  • How to change the letter on external HDD

My external hard drive was originally on the F drive and with this I had all my iTunes music too. However, for some reason, my computer has stopped recognizing the F drive; the following message is displayed when trying to open this drive:
"The drive or the network connection that the shortcut 'F Drive.ink' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again."
The problem I now have is that the external hard drive is now the G drive and iTunes doesn't seem to recognize the path (G:\iTunes) I have told it to use, i.e., my music is not loading properly and only a small fraction is playable.
Can anyone help me on this matter?

    Hi
I would recommend changing the external drive letter (G:) back to F.
Do you know how to do this?
After the external HDD was connected you should access the disk management and there you will see the HDD (single partitions) and the other drives.
Then you should mark the external HDD and should change the letter to F.
Possibly the F letter was reserved for another drive.
In such case you have to unlock the F letter by assigning another letter to the drive which uses the F letter.

  • Backup error- no write permission on external disk

Time Machine has been working fine until yesterday when I got the above error. I had write permission but root did not. Rebooting did not solve this problem. But ejecting my external disk and re-inserting it, did work and now everything is fine. Any idea what could have messed up permissions? I am posting this in case the same thing happens to another user-just eject your disk and re-insert it.

  • How to recover lost files on external HDD

Hello all, I gave my external HDD (G Drive, I bought it from the app store), as far as I see the model ist something like - HDST HTS 5410, to a friend and the dumm *** deleted all my old files (movies, fotos) and put new ones. So my question is how to restore/recovery if possible. Thank you and really hope there is a chance.

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
Your files were most likely overwritten, so don't expect too much success at recovering them.

  • How to link more than one external HDD to be recognized as one HDD

for the past 10 years or so i have been unintentionally collecting external HDD. some of them are 2T others are 250GB. is there a way to merge all of the drives so they are recognized as one single drive?

It is inevitable that someone will suggest using one of your extra drives to make a clone of your startup disk. This is a useful thing to have since it makes "regressing" to a former state of that drive possible, but it is important to understand how a clone differs from an archival backup strategy.
Basically, clones are functionally identical copies of volumes. (Drives may be partitioned into more than one volume, so each would have to be cloned individually to another volume to clone them all.) As generally & most practically implemented, clones are in effect snapshots of the state of a volume at some point in time. This means that any problems in the cloned volume will also be present in its clone, plus any problems that might result from an imperfect cloning process.
Thus, it is important that the clone is tested thoroughly before relying on it. If a clone of a boot volume, this means making sure that it will boot the computer & its system behaves normally as well as that it is free of any file system problems. This can take quite a bit of time -- it is easy to get complacent after a few clones have proved to be reliable & skip the testing, but if you are relying on it for backup this is not wise.
Also note that unless the cloning software has some provision for retaining old & deleted file versions -- and you use it -- each time you clone the volume you will lose those items, since the clone is intended to be a copy of the state of the drive at the time of cloning. So for example, if you overwrite an important file with another of the same name & file path by accident, you cannot retrieve the original one. Even if the software has a provision to retain the changes, it is not likely to do so in a way that makes it as easy to find or manage those file versions as with dedicated archival backup software.
Arguably, the best software for archiving is Leopard's Time Machine, with its spiffy user interface that makes it easy to see the state of the volume at any backed up previous time. And like most other archival backup software, it allows you to pick & choose what not to back up, & can backup files from multiple volumes onto a single one.
This type of software does not create a bootable volume like a clone does, so having both is a pretty good idea, especially when updating or upgrading the OS.

  • How do I back up an external HDD AND my macbook to another external HDD using Time Machine?

    Hi,
My little old Macbook is pretty slow and clunky at the moment and I have decided to transfer my iphoto library to an external HDD named 'photos'.
I've check, it's all there - present and correct.
I've removed 'iphoto' from my 'pictures' folder on my macbook to trash.
I've tried to back both macbook and photos HDD to time machine but I'm unable to recover the photos HDD.
I have opened TM preferences, selected options and excluded the 'photos' HDD from backups as I was under the impression that the drive shown in the window is the drive used by TM.
Can somebody help me please. I've tried to recover a photo, just to test the backup but unable to find anything.
    Kind regards
    T

If I understand you correctly you want to back up two drives simultaneously. If that is correct, you will find a guide here: http://pondini.org/TM/32.html

  • How can I boot from an external HDD that has an OS install on it?

    Hello,
I have Windows 8.1 installed on my 500GB LaCie external HDD and I am trying to boot my mac from it. I haven't had any success. Thus far, I am able to get to the Startup Menu from holding the option key and Windows does show up. However, when I try to boot it, it says "No Bootable Device Found."
Keep in mind, the hard drive has Windows 8.1 installed on it. It is not a drive to install Windows through Boot Camp.
Any help would be much appreciated.

  • How to share my mac and external hdd?

    Hey
    I was wondering about something.
I have a mac at home, with an external HDD connected. Is there some way that i can get access to the mac HDD and external HDD through the web from another computer (probably a PC)? The thing is that i often can't bring my MacBook with me, and therefore has to access some files from remote access. I have had a look on several guides, but they don't solve the problem, as i don't have the "FTP-sharing" tab in System Preferences -> Sharing.
Any way to solve this? Btw, my mac is connected to a pretty fast broadband, so the connection is no problem.

  • How to manage music from an external hdd on iTunes?

    Hello everyone.
I will try to keep it simple in order to be easy to understand...
I have my entire music on an External Drive: WD MY PASSPORT.
I found around here that, if I press OPTION while I move a music folder to itunes, it doesn't copy the music to the itunes folder which was great. Then I found that was an option on properties that allowed me to unable the "auto-copy" of the music I load on itunes to the itunes folder. So that was pretty useful.
BUT the problem I am facing now is the fact that, if my music files doesn't have the right information on them, they load in a disordered way on itunes and I can't modify their info from itunes because it is shown as blocked.
SO! how can I manage my music (manage = modify their info in order to arrange them in the right albums) without copying it to my mac??
I need to do this because, I still having a macbook pro with a 750gb hdd but I am looking foward to get an SSD, so I can't have it loaded with all my music
    Thanks!!

  • How do I copy from one external HDD to another HDD?

    Hi
I have two external hard drives - an Iomega eGo 500gb Mac specific portable drive with firewire and an Iomega 1TB MiniMax.
My problem is that I can only get the iMac to recognise one at a time - never at the same time, and I'd like to back up what I have on the eGo to the MiniMax. I can't dump what I have on the eGo to the iMac HDD first cos it's not big enough.
    So...
Please could anyone advise how I can do this? It should be fairly simple if only the iMac recognised both Can I plug the eGo into the back of the MiniMax and do it that way?
    Many thanks
    Rich.

    YES!!!
They both have firewire 800 ports and I plugged the eGo directly into the back of the MiniMax through its 800 port (the MiniMax isthen plugged into the iMac through its 400 port) and they both came up on the finder!
It was then simply a drag and drop.
Thank you so much for that reply - it was most helpful and now my data is safe.

  • SSRS How to grant BROWSE permission for reports for all the application users?

    Hello,
    Problem Statement
I need to allow all of my application users to browse the SSRS reports via logging onto the Report Manager and to some other I even want them to use Report Builder to modify & upload the report.
    How could I achieve this.
    Environment & Current implementation
We use SQL Server 2012 reporting services.
Custom authentication has been implemented using IAuthenticationExtension Interface. For more details, please refer
    this msdn link.
Currently, for each new user created in the application, the admin has to manually give BROWSER role to the username to enable that newly created user to browse the reports.
Is there any way in which we can give "everyone" the BROWSE permission and get rid of this manual permission granting process?
Please feel free to ask for any additional information you need to help me on this issue.
    Thanks!

    Hi vinaypugalia,
According to your description, you want to grant permissions for users to access report server in a batch, right?
In your scenario, you can use
script files( AddItemSecurity.rss and ConfigureSystemProperties.rss )with the Reporting Services SOAP API to assign permissions. It’s better that you add those users to a user group then run those script.
