How to highlight one face in a photo

I have seen this done, but, so far I can't figure out how to:
Highlight one face (out of several) in a photo; e.g., use the ellipse or circle selection tool around the face, then make the background(?) around that face lighter the the surrounding areas (or apply a light tint to the selection).
I think it is done with a mask, but I can't get that to work.  I have tried searching the Help file.  I have tried searching this forum, but, apparently, I am not using the correct search citeria.  I have even tried reading through the Photoshop Classroom in a Book.
This is probably a very basic piece of knowledge, but at the moment, it is beyond me.  I could use some help with a step-by-step procedure.
I have Photoshop CS2 (v. 9.0.2) on a Dell Inspiron 6000 with a 1.5 Ghz Pentium M processor, 2 GB RAM, and Win XP/Pro SP3.
Thanks.

I like to brighten faces like this:
1.  Select the Dodge tool from the Tools panel.
2.  Set the tool to Midtones, a small percentage (say, 20%), and check the [ ] Protect Tones box.
3.  Paint over the centers of the faces you want to make stand out better.

  • How to make one edge of a photo transparent

    Hi,
I am doing a website and want to make one edge of a photo transparent to the background - such as http://www.aimeemann.com/
Does anyone know how I would do this?
    Thanks much!
    Nic

Double click the layer icon in the layers panel. Then hit the create mask button at the bottom of the panel (lower red circle). Then with the layer mask selected (upper red circle, notice the black outline shwoing you are working the mask, not the layer), use the gradient tool to make a gradient as shown in the icon preview. Then save for web as PNG24.

  • How to highlight one word?

    Hi
Is it possible to highlight one word with iWeb?
So far I am able to only highlight a whole paragraph.

I tried this and it appears to work. In iWeb open and the page you want to add the highlight go to the bottom of the page and choose shapes. The rectangle will work. This will show up in the middle of your page. Drag it down and reshape it over the word you want to highlight. Click on the inspector icon on the bottom right of the page and highlight the shapes icon. Click on the color fill and choose bright yellow (or what ever you like). The word you want to highlight will be "hidden" behind the yellow rectangle. Choose the opacity function in the same window as the color fill and move it to check if the rectangle is where you want it placed. With the yellow rectangle highlighted go up to the menu bar on the top of your screen and choose arrange- move to back. Bingo. Sounds hard but its not. Just verbose to describe.

  • Photoshop Elements 9 - how to highlight one colour in a black/white picture?

    hi guys
with which feature can I highlight just one object (one colour) when the rest of the picture is black/white?
    Thanks for your help!

Open a color image in Full Photo Edit
On the top menu click Layer >>Duplicate Layer >>OK
    Enhance >>Convert To Black & White >>OK
Add a layer mask by clicking on the layer mask icon at the bottom of the layers pallet.
Select a brush and adjust its size, then make sure your foreground color is set to black.
Gently brush over the area where you want to show the color from the background layer. If you make a mistake change the foreground color to white to erase what you just did, then switch back to black again.

  • How to: Crop one head onto another photo

I would like to simply crop a head from one photo and then paste it onto a different photo.  Once the head is on the new photo, I would like to adjust the head size to fit.  I used to have Roxio Photo Suite that would allow this very simply.  Is there a simple way to do this without having to match photo's resolution, size, etc...?

The image you transfer into the open image will adopt the open image's resolution. If the images are not the same resolution, the image being transferred will expand or shrink as part of this process. This can be a problem especially if the image being transferred has significantly less resolution than the open image. Your best bet is to match the image resolution beforehand using the Image Resize dialog. In this dialog, you can employ "resample" and choose the method of interpolation that works best for your circumstances.
    Info on interpolation resample methods:

Try to use a head that is at a similar angle as the original so it goes with the body.
Use the free transform commands to adjust the head.
There are several ways to do this although they are all pretty similar. Select head that is at a similar angle to the body. Lower the head's opacity or change the head layer to difference blend mode to help you align the new head on the body with the free transform commands. Either erase or mask out unwanted areas of new head. Use clone stamp if necessary.
There are lots of videos on YouTube on the subject of head swapping.
The one I have linked below is pretty easy to follow.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBUjELnSYHI&feature=related
The tutorial I linked above is made for Photoshop but the technique for doing this in Elements will be similar. Elements does not have the curves dialog so you might try using the levels command. You might also try the Enhance > Adjust Color > Adjust Color For Skin Tone.

Another difference is the command for create a clipping mask command in Elements is Ctrl + G if on a PC...Cmd + G if on a Mac. The video gives the Photoshop command. (If you have E8 or E9, you can find the command in the menu Layer<Create clipping mask. If you have E7 or below, you can find the command in the menu Layer<Group with Previous. The difference in the command is because Adobe changed the command name from Clipping Group to Clipping mask starting in PSE 8.)

How can I remove a person's face from a photo and then replace the spot with a person's face from another photo?

In Editor, go to the expert tab.
Open picture B, the one you wish to select the "replacement" face from to add to another picture.
Use one of the selection tools, e.g. selection brush, lasso tool, to select the face. You will see an outline ("marching ants") once the selection is complete
Go to Edit menu>copy to copy the selection to the clipboard
Open picture A, then go to Edit>paste
Use the move tool to position the face from picture B to cover the face on A
In the layers palette you should see picture A as the background layer, and face B on a separate layer

Someone told me just to remove the chip in clicking it to the trash can and voilá - it would be done. But as I did so, on the screen appeared a text which let me know, that that way had been the wrong one...
I should have clicked Finder plus something.... which I do not now remember but which was then not found behind the Finder.
So please would someone be so kind and tell me, where I can find explanations for the most simple functions. The manual I got does not include a clue.
    Thank you!

First make sure that no application is using or has open any files on the disk. Then:
Click and drag the disk icon on the desktop to the trash. Wait for the system to recognize the action, and the icon should disappear from the desktop. It is then safe to remove the device.
Alternatively, you can secondary click on the disk icon, and then primary click "Eject (name of disk)". Wait for the icon to disappear off the desktop, and then it is safe to remove the drive.
Here is a detailed help document on the subject.

How do I add multiple songs to an existing playlist from the (no longer called) Library? Highlighting multiple songs and clicking the "Add to" button will only add the one with the little arrow, not all the highlighted ones! I am using the "new" iTunes.

For the moment there isn't a way for us end-users to control what is "matched" or "uploaded." That is purely a result of Apple's server-side algorithms.
To re-add multiple songs at once simply highlight all the songs you want to re-add, then right-click (or Control+click) the list and choose "add to iCloud."

  • How do I make new albums in photos and move picture from one album to another

How do I make new albums in Photos and move photos from one album to another

At the moment you can't - though it should be possible (if it makes it into the final release) in iOS 5 which will be available sometime in the Autumn. Photos cannot currently be moved between albums on the iPad.
If  you sync separate folders from your computer you'll get an album for each of them on the iPad, and you have to sync all the folders/albums that you want together as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad (not including a folder in a sync is the way that you delete it from the iPad).

To print multiple photos on one page select the photos and print, select the printer, paper size, photo size (obviously the photos will have to be sized so the number you want will fit inclusing a small border) and click customize - in teh settings select multiple photos per page (the preview will reflect your selection) and click print - make any printer specific selections and click print to print
