How to have iCal Server share one or more calendars?

Hello everybody.
I'm really new to iCal Server, and I'd like to be able to create and share one or more calendars for a couple of users. I'm running Mac Mini with OSX SL Server 10.6.5 and have iMacs with the same OS.
Any how-to or such, to read and step-by-step configure the stuff?
I'm already looking at the Apple PDF (from Resources) but I'm stuck where it tells me to create the SRV record: I don't know which fields to fill in with the infos provided.
Any help will be much appreciated!
Thanks,
F.

Yes, it is Flavio.
There are other threads that claim you can disregard the manual in this respect. I tried disregarding it. It'll seem to work. Then within days users will complain of intermittent (1) "calendar not found", (2) "lack of permissions", and (3) "conflicts with client-side versus server-side" errors.
Creating the SRV is essential in this, because it's registering the iCal service with DNS, and DNS is telling the client how to involve the server in the service. To be technically accurate, the server does have a default response when the SRV doesn't exist, so, yes, it will work at times..., but it's hard to explain this to your users when they're asking you about clicking through error dialogs every five minutes. "What do I do here? Should I be worried about this?" You'll be pulling your hair out. I was. Once I had the SRV up, though, the errors have entirely disappeared.
In addition to the things in my last post, having Push Notifications working is also wonderful. Follow the steps in the manual, but basically it involves turning Push on before starting up iCal.
Lastly, there's the question of moving users' old calendars (which are client-based) over to the iCal server (which is server-based): You can't just import-then-export, or you'll find other, nagging errors (basically of type "3", above). As far as I've been able to tell, if the user's calendar contains events where they're not the organizer (and it will), you'll get errors because the user has now assumed an event they don't own. The errors you'll get are basically the server asking, "Who owns this thing? I don't get it."
Sadly, the only way around this is I've found is for the end-user to context-click on each old event and move it to the new calendar. When the calendar options there are ghosted, they'll know they have an event they don't own.
But once you get past this point, it works beautifully. Users get really excited, because they now see the wonderful opportunities they now have. And that makes you feel it was worth it (especially when you think of how much they'd be spending on Exchange).

in Ical i lost one of my calendar groups, how do I get it back.  I have a time capsule.
    thanks

    salvsalinas,
Look in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library Folder, where you will find a "Calendars" Folder, which can be replaced using Time Machine.
Make sure that you quit iCal before attempting to replace the folder, and choose a timeline when the group last existed.
    Good Luck.

You can have one icloud account and a different itunes account on the phone. I have my icloud account and a shared itunes account. He does not have to use the new icloud account as is ID in itunes and app store. He can keep using the old one.

I need to share one of my calendars with a co-worker.  There is no publish option.

Only 'On My Mac' calendars can be published to a web page, but calendars listed under your MobileMe login name for syncing can be shared privately (editable if required) with other MobileMe subscribers, or publicly (non-editable) for general access using a CalDAV client such as iCal or Google Calendar.

  • How to make iCal Server work both behind a firewall and externally

I've got iCal server running with a DNS record pointing to the external IP of our server and the appropriate ports open in the firewall. This is working fine. However, I can't seem to figure out how to get it recognized on the internal LAN. I tried activating DNS on the server using example.com and the actual domain name that is being used externally, but neither seemed to help get the iCal server to be recognized internally. I know there is some (probably simple) step I am missing somewhere, but I have not been able to figure it out. I've been reading the server docs and haven't been able to pinpoint what I am missing so I'm hoping someone here might be able to explain to me what the necessary steps might be.
Please try to explain this as if you're speaking to someone who is really dumb, because that's how I feel right now.
    Thanks!

So you have an external static public IP, a firewall NAT, and an internal static private IP, right?
This sounds like an IP routing issue, or a DNS issue, depending on how you want to deal with it.
Either tweak your local DNS to point to your local private IP for the iCal server directly and not to the external IP address, or configure your local IP network default gateway and IP routing to allow IP to route the external IP address request out and back in through the NAT again (which is where you're probably running off the rails here), or see if iCal will allow you go go after an internal network host name in your internal DNS with your internal private IP address, or (as a test) directly after the local iCal server by its private IP address.
A whole lot of Mac OS X Server really only works "right" if you have IP and DNS configured appropriately. (I was going to write "correctly" there, but there's usually no one "correct" configuration when dealing with IP networking.)

  • How to use iCal Server with clients?

Ok, so since I can't find this anywhere... How do I use iCal Server with other desktop clients? I've selected the user, enabled calendaring, the user can authenticate in web-based group calendars. But then I'm stuck.
How do I give them their own calendar?
In iCal, I go to Accounts and try and enter the info but it fails every time. I tried the dns name like so: "calendar.example.edu" but it generates an error. But the user can log in to the web calendar for groups. Where is the users individual calendar located?
The help menu ignores that field as if it's not needed, but then it fails because the calendar doesn't know where the server is. The clients can't all be OD bound, so this has to work outside of Open Directory. According to Apple other CalDAV clients can connect too. How? Computers just don't "connect" on their own.
    Anyone know the answer?

I was getting the same error when I tried to subscribe to a calendar using:
    Subscribe to: http://myserver.example.com:8008/
    principals/users/usershortname
I found that if I added a trailing slash to the URL then it would work :
    Subscribe to: http://myserver.example.com:8008/
    principals/users/usershortname/
(the way I found this was to navigate via the web browser to http://myserver.example.com:8008 then authenticate as a user, then navigating through to http://myserver.example.com:8008/principals/users/ where you can see all the user names all with a trailing slash after them)
    hope this helps

  • Mavericks server share public read-only calendar

I've setup the Calendar service on Mavericks Server.  I have a CalDAV user setup to create calendar entries.  That's all working.  These entries show in Calendar on my computers, and they sync just fine.
Now, I want to make this a public calendar, that anyone can view, but not edit.
When I try to publish ("share") this calendar, the option for "Public" is not available, as it is with iCloud.  Is there any way to publish a public calendar from Mavericks Server?

Activate WebDAV and see the topic "Publish and unpublish calendars" in the built-in help for Calendar.

  • How does my entire family share one account?

I have a wife and 2 kids. How can we all share the same library on our iPhones and iPads without having to share the exact same songs, apps., etc..  For example, if my son downloads a song, I want it to go into the "main" library, but I don't necessarily want it on my iPhone.  If I take a picture with my iPhone, I want it to go to my iPad using cloud, bit I don't want it to go to my other family members' and vice versa? Same with my songs, apps, etc.  Please help.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Firstly iCloud and iTunes are different services, if you each have your own iCloud account you won't get each others mail, calendars and Photostream photos etc.
Even though you each have a separate iCloud account, there is no reason you can't all share an iTunes account. You can each have your own settings for syncing with iTunes on the computer, so you can have exactly what you want on each device. To stop new purchases made on one device going to another, turn off automatic downloads on each device from settings > store > automatic downloads.

  • How to make iCal Server events viewable on the web calendar?

    Hi,
I can create, edit and view events on the web calendar.
I can create, edit and view my own events via iCal.
How can I set it up so we can see all the calendars from our group on the web calendar? It's empty now other than what's entered via the web calendar.
Is there really no integration between the two?

I too thought web group calendar was subscribe only in iCal until I ran across the procedure at
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080410162942908
in the 4th comment down by protean. With a couple of additions I was able to post an event to the web group calendar and have an update on the web post back to the iCal calendar. My additions were needed to get the results as posted in the comment:
    1) make sure Enable Calendaring is selected for all group members,
    2) refresh iCal to ensure all group members are visible in the Personal Server Calendar Address Pane before adding the group calendar account,
    3) add all members in step 3 of the procedure including yourself, however, if the owner of the group (e.g. diradmin) is not a member then don't add it,
    4) prior to step 6 of the procedure you can verify the group is visible as in step 8 in the Personal Server Calendar delegation before deleting the group account; if not visible then you don't have to start from scratch, just work with the group account from step 1,
    5) the group calendar shows up in the left column list of calendars under Delegates calendars.
So I got this to work.
Then I setup a location in Directory.app with Delegates as the group. It shows up in iCal under Delegates calendar with the error notice
'Error While Refreshing Access to account "location title" is not permitted.'
So there is no calendar available for the location in iCal. The personal iCal account shows the Delegation of location and the Show checkbox is selected. The group is allowed to select the location on the web calendar and in the server iCal calendar. But the location doesn't indicate conflicts in the availability pane. Can someone tell me what might be missing?

  • How to have the spacebar do one thing on one frame and a different thing on a over?

I am making a game using flash, and I would like it so you could use the spaebar to skip the story. But the spacebar is also the characters ablity. How is this possible to do. Whenever I try I get lots of errors.
I am new to action script 3, please be kind.

One way would be to have a conditional that tests takes actions depending on which frame the file is currently in.
Another way would be to remove the listener for the keyboard for the first functionality and add a new keyboard listener when you want the different functionality.

  • How to have iMovie events in one single shared folder ?

    Hi,
I have an iMac configured with multi-user sessions (one per family member). I start with iMovie, and it seems that when working with events and projects, all data is located on personal user root folder.
My requirements are 1) to avoid duplication of data, and 2) allow every one to work with imported events.
I tried to locate all events & projects in the iMac shared folder, however iMovie does not recognize them anymore.
    What is the solution ?

    Good Morning tonitri,
I understand you want to share iMovie libraries, events and projects among different users on your iMac without duplicating or copying data to each user account.
My suggestion would be to use a large capacity external Thunderbolt, FireWire or USB drive for all of your video files so that everyone in your family has access to the libraries, imported clips, events, projects, and exported final movies that you create with iMovie.
You could organize the information any number of ways.  One way to start is to create a library for each family member on the external drive.
Take a look at the following resources for iMovie:

  • How to have all albums in one file

I have some albums where there are some duets. On the HD, no pble, all songs are in correct order but on the Ipod, when searching per album, I may only have 5 songs out of 10 as the other ones are filed under different artists name. Usually Mr ABC featuring DEF instead of all the songs under ABC folder. It is very annoying as I cannot listen a fuill album.
    Thanks

In iTunes you can select the songs in an Album at the same time, do a Get Info, then under Album Artist, enter the one name you want the album to be grouped under, e.g. "Mr. ABC" and all the "FEAT." songs will be nicely grouped under the single album even though the Artist tags might be different for each song.
Unfortunately, the 5th generation iPods do not have this same feature. So when you sync that album to your iPod it will be broken up into multiple artists like you noticed. I am not sure if that was taken care of with the newer Classic line of iPods or not.
So there is nothing you can do about it other than re-tagging all those songs in iTunes. For example, one common way around this is instead of:
    Title: This Is My Song
    Artist: Patrick Feat. My Dad
you would instead rename all the tracks so the Artist is the same and add the features artist to the song title like so:
Title: This Is My Song feat. My Dad
    Artist: Patrick
Otherwise you can just live with it on the iPod the way it is.
    Sorry,
    Patrick

  • How to have three prompts with one object?

    Dear collegues,
I am creating a report where I want to see an employees salary in three different periods, f.ex 11.2006, 08.2007 and 09.2007. This is no problem when I set these spesific periods as filters in the query. But how can these three periods be prompted values? So that the user can choose for which three periods he wants to see the salary?
I have used an object Month Year to try. I drag it into the filter area of the query three times, and gives it prompt-functionality and call them Date 1, Date 2, Date 3. When I try to run the query it just tells me "No data".. (BO 6.0)
    Is this possible?
Will sign points if you can help!
    regards Silje

    Hi Jaques,
    Thank you!
I want to distribute the three dates on three different columns, date 1, date 2, date 3. Is that possible with inList?
If I use OR, do I get all the dates and can distribute them in different columns?
(In this report we follow salary development of employees. The report shows the given salary at three different points of time for an employee).

  • How to have mail server automatically cc all email for a user to other acct

I have a user on my 4.9 Xserve who wants her email automatically send to another account. I set forwarding first, but her email client keeps asking her for a password (and hers doesn't work) and won't allow her to see past email. Is that normal? Anyway, I've shut off forwarding for now, and am wondering if it's possible to have it automatically cc'd to another account (send a copy, but don't interfere with her ability to manage the email in her normal account with an IMAP client). Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Be aware that you are about to enter the dark zone of Unix file editing. Once there, you may never want to come back. Your friends and relatives will spurn you and you will start to dress in dark clothes and listen to impenetrable music.
You can also screw up your whole system... but hey, who wants to live forever
If you have a skateboard, sit it on your desk, then switch off all other lights except for an anglepoise...
In Terminal, cd to postfix directory, and just for interest, list the files already there...
    cd /etc/postfix
    ls -l
You should see the main.cf one which you will edit later.
Create the new recipient_bcc file using 'pico', one of the built-in text editors. This is the easiest to start with because it contains on-screen help. There are others, including 'vi' which I would normally use. You will prefix the command with 'sudo' which temporarily makes you the 'super-user' (root) and needs the admin password. So...
    sudo pico recipient_bcc
Add the two email addresses, separated by a tab or space, on the left: the local email address, and on the right: the address to send copies to (BCCs). To edit existing text, use arrow keys. Save the file using ctrl-o, confirm filename, then exit (ctrl-x).
For postfix to be able to read this as a database, you need to 'postmap' it...
    sudo postmap recipient_bcc
To confirm, list the files and you will see the two new ones (ls -l).
Before editing the main.cf file, make a backup copy of it...
    sudo cp main.cf main.cf.bak
If you need to revert to the backup, you reverse the orig/target args...
    sudo cp main.cf.bak main.cf
Edit the main.cf file (sudo pico main.cf) and either 'next page' to bottom or enter '^_' (ctrl + underscore char) then specify line number 999.
    add the line...
    recipientbccmaps = hash:/etc/postfix/recipient_bcc
Postfix knows to use the postmaped .db file so you do not specify that one in the line.
    Save and exit file.
Reload the postfix main.cf configuration file...
    sudo postfix reload
Test it by sending an email to the user and watch the mail.log in Console app. You should see the BCC being sent to the other email address. If something has gone wrong, replace the main.cf with the backup, issue postfix reload, then try again.
Once you have confirmed it working, dance around the room playing air guitar and give high-fives to any innocent bystander.
