How to handle an invisible character in a string?

Hi,
I have an interesting situation-
select bac_person_id, length(bac_person_id) from bkmap_personid_stg where BAC_PERSON_ID like '%27136317%'
The result is -
BAC_PERSON_ID|LENGTH(BAC_PERSON_ID)
27136317|     9
I don't know what is the invisible character here?
It is certainly not a blank character as trim is not working -
select * from bkmap_personid_stg where trim(BAC_PERSON_ID) = '27136317'
no records!!
But substr does give me the resullt -
select * from bkmap_personid_stg where substr(BAC_PERSON_ID,1,8) = '27136317'
How can I know which is the last character? and How to handle it?

girija_pathak wrote:
How can I know which is the last character? and How to handle it?You use the DUMP() function in SQL in order to see the actual content of the column.
E.g.
select DUMP(bac_person_id) from bkmap_personid_stg where bac_person_id like '%27136317%'
The decimal character values will be displayed - enabling you to see where and what control characters characters exist in the string value for that column.

    Hi ,
    I  am dealing with EDI data  and I am taking as input and creating out put as xml
    but when I am opening the file in  XML spy its gving some error  like.
    " Your file contains two (2)  characters thats should not be present in the file as  using the Unicode UTF-8  encoding/
    The offending characters are :
    ä (0xE4), ® (0xAE)
    let me know how to handle.
    regards

    Hi Ram,
    the question is how do you exactly create the file and what is your type  of the  system (Unicode or Non-Unicode) in which you created it  ?
    The content of the file is Non-Unicode (ISO-8859-1):
    E4 = U+00E4 : LATIN SMALL LETTER A WITH DIAERESIS
    AE = U+00AE : REGISTERED SIGN
    However XML expects UTF-8 by default and there the special characters are encoded differently.

  • How to handle user-defined character in java??

    Dear all,
    i am new to internalization and localization.
    i am now porting an application from vb.net to java.
    the vb.net version can handle (input/output [to file, screen, database] ...etc) user defined character (charset is big5 + extra characters) transparantly.
    what i need to do is update the file EUDC.tte in windows (which seems have native charset codepoint to unicode codepoint info) ..
    could anybody tell me how can i achieve the same thing in java??

    do you have example / sample for me to follow???? I googled for "java charsetprovider example" and got one as the first hit.
    btw, is it possible to replace the default big5 charset implementation with my own one so that the existing code can take advantage of the my own charset classes???You don't want to replace the default, just specify which one to use when needed. Pretty much any operation that involves charsets lets you specify which one to use. If your current code relies on the default, then you should change that.

  • How to handle czech special character

    Hi,
    I have a table where i save description for a status code in different languages. I need to save for Czech language. I have changed the language in toolbar in windows. However the sap system is not accepting few characters(although it is accepting others).
    E.g- I need to save VYTVOŘENO. When i enter this value in transaction se16 under its corresponding field name , what is see is VYTVO?ENO.
    In the same way, when i save ZPRACOVÁNÍ, it accepts the two special characters and i see the exact text.
    Can anyone tell me why specific characters are not getting accepted.

    Hi,
    Please check whether the codepage for Czech language has been installed.

  • How to identify a linefeed character in a string

    I have a table with some data in a VARCHAR2 column that contains linefeed characters.
    These were entered by users pressing 'return' when in a web text box.
    I want to get rid of these using the REPLACE function, but I'm having trouble identifying them.

    I am double clicking on the number of a string and I need to get the number as the output.
    I have string  like
    String1 : "Account Number 19292 is closed"  I am double clicking on 19292
    I want the output as 19292
    String2 : "AccountNumber19292isclosed"   I am double clicking on 19292
    I want the output as 19292
    String3: "Account Number1929 2 isclosed"  I am double clicking on 1929
    I want the output as 1929 and not 19292
    String4 :"Account Number 1929 2is closed" I am double clicking on 2
    I want the output as 2.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Raju

    Hi Raju,
    All possible solutions should more or less do the following two steps:
    <ol>
    <li>Check if at the given offset is a number: If yes, retain all consecutive numeric characters from the offset; otherwise stop.</li>
    <li>Retain any consecutive numeric characters preceding the number at the given offset and remove all other characters</li>
    </ol>
    Pretty trivial stuff, but the interesting challenge is actually to come up with the solution with least amount of coding (and ideally still understandable). I have a solution that is pretty short, though not really obvious for people not knowing about regular expressions...
    So here's the coding (relevant part in the form) and a quick test harness to check out what it does:
    data:
    TXT type STRING,
    NUM type STRING,
    OFF type I,
    LEN type I.
    TXT = '0Account12 Number 345 6 78isclosed9.9'.
    LEN = strlen( TXT ).
    do LEN times.
      OFF = SY-INDEX - 1.
      perform EXTRACT_NUMBER using    TXT
                                      OFF
                             changing NUM.
      write: /(3) OFF, ':', (5) NUM, TXT(OFF) inverse no-gap, TXT+OFF.
    enddo.
    * Return number at given offset in string (empty if no number present)
    form EXTRACT_NUMBER using    TXT        type STRING
                                 VALUE(OFF) type I
                        changing NUM        type STRING.
      NUM = TXT.
      replace regex '^(\d+).*$' in section offset OFF of NUM with '$1'.
      if SY-SUBRC = 0.
        replace regex '^.*[^\d](\d*)$' in NUM with '$1'.

    I think this should match your requirements. Let's see if somebody comes up with a solution with less lines...

  • How to get each character in a string

    as in 'C' we use arrays to get each character of a string stored in array.how can we get each character of a string stored in a variable.

    Hi,
    For that you need to do offset.
    for example one variable called VAR contains string 'HUMERAH'.
    if you want each character of that string then you need to decalre as many variable as the number of string.
    like
    data : var1(1),
             var2(1),
    var(3),
    var(4).
    var1 = var+(1).
    var2 = var+1(1).
    var3 = var+2(1).
    var4 = var+3(1).
    now var1,var2,var3,var4. contains the single characters.

  • Occurence of character in a string

    How can i find how many occurrence of a character in a string?
    Let's say: 010101010101010: there is 8 0 in that string.

    Here's just a different take on the same old problem, tested on 10g ... ;-)

                 , ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY SUBSTR(t.col1, LEVEL, 1)) rn
              FROM t

    CONNECT BY PRIOR rn = rn - 1

  • How to handle national character set datatypes in oracle?

    Thanks in advance

    And for data manipulation, append "N" the literal values being used in the command.
    The "N" indicates that the string is to be treated as Unicode Text.
    For Example: insert into TableName (ColumnName) values (N'ValueToBeInserted');

  • How to handle special character in SAP CRM

    Hi all,
    I am facing a problem on SAP CRM Web UI - Contact Creation - When a special character is inserted on address fields of Business
    Partner (e.g. ` ~ ^ etc.), the interface does not understand this character and changes it to a TRIANGLE on pressing enter key.
    Kindly guide as how to handle it or something is missing in terms of (note or patch).
    I am running on SAP CRM 7.0
    Thanks,
    Pradeep Singh Dhadwal

    Hi Pradeep.
    At the end of the day, a character is stored as a byte sequence on disk, and a code page defines the mapping between the byte sequence and any given character.The code page determines what character you can see and enter, therefore different code pages map different characters to the same byte sequence.
    I suggest you to first check if your system is a Unicode system by checking the System menu->Status option->Unicode system field. I'll assume it is.
    Then, please run report RSCP0018 (optionally also RSCPINST and then select Current NLS config pushbutton).
    These reports will show you the actual configuration of languages and code pages of your Application Server. Please check that the correct languages and code pages are configured. If you need to know more about code pages configuration, please check Note 42305, which explains pretty well the whole process.
    Kind regards, and good luck.

  • Pages: On the new version of Pages, I can't select the invisible character "return". I need to copy and past it on "Find and replace". How can I do that? Thanx.

    To change all the "-" by — that starts a dialogue on a book, I used to copy and past "Return" + "-" to ensure that all the "-" will not be change. But on the new version of Page if I select the "Return" character, and past it on "Find", the "Space" is appearing. How to select the "Return" character ? hanks for your help.

    Select a song. Hit command-I (Mac) or Ctrl-I (Windows). In the pane which opens select the 'Artwork' tab. Drag an image to the space.
    Or, select an album: same keystroke. In the pane which opens is a space labelled 'Artwork' - drag an image there.

  • How to handle special characters in NWDI

    Dear All
    I am trying to update the Description from JSP form. Through JCO we are calling the RFC of ABAP. We are passing these description from Java to RFC of ABAP and this RFC update the text in Database.
    We have noticed that if there is some special character in description like as : š or ž, complete description is not getting updated in to the SAP database.
    Can anyone help me how to handle these special characters in Java. There may be N number of special characters. We want to generalize it. We want to replace these characters by s and z respectively.
    For example : We want to update this description.
    AP147. Poslati finalnu dokumentaciju za uvo&#273;enje paketa (implementacijsku instrukciju i sve popratne datoteke).
    WHile updated text is as follows :
    APPLERR H'4301 H'FA03 H'254C na Zagreb TC4 rije
    N01TCADG-0052 u bloku UPDC vi
    Uspje
    sastanku isporu
    AP147. Poslati finalnu dokumentaciju za uvo

    Bhavishya

    Hi Bhavishya,
    Apparently your SAP database isn't configured to support Unicode. That would be the first solution to your problem, but I can imagine it's a bit drastic to convert your DB.
    A second solution would be to encode the input description to ASCII before storing it in the database. When reading from the database, decode again to Unicode. This way, no information is lost. A suitable encoding would be Base64. e.g.
    String description = "šunday žebra";
    String descriptionBase64 = new sun.misc.BASE64Encoder().encode(
      description.getBytes("UTF-8")); // ""
    // store descriptionBase64 in the DB
    // later, when reading descriptionBase64 from the DB
    String description2 = new String(
      new sun.misc.BASE64Decoder().decodeBuffer(descriptionBase64), "UTF-8");
    Instead of using Sun's implementation, a better alternative is to use the open source implementation
    org.apache.commons.codec.binary.Base64 from Commons Codec .
    The 3rd approach is indeed to normalize the description by replacing all special characters with their ASCII equivalent. A rather easy solution is as follows:
    String description = "šunday žebra";
    String descriptionNormalized = sun.text.Normalizer.normalize(
      description, sun.text.Normalizer.DECOMP, 0).replaceAll(
      "[^p{ASCII}]", "");
    sun.text.Normalizer decomposes the string, e.g. "éàî" becomes "e´a`i^", after which non-ASCII characters are being removed using a regular expression.Again, note that it's usually a bad idea to use sun.* packages, see note about sun.* packages. The above code only works with J2SE 1.4 and J2SE 5.0, but it breaks in J2SE 6.0 (where
    java.text.Normalizer became part of the public API ;-). A good open source implementation can be found here: ICU4J (com.ibm.icu.text.Normalizer).
    Kind regards,
    /Sigiswald
