my question is;is it possible to identify windows viruses on usb stick when I open it on mac?I know that is no problem for mac but for my pc maybe.

Mac antivirus programs primarily contain definitions for Windows viruses. The main reason for their existence is to remove viruses used when sharing programs between Mac and Windows machines. It's not so much that Macs are vulnerable, but that a lot of people create output on Macs that are eventually used by Windows users. It's generally not good publicity releasing a file that has a virus attached that could infect customers' equipment.
You could probably get a shareware (I forgot which one comes most recommended) or commercial antivirus program for OSX. You'd want to run a scan of the USB drive and have it auto-remove.

How do windows viruses install on a mac?

I have read online that generally mac users dont need to worry about viruses for the mac, but we do need to be aware of window viruses and passing those on to windows users.
How exactly would that occur though? As far as I know Macs have completely different file extensions and I don't see how a windows virus would be able to recognize where it is and then execute itself to go off to another computer unless I actually sent it as an attachement in IM or email someway.
Anyone care to enlighten me on how the virus is passed between systems?

A virus is simply code, and while it cannot run on your Mac, the embedded code can be transferred to any computer.
It is not a matter of your Mac sending the virus along as it would not do so automatically. If I am using Windows and send you a file containing a virus, you would be able to receive it without being affected by it. If you in turn forwarded that same file to a Windows user, it would then be able to be run and do its damage.
Think of a Mac like a a "carrier" of an illness. Same concept.

I am using Mac Os X 10.6, on a 2010 macbook pro 17" with latest updates as of 09 05 2011
I am using memory intensive applications for scientific purposes, and I am quite unhappy with one kernel extension that consumes more than 600 mb of real memory.
It is most probably a driver,
but I do not know how to identify which driver it is, and how to remove it.
does Mac Os provide anything like modprobe modtools etc? Or even anything that resembles windows device driver managment in XP is welcome.

Sorry, the activity monitor and top are bit too vague for the problem at hand.
This kernel_task, is a container for all the kernel extensions, right?
It is strange, the amount of memory reported by kextstat does not match with this value,
only if all 147 of them was using 4 mb of memory (as I've told, those are the only 2 6 digit numbers, most of them
are 4 digit numbers, so it is impossible) I would have a figure close to it.
So do you mean there is something I can not see that consumes this memory?

How to install Windows on MAC? (Can't see the check box "Install or remove Windows 7 or later version" on Boot Camp Assistant)

I want to install Windows 7 on my MBP mid 2012 but in Boot Camp does not appear the check box: "Install or remove Windows 7 or later version". I continued with making the USB bootable with Windows 7 but then when I restart and boot with the USB I still can't install Windows because then I receive an error: ""Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of GPT partition style."
From OS with Boot Camp I didn't manage to make a partition for Windows instead I made one with Disk Utility (formated FAT).
After booting from USB that partition was also formated into NTFS necessary for Windows. Still the same error.
Any idea how to install Windows on my MAC?

If you are refering to this I tried to update the EFI version (I see only SMC version 2.9 as a diferrence of what I have) but on installing I received an error: "This software is not supported on your system."

Old external drive; how to check for virus?

I`ve an old external drive from the time I was a Windows PC user. I just don`t want a virus on my macbook, so I want to make sure that the drive is clean, and wipe out all the deadly ****. So, what do I do? PS, I have really important stuff in there too, so I cant just reformat the drive.

How to reinstall Windows 8 on Yoga 13 with damaged Recovery Image?

I changed the partitions on my Yoga 13. Now it is not possible to refresh, reinstall or perform an advance start-up, as it looks like there is no recovery image anymore. The systems is currently very messy and needs a reinstall.

In the event that the Recovery partition is not working the only option is to use the Recovery CD that you can create when you first got the computer.
but if you were not able to create a Recovery CD and the Onekey Recovery is not working.

A300 when i input windows xp disc and boot from cd/dvd .... there is an error tell me that : you have viruses on your hard disc or scan it from viruses , or something like that but i test the same OS disc into other pc and its working also i have Gdata IS 2012, and i think its restriction from toshiba or i dont know , but its very important to install windows xp ...

It is not easy to understand the whole situation, especially this part with viruses.
In my opinion WXP installation should not be problematic.
What you need is WXP SP2 or SP3 disc and SATA driver. Without SATA driver HDD will not be visible for WXP.

When Internet Explorer is installed on solaris as a default browser, it does not change
the user-prefs.dt file. But still when a HTML document is double clicked from the file manager of solaris CDE, it opens the HTML page in Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer copies a file called IE.dt in /etc/dt/appconfig/types/C. Just by copying a file how does the CDE file manager is able to open any html file in Internet Explorer??
Further the installation path of the Internet Explorer is not fixed as that of netscape. Our application need to display the HTML help in user's default browser.
On Windows-NT this can be implemented just by passing the html file as an argument to a win32 API ShellExecute(FindExecutable can also be used.
How this can be achieved on solaris??

Urgt:How to identify TOP 5 SQL using more CPU time without using statspack

How to identify the TOP 5 SQL queries which are consuming more CPU time during the timespan of 24 hours for entire database. There are N number of users who have issued sql queries, out of which few users have disconnected and few user are still connected to the database(I need to consider all sessions). My database version is 9.0.1. I don't want to use statspack. Is there any way to identify TOP 5 SQL consuming more CPU time without affecting the performance of the database. Can any one help me on this? Its urgent!!. I don't want to use statspack becasue it degrades the performance and i cannot afford to run it for 24 hours.

You don't run statspack for 24 hours, that would infact be pointless...
Run statspack for say a 10 or 15 minute window during a particular "busy" period on your database. If you run it for longer then all the useful data will have been "averaged out". You want a snapshot in time, not an average over the day.

In 11gR2 RAC, How to identify which ASM Diskgroup is attached to which Disks...( OS is RHEL 5.4).
We could list ASM Diskgroups by,
*#oracleasm listdisks* but this command doesn't show the disks assigned to ASM DiskGroup.
Even for checking location of OCR and Voting Disks only show Diskgroup name and not the actual disks.
$ocrcheck
$crsctl query css votedisk
( like in 10gR2 RAC, We do entry in /etc/rules.d/udev/60-raw-rules file for raw mapping of OCR, Voting Disk and Other ASM Diskgroup)
Plz help me, As one of the client place, I could see so many LUNs assigned to the Server and not getting exact idea which Disks have been used for OCR, Voting Disk and DATA Diskgroup.

Well for this you can use oracleasm querydisk.Using this you can identify which device as marked for asm or not. for example you can see this below example.

You could check the product serial number against the online identification sites, that of course
could be faked. Also, if the computer has an OS X and is able to tell you in System Profiler or
other listing of internal hardware, a regular PC hardware would appear a bit different than Mac.
With the questionable product in your possession or close proximity for inspection, you may
find more information. If you can start it & read the information inside, much more is learned.

Hopefully this helps somewhat. Also an indicator may be price. If a new Apple computer or
an iDevice relies on the original owner's Apple ID and their information, it may not be worth
owning unless they transfer it. If the unit has a tie-in to an AppleID and they haven't set it
up for a new user, you may have to take the unit to an Apple Authorized service provider to
have them help set up a new owner (appleID) if you don't know how. -- And take along the
original owner whose ID set up the Mac in the first place, so they can transfer ownership.
A fake product should not need an AppleID or it may have an illegal clone on board. A fake
would probably either be a hack- in tosh or a windows pc that looks like MacBook Air. Or a
copy made by some contractor to look like a Mac. You could look into the Apple site and
check to see how to inquire deeper, in Apple Legal site. Or how to report a fake.

How will running windows XP affect my Mac?

I am very new to Mac's. When I bought it two weeks ago I learned about bootcamp and how you could run both Windows and OSX, I thought this would be great because I would like to be able to play a favorite game of mine on here. However, when using Windows I have had nothing but viruses. If I used bootcamp to run Windows XP, would I be just as likely to get viruses and crap on my Mac as I would be on any other computer? And if I did get a virus or something, would it be contained to the XP part of the hard drive, or would my whole computer get hit?

running Windows on a Mac is like running Windows on any other computer.
So, after what you have experienced would you run Windows without an Anti-Virus software ?
While the Mac and Mac OSX are immune to Windows viruses due to the different nature of the operating system, it can nonetheless be the source of Windows viruses infiltrating your Windows partition on your Mac, when you use an infected USB pendrive (or a CD/DVD or the internet).
