How to I connect to my pc via network

Does anyone know how to connect to a pc? I set up sharing on my pc with the help of compaq tech support, I have pinged my mac from my pc and pinged my pc from my mac. I can share from pc by dragging files to the mac. But, I cannot connect to my pc. I have read the mac support pages and went to go / connect to server / and typed smb://ServerName/ShareName/
No luck. I know my sharing settings are correct on both the mac and pc. Windows sharing is on on the Mac. Sharing is on on the pc.
I have typed every combination under the sun, no luck. I have read every mac support document there is to read. I am beginning to feel for the first time that Macintosh support is inferior to PC support. Someone, please prove me wrong.

Thanks for your reply, I tried it but no luck. I have tried about 300 combinations. With smb, without, forward slashes, backward slashes, with server name and without share name, exactly as mac suggests, case sensitive, rebooting, on and on and on. I already have paid compaq tech support, and a network consultant another $75 bucks. This appears to be a dead end unless someone out there can think of some way to connect. I even tried connecting via Firefox and Safari, no luck there either. This is my last attempt to figure this out...and likely my last mac after years of loyal support.

Actually the reason to use Quantum SCSI tape recorder is to back-up big amount of data (propriety movies footage) both on PC (what is quite easy, using SCSII host adapter with VHDCI 68 connector) and iMac what seems to be not easy. All my search by Google leads to that conclussion, they finished production of SCSI-to-USB or FireWire because somebody stopped to produce chips to covert protocols. So even buying noe second-hand adapter, no guaranty it's still working with Lion (nobody is developing drivers anymore). Strange is, nobody or just a few are using SCSII (Ultra 320) devices (while the transfer is not bad, 320 MBps what is 2560 Mbps, so the only limitation is tape recording (some 80 MBps) not an interface. Using compression mode I can (and I do) record 1,6 TB of footage data. However quite slow, is safe and cheap, comparing with any HD storage solution. USB 2 is much more limited.
I'm using Time Capsule for buck-up. But even 3 TB one day will be full of data, then old back-ups will be eaten by new once, what is not good idea for archives. I'm using another 2TB NAS HD (2x2TB RAID 1), but this is also going to be full soon.
Of course, you are right, the option is another machine (OSX,Win,Linux or Solaris) equipped with SCSII controller. But this requires another machine, just for back-up time to time, and in practice iMac folders must be shared with that small auxiliary machine because amount of data practically excluding even temporary data collection on auxiliary machine. And it must be transfer by wire, not WIFI, my only network. Tape recording is in my case really good, professional solution, isn't it?
Anyway, if somebody has similar requirements as me, and found the solution for SCSI, please let me know. So far, follow Jan's idea, I'm thinking about some embeded mini PC, fanless, equipped with slot for SCSI, with SOME smart system on-board, to deal with iMac for type recording. The option is previous Apple model, but to be honest, I became Mac/OSX user 4 years ago. I fell in love with Mac, but my knowledge about previous models is based on Google....
My desk becomes full of boxes. Do you know how big Quantum TC-L42BX is ? Is very big. And now another box.....another keyboard....another screen... And one small adapter could solve the problem. Eh....

How can I connect to a VPN via PPTP?

I am a foreigner living in Taiyuan, the capital city of Shanxi Province, in China. I bought my macbook the summer of 2006. It still works perfectly except I cannot connect to the internet here at the university.
The internet here is split into two parts: local, and international. The ethernet connection allows me to access Chinese websites, but nothing else. It sounds counterintuitive but really, that's how it is. In order to get the rest of the world, all computers have to connect to a VPN via PPTP. Once this is established, viola, you have internet.
My problem is I cannot seem to connect to the VPN. I have used Internet Connect, I have created a VPN via PPTP, and put in all the right numbers...
the VPN IP is 202.207.128.115
the username is tyut
the password is tyut
But when I try to connect, it just says it can't. Nobody at the university has been helpful because they've never used a Mac before, and besides which, they aren't used to using a computer in English.
Can anyone help me? Or does anyone know how to get in touch with Apple Services in China (in English)?

Yeah, but that's not the problem here. I'm an English teacher at Taiyuan University of Technology (the irony does not escape me). The other teachers have PCs and can get full internet in their apartment. Since I have a mac, it's much harder for the school technicians to help me.

But I still can't load any pages from the VPN connection, just the regular ethernet connection (local internet). It doesn't work if I use IP addresses instead. :-/ I unselected "send all traffic over the VPN connection" because if it's selected, I don't even get local internet.
Looking online I found a possible fix, but it's for Windows XP. I don't know how to find the same settings on the Mac...For Windows XP:
1. Click Start -> Control Panel
2. Click on the Network and Internet Connections icon and then click "Network Connections". If your Control Panel is in classic view, simply double click the "Network Connections" icon.
3. Right click on the new VPN connection and select Properties
4. Select the "Networking" tab
5. Verify that Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is highlighted
6. Click on the Properties button
7. Within the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties window, click on the "Advanced..." button. Within the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window, REMOVE the check mark next to "Use default gateway on remote network"
8. Click "OK" to close all open windows

I have an HP laptop running Windows Vista 32-bit Home Premium.
It is connected wirelessly to the Internet via a Motorola SBG6580 cable Gateway.
I have an HP C6280 All-In-One printer/copier/scanner: wireless is not built-in.
A Linksys WPSM54G Printerserver is connected (hardwired) to the printer.
Currently, the printer is connected to the laptop via USB cable, and I am able to print.
(Previously, my wireless network connectivity was via a Linksys WRT54G router,
along with a modem. These were replaced with the Gateway.)
How do I setup wireless connectivity between the Printserver and the Gateway ?
I am not very network savvy (yet) , so I am not familiar with wireless connectivity details.
Any ideas ???

From what I can tell you need help connecting the Linksys printer server to your network. Linksys has good instructions for the configuring the printserver. I've linked that site.
After the printer server is on line you might need to change the printer driver setings to reflect the new settings. A driver software reinstall should do that.

OK, you have two choices to connect your printer to your PC:
1. USB cable - this is the simplest, however, you will have to plug in the USB to be able to print.
2. "Ad hoc" wireless. This is a wireless link between your printer and your PC.
Let me know which one you want to use. In the mean time get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page.

How can I connect to a NAS via internet

I've been searching the forum for an answer and have found close but not quite. I'm running a Macbook on Snow leopard as is a friend that I am now working with. She (or rather, her husband) also has a NAS connected via a wireless router on a home network. We would like to load the files that we are both working from on the NAS so we are working from one set of master files. We both move around alot (btween Fance & Italy). Now, I can access the NAS easily from her computer on their network - the Mac picked it up automatically but now that I'm home, I can't seem to find it on my computer. I've tried putting the IP address of the NAS into Safari - error message, server not responding. I've also tried to connect to server via afp - same thing
My question is: how can we access the NAS via the internet? Does her husband have to specifically creat an account on the thing for me? I'm at a loss here as I have no experience of NAS devices.

The problem here is that you do not have direct access to items on their LAN. What you need to do is set up port forwarding on their router so that requests on whatever port the NAS uses are forwarded to the NAS from the router. The other way (probably more secure) to do it would be to set up virtual private networking (VPN) so that you can connect to their entire LAN as if you were part of it while actually on the Internet. The router would have to support this of course.

Hello,
I'm trying to access the contacts data that my phone stores in iCloud contacts on my PC.
Since I'm using Thunderbird as my PIM, I need the carddav URL to access it via the Sogo Connector.
It works perfectly for the calendars in Lightning.
I just want to clarify, that I'm using the right address of the principal URL to access the Carddav data (since I don't own a Mac, I can't just look it up in the local plist files).
If my main calendar is

, what is the URL for the contacts?

Should there be sth past the unique ID? Am I using the right unique ID or is it different between contacts and calendar data?
Perhaps someone has a similar problem.

Hello Stapler, I know how you feel I got frustrated with very same issue months and left it in the too hard basket. worked it out today with the help of your posts.
Make sure printer is turned ON first and WiFi is lit up on front face.
GOTO print fax button in System preferences.
in print screen you will see a printer list on Left hand side of printers you already use including status of each.
AT The BOTTOM LEFT of this square you will see a   + -   button
Press the + button
This will open another window labled ADD Printer, with Default, fax, IP and Windows across the top.
In the Default page you will see another list of printer choice options, ( printers available to you )
press - select - the canon MG 5250 series_46698D000000     (your numbers may be different) and you will also see under the Kind heading on Right hand side it will say "canonijnetwork"   ( This is what gave it away to me )
Then press ADD
Then go to document and press print, Command P
and in Printer selection, press up down arrow and your new priner should be in there.
selct it and Press Print, then Wollah, your document should be printing and it should show up in the print queue.
       So the secret is that you will actually have TWO MG5250 printers in your printer option list. A ISB version and a WiFi version with long number beside it.

Printing to a printer connected to an iMac via network from Vista PC

I have a Canon PIXMA MP610 connected to a new iMac (Leopard) via USB it works fine on the iMac. I shared the device on the iMac as instructed in the Apple help section. On my network, I have 2 Dell laptops running Vista Ultimate. I installed the lasted drivers on the Dells and was able to find the shared printer on the network and successfully add it to both Dell PCs. The pc's can see status (i.e. ready, idle, etc..) and even ink and paper status. When I try to print to the printer, the document spools in the queue, but then just disappears and nothing comes out of the printer.

I just learned that Mac's printer is shown to network as a *PostScript printer* regardless of its type. The guide http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3012.html (for Windows XP) tells how you have to define your printer's name. But you must select a driver for a Apple printer (b/w of color matching yours), don't use the printer's native driver (unless it is a PS printer).
There is no Apple drivers available in my Vista Premium. But fortunately PostScript is well standardized and you can select from any of PS-drivers. i took +HP Color LaserJet 4700 PS+ and now my +Epson Stylus Photo 870+ works fine!

How can i connect tc to my secure network?

for over a year now, i have had my tc connected just fine however today i found out that my roommate put a password on the network without telling me. now my tc won't connect and this is where i store my music and videos and printer not to mention all of my backups and large documents. i scanned with airport and it said that nothing was in range. how can i force airport to recognize my tc so that i can use the password to connect to my tc and have the ability to print and use it like i used to?

Your only option at this point is to reset the TC back to factory default settings and reconfigure the device. To do this,
Power down the TC for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button and while you continue to hold in the reset button, plug the power back in to the TC.
Release the reset button after 10 seconds
You almost need 3 hands to do this. It will help if you position the TC vertically on your desk with the rear facing upward.
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC to your computer. Restart the computer and open AirPort Utility to reconfigure the device. You can use the Manual Setup option if you are familiar with the settings. Otherwise, click Continue to follow the guided setup.

What are you trying to do the password on .. I have never noticed that it is limited to specific lengths unless you use WEP.. surely you don't use wep.
