How to I get TC to backup to my NAS (I am running NAS4free)?

I have recently set up a NAS running on NAS4free v9.0.1 of Oct 2012 with the intention of using it as a backup facility for my MacPro. When I try to get TC to see it, I get a box curiously asking me about Airport when I switch on the TC. I must be doing something wrong but don't know what. The NAS is connected to my router via an Ethernet and the MacPro sees the NAS area fine.
Many thanks for your help in advance.

You cannot automatically do any sort of backup from the TC to the network drive.. you will need to copy and paste the files via the computer or you will need to use a backup utility that can read network drives.. ironically TM cannot.
So when you say you are trying to get TC to see it.. it is impossible.
There is one alternative.. apple did provide an archive faciity in the airport utility 5.6 which is removed from v6.
It is pathetic as it is a full disk backup to USB drive only plugged directly into the TC.. every backup is a full disk, no incremental.. and it is slow .. like slow as in days and days slow.. during which time the TC cannot be used for backups.. I guess apple recognised that it was so pathetic even they removed it.. but didn't give us rsync or other useful utility in its place.. just nothing.
Good luck with it.

    How did you use this backup drive? Was this a Time Machine backup, or just an external drive to which you copied files?
    I assume your photos were in iPhoto.  If you're just talking a bunch of JPEG files you can just drag them wherever you like, otherwise:

    Not sure where you backup to.
    ITunes keeps the latest backup only.
    Icloud keeps the 3 last backup.

    Follow the instructions included with this link for transferring your iTunes library from your PC to your Mac. This along with authorizing your Mac with your iTunes account with iTunes and no iTunes content in on your iPhone will be erased with the first sync with iTunes on your Mac.
    This is based on all iTunes content on your iPhone is in your iTunes library on your PC where all iTunes content on your iPhone should be - all music, movies, tv shows, etc., and 3rd party apps.

    It will be backed up on your computer and can later be restored to an iOS device using iTunes, if desired.  Of course, if your hard drive crashes you'll lose it if it isn't backed up somewhere else.  If you want to included it in your computer backup, it will be located at one of the following locations:
    Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
    Windows XP: %AppData%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
    Windows Vista: %AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
    Windows 7: %AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

  • How to move existent Time Machine backups to a NAS?

    Hello everybody
      I am not sure if I am posting this discussion in the correct community, so please move it to the right one in case you need.
      Currently I am using a 1TB external hard drive to store all my time machine backups. This drive also contains other information (movies, photos etc). I bought a Western Digital MyBook World Edition II which is a NAS. I want it to move my Time Machine backups to my NAS. How can I do it? Just copy over the backups folder from the external hard drive to the NAS?
    Thank you!
    Gilson

    That's just crazy slow.
    It won't be fast, as the data can't go directly from the old disk to the new one.  It must pass through your Mac, so is on the network twice, slowing the effective speed by roughly half.  But that's awful.
    There could be any number of causes, from bad ports or cables to problems with either drive or controller.  I don't have any experience with modern RAID systems, but some of the older ones were extremely slow when there was a problem with one of the drives.
    And it may get worse -- if the backups are damaged, the copy will fail and the result won't be useable.
    About all I can recommend is the usual:  it's always prudent to keep secondary backups. If you don't have any, I'd strongly recommend getting a (plain) external HD and making a "bootable clone" on it ASAP (that will probably slow the copy down somewhat).  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for details and some suggestions.
    It wouldn't have to be a 2 TB drive, just the same size as your internal HD (or at least 10% larger than the data on it).  You might consider getting a portable drive, so you can take it to a secure off-site location once you get your TM backups working to the new WD box.  Then update it periodically.

  • How can I get the variable with the value from Thread's run method

    We want to access a variable from the run method of a Thread externally in a class or in a method. Even though I make the variable as public /public static, I could get the value till the end of the run method only. After that scope of the variable gets lost resulting to null value in the called method/class..
    How can I get the variable with the value?
    This is sample code:
    public class SampleSynchronisation
         public static void main(String df[])
    sampleThread sathr= new sampleThread();
    sathr.start();
    System.out.println("This is the value from the run method "+sathr.x);
    /* I should get:
    Inside the run method
    But I get only:
    Inside*/
    class sampleThread extends Thread
         public String x="Inside";
         public void run()
              x+="the run method";
    NB: if i write the variable in to a file I am able to read it from external method. This I dont want to do

    Your main thread continues to run after the sathr thread is completed, consequently the output is done before the sathr thread has modified the string. You need to make the main thread pause, this will allow sathr time to run to the point where it will modify the string and then you can print it out. Another way would be to lock the object using a synchronized block to stop the main thread accessing the string until the sathr has finished with it.

  • How do I get to my backup on icloud after i deleted the account from my iphone?

    So I couldn't log into my icloud account. It told me the password was incorrect even though I knew it wasn't. So I deleted the account and started a new one. That is when i realized my contacts has been erased. I did a back up with the old icloud account and read somewhere that I can log into that account on the computer even though I deleted the account from the phone. Unfortunately, It still says the password is incorrect and to reset the password, I need to access that email address. Does anyone know how to get my contacts back. I also heard that some people, after updating their iOS to the newest version lost their contacts so it may have been that. Either way I do not want to manually add over 200 contacts back to my phone so someone pleeeeeaaaaaasssssseeeeee help!!!!

    Make sure there is a backup from yesterday.
    First, make sure you have WiFi access.
    Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup
    As long as iCloud backup is toggled "On'" you should see the date/time of the most recent backup.
    If all is good, got to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings.
    You'll be able to begin configuring the device the same way that you did on day one.  At approximately the fourth step, make sure to select "Restore from iCloud Backup."

  • How do I get a complete backup of my iPhone?

    I am sure that somewhere this is answered completely...i just havent found it yet.
    I plugged my phone into iTunes, did a sync and backup, then restored my phone to original state, then tried to install everything from a backup.
    All of my apps are missing.
    Did I do something wrong?
    I need clear instructions...an explanation of the difference between a sync and a backup, and how do I completely wipe a device then reinstall exactly what i had.

  • How to I get Time Machine backups OFF my external hard drive?!?!?

    I'm not asking how I restore a backup.
    I plugged in my 250GB external to try out TM. Before TM did it's first backup I have 160GB free. After TM did its backup I have 1GB free. I no longer want to use TM and have told it to "Stop Backing Up" in Sys Prefs. The problem is that I still only have 1GB of space left. When I view the external in the finder I only see my 90GB of drag and drop backups, but it says the disk only has 1GB of free space. Are the Time Machine backups invisible? How do I reclaim my space back?
    Thanks!

    Looking at info, I found the folder was owned by root. Even with my admin privileges, I couldn't delete. I then found that root wasn't activated on that machine, so I had to do more dancing around.
    In cases like this, you should be able to delete it from the command line by using sudo: sudo rm -rf directory (be careful with this command)
    After deleting the TM backup folder, the drive still indicated that the former lost space was still lost. I eventually reformatted.
    How did you delete it? Could it be that the folder was still in the Trash of the external disk?
