external FW drive without starting my MBP from a DVD?
In other words, is there a way to either:
a) create a disk image from the Install DVD on my external FW drive and then designate that disk image as my start-up drive?
OR
b) create a disk image on my MBP's internal drive that I can then use to run a System Install on my external drive?
(BTW, I know I can create disk images using Disk Utility, but it offers many options for type, compression, etc., that are beyond me. )
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

OS X Lion includes a new feature called Lion Recovery that includes all of the tools you need to reinstall Lion, repair your disk, and even restore from a Time Machine backup without the need for optical discs.
Restart your Mac holding down the Command-R to enter the Recovery HD.
From there you can use Disk Utilty.

How to install Leopard from an external DVD reader?

Hi,
I've bought Leopard today. unfortunately, it's not yet installed on my PowerBook. As my SuperDrive is dead, I use now an external DVD (Lacie Portable DVD-RW), but it doesn't work. I can read the Leopard install DVD, but when it reboot, it reboot on my current installation.
I've tried the following during the boot sequence:
- alt pressed, but I can only see my main HDD
- c pressed, but I boot on my current installation
Can you tell me if it is possible to install Leopard from an external DVD, and how can I do that ?

How many Minutes of HD from a Standard DVD?

I was wondering how many HD minutes +/- a few can I get from a standard DVD if I buy Roxio Toast 10 Titanium w/HD plugin? Will the program tell me if I exceed the time amount? I want to squeeze in as much as I can.
And I'm currently running 10.4.11 on a Power PC, so is Roxio 9 w/HD plugin as good as 10 for burning HD on standard DVD? Or should I move up to OS x10.5 and get Roxio Toast 10. Is is worth the upgrade? I'll probably only use the HD part with a standard DVD at first, then get an external Blu-Ray unit.

Toast will tell you. The 20 minute estimate was based on 'normal' content with movement. Note that if you are taking pictures of a black cat in a coal bin, you can probably fit a lot more on a disc.
If you want HD quality, it makes absolutely no sense to drop the bit-rate to low values to fit more content on a disc. You might just as well create an anamorphically squeezed widescreen SD DVD; that will give you about 2 hours on a DVD.

iPhoto pulls off new videos from my iPhone 5 just fine. Does iPhoto automatically come up when you connect your iPhone? If it does, you should see your iPhone under "Devices" in iPhoto and then can select the videos to transfer (select, then Import Selected), though that should happen automatically.

Hi,
Just installed a new HD on my MBP. I inserted the leopard DVD and it was spinning for about 2 minutes and then nothing happned. Just black screen. Now I tried starting holding the C key down. Nothing. I tried starting holding the eject button down, no eject of the DVD. I tried holding the button below the tracklpad down, no eject of the DVD.

Boot single user -- hold down "cmd-S" immediately after you turn the computer on.
"diskutil list" will give you a list of your disks. My CD drive was disk1.
"diskutil eject disk" should eject the target disk.

Recovery Mode:
1. Turn off iPad
2. Connect USB cable to computer; leave the other end alone
3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
5. Release the Home button
6. Open iTune
7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
8. Use iTune to restore iPad
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad
