How to go wireless

hi. here is a stupid question
i just ordered the new imac, which comes with airport.
currently i have a cable modem, so how i make this a wireless connection, using the airport that came with the new imac?
thanks
nikos

To go wireless from the cable modem to your computer you need some form of wireless router. Either the aiport express or the airport extreme can accomplish this. All depends on how many devices you want on the network, the speed you want (airport extreme is faster) and how much you are willing to spend.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
I find it hard to believe that this information isn't clearly available somewhere, but it isn't and I don't think I've seen anyone here who is 100% sure. However, I believe you can have up to 10 associated devices, which include authorised computers (of which you can have up to 5), I suspect the Apple TV might become a temporary associated device while it's in use, but I'm not entirely sure myself.

  • How does does Wireless and a Wireless card work?

I bought an imac G5 1.8ghz We already have a BT wireless connection and I want to hook up to that. I gather that I need an airport card but I'm not sure how to insert a card into the machine there is a CD portal and ones for USB as well. How does this wireless business work and what do I need for my machine running Tiger 10.4.11?

The AirPort Extreme card appears to be the correct product
but you should be able to tell from some of the Apple Support
information in the form of their product support page for your
specific computer model. The main support section has a side
bar menu of products and if you find iMac G5, then look into it
further, you can identify what exact model iMac G5 you have.
{+If you have looked under the Blue Apple in the Finder menu bar+
    +and chosen About this Mac> more info> System Profiler> then,+
    +look under Network> Airport card, you can see if one is installed+.}
There are manuals, instructions and other info available, too.
The manual to install the physical AirPort Extreme card is in
the manuals link in the iMac G5 page in Apple Support.
Since there were a few different models of iMac G5, you should
be sure to get the install instructions that match your computer.
The card itself could be used in many different Mac models, so
it will NOT have installation instructions with it for your iMac G5.
{The hardware installation is the point of reference here; not the
    CD software, which very likely is outdated and not needed at all.}
    Apple - Support - iMac G5 models:

    Apple - Support - Manuals:
iMac models (from newer Intel, on back to older)
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/#imac
Since the iMac G5 (PPC) and iMac (Intel) look similar, you
will have to identify your computer in the G5 category to
be able to get the correct AirPort installation instruction .pdf.
How to Identify your iMac (note three designs)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1463
The software CD included with that older Airport Extreme package
will likely be older than your OS X version in the computer now.
    {So, you will NOT need to install that software to use the AirPort card.}
Examples of .pdf download manuals on how to install an Airport card
are as follows (these are actual links to these manuals.) +So, these may+
+not be for your specific iMac G5 computer.+ To be sure, use Identify page.

PS: if your 1.8GHz iMac G5 is a 17" LCD with Ambient Light Sensor, the wireless
AirPort Extreme is a built-in component: Model # M9843 (1.8 GHz) and in the older

Thank you very much for your help if any!!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Quite a few questions there, Sends, but I will do what I can to answer them.
I would first recommend buying a router, even if it is one that you won't connect to the internet and network this with your other PCs and the printer. This will give you the best functionality and results for what you are attempting to do.
Additionally, the Auto Off feature of the printer can be disabled, and is not affected by the connection type. You can usually go through the Setup Menu and select Tools to change the options there on the energy saving features.
Lastly, the auto off feature on your computer is a Windows question, but an easy one to answer. If you are on a laptop you can right-click on the battery in the service tray (bottom right hand corner) and change the energy conservation settings.
You might be better off installing the printer through the USB cord and alternating that based on when you are using it, but that would be optimal only if you are printing only a few documents on an irregular basis. A networked connection is the easiest to manage over several computers, honesty, but you do have some requirements for that connection and limitations as well.
I hope this information is useful!

  • How to write Wireless PC Card Driver?

    Hi, All,
Can anyone help me to find out how to write wireless pc card device driver?
    Thanks !!

There are [at least] two examples of PCMCIA dirvers in the DDK supplimentary suite. There is also an example of simple DLPI driver.
All you have to do is to combine those examples to get the PCMCIA DLPI driver and fine tune it to match your particular hardware. Any bells ring?
You will definitely need your card programming manual and/or software interface description for the last phase.
If you do not have one, you might get some open source (say, Linux or FreeBSD) driver for your card and do some code analysis to reveal the information you'll need.
    Hope this helps...
    Ilya.

  • How good is wireless networking under Win XP & BootCamp?

    Hello,
I'm heading off to business school in the fall and I need to run Windows XP (some of the Excel plugins for intro finance classes wont work in Mac Excel and there are some Windows specific programs we will be using). I just bought a Dell Laptop and am going to return it, as it came with a defective hardware driver - I believe its for the bluetooth, but the moronic tech support based in India can't solve the problem. I'm tired of all the blue screen crashes!
I'm thinking of buying a MacBook Pro and running XP under BootCamp. That way I'll get to use OS X and iLife also. How well does wireless networking work in XP? Any known coonectivity issues/problems? This is very important for me; my school's entire building has a 802.11b wireless setup and I have to be able to connect under Win XP.
On a more general note, reading these forums there seems to be a lot of problems with the MacBook Pro, i.e., heating issues being the most major. I don't know how serious these issues are. Should I go ahead and buy now or hold off on my purchase for a couple months and wait for these issues to be resolved?
Any relevant advice would be appreciated. thanks.

It's a good computer. Wireless works like a charm both in XP and OSX. There doesn't seem to be a WEP key index setting in OSX though.
There are obviously a lot of unacceptable quality flaws with the current MBPs. The only problems I've had are the notorious hi-frequency whine and a keyboard with tipping keys which is going in for repair.
If you get one without any flaws, in my opinion, the only question mark in deciding to get one or not is if you can live with starting up and closing photobooth on every OSX-boot to get rid of the whine as it doesn't seem to be fixed in the near future. If you can - get one.
    Good luck.

  • Looking for Help on how to get wireless near computer lab

Ok Im Near A Computer Lab, And I want to get free wifi. I can log into the router from one of the computer lab's computers by the >192.168.1.1 and see passphrase, wep keys all that stuff...
My Question is how can I get internet at home from this router?
    More info about router:
    Firmware Version: v2.0.02
    Mod: Wireless-N Broadband Router WRT160Nv2
    Questions I need answered:
    Basic Things Like, Mainly:
-What Adapter Do I Need? Is My Idea Plausible? What Information Do I need To Log Into This Internet connection from home? What Are The Consequences Of Leeching Internet this way?  just stuff to get me going.
-If I Succeed In Getting Internet From The Computer Lab's router, Will "They" Be Able To See My Personal Email, What I search For on the internet, Downloads Things like this?
Other Maybe Useless Info: I have a old Wireless-G PCI Adapter Model No. WMP54G, I Have Not Tried But I Dont Think The Card Works And Is Broken Do To After Installed The Toolbar Icon Was Completly "Greyed Out"

I'm pretty sure the "computer lab" settings are configured and restricted that is why the default address is not working. Basically, if it is not your network more so if the network is secured,  then definitely, you will not gonna be able to connect unless they had provide you the wireless settings like the SSID and the password. However though, if it is unsecured, then, that's no problem at all.
As with your wireless adapter, check on the links below:

  • How to install wireless on a Satellite 5200-903?

Due to a very bad virus I recovered Windows on a Satellite 5200-903 of a friendly businessman. But back home he saw: no wireless LAN could be used... It seems, that cause the WLAN-switch was "off" no WLAN-driver was installed/recovered...
Now he wants to come to me again tomorrow or the day after tomorrow - and I MUST know, how to install everything until then... he also will bring me his router, so I can configure everything for him on the notebook AND router (WPA, if possible).
But I found TWO drivers: one was a direct download of a small file of "Agere" - wlesslan-xp-7620390.zip
The other is from "Atheros", and the download is a links to another website "Toshiba EMEA - Wireless LAN Driver Portal" http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/wlan/?page=downloads , where I have to identify the WLAN adapter... But: on the first download-site (I mean BEFORE redirected to "Toshiba EMEA") there is at the list "Model" NOT any Satellite 5200.
Which driver is correct? Are there different WLAN-adapters in the 5200-903 series? Is it possible to find out the adapter model BEFORE he gives me the Notebook?
And in the list of drvers for the 5200-903 there was a download "WLAN hotkey" wlkey-xp-2003.zip ? Do I need that too? Do I need any other things?
And does such an "older" WLAN-Access work in another way than the integrated WLAN of a centrino e.g. ? I just know how to log into a WLAN with newer notebooks: button "wireless networks" on the right buttom oft windows, then chose the WLAN name to connect and type in the key, if needed.
Please help me, he lives 100 miles away from me and has not much time, he comes again to me just for that matter, and of course he was not amused when he returned home and couldn't connect to the internet... and he's an ABSOLUTE noob in technical things, so I cannot tell him how to do it on his own and need your help quickly.
    Thanks a lot!

    Hello Herb
I just want to make the whole story short and simply. After installing OS install drivers for hardware components. According the notebook specification for Satellite 5200-903 it is WLAN ready model and I do not know which WLAN card is inside. You friend should have info about that.
If there is Atheros WLAN card the right driver you can find HERE
After driver installation install all Toshiba designed tools and utilities starting with COMMON MODULES. It must be installed at first. WLAN-hotkey utility is important because using FN+F8 key combination you can enable/disable WLAN card.
WLAN software (Atheros WLAN client utility) is not necessary because for WLAN you can use WXP WLAN settings. You can use it if the WLAN card is activated properly.
So I hope you will set WLAN properly and if you need more assistance please write again.
    Bye and good luck!

  • Photosmart Premium C350g how to tell wireless working?

Installing on a MacBook Pro hooked up by usb to new printer - Configuring the printer, no network showed up - even with that network visible to 3 other computers that are farther away from the router (the router is a Time Capsule). I have read through a number of threads, all seem to indicate that I should be able to see the printer's presence or it should see my network, but I can find no indication that this is true.  If I wire the printer to the router, it is there and configurable, but still will not see my network (after pulling the wired connection, restarting the printer, and using the panel to turn radio on).  In short, if the radio just didn't work in this printer, I would be in the same boat.  How can one tell that the radio works?  I haven't seen entries in the router log that would suggest it tried to connect.

Thank you for the reply - I appreciate the help.  I wrote that first post at 1:30 AM, so first a correction - it is a Photosmart Premium AIO, model C309g.
The blue 802.11 light is on when it is trying setup, or when turned on from the control panel.  The wireless test page shows it is on but not connected.  The printer shows up on the router when connected by ethernet cable, and I can look at wireless config settings in a web browser at that point.  I can set it up by USB but it doesn't see the network, either when it searches, or when it accepts the connection parameters my laptop is using successfully.  I tried setting it up again through the ethernet cable/web browser route, then disconnecting the cable and changing to wireless, but it still does not see the network.
The router (Apple Time Capsule) I am using is advertising its existence, and shows up on 802.11n and 802.11g devices (laptops, iPhones, my neighbors can see it).   In addition, HP's tech specs on this printer say it has 802.11n wireless, so I don't think the g/n issue is in play.  What I am looking for is a way to confirm that the printer's wireless is actually working when I can't get it to see a network everything else has no problem seeing.  There is no Mac address filtering on the router; I have used WEP and WPA/WPA2 setups for the router, no luck.  Can I set the printer to broadcast an ad-hoc network ID or something so that it would show up to other devices, just to show that it is actually on the air?  Should it show up in the router's log files in any event? I can look for a Mac address from it, which I have from the config page, but I don't see it.
I may have missed something in the settings/connectivity area, but I don't know what that would be.  At this point I am trying to eliminate the possibility that the 802.11 radio in the printer is faulty.

  • How do I wirelessly connect my iMac to my Bravia TV?

I have a 27" iMac, an Airport Extreme, a Comcast router and a Bravia 46Hx750 Tv capable of wireless woopdedoddle.  Maybe I'm just too old, but I cannot firgure out how to get my TV to hook up to my wireless network (which I think I have).
My TV has displayed a WPA key which it wants me to tell the router and this really stumps me.  Help.  Is 91 too old to do this?

    Hello Valerie,
It sounds like you want to be able to see what you have on your computer screen, on your tv screen wirelessly.
This function is called Airplay Mirroring and is done through an AppleTV found here:
    http://store.apple.com/us/ipod/ipod-accessories/apple-tv
It is a device that attaches to your TV with an HDMI cable and when it is set up, will allow you to use the Airplay Mirroring function.

  • How do I wirelessly connect my iPad 4 to a Sony Bravia TV?

My Sony Bravia KDL-32W653A recognises that my iPad4 is on my LAN. But I just can't get the iPad content ( videos ) to show up on the TV screen.
The iPad Settings shows the " direct -GC-Bravia" other connection, but it wants to revert to my (John Lewis wireless connection.
If I tap on the other, Bravia panel I am asked for a password. I don't have a password for it and never have had. If I try to use my Apple password or that of my Sony support log-in or even my LAN home group , the iPad just messages:-  "Unable to connect to Diect-GC-Bravia"
I seem to go round in circles and get nowhere- Can anyone out there who has an iPad 4 (retina display AND a Sony Bravia TV help me please?
Maybe even a Sony employee? who owns a similar iPad?
    Davidthebass.

You dont.  Apple won't allow widely used standards and Sony is so behind the times in this area it's painful and almost as bad.  Apple forces you to buy an Apple TV whereas Sony forces you to own an android phone to do this natively.  Surprise!
disappointed I started my smartphone tenure with Apple; had no idea how badly it was going to burn me in about 100 different ways over the years.  All they have on android these days is more efficient hardware...: and since they don't take advantage of it... It's a moot point at the price premium.
as for Sony.  I just spent more than I did on my last car for their flagship and id be satisfied if it costed about 75% less and wasn't a "smart" TV.  Since it is - and this is 2015; the cost coupled with the inability to properly stream or mirror from.... Meh.  Not gonna waste another word.  If neither get it by now, they never will.  Talk with your wallet guys, it's the only language they understand.  Unfortunately they are wise enough to know the sheep outnumber dramatically so it's in vain anyhow.

I admit it... I'm a dunce. I usually just plug the usb for the hp c4280 printer right into my macbook pro, but I want to finally be able to use it wirelessly. I have an airport extreme, and i know there is a usb port... how do I add the printer so i can print wirelessly?
obviously i can't just plug it in and print (right? becuase i tried and no go on the printing).
someone please take pity on me!
    thanks!

Download the install Bonjour Print Services for Windows v2.0.2
Run the program. Hopefully, your printer will be recognized.
If it is, "install" the printer and try to print.
Keep in mind that if you have an All-in-One type of device, that only the print function will be supported.
Advanced features like copy, scan, maintenance, etc are not supported. You will need to connect the All-in-One directly to your PC if you need those services.
