How to handle data whilst reformatting HDD and external HDD

Hi folks,
I'd like to reformat my external HDD (200GB) back to one partition from two. I'd also like to reformat my Mini's HDD (160GB) back to one partition (I don't want the windows partition).
My personal data on the Mini HDD is about 2.7GB, so that's easily put to a DVD for reinstallation afterwards, and I'm sure an archive installation will be relatively idiot proof.
The data on the external HDD is all my music and photos, plus data backups, some software, and some installers etc. In total, it's around 136GB.
With the windows partition on my Mini taking up 16GB, I have available space on the Mac formatted partition of 104GB.
I had the idea to borrow a friend's new and unused external HDD, with the thought simply to drag my data there, but it was with the promise that I reformat it back to Windows NFTS for him, which I think I find is not supported from OSX 10.4, so I can't use his kit.
Can anyone see a trick I'm missing, before I go and burn onto twenty-odd DVDs, and whilst on that subject, is there an inbuilt Mac OSX process for burning my data - I can't see a burn option from within the windows when I'm navigating to the external HDD?
Many thanks,
Matt

Thanks for the suggestions.
My friend already had to return the first drive, which his PC wouldn't recognise, and this unit is the replacement, straight from its sealed box, so I can't put him anywhere near that dark place again after he's done me a favour...
Unfortunately, the computer disk space isn't sufficient: I have 136GB of data held externally, and only 120GB available locally, plus at near 100% capacity, I wouldn't want to trust the OS not to fall over.
I can see that I can copy a large proportion of it over to the Mini, which reduces DVD burn, but again, is there a quick DVD burn from external HDD? Can't see much of use in Disk Utility.

• How to share my mac and external hdd?

Hey
I was wondering about something.
I have a mac at home, with an external HDD connected. Is there some way that i can get access to the mac HDD and external HDD through the web from another computer (probably a PC)? The thing is that i often can't bring my MacBook with me, and therefore has to access some files from remote access. I have had a look on several guides, but they don't solve the problem, as i don't have the "FTP-sharing" tab in System Preferences -> Sharing.
Any way to solve this? Btw, my mac is connected to a pretty fast broadband, so the connection is no problem.

• Model of how APEX handles data (values)?

Reference {thread:id=2486655}
I'm trying to get a model of how APEX handles data (values). There are several places(?) that data (values) can exist. Or so it seems. I'm trying to understand how these work -- to put all the pieces together.
Question:
A) Where data can be?
1) In the database
2) In the session
3) Rendered -- and hence displayed on the screen, if a displayed value -- but not in the session
4) In perhaps(?) some working memory pool(?) but different from the page rendered values I see on the screen?
5) Other?
Why do I think this is relevant?
Question:
B) If there are rendered values and session values different from the rendered values, then when code executes, which of these values (rendered or session) is it executing against?
And maybe the answer is, "You don't understand what's going on." Yes, "Exactly!" Hence the question.
Best wishes,
Howard

Howard (DBA in Training) wrote:
I'm putting this together now. For example:
I set the value of a Page Item (say, :P2_DATA) to "BEFORE" in a Before Region process and change it to "AFTER" in an After Region Process. 'BEFORE' was displayed on the screen but 'AFTER' was in the session state. So I see that PL/SQL changes these values in the session state. But it doesn't "go back" to change the HTML after the region has been rendered -- hence we see BEFORE shown on the screen. (I'll have to think about what a Dynamic Action does.)
Also, if a page item has a default value, say 'DEFAULT' then that value doesn't get into the session state. At least, not with my current settings. Oh, that explains a lot of confusion!! I suppose there's a logical reason for this but who would expect default values to be differently from other PL/SQL operations on the item?
Questions:
1) So why does a default value not get put into the session state?Several reasons, among them:
*1. When/why is the value required?* Region items (and thus their source and default values) are rendered in region/item sequence order. The item's source/default value would therefore not be available in session state until it's rendering point. This is frequently later in page show processing than the value is actually required, such as the common use case of including a data value in the page or region title. Setting the value in a Before Header/Regions computation or process makes it available as required before the item is actually rendered.
*2. The rendered page might not be submitted.* Default values are typically set when a page will create a new row. Consider the situation where the user clicks a "Create" button and is presented with an order entry form containing several default values. They then decide they don't want to create a new order after all, and navigate away from the form page via some mechanism that uses a redirect rather than a submit (such as a default "Cancel" button). This means that no page submit processing is performed, and generally that no session state management is performed. If the default values were set in session state, the order entry page would contain the default values for the non-existent order despite the user never submitting it. This may have unwanted side-effects if these values are referenced elsewhere in the application, and therefore would require extra session state management to be built into the application.
*3. A rendered item might not be submitted with the page.* Per the HTML specification, the values of disabled controls unchecked checkboxes are not POSTed on page submit. Consider a situation where a checkbox item is set with several default values, but the application requires that the checkboxes be cleared and disabled by a dynamic action if the user chooses certain options from a select list. In this case, on page submission no values are submitted into session state for the checkbox item. If the defaults had been set in session state, then the application would be in an inconsistent state, with the user-selected option indicating that none of the checkboxes were checked, but with session state holding values showing that they were. This would require additional processing to ensure that the application's state was consistent before saving it to the database.1
2 & 3 are particularly significant in basic wizard-generated applications. Doing things in this way, the wizard-generated DML and navigation "just works", without the need for additional session state management.
2) Is there a Page Item setting that causes the default value to be saved to the session state? No. Hopefully the explanations above provide sufficient reason to show why this is genearlly not desirable. On the rare occasions when it is required, set the session state value using a computation or process.
1 There are other reasons—mainly security related—that make it good practice to perform such checks in more complex and internet-facing applications anyway.

• How to populate data for 2LIS_40_REVAL, 2LIS_43_POSCAS and 2LIS_44_POSREC

Hi
How to populate data for 2LIS_40_REVAL, 2LIS_43_POSCAS and 2LIS_44_POSREC datasources at RSA3?
I'm very new to retail BI.
I think there is no setup tables for Retail infosources.
Any IDoc or BAPI activation is required or other procedure?
We are in BI-700 SAPKW70015 support pack R/3 side
and SAP_BW 700 Support pack SAPKW70016 &
BI_CONT 703 Support pack SAPKIBIIP9 BI side
Can anyone guide me how to load data?
Points assured
Thanks in advance
Ramana P

Dear Ramana,
There is no setup table for POSCAS and POSREC.This has to be popuated with a BADI Implementation.
As of PlugIns 2002_1_470 and 2002_2_470, POS data is update into BW the 2LIS_44_POSREC and 2LIS_43_POSCAS extractors using a BADI. To be able to update data into BW, the relevant implementation for the BADI must be activated in each case. You can activate the implementation in transaction SE19. The implementations are as follows:
POS_EX_REC_PI2003_1 for extractor 2LIS_44_POSREC
POS_EX_CAS_PI2003_1 for extractor 2LIS_44_POSCAS
Once the activation of BADI , create the back ground jobs for the 44 application and the data is pushed into Delta queue and it can be loaded into BI .
Hope this helps you.
Thanks,
Krishna Charan

It depends on how often you'd be writing info to the hd, but my guess would be not long!
The iPod hd isn't robust enough to use in this manner (where it needs to keep spinning up a great deal).
Plus, a restore is very often a cure for iPod ills and that means a total loss of any data stored on it.
With the price of ext hd as cheap as they are nowadays, in my view it just isn't worth using an iPod in this manner.

• Is it possible to make OSX see the internal and external HDD's as one large drive?

Is it possible to make OSX see the internal and external HDD's as one large drive? For instance, hypothetically, could I have a Mac Mini Server with 2TB of internal storage and 2 external 4TB Thunderbolt HDD's, and make the OS see them all as one large 10TB drive?

Yes it is possible to do this, but this is not recommended since a disconnection of the external drives would lead to a destabilized system. Its best to do this only with internal drives, or secondarily with only external drives that are set up separately from the boot drive.
However, if you do wish to do this then you can combine any local set of volumes into one large "spanned" hard drive using Apple's CoreStorage volume management service. It does take a few steps to set up and requires use of the Terminal and Disk Utility. Here is a tutorial on how to do this: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57550128-263/how-to-make-a-custom-corestora ge-drive-in-os-x/

• [Forum FAQ] Removable media and external HDD

Scenario
There are two conceptions about which we would have confusion in some particular scenarios: removable media and external HDD. Here are two examples:
If you need to make a USB storage device perform AutoRun, the device must not be marked as a removable media device and the device must contain an Autorun.inf file and a startup application.
Answer File Search on removable read/write media.
Definition and Research
The definition of the removable media and external HDD is shown below:
The removable media device setting is a flag contained within the SCSI Inquiry Data response to the SCSI Inquiry command. Bit 7 of byte 1 (indexed from 0) is the Removable Media Bit (RMB). An RMB set to zero indicates that the device is not a removable
media device. An RMB of one indicates that the device is a removable media device. Drivers obtain this information by using the StorageDeviceProperty request.
External HDDs typically connect via USB; variants using USB interface generally have slower data transfer rates when compared to internally mounted hard drives connected through SATA.
That is, the removable media has a device property attach itself, from the results on Linux and Windows OS, we can see the difference between removable media and
generic external disk:
Here are the outputs of dmesg log on Linux OS:
sd 10:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI disk
(generic external disk)
sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
(USB flash drive)
Here is the output on Windows OS:
We use following command to get the media type of physical drive:
Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_DiskDrive | Format-Table Name,Model, MediaType
Conclusion
From the device’s property, we cannot say that external device is equal to removable media totally. Removable media is associated with the RMB flag, of course, RMB is embedded in device itself.
Now, back to our common issue, when you supply an answer file on a USB external HDD, it would not recognize your device as a removable media, because the StorageDeviceProperty gets value 0 of RMB to indicate this is not a removable media. In this situation,
supply an answer file on a USB flash drive (UFD) or floppy disk would fix this issue.

Ive had it on my Ibook before and then moved it to the HDD because of Space Shortage, and then just added as ive aquired more music. Idon't Really Remeber but i think it worked before without any hiccups. oh well otherwise i can just delete those files because theyre only single files here and there. but its quite irritating because they don't seem to have any kind of corruption.

• Is it better to daisy chain an apogee duet and external hdd or...

...setup an audio interface and external hdd to two separate bus ports? I ask because I going to be purchasing gear to set up my first home recording studio and I am torn between the MacBook Pro 15" and 17". The 17" comes with an Express Card slot (which I could use to utilize more bus ports), but is less portable and a little more expensive. The 15" is ideal in size, but lacks two firewire ports and Express Card possibilities. I know firewire is a must for a 7200 rpm external drive, but I have read very negative reviews about USB powered audio interfaces. Is daisy chaining a good idea? Are USB as bad as I've come to understand in terms of clarity and quality? Is the 17" my best option? I am looking at a starter's interface, like an Apogee Duet. The new Apogee One looks intriguing, but again, it is USB.

+1 for daisy-chaining Duet to Glyph. For audio work the 17" is the best option these days. The ExpressCard slot is invaluable for using Universal Audio plugins or powering an additional firewire device above and beyond the audio interface/hard drive, such as the Focusrite Liquid Mix.

• How do I Retrieve imovie projects from and external drive back into my mac internal drive

How do I Retrieve imovie projects from and external drive back into my mac internal drive?
Thank You

Every working drive, Internal or External, should produce an Icon on your Desktop. If you cannot see those, click on the Desktop (to get Finder) and choose Preferences off the Finder Menu. The general pane has checkboxes for "Show these items on the Desktop:"
Double click the Icon for your External Drive to open it. Open the folders on it until you find the Items you want to copy. Drag them to the Icon of your Internal Drive, or open the folder where you want them to land and drop them in there.
A drive that does not appear on the desktop after you have asked it to may be damaged. But it would be smart to do a Restart to see if it is recognized again at next Startup.

Yes,
Disconnect everything hooked up to the PC except the keyboard, mouse and monitor.
Then use this method to flash the BIOS. It is the safest way to go.
USB Device BIOS Flashing in DOS
DOS Flash (DOSFlash.exe, FlshUefi.cpu) is the DOS-compatible System BIOS flash utility that can be used from a DOS bootable storage device (where "DOS" refers to any of a number of compatible operating systems such as FreeDOS, MS-DOS or DR-DOS). FlshUefi.cpu is the required driver for DOSFlash.exe. To flash the System BIOS from a bootable USB storage device, you will need to copy the contents of the DOS Flash folder to the USB device, boot the PC from the USB device, and execute the DOSFlash application. To see a more complete description of the DOS flash utilities, view DOSFlash.txt located in the DOS Flash folder. This folder also contains the required binary image of the BIOS. The binary image file is named xxx_MMmm.bin where "xxx" is the BIOS family, "MM" is the major version number, and "mm" is the minor version number. This file can be copied to the root directory of any USB removable medium for use with the F10 setup "Flash System ROM" option

The links on this post don't work. I copied the section from the BIOS flashing instructions for the specific section you need.

• How to handle data that got from SAP by Webservice?

Hi, Gurus.
I am working on IFbA with ABAP and Adobe LiveCycle Designer.
I've developed a function module in R/3 system and created webservice, connected the WSDL address to the form. The problem is how can i handle data that got from SAP by Webservice?
It's Ok if i bind the dataconnection node to the form element, but how can i handle data without binding to the form element? I mean that how can i use the data retrieved from Webserivce in the Javascript, please give me some sample code or script method.
Thanks.

Hi Yang,
If you are using Web Service, then the binding will be done automatically.
It can't grow automatically, what else should i do to achieve this?
1.Select the table(make sure you are not selecting subform) in Hierarchy view
2. Under table select the Row which is having the required fileds for data
3. In the Binding of that row, check the checkbox "Repeat Row for each item data" and under that check the Min Count which will set the default row **** to 1

• How to handle data in a request object

I want to know the best way to handle data received from sql query to display on a jsp page and for page navigation. If I store data in a request object then the data is lost after displaying first page. When user hits Next link to view more data I need to do another query to database which I want to avoid. I display only 20 rows at a time. So if my query returns 100 rows I display 5 pages. I need to retain data when user hits next to view other pages. What is the best way to handle this?
