How to I hide my top sites

Hi, whenever I open a new tab it shows a list of my "top sites" which can be anything really, even if i just searched them once before, they stay there. How can i hide or delete these?

You can possibly pin other web pages (e.g. about:blank) to the top sites to make only those appear and not pages you visited in the past:

  • How can i disable the top sites on my safari browser?

How can I remove the Top Sites features when I open safari so that the whole page defaults to Google?

That doesn't really disable "top sites," it just hides the page from regular view. One can still select "show top sites" in the History menu. I would like it turned off. I don't want this feature to be accessible at all. There should be a setting that turns it off entirely.
I don't begrudge other people's preferences if they like it, but there should be the ability to simply deactivate the feature. I don't find it useful, I find it creepy, like the browser is stalking me. I know it just uses data from my history, but I don't care. It feels like my browser is stalking me and invading my privacy. Since it's my browser, I want to tell it to knock it off, once and for all.

  • How can I update the 'Top Sites' display on Safari on my MacBook Pro?

Ok, so, up until fairly recently (around 2 weeks) when I opened Safari my topsites would be displayed as nine 'thumbnails'. And they used to show the current site, so if I had CNN, it would show the top stories of the day, yet now it has stopped and hasn't updated for weeks, so is showing old news, until I click it. Also, for NBA.com, it shows an old picture, until I click and open the site. I know this is a very trivial thing, yet it's annoying. So basically, how can I add a new tab and see the Top Sites' thumbnails updated? Thanks in advance.

    Hi.
now it has stopped and hasn't updated for weeks,
The TopSites.plist file may be corrupted. There's an easy fix.
    Quit Safari.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    ~/Library/Safari
    Click Go
Move the TopSites.plist file from the Safari folder to the Trash.
Relaunch Safari. See if that made a difference.

  • How do I edit my Top Sites Page on Mavericks?

I am trying to figure out how do I edit the top sites page. Before you were able to click an edit button that allowed you to delete and pin the pages but now I can't figure it out. More specifically I want to know who to delete certain pages.

I know this is old, but I just figured I would shed some light on solving the issue I think you are actually speaking of. When I upgraded, I immediately noticed I could not click "edit" in the bottom corner to change the amount of top sites, which slightly irritated me. I tried everything, and eventually thought they had done away with the feature altogether, but then I saw if you click safari (from here, that Bold Safari word in the top left corner of the screen) and choose 'preferences' it will take you to a tab that allows you to modify the number of top sites, allowing me to go back down to 6. Easier to read, easier to make sense of. (A lot of websites cannot be made out when they are '16 top site' size. So this was something I wanted to fix, with my 11" screen.) Hope this helps!

how do i create a top site after inadvertently deleting one

I'll bet I'm older than you and being a lady isn't relevant! But I'm glad to try to help.
My version of Safari is 8.0.2 and the Top Sites icon I was referring to is shown with the red arrow pointing to it in the picture below:
If you have an older version of Safari and the Top Sites icon isn't there, I believe you can do the following:
    1. Open a web page to the site you want to add.
    2. Open a second tab to Top Sites
    3. Go back to the first tab, click and highlight the URL (address) and drag it to the Top Sites tab (just to the words Top Sites that are exposed near the top when the first tab page is covering the rest of the Top Sites tab.
If that doesn't work, reply with the version of Safari you have -- click the menu named Safari and then About Safari to get the version.
    Hope this helps.

How do I get top sites onto my ipad 1?

If you've seen it on other iPads - you didn't see it in Safari.
iCabMobile has a top sites feature and maybe that's where you saw it but Safari never had it on the iPad.

  • How come some of my "top sites" in safari won't show the pages?

I had to restore my system and now some of the TOP SITES in safari wont show the pages and only show the black page.  If I click on the black page, it loads the page, but it stays black in top sites.  Any help would be nice thanks

It is probably just an artifact of restoring. Once you type their names into the url bar again, the sites and their last images will show up again in Top Sites.
I use an obscure method that clears all caches on every logout, and my top sites always comes up all black when I log in. It is not really a defect, it just does not have an old page-image to show you until you visit that site again.

  • Just downloaded 5.0 version of Firefox..when I click on my TOP SITE Icon my screen comes up "blank and black" how do I get my top sites back?

You can click on the TOP SITE ICON but none of the sites show up...only a black screen

I have the shortcuts on my browser to the sites that I go to frequently. It's when I press those buttons (which have always worked before and I checked their URLs) it takes me to the Yahoo Page not Found page. But then when I click the shortcut button again, it usually works.
